Money raised to help fund relocation of two railcars

Above and below are the railcars owned by Ron Short that will be restored and displayed on the west end of Peru near the Nickel Plate Trail. The cars are currently located north and west of the underpass in Peru. Short had the cars as part of a restaurant he owned for many years called The Siding.

On Nov. 28, Mike Kuepper, left, President of the Nickel Plate Trail, received donations of checks totaling over $4,600. The checks were proceeds from a tenderloin dinner held by Blair Ridge Health Campus, Peru, and from the October Miami County Train Show and Swap Meet organized by Paul Forman on the right. These funds will be used to lay the track segment needed for the railcars owned by Ron Short (center). Construction is scheduled to start this month. Nov. 18

Driving under influence was reported at E U.S. 24 and N 300 E, Peru.

A non-domestic fight was reported 2478 W Airport Rd, Peru. An arrest was made for possible battery.

A report was made at 2934 S 300 W, Lot 117, Woodland Hills Mobile Home Park, Peru of a possible no contact order violation.

A caller at 13783 S 400 W, Kokomo, had questions about how to file for a protective order.

A caller at 43014 Keesler CT, Peru had questions about a civil issue over property.

Criminal mischief was reported at 4450 E 250 N, Peru. This was unable to be located.

An overdose/poisoning was reported at 215 W Broadway St, Bunker Hill. Bunker Hill Police Department advised officers to disregard the situation prior to arrival.

Nov. 19

A coyote vs. deer crash was reported at N U.S. 31 and W St. Rd. 16, Denver. State report will be completed. Vehicle was towed by Martin’s Towing.

A female at 2831 S Hilltop Dr, Apt. 1, Peru advised her boyfriend and she got into an altercation. Female refused to cooperate with the investigation when Law Enforcement arrived on scene. The male half was no longer present.

A verbal argument was reported at 2831 S Hilltop Dr, Apt. 1, Peru. Complainant stated male left and no longer requested Law Enforcement.

Officers took a report at 2843 S Hilltop Dr, Apt. 3, Peru of a possible violation of a protection order. A case will be forwarded to the Miami County Prosecutor's Office for review.

A caller at 2207 Patrick St, Peru reported a burglary of

her home occurring overnight. A case report was completed.

A female at 1834 Norton Ave, Peru advised that her husband was violating their protective order. This is an ongoing investigation.

A report of domestic disturbance was reported at 4132 W St. Rd. 18, Kokomo. A case report is to be forwarded to Miami County Juvenile Probation.

A two-vehicle crash was reported at W 850 S and S U.S. 31, Bunker Hill. Minor damage was reported. No injuries were located. A state crash report was completed.

Reports of individuals removing property from a residence at 140 W Commerce St, Macy was taken. Individuals had authorization to remove the property from the residence.

A welfare check was attempted to be conducted at 1486 Matador St, Vohne Licke Kennels Dorms Bld. 329, 9117, Peru. Officers were unable to make contact with anyone inside residence.

A civil issue regarding a roof repair was reported at 10887 S 550 E, Amboy. Caller stated that while landlord was hiving her son fix his roof shingles fell from

the roof and scratched his truck. The caller was advised this would be civil and he would need to seek legal counsel if he wanted to pursue anything.

Officers responded to the area of 1834 Norton Ave, Peru, in reference to an ongoing series of invasions of privacy cases. Nothing new was reported. Officers advised the female to change her number for now.

Nov. 28

A two-vehicle personal injury crash

was reported at S U.S. 31 and S Bus. 31, Peru. Indiana State Police handled the situation.

A traffic accident with injuries was reported at S U.S. 31 and W 500 S, Peru.

A complainant who is on the Chili Cemetery Board at 9396 N St. Rd. 19, Denver said a man from Logansport was extremely upset over the transfer of ownership of a plot in the cemetery. The complainant said the man was acting irrationally. No direct threats or communication were received from the man, but the complainant felt intimidated due to the man’s behavioral history. The complainant was advised that no crimes had been committed and instructed to contact the clerk’s office at courthouse if she wanted to petition for a protec-

tive order.

A traffic accident with damage was reported at 2642 S Bus. 31, Best Western Circus City Inn, Peru.

A missing person was reported at 1104 W 200 N, Miami County Sheriff’s Department, Peru.

A verbal domestic abuse case was reported at S U.S. 31 and W 1350 S, Kokomo. Parties were separated.

Officers at W Logansport Rd. and S 500 W, Peru assisted Cass County with a vehicle accident with personal injury.

A car vs. deer crash was reported at 10001 S U.S. 31, RV Dynasty, Bunker Hill. No injuries were reported. A state crash report was completed.

Brandon Arven at 105 W Commerce St,

Macy, called dispatch about a tractor trailer which drove through his yard and smashed two giant rocks along with tearing up his yard. No action was taken.

