She represented Wabash County in Indiana’s Second Congressional District. Also killed were Walorski’s communications director, Emma Thomson, and Zachery Potts, her district director, and Edith Schmucker, 56, Napanee, the driver of the other vehicle. “I was shocked and heart broken when I received the news today about the tragic death of Congresswoman Jackie Walorski,” Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch said. “Jackie and I served togeth er in the Indiana House of Representatives, and she was a fighter for her con stituents and conservative Hoosier values. My heart goes out to her husband, Dean, and the rest of her family and friends. She will be deeply missed.” Indiana Sen. Todd Young said, “I’m truly dev astated. Jackie loved Hoosiers and devoted her life to fighting for them. I’ll never forget her spir it, her positive attitude, and most importantly her friendship. Please join me in praying for their families in this difficult time.”Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita said, “Jackie Walorski was a woman who stood strong in her values, cared for her family, and served Hoosiers well. Our sympathies also go out to the fami lies of Zach Potts and Emma Thomson who died in the same tragic accident. Hoosiers across the state mourn the loss of these public servants.”

Charles graduated from Walkerton High School in 1947 with plans to attend Indiana Barber College. A quick detour to Ball State University led to a degree in Social Studies and Business Education in 1951. From there he served two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis. Upon discharge from the Army, Charles entered the School of Law at Indiana University in Bloomington where he was Editor of the Indiana Law Review and salutatorian of his graduating class. While working on the Law Review, he met the love of his life Julie Godo. They married on Oct. 6, 1956, and settled in Indianapolis where he worked in the Legal Department at Bell Telephone Company. In 1959 Charles moved to Wabash where he opened his own law firm and immediately began making an impact upon the community.Hewasinstrumental in the formation of the Metropolitan School District Wabash County. He served as school board attorney for 50 years. He was active in local politics and served as campaign manager for Mayor Robert Mitten. During Mayor Mitten’s tenure, Charles served as Wabash City Attorney. In 1962 Charles saw the need for a second bank in Wabash. On his own initiative he contacted local people for support, formed the necessary committees and boards, recruited potential stockholders and eventually, in 1963, Frances Slocum Bank opened its doors in a trailer on the corner of Cass and Market Streets. While continuing to maintain a busy law practice, Charles served for almost a year as the first President of Frances Slocum Bank. He was an active member of the Board of Directors until his retirement. In 1963, Charles was selected to receive the Wabash Jaycees Distinguished Service Award. During that year he was President of the Wabash Chamber of Commerce. One of Charles passions was his work with the Honeywell Foundation. Serving as President of the Foundation for nine years, he worked strenuously to raise money for the construction of the new Honeywell Center which is considered to be the crown jewel of the Wabash community.Charles served as attorney for the North Manchester Town Board for 40 years. Charles’ strong faith in Jesus Christ led him to serve his local church. He taught Lutheran Catechism classes at Zion Lutheran Church, opened his home (along with wife Julie) to local youth for Bible Study and was a leader in the Full Gospel Business Men’s Organization. As a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Peru, he served as Director of the Lay Ministry Board for 10 years.Charles served the youth of Wabash as Club President of the Honeywell Swim Club, was an active member of the Wabash Exchange Club, serving as President for several terms; was President of the Wabash Community Centennial Executive Committee in 1966; and he headed Wabash County committees raising funds for the Indiana University Foundation. In 2004 Charles was the recipient of the distinguished Sagamore of the Wabash award; in 2006 he was Distinguished Citizen by the Wabash County Chamber of Commerce; in 2010 then Gov. Mitch Daniels named him a Distinguished Hooiser and in 2011 was the first recipient of the Distinguished Lawyer Award from Wabash County.
