Local photographer captures
surprise homecoming for military family by Danielle Swan DSmith@thepaperofwabash.com
As a photographer, Amy Brown, Bella Bloom Fotos, is no stranger to capturing pivotal moments in the lives of her clients. Over the holidays, she was given the opportunity to capture one such moment for Raymond and Caitlyn Wilson and their five-month-old son. Caitlyn, a Wabash High School graduate, is a member of the Army National Guard. She currently resides in Fort Wayne, where she attends Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne. Raymond is an active duty Marine, currently deployed on a 24-month tour in Japan. The couple married on Aug. 13, 2011, just two weeks after the birth of their son, Paxsten. “Raymond was able to do recruiter’s assistance and come home for the birth,” Caitlyn explained. “About two and a half to three weeks after the baby was born, he left and that was the last time he saw him.” This year would be the Wilsons’ first Christmas as a family, and they had hoped to spend it together. The request process began in October. “I put in my leave request, which isn’t guaranteed or anything, but I put it in saying I’d like to take the days off and go back to the states to visit with my wife and son,” Raymond said. The request was approved in mid-November, but Raymond did not tell Caitlyn. “I was pretty upset about it. In my mind, I was positive he wasn’t coming home,” Caitlyn said. Since she would not be spending Christmas with her new husband, Caitlyn hired Bella Bloom Fotos to take pictures of her and Paxsten to send to Raymond for Christmas. “We took the photos and I posted them on Facebook and she talked to Raymond and the next day he called me,” Amy said. Raymond wanted to set up an appointment for family photos during the short time that he would be home, but he did not want to risk the surprise of his homecoming being leaked to Caitlyn. “I got Amy’s voicemail a few times and had to keep calling, I didn’t want to take the chance of leaving a voicemail and her accidentally calling Caitlyn back,” he said. When Raymond and Amy made contact, an elaborate scheme was concocted. “I asked him how he was going to surprise her and he said he didn’t know, so I said ‘Why don’t we do it here?” Amy said. Shortly thereafter, Amy called Caitlyn with an offer. She asked if Caitlyn would be interested in doing a promotional photo shoot for an upcoming fictional military special. Raymond’s plane was set to land at 8 a.m. on Dec. 22, so Amy asked if Caitlyn could come at 11 a.m. that day. When everything was set in stone, Amy sent a message to Raymond that said: “She’s in.” During the following weeks, anticipation mounted as Amy and Raymond kept their secret. Amy listened as Caitlyn discussed, on Facebook, the fact that she would not be seeing her husband until May. “She had no idea we were already planning this and that it wasn’t going to be May, it was going to be a couple weeks,” Amy said. “It made the anticipation stronger, but it also made more pressure. There’s a lot of pressure in pulling off a surprise like that. One little thing could throw the whole thing off.” Amy and her assistant, Hayley, choreographed Raymond’s arrival, developed code words and arranged the room so that they would be prepared to photograph and video the emotional event. It began to play out on the morning of Dec. 21 when Raymond boarded his first plane at Okinawa, Japan. From there, he flew to Tokyo, Japan, and then to Los Angeles, Calif., before finally arriving at Fort Wayne International Airport on Dec. 22 at 8 a.m. In order to guard the surprise, Raymond had to do some planning for the 26hour flight, during which he would be out of contact with Caitlyn. He and Caitlyn usually made contact via Skype, a video chatting program, every day (continued on page 2)

