athletes who shine on sidelines Peru High School hosts banquet for squad

They are the ones on the sidelines cheering for the team. They memorize cheers, chants and perform stunts. Handsprings and back tucks are a way to show support for those hustling on the field or the court. They work with the band and cheer block to create an atmosphere of excitement and support for their Tiger teams. They are the athletes who shine on the sidelines.

An awards banquet was held to honor the Peru High School Cheerleaders, Saturday, April 9.

Those in attendance were the Peru High School Cheerleading team, parents/grandparents, siblings, Coach Becky Ulery, and Coach Autumn Nero.

Several awards were presented to members of the cheerleading team at the banquet for various accomplishments.

Junior Varsity pins were awarded to: Mackenzie John, Melissa Culzac, Sophia Rygiec, Miguel Sebastian, Kenzie Wilkinson, Audrey Turner, and Rilei Boggs.

Varsity chevrons were presented to: Molly Makowski, Clair Prior, Madi Nero, Addy Pegg, Cadence Korba, Logan White, Jordyn Ulery, Eve Uttinger, Aria Korba and Makayla Dominique.

The Junior Varsity Team Captain Star pin was presented to Sophomore, Melissa Culzac.

Coach Ulery said, “Not only the leader for her squad, on more times than I can count, Melissa jumped in to help out Varsity during practices, stepping in for someone who was absent. She also dressed for Varsity on a few occasions to fill

Coach Ulery emphasized to the ladies how much their education was in addition to being a cheerleader for their school.

and fun things during these years, but THE most important is school.’ So, in my mind, these are the best awards I can give.”

Academic Excellence plaques (Top 15% class rank and 3.8 GPA) went to Senior, Molly Makowski and Sophomore Eve Uttinger.

Dukes Memorial Hospital severely short of volunteers COVID-19 continues to affect hospital volunteers around the country and Dukes Memorial Hospital is on that list.

The Dukes Hospital Auxiliary is looking for volunteers

who are available to assist patrons during a hospital visit.

The Auxiliary has positions open to assist with registration, information/surgery, hospital messengers, and in the

gift shop. Those interested must be at least 18 years old and willing to work an average of four hours per month. New volunteers must have a background check and be willing to

attend a short training session.

At this time, it is a requirement to be fully vaccinated for Covid19.

Jeri Monroe, Corresponding Secretary for Dukes Auxiliary, summed up the

Obituary Lee Michael Reed 42, Peru, Indiana, passed away at 2:35 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 26, 1979, in Kokomo, Indiana, the son of Ronald L. Reed and Sally (Taskey) Reed.

He had been a selfemployed painter for many years and spent the last few years as a caregiver to his father.

In his spare time, he was an avid fisherman, enjoyed mushroom hunting, camping and anything related to the great outdoors.

Sports Sports shorts Lady Braves Softball takes tough hit

By Jesse Carson The Lady Braves fell to Eastern on a damp evening.

The game was a pitcher’s duel. Between both teams there was only one earned run allowed.

Starting on the mound for the Braves was Freshman Blayklee Buman in her high school debut.

Buman threw a great game striking out 12 batters, allowing only five hits, and only one earned run.

However, on offense the Braves left their bats at home.

Amaya Rader was the only Mac player to reach the bases.

Once by an infield single and once by being a hit by a pitch. No other player reached the base paths and the team totaled 18 strikeouts at the hands of Eastern’ s Macy Coan.

The final score: Maconaquah 0, Eastern 5.

Mac Varsity Baseball falls to Blackford

Collins, Trace Armstrong, Bennett Isenburg, and Brandon Smitley led the way with three hits apiece. Tyler Stapleton added two hits as well.

Mac Boys Varsity Track kicks off season

By Carrie Kelly The boys track team hosted the Oak Hill Golden Eagles in the first meet of the season. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, the Braves performed very well.

Unfortunately, the Eagles outscored the Braves for the win. Several boys

contributed to the team and many personal records were set.

Top Scorers for the Braves: Cory Bockover First place in Pole Vault with a height of 11 .

Josiah Ball - First place in the 100 with a time of 11.5 and first in the 200 with a time of 23.25 both a Personal record.

AJ Kelly – First place in the 400 with a time of 52.28 and a personal record and Second place in high jump with a height of 5’6 .

The 4×100 team of Bauer Maple, Aiden Overman, AJ Kelly, Josiah Ball placed First with a time of 45.45.

Kyler Hanson placed Second in the Pole Vault with a height of 10’6 .

Jacob Sayger placed Second in the Discus with a throw of 107.1 .

Aiden Overman placed second in the 100 with a time of 11.84 and second in the 200 with a time of 24.97.

The 4x 400 team of Bauer Maple, Brady Dausch, Aiden Overman, and AJ Kelly placed Second with a time of 3:54.09.

DJ Elliot placed Third in the long jump with a jump of 16’10”.

Brady Dausch placed Third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 20.53 and also Third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.6.

Bauer Maple placed Third in the 400 with a time of 55.69.

Isaiah Whittenberg placed Third in the 1600 with a time of 5:00.24 and also the 3200 with a time of 11:06.

By Madison Brimbury On April 5, the Peru Tigers defeated the Taylor Titans 12-2 in 5 innings to improve their record to 1-1 on the season. Sophomore Ian Potts had the complete game victory, striking out nine with one BB and no earned runs.