Charles never sought accolades for his work. His free time was primarily spent with family first and his other loves second - the Frances Slocum Bank, the Honeywell Foundation and the myriad of other activities that are mentioned. He never entered into service for this community looking for monetary compensation or newspaper headlines. He did all these things because he saw a need, had a vision of a better way, or just plain had the desire to serve his community. He loved IU football and basketball, gardening and growing pumpkins, and baking breads, cakes and Hecookies.issurvived by four daughters, Karen (Monte) Moffett of Porter, Kathryn (Bryan) Meyers of Canoga Park, Calif., Julianne (Michael Smith) Tiede of Wabash, and Margo (Mark White) TiedeWhite of Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren, Trey Moffett of Katy, Texas, Leah Meyers of Indianapolis, Lauren (Adam) Hiatt of Pendleton, Alexandria (Gary) Nunez of Reseda, Calif., Aaron (Eleanor Wyant) Smith of Dorchester Center, Mass., Adam (Skyla Turner) Smith of Ypsilanti, Mich., Ava Smith of Wabash, Megan Tiede-White and Mattingly Tiede-White, both of Indianapolis, and Michelle Bailey; 10 greatgrandchildren; his brother Loren Tiede; and his sister Lorraine Moerman. 1/4 cup high quality bourbon 8 half-pint sterilized jars with canning lids or freezer containers* Bring a pot of water to boil then place peaches in boiling water, rolling them around, for 30 seconds, then remove and slip off their skins. Chop the peaches into 1/4-inch dice and remove pits. In a heavy bottom pot, place peaches, pectin, salt, and lemon juice and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Add sugar then bring back to a boil, stirring constantly for 7 minutes. Remove from heat then add vanilla and bourbon, stirring in well, then ladle the hot preserves into clean, hot jars, and place new seal lids on each jar and secure with threaded bands or wait until preserves are cooled and store in refrigerator or freezer instead. hour prior to filling them so they are sterile and ready to use. Recipe yields approximately 56-64 ounces of peach preserves, depending on size of the peaches.
servings per recipe: 12. God surrounds us with many precious gifts, like good friends, and peaches!
Life, if we let it, can lead us down paths we wouldn’t normally travel. What’s interesting is that when we do let it occur, it often opens our eyes (and hearts) to joys we may haveWhethermissed.it’s serendipity or perhaps kismet we may never know, but when you experience moments such as these, they stick with you for life, like the time I crossed paths with an old, ugly peach tree. Growing on a property I purchased in Colon, Michigan, my initial thought was that this tree was nothing more than an old eyesore that drew stinging insects and blocked the lake view. It had to go! However, my neighbor harbored a completely different view. “Do you know what kind of tree that is,” he called out to me one day. “An old ugly one!” I chirped back. “Well,” he said, “it may be old and ugly, but it’s a Cal Red and that’s the sweetest, juiciest peach you’ll ever taste!”Paying heed to his remarks, I decided to spare this lumbering misfit from an axe until I could taste its fruit.Right around the time peaches began to hit the ground, another new neighbor came along who also happened to have a penchant for peaches!Suppling me with her preserve recipe to test out a batch using those Cal Red peaches, I threw caution to the wind, and put my faith in the advice of these two new neighbors, whom I barely knew. I am glad that I did because the batch they created was by far the best peach preserves I had ever tasted.Thrilled with how delightful the recipe turned out, especially since it was made using something I was about to turn into firewood, I gifted jars to each of them because I without them it would have never come intoTogetherexistence.these strangers taught me that an old peach tree may be ugly, but it still had magic in its boughs. Magic that not only made marvelous jam, but also turning strangers into friends. Sadly, that old Cal Red got struck by lightning, and died the following year. Then a few short years later, I lost both neighbors, Cal, and Kathi, as well, but thanks to that old peach tree, I have sweet memories of them all that I get to savor until I meet up with them in that big peach orchard in the sky!

SECRET A FATHER used to say to his children when they were young: When you all reach the age of 12, I will tell you the secret of life. One day when the oldest turned 12, he anxiously asked his father what was the secret of life. The father replied that he was going to tell him, but that he should not reveal it to his brothers. The secret of life is this: the cow does not give milk. “What are you say ing?” asked the boy incredulously.Asyouhear it, son: The cow does not give milk, you have to milk it. You have to get up at 4 in the morning, go to the field, walk through the corral full of manure, tie the tail, hobble the legs of the cow, sit on the stool, place the bucket and do the work yourself. That is the secret of life, the cow does not give milk. That things are automat ic and free: their mentality is the if “I wish, I ask…I obtain.”“They have been accustomed to get whatever they want the easy way…But no, life is not a mat ter of wishing, ask ing and obtaining. The things that one receives are the effort of what one does. Happiness is the result of effort. Lack of effort cre ates frustration.” So, share with your children from a young age the secret of life, so they don’t grow up with the mentality that the govern ment, their par ents, or their cute little faces is going to give them every thing they need in life.