(continued from front page) around 4 p.m. and again around 10 p.m., as well as sending text messages throughout the day. “He had told me he had duty, which is where they have to watch over things for certain hours, so I knew he couldn’t text,” Caitlyn said. She didn’t hear from him until much later when he was on what he told her was his lunch, which was actually a five-hour layover at Los Angeles International Airport.
“He had texted me and I asked him if he could Skype and he acted like he fell asleep. Since I knew he would have been tired, I let it go,” she said. On the morning of Dec. 22, Caitlyn dressed Paxsten in an outfit that said, “All I Want For Christmas is my Daddy Home”, and headed to Amy’s house for the photo shoot. Raymond’s friend picked him up at the airport and took him home, where the babysitter
unlocked the apartment, so he could take a shower and change into his uniform. He stopped to purchase a bouquet of flowers then headed to Amy’s house. Caitlyn arrived at 11 a.m., and she and Amy talked for a while before they began taking photos. A short while into the session, Paxsten was having a bottle break when the doorbell rang. Amy had informed Caitlyn that a client would be coming over to pick up
prints. “I heard the doorbell ring and just didn’t think anything of it and we just kept taking pictures,” Caitlyn said. Hayley let Raymond into the house and gave him instructions. “She told him to walk fast because we didn’t want Caitlyn to come out of the photo area, then the lighting would be messed up,” Amy said. Caitlyn was sitting on the floor, holding Paxsten when she heard footsteps on the stairs. “I wasn’t paying attention to him coming behind me,” Amy said. “I heard him, but I was focused on her face and in the first picture she has that “mother face”, she hears something but she doesn’t know what it is, but she’s ready. Then the next one is recognition, then surprise.” “I couldn’t really see because it was dark and Amy was still taking pictures and then she started flashing the camera a whole bunch and I was confused and the next thing I know, I

Caitlyn continued, “Then we just started hugging and I gave him Paxsten. I was very happy, I was holding back tears.” The couple spent the holidays with friends and family. Raymond returned to
Japan on Jan. 1. His tour will be complete in October of 2012, at which point he will be stationed somewhere within the United States. “Hopefully it will be North Carolina but it might be California, either way it’s better than Japan,” he said. “Whenever I get orders back to the States, Caitlyn will let her unit know and they are going to set her up with another unit where I’m stationed so her and
Paxsten can move with me.” Amy felt privileged to have the honor of being involved in such a cherished event in the Wilsons’ lives. “You can’t script life and very rarely do you get to capture those raw elements of life on film,” she said. “It’s just raw emotion behind it and that was probably the rawest I’ve ever been involved with. I’m glad they let me be a part of it.”

Lt. Governor unveils local government recommendations
After traveling to 27 counties for roundtable discussions with local elected officials, Lt. Governor Skillman released a report containing local government recommendations that could be addressed as early as this year. The report touches on items from fiscal flexibility, to professionalism standards, to joint purchasing expansion. “These ideas come straight from local elected leaders, who witness firsthand all the benefits and consequences of state government and legislative action,” Lt.
Governor Skillman said. “As a former county official and legislator, I know collaboration can lead to giant leaps forward in the way we provide services to Hoosiers.” In July, Lt. Governor Skillman embarked on her “Hoosier Crossroads Tour”, which will eventually take her to all 92 counties by the end of 2012. Thus far, she has met face-toface with nearly 200 mayors, county commissioners and local elected officials, seeking their advice on how the state and locals can better work together. She was
joined at the press conference by representatives of the Association of Indiana Counties and the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns. Not surprisingly due to the recession, the most common challenge reported by local governments was lack of sufficient revenue. While Skillman insisted the property tax caps that have saved taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars must stay in place, she is advocating fiscal flexibility at the local level. Flexibility measures include allowing
transfers of surplus revenue to maintain roads and streets, a change in the 911 funding mechanism, broadening the options for legal advertising, and a referendum process for local units of government that need more operating revenue, similar to existing processes for schools. More joint purchasing options and preapproved infrastructure plans from the state could also save local taxpayers millions of dollars. Lt. Governor Skillman also strongly supports adoption of anti-nepotism and

conflict of interest statutes for local elected officials, additional streamlining of township government, and a standard of excellence certification for local officials and units of government that meet model state standards. “Today, it’s a necessity for every official to seek ways to streamline government and improve services,” Lt. Governor Skillman said. “By working in partnership, we can create more efficiency and continue to move our communities forward.”

