Saddling Up Chris Paoli Steamboat’s ranching heritage is alive and well. Although it’s much different than it was 50 years ago, ranching is an important part of our community and it’s attractive to long time locals and visitors, too. In this issue, we look at the many ways Steamboat’s ranching community has evolved into a broad and diverse array of agricultural activities and equestrian lifestyles. After moving from New York to Steamboat, one of my family’s first experiences with Yampa Valley ranching was a visit to Windemere Ranch. My new friend at the time invited us out to see his horses. For me, horses were always something on the other side of a fence or in a truck on the road. As we walked into the field with a bucket of cookies, the horses knew just what to do: they all ran in our direction. While they were beautiful, graceful, and western, I was nervous! It was concerning to see 1,500 pounds of large animal running in my direction. As Jenn and I enter our 15th year as Steamboat residents, we’re proud and pleased to see how the town and valley have flourished. From the Yampa Street improvements and innovative restaurant scene to the deliberately amazing trail system on Emerald Mountain, everything is better than it was when we moved here. It’s fun to show guests around and show off the place we call home—the place we want to be.
“Thank you for reading our magazine. Our purpose is to inspire affection for the amazing town we call home and the spectacular properties we represent as sellers’ agents.” Chris Paoli, Broker Owner, Colorado Group Realty, Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Recent major changes include Aspen Skiing Co. and KSL Partners buying Intrawest Resorts as well as the City of Steamboat Springs completing a major capital improvement project in the downtown area. As you’ll read in the pages ahead, Steamboat is proud of its western heritage and rural identity but not afraid of some modern day transformation. With conversation, confidence, discretion, and courage, Steamboat residents and leaders have launched projects originally conceived many years ago. The evolution we’re experiencing has been a long time coming. And yet, Steamboat is still Steamboat. The people who ranch here know it, the people who farm here know it, and the people who live and work here know it. It’s a place where people come to try something new and find something better. Making big moves and changes can bring out fear. But after the fear subsides, you realize you’re home.

Whispering Willows Ranch
Breeding and Training Nationally Recognized Horses
Jason Patrick’s father was a banker from Oklahoma who dreamed of being a rancher. In 1981, he took all of his money and bought two ranches, one in Steamboat and the other in Yampa. As a kid, Jason worked on the ranches because he loved the lifestyle. In the summertime, he was on a horse all day. He grew up running the hills of the Yampa Valley and has a passion for horses that’s never subsided. In 2004, Jason welcomed the opportunity to train horses at Whispering Willows Ranch. Initially, he trained anything and everything— good horses, rescue horses, and problem horses. While Jason still works with rescue horses because he believes in the mission, he modified the ranch’s model to raise and train horses to compete nationally. He was selective as he put together a band of winning broodmares and then added one of the best young stallions in the country, This One Time. While This One Time has earned $150,000 in prize money on the national scene, it’s the mare that dictates the quality of breeding. “Athleticism and disposition come from the stallion,” Jason explains. “But what makes a horse exceptionally valuable is the combination of a good stallion and a good mare.” Whispering Willows’ horses are unique in that they make a living as ranch horses during the week and compete all over the country on weekends. “We use the work of the ranch to train the horses,” Jason says. “We still do the ranch work, I just swap horses out every 45 minutes.” Jason considers horses to be incomparably adaptable and forgiving as well as pretty good reflections of who we are and how we act. It’s this understanding of horses plus a devotion to Western heritage that produces the quality of horses they envisioned over a decade ago.
This One Time is the total package.
As Steamboat has evolved into a contemporary mountain oasis with seemingly unlimited competitive and recreational activities, it’s easy to overlook Steamboat’s Western heritage. “Just because Steamboat prioritizes other activities doesn’t mean ranching’s not here,” Jason reminds us. “There are generations of ranchers still producing.” As all businesses must evolve and thrive or stagnate and fail, the same is true with ranching. “Horses have taken us into a different realm,” Jason acknowledges. “Our goal is to produce premier products, but we stay true to our passion. This lifestyle—how we interact with horses—helps us find our way.” Most of Whispering Willows’ horses are reined cow horses. In an arena, the horses work a single cow performing maneuvers such as reining, cutting, and fencing. They’re judged on accuracy, timing, and responsiveness and can really display their agility. “We’re raising extreme athletes, not just trail horses. They’re at the top end of what a horse can do.” With priorities on physical ability, temperament, and trainability, Whispering Willows Ranch raises the best animals they can. “We raise and show cow horses to compete successfully. More importantly, because the horses are so special, they’re loved, appreciated, and well cared for when they find their way into their new homes.”

