Peru Circus attendance surpassing 2019 sales The Peru Amateur Circus will be performing their seventh show this evening and while the performers are impressing the audiences, the size of the crowds have been impressive to circus officials.

Coming off of the COVID-19 pandemic and missing out on performances in 2020, the Circus Board of Directors were unsure how people would respond to seeing a live show in 2021.

Much to their surprise, tickets sales are expected to exceed tickets sold in 2019.

Stacy Makowski, Vice President of ticket sales for Circus City Festival, Inc., says ticket sales “are going very well.”

Makowski said, “Wednesday is Teacher Appreciation Night and Thursday is Police, Fire, Healthcare and First Responders night. Each will receive $2 off per ticket if they call the ticket office for tickets.”

Looking toward the rest of the week, Makowski said the Saturday 2 p.m. show “will probably sell out ad the 7 p.m. show has plenty of tickets left.”

Man arrested after car chase, stand-off in Miami County home Indiana State Police - Rural Miami County On July 13 at approximately at 3:35 p.m., a nearly two-and-a-halfhour standoff ended when officers from the Indiana State Police Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) arrested Jason Fites, 45, rural Macy, IN. Fites is incarcerated in the Miami County Jail to face criminal charges for resisting law enforcement, criminal recklessness with a firearm, possession of heroin, possession of methamphetamine, dealing heroin, dealing methamphetamine, pointing a loaded firearm, violent felon in possession of a handgun, and possession of a syringe. He also had a warrant for his arrest from Tippecanoe County for a parole violation.

Officers from the Cass County Drug Task Force were conducting surveillance at a hotel in Peru, Indiana, searching for Fites. He was wanted on a Tippecanoe County, Indiana, arrest warrant for violation of his parole on a class A felony charge from 2012. Officers observed Fites leave the hotel in his GMC Sierra pickup truck. They requested assistance from the Indiana State Police to stop the truck.

At approximately x 12:45 p.m., Indiana State Police Trooper Jon Cole initiated a traffic stop on Fites east of U.S. 31 on Miami County Road 400 North. Fites initially stopped, but then led officers on an approximately 15-minute pursuit. The chase ended when Fites stopped the truck, on Miami County Road 1100 North, and ran into his residence at 1311 East. During that pursuit, Fites allegedly fired a gunshot on State Road 19 near Miami County Road 700 North. The shot was allegedly fired when Fites was driving by a Miami County Sheriff ’s Officer who was placing stop sticks in the road. The officer was not injured.

Fites refused to come outside of the home.

His elderly father and a female caretaker were also inside the residence. Both father and caretaker were eventually able to exit the residence and were taken to a safe place by police officers. Indiana State Police negotiators were able to make contact,

via cell phone, with Fites inside the home.

After approximately two and a half hours of negotiation, Fites still refused to exit the home. Fites finally surrendered as officers from the Indiana State Police SWAT were beaching the front door to his residence. He was taken into custody without further incident.

During a subsequent search of Fites’ home and truck, officers allegedly found methamphetamine, heroin, a syringe, three handguns, ammunition, and $5.800 in Untied States currency.

Fites is incarcerated in the Miami County Jail. He faces 17 criminal charges. His bond in Miami County has been set at $750,000. He does have an active arrest warrant from Tippecanoe County.

The Miami County Prosecutor’s Office added additional charges to include attempted murder, dealing cocaine, and two additional charges of a serious violent felon in possession of a handgun.

During the investigation, officers allegedly located cocaine that Fites purportedly threw out of his truck’s window when he was being pursued by officers.

Count 7: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, a Level 4 Felony.

Count 8: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, a Level 4 Felony.

Count 9: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, a Level 4 Felony.

Count 10: Possession of Cocaine, a Level 5 Felony.

Count 11: Criminal

Recklessness, a Level 6 Felony.

Count 12: Resisting Law Enforcement, a Level 6 Felony.

Count 13: Pointing a Firearm, a Level 6 Felony.

Count 14: Unlawful Possession of Syringe, a Level 6 Felony.

Count 15: Theft of a Firearm, a Level 6 Felony.

Count 16: Resisting Law Enforcement, a Class A Misdemeanor.

Count 17: Reckless Driving, a Class C Misdemeanor.

The Indiana State Police was assisted by the Miami County Sheriff ’s Office, the Peru Police Department, and the Miami County Prosecutor’s Office.

All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Obituaries Michael Edward Ramos, 65 Michael Edward Ramos, 65 of Lafayette, Indiana, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2021, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, after a battle with vascular dementia disease.

Mike was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, March 21, 1956. His parents were Abel “Ray” and Shirley Anne Patricia (Bullard) Ramos.

Mike never married.

He lived and worked in Lafayette, Indiana for the past 20 years. Mike spent his teenage years in the Peru area, graduating from Maconaquah High School in 1974. Mike lived in Peru and then Kokomo, Indiana, before making his home in Lafayette.

Mike had an avid interest in music and amassed a significant collection of music and music memorabilia over the years.

Mike lived in England and Germany as a child and enjoyed traveling back to England to visit relatives on his mother’s side of the family. Family was very important to Mike.

Mike is preceded in death by his father Abel (“Ray”), youngest brother Randy and grand-nephew Austin.

The memories of his life will be cherished by his mother Shirley, brother David, and sisters in law Sue Ramos and Terri Ramos. Mike leaves no children of his own to mourn his passing but is remembered by nephews and nieces Jamie Ramos, Jerid Ramos, Jonathan Ramos, Erin Luttrell, and April Kennedy.

Funeral services were at the Chapel of Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru, Indiana, Friday July 16, at 11 a.m., where David Ramos conducted the

service. Sue Ramos sang “Through It All,” a favorite of Mike’s. Internment was at Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru, where Mike was laid to rest immediately following the service. A short prayer and devotion were offered at Mike’s final resting place.