An individual at 35052 Altus CT, Peru wanted to report an invasion of privacy message. The individual stated there was an ongoing case and all other messages had been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office. Officers will be following up with the prosecutor.

Suicidal thoughts were reported at 5886 E 775 S, Peru.

A report of a male subject knocking on a complainant’s windows was taken at 136 E Garfield St, Bunker Hill. Officers were unable to locate anyone in the area.

A property damage crash was reported at W 850 S and S U.S. 31, Bunker Hill. A car vs. deer crash was reported at N Eel River Rd. and N Mexico Rd, Peru. A state crash report was taken.

James (Jim) Ray Davenport 63 of Peru, went to be with his Lord and Savior Nov. 25, 2022, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, surrounded by the love and support of his children and family.

He was born in Kokomo, Indiana on April 17, 1959, to Margaret L Gressley. Later in life he recognized George Bookmiller as his father. Both parents preceded him in death.

Jim enjoyed the Dallas Cowboys, playing with his grandchildren, loved watching Cops and Ghost Stories, and loving on his dogs. He loved looking at Facebook to see what his grandchildren were doing and liking every picture posted.

Karen Sue Stapleton passed away Nov. 26, 2022, with her family by her side at Community Howard Hospital. Most knew her as Sue or Susie Q. She is preceded in death by her father, James R. Blythe, mother, Hattie Blythe, brother, Jim Blythe, nephew, Richard Blythe, brother-in-law that was like her brother, William Ray, and her baby, Heather Stapleton.

Sue is survived by her son Steve (Denise) Ostafin, daughter Melissa (Danny Clifton Jr.), sister Dianne Ray, brother Rick (Angie) Blythe, seven grandchildren: Trista (Leroy) Clemons, Erin Bales, Stephanie Ostafin, Steven Ostafin, Zane Stapleton (favorite), Kain

Jim is survived by one sister Linda (Roy) Stickney of Chicago, brothers Rick (Bea) Davenport of Texas, and John Davenport of Indiana. His children: Randy (Charlene) Davenport of Utah, and Angela (Eric) Fornelli of Knox, and grandchildren: Ronald, Curtis, and Savanna. He is also survived by his exwife and friend Joni Davenport. He was dearly loved by his nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022, at Peru Church of The Brethren 134 E. 5th Street, Peru, Indiana 46970 from 10 a.m. to Noon. The funeral service followed at Noon with Pastor Phillip Troxell of ficiating. Burial took place following the funeral at Sunset Memory Garden 2097 W Alto Road, Kokomo, IN., 46902.

Robert Beatty Frazier, Peru, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022, at Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne.

Born April 3, 1944, in Lafayette, Tennessee, he was the son of Richard and Iris Frazier. On June 11, 1964, he was married to Linda Tyree, who survives.

He was a Computer Hardware Specialist and worked for Banc Tec and was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Frazier, Peru; daughters, Kimberly DuBina and Theresa Cooper; grandsons, Robert Warner and Matthew

Cooper; granddaughters, Danielle Cooper and Hannah Bennett; and great-grandchildren, Cassidy Warner, Evelyn Pennington, Phoenix Pennington, Lucas Pennington, and Caleb Bennett.

Suellen Hollering, 78, of Kokomo, passed away at 7:15 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 27, 2022, at the Jefferson Manor of Kokomo.

Suellen was born in Logansport, IN., Oct. 4, 1944, the daughter of James F. and Phyllis Marie Day Farrer. She married Walter “Bud” Hollering in Logansport Jan. 25, 1993, and he survives. Suellen was a Logansport High School graduate and worked as an LPN in area nursing homes for more than 30 years. She always made everyone she came in contact with and cared for in the nursing homes feel extra special. Suellen was a very caring, giving, and hardworking lady, who always saw the beauty in nature and in everyone she met. Suellen thoroughly enjoyed playing

A complainant at 2952 W 900 N, Macy had questions about how to remove someone off her property who had been living there in a camper. She was informed of how to file an eviction against someone.

A semi and low boy trailer were parked in the road-

way on a hill at 6800 Blk N 700 E, Peru. The owner advised they would move the vehicles.

Officers responded to the area of 3311 S St. Rd. 19, Smithfield, Peru to a two-vehicle minor property damage crash in the area’s parking lot. Driver 2 (The complainant) advised that she was traveling south in the parking lot when

driver 1 backed out of her space and into vehicle 2. Minor damage was observed on the passenger rear of vehicle 2 and the drivers rear of vehicle 1. Neither vehicle was towed. Burglary was reported at 35052 Altus CT, Peru. No items were missing per homeowner. Officers believe that the door was blown in by wind.