Judy Odom
From the Boardroom to the Backcountry Judy Odom is a native Texan who has owned property in Steamboat for close to 30 years. She spent her early professional life as a CPA with large accounting firms before co-founding a personal software company and shaping it into a successful global supplier and Fortune 1000 company. Now in her “retirement,” she serves on several public company boards and volunteers for the board of Seminars at Steamboat. Surrounded by high-pressure corporate environments over the decades, Judy’s vacation time was precious. Feeling her stress dissipate in the high country, she traveled to various mountain towns but never committed to one in particular. However, following her first visit to Steamboat for a Christmas vacation, she returned in January to buy her first high country hideaway. “It was instant,” Judy remembers. “Right away, I loved this town for its easy down-to-earth people and the farming and ranching influence that’s been in the valley. It is a real place with a strong sense of community.” After ten years, Judy decided to sell her condo, buy some land, and build a home. She was lured by the reverence of being outside. “I’ve always loved the backcountry,” Judy explains. “It’s the tranquility of being out there whether cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, or just sitting quietly and feeling the closeness of God and the spirituality of nature.” Returning from a full day’s hike on the Gilpin Gold Creek Lake Loop in the Zirkel Wilderness, Judy’s vision for her future broadened. Back at the trailhead, she saw an older couple just finishing the loop on horseback. It was Judy’s aha moment. She didn’t ride horses yet, but she could anticipate a time in the future when strenuous hikes would become difficult. On horseback, she’d still be able to roam the backcountry. Judy began by leasing a horse and taking riding lessons with Jason Patrick from Whispering Willows Ranch. “I shadowed Jason,” Judy says. “He was a terrific and patient coach. He taught me all of the horsemanship I know.” Judy bought her horse, Moon, from Jason and trailered her back and forth from Colorado to Texas. When she met Annick Chappot-Look with First Class Equine Transport, she relinquished the responsibility. “Annick takes such great care of the horses and has a terrific horse hotel on wheels (a.k.a. trailer),” Judy confirms. “I haven’t used anyone else since I hired her the first time.”

Judy and her dogs on a walk through the woods
Most of Judy’s riding in the Yampa Valley is trail riding. She and her girlfriends travel to the Zirkels and Flattops for local excursions. Last fall, they drove to Fort Robinson State Park in Nebraska to explore new trails and this fall they’ll go to Wyoming to discover more. “You meet your kindred spirits,” Judy shares, “and you just start riding together.” It was, in fact, through the horse world that Judy met her husband, Ron Vermillion—he happened to bike by as Judy and Janet Lydick, a mutual friend, were saddling up for a ride. “Ron called me that day. We met the next day and got married four years later.” While Steamboat’s beauty, sense of ease, outdoor activities, and ranching culture appeal to Judy, she’s also engaged by its diversity. When she’s not outside playing, she goes to Strings Music Festival and Steamboat Free Summer Concerts, attends Seminars at Steamboat to hear world-renowned speakers address current public policy topics, and enjoys book club and lunches with friends. She knows Steamboat’s active, athletic lifestyle contributes to her overall health and vitality, and she feels fortunate to participate. But she also credits the openmindedness around her for helping to create common ground and a sense of community. Judy didn’t grow up camping or spending time in the mountains, but once she got to Steamboat, she just took it all in.
“It was instant,” Judy remembers. “Right away, I loved this town for its easy down-to-earth people and the farming and ranching influence that’s been in the valley. It is a real place with a strong sense of community.”

Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp Cattle Call
In 1914, Charlotte Perry and Portia Mansfield came to Steamboat with a mule named Tango. Together, Perry and Mansfield’s vision was to explore authentic artistic expression and teach dance in a rustic mountain setting. Perry-Mansfield is now the oldest continuously operating performing arts camp in the country. Every summer, it attracts 250 students ages eight to 21 and showcases 20 performances. With the nation’s best faculty, Perry-Mansfield is known for innovation, imagination, experimentation, and risk taking in theatre, dance, musical theatre, and creative writing. Perry-Mansfield is philosophically progressive and revered as a preeminent artistic innovator. Programs for kids, teens, and college students nurture a love of the arts by bringing them both into nature and closer to their artistic and personal dreams than they’ve ever been before. The nonprofit Friends of Perry-Mansfield’s mission is to provide superior arts training in body, heart, and mind and to promote creativity, a sense of the close brotherhood of the arts, and the values of a way of life close to nature. Summer camps include a College Dance Intensive, Pre-Professional Intensive (Dance or Theatre), Young Artist Intensive (Dance or Theatre), Emerging Artist Camp, Discovery Day Camp, and Equestrian Day Camp. With an eight to one student teacher ratio, students receive unparalleled personal attention and reach extraordinary levels of achievement. Perry-Mansfield attracts dedicated young dancers and actors who harbor the real intent to pursue performing arts into college and beyond. The programs’ structure offers a rigorous schedule of daily classes, evening rehearsals, and performances that prepare students for the demands of the professional world. One of Perry-Mansfield’s most unique summer programs is the New Works Festival. Founded in 1997, the New Works Festival allows up-and-coming and seasoned playwrights the opportunity to cultivate their work with the support of a participating theater company. Playwrights spend a week working with professional actors to develop their pieces, and the festival culminates with professionally staged readings. The New Works Festival enjoys an unprecedented track record of future success for its featured productions: within five years, 80% become fully mounted productions. Perry-Mansfield’s 76-acre campus is located just outside Steamboat Springs in the hills of Strawberry Park. With its long established log cabins and legacy of excellence, the entire campus is a National Historic District. Perry-Mansfield is credited with the foundations of modern dance, cabaret, and musical theatre. Celebrities who attended Perry-Mansfield in their youth include Dustin Hoffman, Julie Harris, La La Land choreographer Mandy Moore, Corey Hawkins, and Jessica Biel. Pre-eminent theatre faculty have included Stephen Schwartz, Jeanine Tesori, Barney Brown, Gary Kline, Ted Swetz, and Joe Price. Among recent prominent dance faculty are Robert Battle, Antonio Brown, Erica Pujic, Stacey Tookey, Tammy Dyke-Compton, Lynda Davis, and Banning Bouldin. Though it’s renowned for its distinguished performing arts, Perry-Mansfield’s connection to the Rocky Mountain landscape and Western heritage plays an integral part in its acclaim. Equestrian summer camps teach traditional English riding and jumping, horsemanship, and horse care skills. Those who come to ride horses benefit as much as the aspiring artists with a calculated roadmap to success. In addition to a relentless pursuit of excellence and esteemed faculty, an inherent component to students’ success is the setting—infused with Paint and Quarter Horses, grassy meadows and alpine ponds, bunk beds and bonfires.