Downtown Wabash welcomes Artistica Gallery
As Downtown Wabash shifts toward a focus on arts and entertainment, Joyce DeVore is following that movement by opening Artistica Gallery, 70-74 W. Market St., Wabash. DeVore is the
daughter of Jo Wood, owner of the longstanding downtown family business, Woods Framing and Art, and the gallery will be a division of that business. As DeVore began to express more of an
interest in the business, the family began considering the idea of adding an art gallery. “We batted that idea around and dropped it for awhile, Wood said. “This summer, she
came in and said, ‘I don’t know, Mom, I’d still like for you to put the gallery in. At that point, they decided to go forward with that plan. In the fall, they began rearranging and removing the craft merchandise from the store. They donated thousands of dollars worth of craft supplies to local teachers and nonprofit organizations. They began a remodeling project, which included new flooring, paint, woodwork, carpet and track lighting, and opening a doorway between the gallery side of the store and the retail side. All of this work was completed by family, and they had planned to rely heavily on Jo’s husband, Dick, and his expertise in construction work. Unfortunately, that plan did not come to fruition when Dick became ill and passed away on Nov. 7. Jo and Joyce will

House Democrats silence Hoosiers voices No show on Day One of session
Rep. Rebecca Kubacki (R-Syracuse) and her House Republican colleagues came ready to get back to work on Jan. 4; however, a majority of the House Democrats did not show up to do the work of the people. They failed to attend the start of the 2012 legislative session, which prevented all legislators from moving forward. “As legislators, we are paid by the taxpayer to show up for work, debate critical issues such as getting Hoosier’s back to work and vote on the issues brought before us,” said Rep.
Kubacki. “It is hard to do that when a majority of House Democrats don’t bother to show up for work. A day’s pay for a day’s work evidently does not apply to the House Democrats.”
In the Indiana House of Representatives, in order for a bill list to be handed down, a quorum of 67 members must be present. The Democrats denied this quorum,

late last night by members of the US Marshal Service in Allen County on three outstanding felony arrest warrants issued out of Wabash County. It is alleged that Mr. Miracle committed revocation of probation on his original charge of child molesting (Class C Felony), child solicitation (Class D Felony), and failing to register as a sex offender (Class D Felony). During the course of the one-month investigation to locate Mr. Miracle, information was gathered by Sgt. Steve Hicks,
which led officers to believe he was hiding in Allen County. After receiving a tip that subjects would be meeting with Mr. Miracle at an unknown location in Allen County, the US Marshal Service was contacted and asked to assist in the investigation. A team of Deputy US Marshals was able to set up surveillance

Human trafficking bill passes unanimously out of committee

State Sen. Jim Banks (R-Columbia City) announced legislation he coauthored, to toughen Indiana’s human trafficking laws, passed out of the Senate Committee on C o r r e c t i o n s , Criminal, and Civil Matters by a vote of 90. Senate Bill 4 makes it unlawful to arrange for a person to participate in any forced sexual act. Currently, Indiana law only prohibits forced marriage and prostitution. “This is a serious
worldwide problem epidemic - and it’s growing,” Banks said. According to the U.S. State Department’s 2010 Trafficking in Persons Report, around 12.3 million adults and children are trafficked across international borders into forced labor and sexual exploitation worldwide. Due to events surrounding the upcoming Super Bowl in February, it was essential for the bill to begin the legislative process immediately. Organized criminals who exploit young
women and children through human trafficking gravitate to such gatherings, according to Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller. Currently, legal loopholes within Indiana laws could allow some forms of the human trafficking activity to go unprosecuted. “This law would close those loopholes,” Banks explained. “With the Super Bowl coming to our state, we must give our law enforcement the tools to effectively prosecute traffickers.”
Recently, Indiana earned a D grade from Shared Hope International, a leading sexual-trafficking awareness group, on the effectiveness of human trafficking laws within the Hoosier state. Gov. Volunteers celebrate the life of Dr. King with lifesaving fire safety information
“Life’s most persistent question,” Dr. King once asked, “is what are you doing for others?” This Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, American Red Cross and HOPE worldwide volunteers are doing a lot for others in Wabash and surround communities. They are distributing vital fire safety information to help Wabash residents prevent home fires, protect their loved ones and strengthen their community. Numerous volunteers from the American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization that helps people prepare, prevent and respond to emergencies, will join volunteers from HOPE worldwide, a faith-based volunteer organization, to distribute the information. They need help to reach more people
within the community. Volunteers will canvass door-to-door, talk with residents and leave behind door hangers with fire safety information. The door hangers include information about smoke alarms, creating a household fire escape plan and tips for cooking and heating a home safely this winter. This will take place on Jan. 14, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will meet at 11 a.m. at the Wabash County Red Cross Office, 88 W. Hill St., Wabash. Home fires are Wabash County’s most prevalent disaster threat. Please call the Red Cross offices with any questions at 260-5632658 or if you or a group would like to help volunteer for this event. The American Red Cross is a United Fund agency.

