RANCH HISTORY On May 26, 1875 the elder Alfred McCellen McCargar and his family crossed over the Little Snake River, making their way to Hahn’s Peak. Within two years the family had moved from Hahn’s Peak to Snake River, eventually settling near Slater, CO. Alfred Henry McCargar, the current owner’s great uncle, was born November 8th, 1893 in Slater, CO on the old McIntosh ranch. He acquired the nickname Babe and was well known in the Little Snake River and the Hahn’s Peak area as Babe McCargar. He went to school on the family’s ranch below Baggs, Wyoming. His parents separated and it became his job to raise and support his family. In doing so, he sold the family’s ranch below Baggs, Wyoming and started out on his own. He began buying “little dabs of ground” and putting them together. Among the first was Wes Fleming’s ranch on Gold Blossom Creek at the foot of the Big Piney Mountain. Next he added two ranches from Max Smiley and little by little Alfred Henry added a few sheep and cattle. Summit Creek Ranch was one of the properties Alfred Henry McCargar collected and passed down to his heirs over the ensuing generations. It was purchased April 11th, 1950 from Wilbur and Stella Bemis along with the water rights. The ranch has been used for agriculture over the last 69 years and haying and grazing cattle and sheep have been ongoing operations.