Elkstone Farm Strawberry Fields Forever Terry Huffington has moved on from working as a geologist in the oil and gas industry, but she’s still actively engaged with the land. Operating domestically and internationally until 1997, Terry always thought her generation of environmentally oriented geologists would do things differently—develop an energy plan and transition to a cleaner economy. Opportunistic in her retirement, it turns out Terry’s premonition was personal. When her mother passed away in 2003, Terry experienced the acute realization that our time here on earth is limited. The notion of being transient naturally permeated to her perception of the land. It’s here long before and after us. We don’t own land; we are its stewards. Having traveled to Steamboat many times in the early 1980s, Terry knew she eventually wanted to buy a home here. Enticed by the agricultural heritage of Strawberry Park, she and her husband Ralph Dittman purchased 309 acres in 1993. Strawberry Park was once prolific enough in its strawberry yield to ensure that local farmers made a profit. Compelled by this history, Terry was inspired to do something relevant with the land. “I wanted it to be in better condition when we left it,” she says, “than it was when we bought it.” Elkstone Farm is a philosophically driven business. While Terry and Ralph were originally intent on growing strawberries, they learned about permaculture and their vision morphed. They ultimately acquired a total of 690 acres, though the farm itself is much smaller. With diverse vegetation and geomorphic features, the farm includes a pond garden, flower garden, greenhouse, hoop houses, fruit forest, and agroforest. Along with traditional salad greens and tomatoes, Elkstone produces Mediterranean perennials, an assortment of herbs and fruits, and vibrant bouquets of flowers. The farm’s transformation is rooted in permaculture’s notion of working with rather than against nature.

“Permaculture is more a design concept than a science,” Terry explains. “Plants don’t naturally grow in rows. They grow in plant communities and each plant has a role: to break up the soil; provide shade, nutrients, or food for humans and wildlife; or attract pollinators or other beneficial insects, for example.” The focus of permaculture is on the patterns of landscape and combination of elements. The land, plants, and climate work symbiotically for maximum production and health of every resource. Permaculture prioritizes caring for the earth and people, and in doing so, taking and using only what’s necessary before reinvesting the rest. Elkstone Farm is green, growing, and thriving. It’s loved and embraced by Steamboat locals—for its commitment to honoring the soil, producing nutrient dense food, and expanding organically. “I want to protect the land from development,” Terry says. “There are so many creative ways to use land. Our focus has been on growing food the best we can. We’ve made huge strides, but there’s a lot left to be done.” Planting in the ag forest
Elkstone Farm grows produce year round and runs two seasonal farm stands. The summer farm stand is located near Butcherknife Creek in a beautiful red-roofed barn. In the winter, the stand moves across the hay meadow to the farm Seedhouse. During the winter, check out the online store to see what’s available, place your order, and then come out to the farm to pay for and pick up your purchases. Produce and products are also available much of the year at CAAMarket.org.
Having also earned an MBA, Terry admits with a smile: “when we started the farm, we didn’t have a business plan. There were three of us, and we just dug in.” Her accomplishments with Elkstone Farm were born from her love of the land, knowledge of its past, and hope for its future. Nostalgia for old strawberry plants got her started, and maybe she was guided by a latent, divergent vision. As Elkstone feeds more local families and restaurants, Terry can move forward purposefully, crafting a sustainable blueprint that strategically builds upon the farm’s ecological concepts and core values.

Yoga in Steamboat Flowing In and Out Twenty years ago, there weren’t many yoga classes offered in Steamboat. A handful of dedicated practitioners— Steamboat’s yoga pioneers—were considered to be knowledgeable but alternative. As yoga became a national trend, new teachers trickled into town. Classes were filling up, instructors were overscheduled, and there was a decisive demand for more. Yoga has been well received in Steamboat and its popularity represents a shift in the way locals think and move. Outdoor enthusiasts in love with adrenaline rushes and endurance competitions have accepted yoga as a necessary complement to high-octane living. Some endorse it for the physical benefits but most have come to embrace it as a healing practice, a brain changer, and a way of seeing and being. What’s allowed this transformation to occur is how connected our teachers are with professionals in Denver and Boulder—yoga hubs as prolific as New York and Los Angeles. Twenty years ago, we were more isolated. With time and intention, Steamboat has successfully created opportunity for growth by bringing workshops and teacher trainings to town. Having established tight networks, instructors now travel regularly to work and collaborate with industry leaders. With more than 13 yoga studios, a handful of private home based studios, and over 65 certified instructors, there are