ONE THING THAT HAS BEEN ON THE MINDS of the residents of Manchester is the rash of burglaries and thefts. The thieves have not singled out just the businesses. Residences have been broken into as well. In light of what is happening, we may want to be a little more vigilant. Make sure our doors and windows are locked. Be mindful of leaving expensive items in
our cars overnight where someone might be able to steal them. Also, be aware of our surroundings, what I mean is, are there strangers hanging around the neighborhood, do you hear or see something out of place? These are things we can communicate to our police department. I am confident our police officers are doing everything possible to catch the perpetrators. There have been
reports of arrests and I trust there will be more to follow. B I R T H D AY S : Yours or your friend or loved one could be here. Charley Creek Gardens announces Fourth Annual Seed Exchange
The Charley Creek Gardens Fourth Annual Seed Exchange is scheduled for Jan. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. The Seed Exchange provides an opportunity for gardeners to share seeds that they have collected from their gardens or to acquire a seed they have been looking for. In addition, gardeners can share information with each other. There are many benefits to participating in a seed exchange: 1.The Exchange saves gardeners from having to order seeds on-line; 2. The quantity can be controlled (not everyone needs an entire packet); 3. The event is free of charge; and 4. Bringing seeds is not a requirement to attend. The Seed Categories for the
event are: herbs, vegetables, annuals, native plants and perennials. The Charley Creek Gardens already has a limited supply of seeds for each category. Guests need to arrive between 9 and 10 a.m. to drop off and have seeds categorized. At 10 a.m., individual seed selection will begin where each person will have the opportunity to select one packet from each category. The open seed swap will begin after the individual seed selection. There is no charge for this event. Light refreshments will be served. Please call the Education and Resource Center at 260-563-1020 for further information. Don’t have seeds to exchange? Don’t worry, there will be plenty!

Northfield wrestling competes at New Haven Invite Jan. 7
On Jan. 7, the Northfield wrestling team took to the mats at the New Haven Invitational in what turned out to be a good test for the team and each individual wrestler. Homestead won for the second year in a row followed by Leo and New Haven. Northfield had three individuals in championships matches, but came away with only one individual at the top of the podium. Joseph Ross led the way for Northfield through out the day by dominating his opponents. Ross’s
first match of the day went the distance before ending with a score of 21-7. In his last two matches, Ross won by way of tech falling his opponents 18-3 and 194 in the finals. On the day, the only points scored Ross included 13 escapes and 1 penalty point. Offensively, Ross racked up 58 points. Placing second for Northfield were seniors Hunter Well and Tanner Chamberlain. Both faced tough competition on their way to the finals. Wells pinned his first two opponents both in the first period, but then
faced Homestead’s Frank Martin who had only one loss on the year. The match was close throughout ending at 4-6 with Hunter in second place. Both Hunter and Martin have only on loss each for the season. Chamberlain also pinned both of his first two opponents to make it to his first finals match of his high school career. His opponent Nolan Appel, was also from Homestead, and Tanner ended in second place by a score of 3-9. Third-place winners were Thomas
Rockenbaugh, Jared Kirtlan and Spencer Miller. Thomas and Spencer were both beaten by the firstplace finisher in their weight class. All three wrestlers had tough losses and came back strong to take third place with 3-1 records for the day. Cody Curless was the lone fourth place finisher going 2-2 on the day. In fifth place for Northfield was Cody Smalley. Cody has had some ups and downs this year and this was one of his better days on the mat. He won his first match 13-6 and was

