Veteran’s Day observed at ceremony in Peru

A Veteran’s Day Service was held at Peru Jr./Sr. High School, Friday, Nov. 11, in the school auditorium.

The ceremony began with the Peru Jr./Sr. High School jazz band playing music for attendees as they entered.

Brianna Fromm, the Peru Jr./Sr. High School student body president served as the emcee.

Principal Paul Frye welcomed all in attendance.

The jazz band played a “Salute to America’s Finest” and Elwood Preschoolers lead everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Swing Choir sang the National Anthem followed by Pastor Bette Thompson of the Parkview United Methodist Church offering prayer.

Two Blair Pointe Students were presented awards from the Indiana American Legion Flag Education Program. Bob Blair of the VFW gave the awards to Harper Hines and Nathan Hochstedlar.

Active-duty personnel and Veterans were asked to stand and be recognized.

Guest Speaker, Jay Kendall, Veterans Service Officer of Miami County was the guest speaker for the event.

Kendall is a graduate of North Miami High School. He entered the United States Air Force Academy June 25, 1974, and was commissioned May 31, 1978. He was a C-141/C-135 pilot. After four years at the academy and over 20 years of trips to 75 countries and all 50 states, Kendall retired Aug. 1, 1998, at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and has been the Miami County Veterans’ Service Officer since Jan. 1, 1999. He has been very instru mental in obtaining 32 million a year for Miami County in Veteran benefits.

After Kendall’s address, all were invited to step outside of the school for the 21-gun salute. Emily Rodeck played “Taps.”

N & N 400 W, Macy. The area was checked, but this was unable to be located.

A two-vehicle crash was re ported at N St. Rd. 19 and E Broadway St, Denver. No in juries were re ported.

A limb fell on a vehicle while parked overnight in the area of 188 W Broadway St, Bunker Hill. Offi cers attempted to contact the com plainant, but no answer was given.

A com plainant at 1626 E 400 S, Peru had a question regard ing a vehicle reg istered to the male but the wife drives it. They are contemplat ing divorce, and she wants to know if he can take it from her. The male did not have a valid dri ver’s license.

A caller at 151

W Third St, Green Valley Apartments, Apt. 7, Bunker Hill had questions re garding child cus tody. A caller added that his two-year-old son had suffered in juries every week while with his mother for the last three weeks. The latest injury has been a broken leg. The caller said he received a text message threatening sui cide at 2 a.m. that day. They re ported concerns to the Depart ment of Child Services and was apprehensive to return the child to the mother at 6 p.m. The caller was told officers could not suggest he violate a cus tody order and was advised to act

on his best judge ment. Violating the custody order could result in civil or criminal penalty. He caller then requested the mother’s wel fare be checked.

A two-vehicle property damage crash was re ported at W St. Rd. 218 and W 600 S, Peru. A state report was com pleted.

Officers re sponded to the area of 13783 S 400 W, Kokomo for a civil dispute over property. The male moving from the resi dence reported that he was miss ing some items. A theft investiga tion was initi ated.

Threats were reported at 8266 S 250 W, Bunker Hill. Officers were unable to lo cate anyone at the residence.

Burglary was reported at 3449 W St. Rd. 218, Brookside Estates Mobile Home

Park, Lot 8, Peru. This is an ongo ing investigation.

Suspicious people and bicy cles were re ported at S Wallick Rd. and Riverside Dr, Peru. Neither people nor bicy cles were located.

Officers spoke to a complainant at 3198 S Wallick Rd, Peru, who re quested a tres pass warning be issued to the mother of his children for his address. The fe male does not live in the area. Offi cers have not been able to make contact with the female.

Officers re sponded to the area of 3449 W St. Rd. 218, Brook side Estates Mo bile Home Park, Lot 10, Peru for a male yelling in the area. Male was transported by medics to a local hospital due to his impair ment level.

A report of gunshots in the area of 185 W Commerce St, Macy was taken. Suspect left the area prior to law enforcement ar rival. No damage or injuries re ported.

Officers in the area of E Com merce St. and N Columbia St, Macy stopped a vehicle driven by an unlicensed ju venile. Driver was released to his fa ther. Vehicle was released to the rear seat adult passenger.

John J. “Jack” Strank, (LTC, USAF, ret), 92, formerly of Peru, Indiana passed away at 10:02 p.m., Sun day, Nov. 6, 2022, at Tra ditions at Regan Park, Avon, In. He was born in Johnstown, Pennsyl vania, Aug. 12, 1930, the son of John and Mar cia (Chokran) Strank. On Aug. 8, 1953, Jack married Mary Louise Harkabus in Lilly, Pennsylvania, and she survives.

Jack served in the U.S. Air Force for more than 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1972. His military decorations include the Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Reserve Medal, the National De fense Service Medal, and the Air Force Longevity Medal.