teachers and classes for everyone. We have Infrared Flow, Hot Bikram, Hatha, Iyengar, Baptiste, Vinyasa, Core, Restorative, and Yin Yoga. In the summertime, there’s yoga on the mountain and yoga in the Botanic Gardens. There’s Yoga and Beer, Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga, and Yoga Farm to Table events. Cristen Malia, one of Steamboat’s most revered teachers, has helped create connections throughout Colorado and beyond. She spearheaded efforts to invite seasoned teachers to town and saw countless diverse benefits. “Many yoga teachers in this valley have studied with and worked alongside some of the best teachers in the yoga world,” Cristen points out. “That says a lot about what Steamboat offers.” Satiating the robust appetite for festivals and retreats, the Steamboat Movement Fest is in its third year. 2017 presenters include Bibi McGill, Jeanie Manchester, Valerie D’Ambrosio, Justin Kaliszewski, and Rob Loud. “Steamboat Movement Fest weaves in so perfectly with our culture,” Cristen says. “It speaks to our desire to be outside, move our bodies, and connect with others.” With a lot of up-and-coming young teachers and boutique yoga studios that are simultaneously cutting edge and true to yoga’s historical lineage, it’s easy to find yoga that delivers. “Once people get into the studios,” Cristen explains, “they see so many different layers of the practice that are healing and uplifting. It’s yoga that reminds us to breathe, trust our intuition, and remember who we are.”
Rakta Hot Yoga Studio
Cristen Malia’s passion for yoga and decade of teaching experience are apparent in the classes she offers: they’re invigorating and dynamic, flowing with the breath, and challenging for the body and mind. Cristen serves on Rusty Wells’ Bhakti Flow Yoga teacher training staff, is a spiritual teacher for the Foundry Addiction Recovery Center, and teaches local teacher trainings and weekly public classes in Steamboat. With Valerie D’Ambrosia, she will be leading Play Big: The World Needs Your Light, a heart-opening, expansive, fun, and restorative week-long retreat at Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort in Nosara, Costa Rica, March 10, 2018 - March 17, 2018. @cristenraemalia, cmalia@gmail.com

Her professor told her to make something hollow, but she made something with missing parts instead. Rather than sculpting a horse that was empty inside, she sculpted a horse with long, lean legs and only the fundamental components of its head and body. Cast bronze sculpture typically has a heavy feel. Sandy’s use of negative space in her figures, as well as the elongation or exaggeration of body parts, conveys a sense of levity and motion that sets her work apart. The process of creating cast bronze is a labor intensive task comprised of mold making, wax pouring, wax chasing, investing, casting, welding, metal chasing, sandblasting, and finishing. Sandy’s distinctive look has drawn the attention of artists and bronze sculpture collectors worldwide. True to Sandy’s way of seeing and doing things a little differently, she immanently created a kind of art that is both unique and universal. “My work is kind of modern, kind of rustic, kind of western,” Sandy says. Her form lands somewhere between real and abstract. Her Stylized Art takes something real and nameable and tweaks it into something slightly off. Elements of her work bring to mind Salvadore Dali’s surrealism—a melting watch, a rejection of rigidity. After college, neither Sandy nor the art world was ready for her sculptures. For 16 years, she taught art at the Steamboat Mountain School and experimented with all sorts of mediums and styles. She saw firsthand how many different ways there were to make a perfect piece of art. She learned how to throw things away and how to resist the pull of perfection. She learned to embrace her confidence and her willingness to take risks. When the time was right, Sandy left the teaching world behind and threw herself into sculpting and the use of negative space. “Three dimension is my personal way of thinking,” Sandy explains. “It’s always been an easier way for me to represent what’s in my brain.” Capturing thoughts, moments, and feelings in a tactile form makes sense to Sandy. While her art requires brawn and function—metal files, welding clamps, and a torch, it also requires engineering—an understanding of form and volume. But it’s the visceral experience that gives each piece its power. “My art comes from a lifetime of experiences—playing with clay and riding horses since I was little. Every experience builds upon another and transforms into something new.” This is where Sandy’s willingness to take risks, do things a little differently, and oppose perfection becomes so valuable. Using her trained skill, wealth of knowledge, and personal aesthetics, she lets the process guide her and the sculptures form themselves. “The emotional draw is the power of art,” Sandy asserts. “Whether people can articulate the emotional piece or not, it has to be there.”

