Two Miami County wrestlers were crowned semistate champions Saturday, Feb. 12, and advanced to this weekend’s State Finals in Indianapolis with hopes of winning state titles. Peru sophomore Jalen May (106 pounds) and Maconaquah’s Logan Farnell (160), won their respective weight class championships at the New Haven Semi-State Saturday, leading both of their teams to strong finishes. Peru finished 12th overall as a team while Maconaquah finished 15th, and North Miami placed 46th. May (35-3) started his day with a 5-0 win over Quentin Keen from Winchester, then pinned DeKalb’s Drew Waldon in 1:47 to earn a spot at State. He pinned Bluffton’s Levi Johns in 1:16 in the semifinals, and clinched the championship with a pin over Ayen Bollinger from Delta in 4:45. Farnell (44-1) started the day with a 15-0 technical fall over Ke Von Russell from Leo and qualified for State with a pin of Caden Funk in 1:53. He scored another pin in the See Wrestlers, Page 2

Brent Arthur Tobin If you’re about to throw something out, then you’d better think twice. For goodness sake “Don’t throw it away!” Those were the infamous words that the Tobin family got all to use to hearing from Brent Arthur Tobin who entered eternal life Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2022. Brent always had an idea for how to repurpose old knickknacks – which to him were treasures. You may have heard the old saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Well, Brent was that “other man” in the Tobin house. Although this drove his surviving wife, Susan Tobin, crazy, it taught the family many valuable lessons. Brent’s “never give up” mentality extended far past old tools and electronics – it’s the reason Brent was such a loving foster parent for over ten years. He never gave up on any child that was in his care. To him, every child was a blessing with immense worth. On Sundays, Brent’s kids always knew that he was the one to pester for mints and dollar bills for the coffee bar at church. He was a devout Christian, despite the fact that you could usually catch him nodding off during the sermon – or “praying” as he’d laugh and say. It wasn’t his fault though – Brent worked hard to provide a wonderful life for his family. He graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion with a Master’s degree in Business, as well as a degree in Electronic Engineering Technology from ITTech in Indianapolis.

Upon graduating, Brent worked as an Electronics Engineer, Electronics Lab Manager, and as an Electronics Technician for GM/Delphi/Delco for thirty-one years. He was an expert in his field of radio transmission, test & validation of electronics equipment, and in the anechoic chamber where he loved to work. Brent adopted not one, not two, but five kids! He is survived by his sons Matt A. Tobin (36), Darrell Tobin (19) (Hailey Watson), Dakota Tobin (16); Allen Tobin (13), Aiden Tobin (12), his daughters Vanessa Hart (28) (Kyle Hart) and Desirae Tobin (18); and his first grandchild, Jesse Hart (11 months), who was the joy of his last months. Brent was welcomed into Heaven by his adored daughter Harmony Tobin who he was surely overcome with joy to see again. If you knew Brent, then you knew that sarcasm was his strong suit. Because of this, he wanted to be cremated and put into a granite bench with the saying “have a seat on me” engraved on it. In lieu of flowers, donations for this bench or other monetary gifts for the family’s benefit can be sent through the donations link on his obituary page at www.mcclainfh.com. As per Brent’s wishes, there will be a celebration of life at Main Occasions 113 E Main St, Greentown, Indiana, Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. We will gather for light snacks, the sharing of memories, and of course some fun sarcasm. Please share a message of condolence with the family online or join them for the celebration of Brent’s life. McClain Funeral Home, Denver, Indiana, has been entrusted with arrangements.

Debra Kay Rose, 64 Debra Kay Rose, 64, of Peru passed away at 4:45 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, at Lutheran Hospital in Ft. Wayne. Born Dec. 20, 1957, in Kokomo, she was the daughter of Henry (Bud) and Elizabeth (Liz) Crabtree Ballew. She married the love of her life Andrew Rose, Sr., Dec. 22, 1975, and he survives. She worked outside the home most of her life, however the last 10 years she was able to be a homemaker. Debra enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles and spending time with family. Survivors include her husband, An-

drew Rose, Sr. of Peru, son, Andrew Rose, Jr. (Stephanie) of Peru, her father, Henry Ballew (Betty) of Kokomo, a brother, Steve Ballew of Branson, Missouri, a Very Special Friend, Rhonda Ballew of Kokomo, grandchildren, Andrew Rose III, Bailey Rose, Jakob Rose, Brittni Wyatt and Jordan Wyatt and great grandchildren, Ellis Rose, Oceane Rose, and Braden Wyatt. A Memorial visitation was held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, Feb. 14, 2022, at Riverview Funeral Home, 421 W. Canal St., Peru. Debra’s online guestbook is available, and condolences can be shared with the family at www.riverviewfhperu.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Riverview Funeral Home, 421 W. Canal St., Peru.

