Maconaquah Marching Braves take top spot at competition

By Jeff Coleman

On Saturday October 23rd the Maconaquah Marching Braves went to Franklin Central High School to compete in the ISSMA Scholastic B State Finals. There were 13 other bands that were competing for the title of ISSMA Scholastic B State Champions. The Marching Braves were the 2nd group to preform. After their performance all they could do was wait for the next 12 groups to finish their performances. While they were waiting they were brought back to the buses where the band director, Mr James Byrn gathered them together and spoke with them and congratulated them on their performance. Several of the other staff spoke as well. The common statement to the group was no matter what the outcome, be proud of what they had accomplished. After all the groups finished their performances. All of the Drum Majors from each of the schools represented were called to line up on the track in order of performance in front of the spectators. As the placement order was beginning, all the groups in the stands were on their feet. The top 5 schools were announced beginning with the 5th place group; North Harrison High School, 4th place group; Indian Creek High School, 3rd place group; Heritage Hills High

When they arrived at the school, the first person School, 2nd place group; Washington High to welcome them back, cheering and waving, was School. It was then announced, the 2021 ISSMA Superintendent Dr. James M. Callane. As they Scholastic B State Champions are the Continued. on page 6 Maconaquah Marching Braves!! As soon as the announcement was made, the Marching Braves that were in the stands began their trademark chant: “Feet Together, Stomach In, Chest Out, Shoulders Back, Elbows Frozen, Chin Up, Eyes With Pride!!”. There were tears of joy flowing from the students, staff and parents alike. After all the groups were off the field. The Marching Braves were allowed to go back on to the field for photos and celebration. Before for they left the field for the final time they circled up with the 11 seniors in the middle and the rest of the group surrounding them. They once again, with the seniors leading, gave their trademark “Eyes With Pride” chant. The group then returned to the buses to get ready for their joyful ride home. When the buses got close to Bunker Hill. The Pipe Creek Fire Department met them on US 31 and escorted them back to the school going through Bunker Hill with lights and sirens blaring. The buses, trucks and fan cars followed sounding their horns all the way to the school. THE PAPER

Obituary Kenneth Ferron Crook, 67 Kenneth Ferron Crook, 67 of Peru, Indiana, born Jan. 18, 1954, went home to be with his mom, dad, brother and sister Friday, Oct. 15, 2021. Oh, what celebration that must have been. He was a wonderful son, brother, father, uncle, and PaPaw with the biggest heart of gold. Ken didn't know a stranger and if you spoke to him even just for a minute, well my friend, you would gain a friend for life. Music was his life; he shared his gift with anyone who would listen. He shared this love with all his children and will be passed down for generations to come. When words could not be spoken music speaks. It speaks of love, sorrow, and of the life we live. It's a way to connect, to understand and where words fail, music speaks. It was Ken's way of bringing out the song in you. Ken has left behind a loving family legacy beginning with his children, Bryan & Rita Crook, (Indiana), Marcus Crook, (Utah), Brad & Tiffany Johnson, (Utah), Kyle & Rachel Crook (Virginia), and Annie & Bobbie (Lee) Crook (Utah) & his nine special Grandchildren, Lexi, Allyson, Shailey, Trinity, Dallas, Wyatt, Bryllie, Sawyer and Joelynn. Also surviving is his eldest brother, Dennis & Linda Crook (Indiana). Arrangements were made by the family for a public viewing at Flowers– Leedy Funeral Home Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021, at 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. A celebration of Kenny’s life will be announced at a later time. Dad was a remarkable, fun loving, faithful and a God-fearing man and will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his parents Ferron T. & Bonita Ruby Crook, brother Joel Todd Crook (Jed) and sister Annette Sue Chris. One thing... that most of us have heard countless times, that we know our dad would love to share is one last WHISTLE BLOW...Ken had such a love for trains, and he would yell anytime, anywhere, even in the middle of the night. If there was a train whistle blowing, he would either ask for “reverence” or yell “Blow that Wild Beast." So, every time you hear a train whistle blowing you will always remember Ken. Life is like a train ride; some people will sit next to you and talk to you. Some will just stand around...oblivious to your existence. But Ken would have let you miss that train while you're having a great conversation and who knows when the next train would come and if you're lucky enough, there will be someone like Kenny to sit and talk to you throughout your life's journey. As Ken would say "we will flap jaws afterwhile." Arrangements have been entrusted to Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home. Family and friends may sign the online guestbook at www.FlowersLeedyAllen.com.