Summer Fly Fishing Brooklyn Outfitter Looking for the best fly fishing in Steamboat Springs? Look no further than the month of July! This year, the lighter snowpack and unusual spring conditions have combined for an interesting outlook on this summer’s fly fishing. Currently, the Yampa River through downtown and the Chuck Lewis State Wildlife access are at their absolute peak for dry fly fishing with green drakes, PMDs, yellow sallies, and caddis hatches. Mid-morning may fly hatches and late evening caddis hatches can provide anglers with time frames in which other river users may not be as prevalent. As the summer progresses into August, anglers will need to follow the water. With a slightly below average snow pack in the Yampa drainage, alternative local drainages should be recognized as possible fisheries. The Elk River drainage received a normal snow pack this winter. Public access to both the North and South Fork of the Elk River provides cooler water temperatures as the summer continues on—and that means happier trout. When is a river too low and hot to fish? As protectors of the future of trout fishing, anglers are responsible for understanding where and when to fish to help trout populations flourish and to provide future anglers with the same opportunities we enjoy now. Bring a thermometer with you when you fish. Place it at the bottom of the river for about a minute, or approximately two feet down in faster moving water. If you’re reading water temperatures greater than 68 degrees, you might want to think about fishing another river. Most folks also tend to forget that although the air temperature is cooler in the evenings, the river still retains the day’s heat. Rock and gravel river bottoms absorb the sun’s heat, which continues to permeate throughout the evening. For a best bet, fish early in the morning on the lower water drainages and then move to another river for midday or evening fishing. Due to cooler nights, higher elevation creeks are fantastic for fishing in the dog days of summer. Steamboat Springs is one of the greatest trout fisheries in the entire country. With a lifetime of rivers, creeks, streams, and lakes, it’s no wonder so many people travel, live, and vacation to our slice of heaven. Go out there and challenge yourself to find all of northwest Colorado’s wonderful hidden gems. They will not disappoint! Colin Taylor

First Class Equine Transport It’s All About the Horses Annick Chappot-Look was in Saas-Fee, Switzerland racing the Alpine Skiing World Cup circuit when she saw the poster. An ad for the Steamboat Ski Area, it pictured the iconic More Barn behind two cowboys on horseback carrying their skis through a field of snow. Growing up in Switzerland, Annick’s two passions in life were skiing and horses. As a kid, she watched Western films and fell in love with Quarter Horses. When she saw this poster, she realized she could ski and ride at the same time. She knew Steamboat was her destination. With her professional ski career behind her, Annick married into a third generation Routt County ranch family and spent time riding her horses. She bought a four-horse trailer to get to local trailheads. Friends without trailers and friends whose trailers had broken down started calling her for rides. While driving other horses around, Annick researched the horse transport industry. Knowing that horses need constant, personalized care—especially when they can become anxious, Annick saw room for improvement. In 2006, she combined her knowledge of natural horsemanship, her experience, and her passion and founded First Class Equine Transport.
Annick’s business is based on service. She knows she can’t force a 1,200 pound horse into a trailer and she works patiently with each animal. She’s selective about the routes she drives and the way she applies and releases the brakes. Annick unloads the horses every night at hand-picked horse motels, providing tailored care and accommodating special diets and medical needs. Her caution, judgment, and level of detail are what earn her clients’ trust. Coming from Switzerland where the roads are really tight, Annick isn’t afraid of a tough drive. She transports world class horses valued at a couple hundred thousand dollars apiece and is highly recommended by Olympic dressage riders. “Sometimes I have seven or eight horses in my trailer,” Annick says, “but I’m comfortable driving long distances, tight switchbacks, and high elevations.” Annick’s routes take her from British Columbia and California to Illinois and Florida. Last year, she logged 88,000 miles. Some years she’s logged more. The trailer Annick drives now is an Elite Head to Head equipped with stalls and box stalls for up to nine horses, live stream audio and video monitoring, automatic waterers, and a cooling system. The trailer is 44 feet long with eight and a half foot ceilings. Annick designed the trailer herself, inspired by the famous ceiling at The Venetian in Las Vegas for the sky decal. Knowing that it’s up to her to make good decisions for the horses, she also installed toys for their entertainment and a sound system to play classical music.