Norse edge Valley Big third quarter lifts in defensive battle Lady Apaches over Knights by Gary Andrews It was the battle of two veteran coaches. Northfield coach Moe Smedley was looking for his 399th career win and Hall of Fame coach Bill Patrick was seeking number 690. Patrick is still seeking 690 as Northfield defeated Tippecanoe Valley 40-34 Friday to give Valley their first TRC loss. Valley started the game off going up 5-0 before the Norse gained their composure. Ryan Keaffaber and Chad Glasscock hit to make it 54 and eventually went up 7-6 on a Collin Dawes bucket. After a Valley three pointer, Ryan Givens connected on two free throws and Valley led 9-8 after one. Givens gave the Norse the lead to start the second before the Vikings went on a 6-0 run to take a 15-10 lead. Northfield would then go on a run of their own. Keaffaber started a 9-0 run with four points, followed by a bucket from Givens and a three from Glasscock to give the Norse the lead at 19-15. Valley would hit the final two buckets of the quarter and led the Norse 20-19 at the half. After a Valley free throw and two from Dawes and one from Keaffaber the Norse led again 22-21. Back came Valley, hitting the next two buckets to take a 25-22 lead. Givens converted a three-point play to tie the score at 25 and then hit a rebound bucket at the buzzer to give the Norse a 27-25 lead after three. Valley’s Jeffery Tillman would start the fourth quarter hitting backto-back three pointers to put the Vikings up 31-27. Chad Glasscock answered with a three and a two of his own, putting the Norse back up 32-31. Ryan Givens picked up his 4th foul with 4:00 to go as Valley converted the three-point play to go back up 34-32. Glasscock would answer again with two free throws with 1:39 remaining knotting the score at 34. After a blown Valley possession it was Glasscock again, hitting with 1:12 to play and Northfield clinging to a 36-34 lead. On the next Valley possession Northfield stole the ball and called time out with 42.7 left. Valley fouled. Glasscock missed two free throws before redeeming himself with a steal. Valley was forced to foul with 17.7 left. Glasscock hit both free throws, increasing the Norse lead to 38-34. Valley missed the shot and then fouled, Glasscock again with 12.1 seconds remaining. Glasscock hit both shots, which would be the final two points of the game, scoring all 13 of Northfield’s fourth quarter points. CLAIRE CROMER tries to get the Lady Apache offense into a fast break during the Jan. 7 contest with the Southwood Lady Knights. Southwood was able to keep the score close throughout the first half, but ultimately the Lady Apaches pulled away late in the game with a 54-31 victory. (photo by Gary Andrews) by Gary Andrews In a rematch from game one of the county tourney, which Wabash claimed with a 48-32 victory, the Southwood Lady Knights hosted the Apaches in a regular season game Jan. 7 with revenge on their mind. The Lady Apaches looked to prove the earlier victory was no
fluke and showcase how they had won six straight county titles. This time, the Apaches used an explosive third quarter to defeat the Knights 54-31. The first three points of the game were scored on free throws by the Cromer sisters, Kelsey and Claire before Katie Stouffer connected on
two of her own to make it 3-2 without a bucket scored. Wabash, playing their bench early, got buckets from Katelin Vogel and Charlie Pardo to increase the lead to 7-2 before Kelsey Cromer drained a three and the first quarter ended with a 10-2 Apache lead. Jessica Pegg and Kelsey Cromer would trade threes to start the second quarter before Emily Murphy went to work. Murphy hit three buckets in a row, forcing Wabash to call a time out, then hit a free throw to make it 13-12. Marin Hill and Claire Cromer made it 17-12, followed by a Katie Stouffer bucket and to pull within three at 17-14. Kelsey Cromer then drained her third three of the half as Wabash went to the locker room leading 20-14. Kelsey Cromer and Marin Hill would hit, followed by a Kyleigh Hampton three as Wabash started the third quarter on a 7-0

run, stretching the lead to 27-14. After two Katie Stouffer free throws made it 27-16 the Apaches would score the next six points as the lead stretched to 33-16, forcing the Knights to call a time out. Stouffer would hit coming out of the timeout, before Wabash went on its next run, this time a 10-0 run aided by Kelsey Cromer’s fourth and fifth threes of the game that made it 43-18 before Sarah White ended the quarter with a bucket. At the end of three, Wabash led 43-20. Sarah Puckett started the scoring for Wabash in the fourth quarter with two free throws. Southwood then got buckets from Murphy and Pegg to make it 47-25. The 22point deficit was as close as the Knights would get as the Apaches cruised to the 54-31 victory. Leading Wabash was Kelsey Cromer with 23 points, six rebounds and three (continued on page 21)