Sports Lady Warriors win game one, lose to Lafayette Central By Eric Christiansen The North Miami girls basketball team was one of the final eight teams standing in the IHSAA Class 1A tournament with a regional championship game appearance Saturday, Feb. 12 at the WesDel Regional. The Lady Warriors defeated Cowan in the opening round of regional with a 58-47 win to advance to the championship game where they lost to Lafayette Catholic Central 4933. First round North Miami trailed Cowan 3-0 early in the regional semifinals but answered with seven straight points with a basket from Kaiden Hanley, two free throws from Logan Mouser, and a 3-pointer from Ellie Musselman to give the Lady Warriors a 7-3 lead. Cowan regained the lead to start the second quarter at 15-13 after a 3pointer, and the teams battled backand-forth with neither team leading by more than one point with eight lead changes, with North Miami taking a 22-21 halftime lead. The lead continued to flip-flow through the third

FFA Dairy Team bound for Europe

February 16, 2022

Tigers topple Squires By Eric Christiansen

In the photo, left t right are Alaina Weaver, Audrey Piel, Jordan Weaver, Calvin Wildermuth, Coaches - Chris & Glen Jones The North Miami FFA dairy judging team has been invited to compete in an international dairy judging contest to be held at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, Scotland, this summer. The team has had an incredibly successful year as they proceeded through a tournament-like series of competitions. They won their area contest in April held on the Herrold dairy farm near Grass Creek. Next it was on to the state event in June held in LaPorte in conjunction with the state Holstein and Jersey shows. They again prevailed winning both the overall top placing as well as earning top team honors in oral reasons. In that event both Jordan Weaver and Audrey Piel were among the top ten individually. This win qualified the team to compete at the national FFA convention held in October. The team used the intervening four months to prepare for that event which is quite different than the area and state contests. In the national contest, in addition to placing classes of four animals and giving oral reasons to defend their placings, the students take an extremely difficult dairy management exam where their knowledge of the dairy industry including such topics as breeding, genetics, nutrition, health, dairy products, and marketing are tested. These many practices paid off as Audrey was high individual on the management test and three of the four team members were among the gold (top third) group individually in the national contest. The top three teams at this contest along with the top three 4-H teams from the Madi-

son contest are invited to the international contest and twoweek dairy tour through Scotland, Ireland, and England. The North Miami team will join the top FFA team from Illinois and the second-place team from Iowa along with the three 4-H teams on their trip. When asked what they were looking forward to most their answers included, “Seeing different farming methods, the Royal Highland Show, seeing new things and meeting new people, making memories with my teammates, and seeing what an ideal cow looks like in Europe.” When asked why they were so successful, their answers included, “We share a passion for the dairy industry, we set high goals and worked hard, we have amazing coaches who insisted on practice, practice, and more practice.” Although we have been extended this great opportunity, the invitation did not come with a check attached. Why should you consider helping us raise the money needed to turn this opportunity into reality? We feel that this is an opportunity of a lifetime and greatly appreciate the right to represent the United States in these international events. We will be doing all kinds of things to raise the needed funds including hosting a fish & chicken dinner, being auctioned off to work for the buyer, and taking on other jobs that may come our way, but these efforts will fall short of the $28,000 needed. You can help us to make this dream come true by sending a donation to Glen Jones at 4750 N 450 E Rochester, IN., 46975. Checks should be made payable to: North Miami Ag Advisory.

The Squires struggled with Peru’s size and three-point shooting in a 70-49 loss to the Tigers Friday night, Feb. 11. Peru hit eight 3pointers, with Matthew Ross scoring 28 of his 30 points in the first three quarters, mostly from inside, and gave Manchester trouble in the paint. Peru grabbed a 50 lead before the Squires tied it up at 7-7 with four points from Betten and a 3-pointer from Tyler McLain, but the Tigers scored the next 12 points to take a 19-7 lead early in the second quarter. Betten, Rickerd, and McLain all hit 3-pointers in a 2minute span, followed by two free throws from Betten to cut the lead to 21-18. Peru maintained a 30-25 lead with 1:30 left in the half then extended it to 38-27 at halftime. Ross took over in the third quarter, scoring 10 points in the first four minutes to give the Tigers a 46-34 lead. Manchester cut the lead to 46-39 with two free throws from Hendrix and a 3-pointer from McLain. Peru switched to a 2-3 zone defense and held Manchester to one point in the final 3:32 of the third quarter and put the game away