Girls Varsity Swimming beats Manchester

The girls traveled to Manchester Thursday, Dec. 1. In the medley relay Loshnowsky, Heath, Laber, and Tyra followed behind Manchester placing 2nd. Collins, Schoettmer, Jones, and Winegardner placed 3rd respectively. In the 200 free Chloe Jordan placed 1st, Nevy Sebastian 2nd, and Maddie Brennan placing 3rd. Abby Heath placed 2nd in the 200 IM. Sam Jones swam an awesome IM and placed 3rd then Kyndal Collins swam it for the 1st time and placed 4th. The 50 free was very exciting with Zoie Laber earning a PR placing 2nd, Thea Tyra placing 3rd, and Laci Winegardner placing 4th. I can’t express how proud of the divers I am. They all had PR’s, Aubrey McClain placed 1st, Kathryn Rodkey placed 2nd, and Violet Shively placed 3rd. Sam Jones talked to me earlier in the week and expressed that she wanted to swim the 100 fly. She placed 2nd and secured a position in that event! Loshnowsky followed in 3rd and Shay Schoettmer placed 4th. Winegardner swam the 100 free placing 2nd with Abby Jordan following closing behind in 3rd, and Kathryn Rodkey placing 4th. There was some confusion in the 500 and I still can’t figure out what went wrong! Chloe Jordan was leading along with Thea Tyra. The counters got off in their counting and the girls were two laps short at the end of the race! Nevy Sebastian passed them and placed 1st. Chloe and Thea took off again to finish their race and

placed 2nd and 3rd. I am confident the girls would have had PR’s as they were swimming so well. The 200 free relay was good where Heath, Winegardner, Rodkey, and Chloe Jordan placed 2nd, Jones, Schoettmer, Brennan and Sebastian placed 3rd. In the 100 back Loshnowsky, Heath, and Collins placed 1,2,3. Abby Heath and Zoie Laber placed 1st and 2nd in the 100 breaststroke and Shay Schoettmer placed 4th. The last relay Loshnowsky, Tyra, Laber, and Chloe Jordan placed 1st followed by the team of Rodkey, Abby Jordan, Collins, and Sebastian placing 2nd.

The Golden Goggle went to Kyndal Collins. Kyndal started swimming the summer of 2021 for Maconaquah. She has improved so much and continues to get stronger every day. On Monday she earned four best times then earned three best times against Manchester. There is nothing she won’t do and is always ready to get in and get to work at practice. I am proud of the swimmer she is becoming and can’t wait to see the improvement by the end of this season.

The Lady Braves came away with a 5135 win over Eastern to keep the “Cookie Cup.” With the score tied at halftime 25-25, the Lady Braves came out and outscored the Lady Comets 16-2 in the frame.

The Lady Braves were led by Miranda Stoll with 23 points, and Bailey Carson had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. The “Cookie Cup” was started back in 2017 between the two schools to show good sportsmanship. The teams would share Christmas cookies and other types of cookies together after each game.

Going into today’s contest, Eastern held a 3-2 lead in the series. But with the win, the series is all tied up at 3-3.

The Braves went to North Miami for the TRC opener. It was a great night for the Braves to open the conference with a win.

Coach Burrus said, “I was excited to see our kids come out and play a really good game at North Miami. We had lots of assists and steals. We also put together four good quarters. Boys Varsity Swimming beats Manchester

The team traveled to Manchester last night. We had several guys in different events and several first swims. I am

very proud of the progress they are making. Jesse Santiago dropped 9 sec in the 200 IM. Luke Abbott dropped 1 sec in 50 free and swam the 100 Breaststroke for the first time. Brady Dausch improved his dive score by 28 points. He had a beautiful last dive; inward 1 and 1/2 score over 40 points.

Garrett McManus dropped .5 sec in 50 Fly, .4 in 200 IM, and 3 sec in 100 Fly.

Ryley Rodkey dropped 3.2 sec in the 200 Free. Victor Riker was probably the most nervous I have ever seen someone before he swam the 200 Free for the first time. I kept reassuring him that he would be fine. He did a great job. He also swam the 100 Backstroke for the first time and dropped 7 sec in 100 Free. Drake Samuel dropped 38 sec in the 500 free and 5 sec in 100 Free. The Golden Goggle Award goes to Cole Nye. Cole is swimming so good for this early in the season. He is at his sectional time from last year in the 100 Breaststroke. He dropped .55 sec in 50 Breast, 8 sec in 200 IM, and 3 sec in 100 Free. Next meet is Monday at Oak Hill.

Peru traveled to Rochester tonight to play the Zebras. Peru jumped out early to a big lead and cruised to a 35-12 victory. Peru was led in scoring by Landen Crowe with 11 points, Talin Douglass chipped in 8, Ryne Butt had 6, Jacob Boswell had 5, Jackson Boswell had 3, and Lucas Musser and Kouper Burks each had 1. The Tigers are now 2-0 on the season.