Sophomore Fox Huppenthal caught a great game behind the plate.

Yoars family presented Sesquicentennial Award

Yoars Family of Miami County The Yoars family of Miami County recently received a Sesquicentennial Award at the Hoosier Homestead Awards ceremony held at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis. Since the program's inception in 1976, nearly 6,000 families have received the Hoosier Homestead Award. Many past awardees can be identified by the sign proudly displayed in front of the family farm or field. Indiana State Department of Agriculture Director, Bruce Kettler, presented

69 families in Indiana an award for their contribution to the farming industry.

“It is hard to put into words the value these farming families have provided to their communities, our state and the Indiana agricultural industry since the formation of their farms,” Kettler said. “It is my utmost pleasure to honor these longstanding families for their dedication to providing the feed, food and fuel necessary to sustain our state.”

Due to extreme high winds in the area, there was a total of loss of one garage, two RV's and heavy damage to a second garage. Pipe Creek Fire is in charge of this incident.

Damage to a building from possible attempted entry at 302 N Duke St, Advanced Internal Medicine, Peru. A case report was completed.

A report was taken for possible battery at 275 W Twelfth St, Dukes Hospital, Peru.

A suspicious package or item was reported at 1004 E St. Rd. 124, Peru. This was handled by Peru police Department soon after.

Officers assisted Peru Police Depart-

ment at 320 E Main St, Peru with an unwanted guest.

Officers took a report at 1939 George Ave, Peru in reference to possible cash theft.

Shooting was reported at 10374 S 1050 E, Amboy. John Rogers Jr. was incarcerated at the Miami County Jail for Domestic Battery, Possession of Meth, Residential Entry, and Criminal Mischief.

April 4 An unwanted guest was reported at 411 N Grant St., Mt. Hope Cemetery Chapel, Peru. The subjects had an unwanted guest at their father's funeral service. Unwanted party had left prior to officer arrival.

Many 911 hang-ups were reported at 171 E. Third St, Walnut Hill Mobile Home Park, Unknown Lot, Bunker Hill. Dispatch advised the hang-ups stopped before officer arrival. Dispatch stated they were from

a general area around Bunker Hill.

Officers spoke with a complainant and participant at 5686 E 375 S, Woody’s Spillway Camp and Bait, North Lot, Peru regarding a civil issue.

All parties were issued a disorderly contact warning and advised to pursue this issue in the courts.

A female was “no trespassed” from a residence at 2308 Randolph St, Peru, after moving out her belongings.

Officers responded to a two-vehicle traffic accident at S U.S. 31 and W St. Rd. 18, Kokomo. Juvenile made a complaint of pain. Juvenile was checked by first responders and was in custody of grandparents. Juvenile was not transported for injuries. Minor property damage to vehicle two. Neither vehicle was towed.

April 5 A report of a small child being outside of

the residence unsupervised was taken at 3499 W St. Rd. 218, Brookside Estates Mobile Home Park, Lot 25, Peru. Mother was located inside and was unaware that her toddler had wandered outside. Department of child services was contacted for follow up.

A complainant at 3358 S 50 W, Peru received a suspicious phone call from an out of state number about her dogs two weeks prior to contacting authorities.

She stated she was out of town at the time and had her son go to the house to check on the dogs.

Two of the three dogs were located, but her 14-year-old blind and deaf border collie was missing. She has not seen the dog since.

The complainant stated she tried to call the number back, but she continuously received no answer. It is unknown who the caller was. An officer attempted to call the

number but got no answer.

An unconscious person was reported at 3306 S 400 E, Peru.

Domestic disturbance was reported at 1127 Barksdale Ave, Peru. Parties left prior to officer arrival.

A traffic accident with injuries was reported at S 250 W and W Logansport Rd., Peru. The accident was handled by Indiana State Police.

Deputies responded to a call of threatening at 1486 Matador St, Vohne Licke Kennels Dorms Bld. 329, Room 3213, Peru. Female half was issued no trespass warning and left the property.

Multiple 911 calls were taken at a residence at 7611 N 300 W, Denver. Officers made contact with the juvenile who supposedly made the calls, but there was no emergency. The calls came from a different cell number.

A caller at 41026 Gunter Court, Peru had questions regarding trash cans being removed by the collection company.

Distracted driving was caught by officers at 14 E Eighth St, Harvey Hinklemeyer’s, Peru. A warning was given.

A traffic accident with damage was reported at E Wabash Rd. and N 300 E, Peru.

This was dispatched in the wrong county.

A wanted person was reported at 1639 Warhawk Rd, Peru.

Deputies located the suspect’s vehicle and arrested Scott Hoover

on a warrant out of Howard County.

A vehicle was stopped for speeding at S U.S. 31 and W Broadway St, Bunker Hill. It was discovered the passenger had active warrants for his arrest. A search of the vehicle after a canine alert resulted in the discovery of suspected narcotics and paraphernalia.

Dustin Rutherford was arrest for possession of the items found.

Officers spoke with a subject at 2084 S Strawtown Pike, Peru regarding disorderly conduct. Subject was issued a disorderly conduct warning for the evening.

A verbal warning for failure to dim headlights was given at 310 N Broadway, Drapers Auto Sales, Peru. This turned into a property damage hit and skip.