Ranches Without Responsibility All in a Day’s Work Ranching is all about the lifestyle. Morning fog lifts quietly off the valley floor after a cool summer sunrise. A mountain stream flows through a lush aspen glade. Leather reins rest comfortably in your hands as you head out to move cattle. Ranching offers a unique connection to the land and its animals. The lifestyle itself somehow slows time down. And yet, chores need to be done, fences need to be fixed, and snow needs to be plowed. Ranchers can plan for long, productive hours in the tractor, but the unexpected reliably creeps in and requires adaptation to unforeseen circumstances. Is it possible to enjoy the ranch lifestyle without all of the responsibility? In a word: absolutely! Carefully crafted shared amenity ranches offer all of the benefits of ranch ownership with none of the hard work. These community ranches grant more than enough space to stretch out and wander, enjoy the various vistas, connect to the earth, and slow down. They create agricultural and recreational opportunities for owners, families, and friends to enjoy. Ranch managers and staff take care of daily and unexpected needs as well as upkeep of the property, allowing for an effortless ownership experience within minutes of downtown Steamboat Springs. From Those Who Chose Steamboat Chef Kate Van Rensselaer Rench attended the French Culinary
Institute, New York City, in 1998. After graduating with the Jacques Pepin award, she began her career at Jean-Georges Restaurant and felt her culinary expression come to fruition:
technically innovative, delicately prepared French-Asian fusion cuisine. Kate was promoted to Chef de Partie of Garde Manger
before becoming the Executive Chef at Hayday Country Market/
Balduccis in CT. In 2001, Kate joined Café Diva and was offered the Executive Chef position and eventually partnership. Through
her fresh, flavorful, seasonally changing menus, Chef Kate

“I originally moved to Steamboat in 1994 to try the ‘ski bum’ thing. In 1996, I left my sister and brotherin-law here when I moved back east to further my culinary career. After years of moving around in high paced restaurant environments, I found myself flying over Rabbit Ears to visit my newborn niece and thinking: I’m finally back home. I wanted and needed this small community and healthy lifestyle. The Steamboat curse got me! Steamboat has proven to be better than I imagined—I can work long hard hours at Café Diva and spend my days off being somewhere I love and doing something I love. I met my husband here and started my own family (just dogs though). We love to hike, bike, ski, snowboard, camp, canoe, snowshoe, and skate ski. You name it, we love to do it.” ~ Kate Rench, Executive Chef/Owner, Café Diva

“I graduated from veterinary school 22 years ago and was fortunate to have the opportunity to move back into the mountains to work. Being raised on a ranch in neighboring Jackson County, I had many Routt County memories from my childhood—Steamboat was always the place to go for fun, supplies, and a few emergency room visits. Routt County is an incredible environment for animals and pets, and the people here take phenomenal care of their four legged friends. There’s a good number of large and small animal care resources and a three hour drive puts you into world class services at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Steamboat is a wonderful area to raise two boys and be a veterinarian. With so many activities and organizations, the options for involvement are endless.” ~ Dr. Lee Meyring, Steamboat Veterinary Hospital

**Year of Supply: Active inventory divided by number sold in prior 12 month period. **Sales data is from the Steamboat Springs multiple listing service and the prior 12 months from the date specified.
Our favorite chart – We view properties under contract as the best indicator of market activity. As you can see, 2016 was a very busy year and 2017 has started out significantly stronger. With a declining inventory, very high cost to build, and strong sales, it’s reasonable to anticipate prices will rise.