Jack’s greatest joys in life were his wife and family and his Roman Catholic faith. He was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church and an active volunteer at St. Vincent DePaul. He was a regu lar volunteer at the Grissom Air Museum in Peru for many years, as well. In his spare time, he enjoyed wood working, house proj ects and he was an avid

Allen Wayne Roper, 59, of Peru passed away Friday, Nov. 4, 2022, at Ascension St. Vincent in Kokomo.

He was born in Peru, Nov. 18, 1962, to Wayne and Faye Beu lah (Jent) Roper. Allen married Diana Lynn Roper, Sept. 26, 1984, and she preceded him in death in 2019.

Allen was a great man who was loved by many. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. Allen was an avid me chanic, and he could fix anything.

He is survived by his

reader. He also loved Notre Dame football and enjoyed taking family and friends to the games during the 50 years he had season tickets.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 69 years, Mary, are daughters Kathryn Mary (Joseph) Herr of Brownsburg, IN, Susan Lynn Gregov of Mesa, AZ, Cheryl Ann Hahn of Denver, CO and Lisa Marie (Brent) Goebel of Greenwood, IN; grand children Louie (Anna) Herr, Alayna Herr, Amy Johnson, Jordan (Nicole) Hahn, Joe Hahn, Michael Goebel, and Jack Goebel; and great-grandsons Jack Herr, Colin Hahn, and Sam Hahn. He was pre ceded in death by his parents, son John J. Strank, grandson Justin M. Hahn, brother Joseph M. Strank, and sister Mary C. Vettori.

Burial celebrating the life of John J. Strank will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 2, 2022, at St. Charles Catholic Church, 58 W. 5th St., Peru, IN with Rev. Adam Mauman offici ating. Burial will be in St. Charles Catholic Cemetery with Mili tary Honors provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit. Jimmie R. Bond (SMSGT, USAF, ret.), 85, of Peru passed away at 2:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 11, 2022, at his residence. He was born in Ja sonville, Indiana, Dec. 17, 1936, the son of Roscoe and Violet Myrick Bond. Jim mar ried Bonnie Ross on April 14, 1958, and she survives.

Jim was a 1956 gradu ate of Broad Ripple High School, was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and a Cuba, Vietnam, and Desert Storm Veteran. His military decorations include the Air Medal, the Air Force Commen dation Medal, the Na tional Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

Jim was a devoted hus band, father, and grand father. He enjoyed camping, his vegetable garden and talking to everyone. He never knew a stranger.

He was also a member of Chili Baptist Church.

Bob is survived by his wife of nearly 47 years, Marilyn Cleveland.

Bob is survived as well by two great-grandchil dren, Berkeley Jackson and Madden Burk.

A memorial service immediately followed. No graveside service was held.

Vehicle parts were dumped on the roadway at E 400 N & N 600 E, Peru. Bowman's recovered the parts.

A fence row fire was reported at 2292 W 1150 N, Macy. The Fire De partment re sponded but would not talk to the fire started about his fire getting out to ward a neighbor’s field. Officers checked the area. The burnt area consumed some brush near a cut field, but not the field itself. There was no monetary loss to anyone in volved. No contact was made with ei ther party.

Girls Varsity Bas ketball beats Manchester

The Lady Braves opened their season at home with TRC opponent, Man chester. The Lady Braves started the game out slow and got down 11-18 after the first quarter. Then they settled down in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Squires 20 -12 to take a one-point lead going into half. Both teams scored eight points in the third quarter going into the fourth quarter, then in the fourth quarter the Lady Braves took control with about two minutes left and made just enough free-throws to hold on to get the season opener 4945.

Lady Braves were led in scoring by Miranda Stoll with 20 points and eight

rebounds, Hallie Maiben scored 11 points and Bailey Carson had nine points and five as sists. Courtney Stoll led the Lady Braves with nine rebounds to go along with her five points. Shaelyn Powell had the duty to guarding Man chester’s top scorer and held her to just two points in the second half. The bench played an im portant role in the win today. Chloe Smyth, Maddie Wibel, Sydney Barnes, and Addie Maiben all came in at important times and contributed to the win.

The Tigers wel comed the Culver Academies Lady Eagles to Tig-Arena on a snowy Satur day morning. The Tigers started slow and then turned on the pressure late but could not over come the early deficit. Leading the Tigers offensively was Emma El dridge with 20

points, eight re bounds, one assist, and two steals.

Christkindl markt is a Christ mas market with a German theme which starts Fri day, Nov. 18 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will take place in downtown Peru on Court and East Fifth Streets.

The market will include German and American beer, Gluhwein, hot chocolate, slushies, Eiskaffe, coffee specialty drinks as well as bratwurst, curry wurst, frank furters, schnitzel,

pork burgers, smoked chops, pretzels, German pizza, and Ger man stew. There will be candy, Ger man cookies, strudel, and other baked goods as well as hot, roasted nuts.

ances by Lisa Van Der Ploeg and Indy Polka Motion along with Christ mas music playing the entire time of the market.

There will also be wiener dog races, barrel cart rides, train rides, horse drawn wagon rides and a

real reindeer. A Christmas Parade is included in this event for all the family to enjoy.