Born Oct. 17, 1931, in Logansport, Indiana, he was the son of Dee Devon Biggs and Fern J. (Patchett) Biggs. On Aug. 28, 1959, in Peru, Indiana, he was married to Roberta L. Dickerhoff, and she survives.

The cost will be $15 per vehicle paid at the gate the day of the show. Gates will open at 9 a.m. for general public with $5 admission for 12 and older and 11 and under being free. See hundreds of classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Enjoy food, DJ, 50/50 drawing, and airplanes. The indoor exhibits and gift shop will be open as well.

At 10 a.m. the gates will close for vehicle registration. The first 250 vehicles will receive a free dash plaque and there will be awards for the top 75 vehicles and special awards. This year there will be five classes which are: pre-1954, 1954-1979, 1980-1999, 2000 and newer, and a motorcycle class! Parking

under the planes is a first come first serve basis so come out early to park under the plane of your choice! All proceeds go to the Grissom Air Museum to help preserve the planes.

Curt was born Nov. 26, 1932, in Huntingburg, Indiana, to Victor and Dorothy Bohnenkamper.

Attending Huntingburg High School, Curt excelled in basketball and baseball earning many recognitions throughout his career. His love for baseball landed him an offer to play college ball in Texas, but upon arriving in Texas, found the homesick feeling was just too much and hitchhiked back to Indiana.

Curt eventually joined the Air Force and proudly served while earning the opportunity to play on their top-level traveling baseball team.

Curt married Constance “Connie” Schnell on August 31, 1958, and they were happily married until her passing in 1998. They originally set their roots in Indianapolis, Indiana, where Curt began his career with Meridian Mutual Insurance as a claims adjuster.

He was transferred to Peru, Indiana, in 1975 as branch manager. He retired after 37 years of service and remained very active in the com-

munity with his family and friends.

Curt was a lifelong fan of St. Louis Cardinals baseball as well as an avid IU basketball and Indiana Pacer fan. He played slow-pitch softball well into his early 60s, often playing with teammates half his age and being known as “Curt & The Kids.” He also enjoyed knocking that little white ball around golf courses.

Happily, in his retirement he took a position at Rock Hollow Golf Club where he was a “stickler for the rules” starter, keeping players in line. He enjoyed that position for many years.

In recent years he was rarely seen without his faithful companion, his dog Finley.

Curt will be greatly missed by his children,

Kyle (Jenny) Bohnenkamper of Warsaw, Karen (Kenny) Edwards of Lafayette, Kay Ann (Pat) Ulery of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren, Sam, Jack, Emma, Zoe, Noah, Avery, Addison; and sister Shirley Hart.

He was preceded in death by his wife Connie, parents Victor Bohnenkamper and Dorothy White, brothers Roy and Victor Jr., and sisters Joyce Knust and Barbra Gail Pries.

There was a small graveside service held Saturday, July 17, 2021, at 11 am at Mount Hope Cemetery in Peru, Indiana. Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Aug. 22, 2021, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Rock Hollow Golf Club, 669 S 250 W, Peru, Indiana. Feel free to wear his favorite team color (St. Louis red/white or IU crimson/cream) in his honor.

Anna Belle Annie Gallahan, 101

Anna Belle “Annie” Gallahan, 101, of Peru passed away at 12:03 a.m., Friday, July 16, 2021, at Dukes Memorial Hospital. She was born in Peru on July 7, 1920, the daughter of Bert and Laura Belle Barrows Mattox. She married Harold W. Gallahan Nov. 22, 1952. and cherished her time with him until his passing on April 1, 1992.

Annie graduated from Peru High School in 1938 and was a member of the Oakdale Baptist Church. She owned and operated B & K Drive-In in Syracuse from 19541983 where she helped mentor many of the kids who worked there.

She then began working at South Shore Golf Course in Syracuse Pro Shop until 2009. Annie loved golfing and adored her time spent working in the Pro Shop where she earned the nickname “Topgun.” She

also enjoyed bowling and was active in multiple leagues. When Annie was not busy playing sports, she enjoyed playing the organ and piano and especially loved playing gigs with other musicians.

Duane Curtis Bean, 52 Duane Curtis Bean, 52, Rochester, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2021, at his residence.

Born Sept. 16, 1968, in Lincoln, Nebraska, he was the son of Raymond Bean and Themla Louise Hackbarth Bean.

He is the brother of Stacey (Shawn) Dyson, Grand Rapids; and Michael (Amber) Bean, Peru.

He married Loretta Grace Johnson on January 17, 1987, in Mexico, Indiana, and together had two children, Jacqueline N. G. Bean and Austin Curtis Bean. He was then married to Dusty LaDawn Arwood Bean on February 22, 2020.

Duane worked at Chrysler for seven years, then found his love for truck driving and began driving over the road. He could drive any route without even needing a map.

A report of a verbal domestic disturbance was taken at 2051 W Matador St, Country Cottage Apartments, Apt. 10, Peru. Parties agreed to remain separated for the evening.

A domestic disturbance report was taken at 2934 S 300 W, Woodland Hills Mobile Home Park, Lot 222, Peru. This was an unfounded report.

A juvenile was found on a roof at 43022 Keesler CT, Peru. Parents were spoken to about the issue.

A possible heart attack was reported at W 1500 N and N U.S. 31, Macy.

A civil issue was reported at Bunker Hill.

Juveniles were reported to be pointing BB guns and threatening to harm an individual at 2930 Travis St, Peru. A report was taken.

A wanted person was reported at 2601 W 500 S, Peru. Officers were unable to locate the subject with a warrant.
