Stanley, an alumnus of St. Bernard, also announced the school has launched a $500,000 fundraising campaign to help students with tuition, as well as improvements for the building and a new playground for the students. So far, she said, $170,000 has been raised toward the“Asgoal.we gather here tonight, it’s safe to say that we all have memories flooding back to us,” Stanley said. “Whether it is a special moment in the classroom, being scolded by a nun, celebrat ing a first Communion, or reading during Mass, our time at St. B holds a special place in our hearts.“Asstudents, we felt challenged. We felt loved and supported. And after leaving St. Bernard, it’s safe to say we were prepared for the next stage of our lives.”

Alumni, parishioners and friends of St. Bernard School gathered Saturday night to cele brate the school’s 100th anniversary. After a 5 p.m. Mass at which Bishop Kevin Rhoades spoke, a celebration took place in the church parking lot with food, dancing and other festivities.FatherEdmund Ley opened the first parochial school on Sept. 5, 1921, in the St. Bernard Hall. Sisters from the St. Joseph Convent in Tipton were selected as teachers for the 46 students who were enrolled at the school. In 1949, a structure on North Cass Street was razed and in July 1950, ground was broken for the school’s present location. It opened on Sept. 4, 1951, nearly 30 years to the day the school opened its doors. “It’s a great honor to use this night to celebrate and highlight the gift of St. Bernard’s as a school,” Father Jay Horning, St. Bernard’s pas tor said. “The one thing I’ve learned is that Catholic education and schools do not function without the support of the community. It just doesn’tHorninghappen.”introduced St. Bernard Principal Abigail Stanley and members of the Wabash Knights of Columbus Council 2957, who present ed the school a $40,000 gift. “I would like to thank the Knights for their support of St. Bernard School,” Stanley said. “We will use those funds wisely, and it’s going to help a lot of students. Thank you, thank you, thank you very much.”

Academic success has continued on at St. Bernard, she noted. “We have continued our legacy of excellent education,” Stanley said. “Our students, our current St. B stu dents, stand out in academics, as our test scores continue to be the highest in the county. We have implemented one-to-one technology, while continuing to emphasize the basics that have long contributed to our St. B “Religiousstudents.values and discipline are still the foundations we seek to instill in our students.”

Andy Celmer is among the alumni of St. “TheBernard.mainlobby of Saint Bernard school is, or at least was in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, an interesting contrast of black and a kind of olive green tiles,” he wrote about the time at the school. “It was sort of a checkerboard. Probably not a popular choice for modern day homes. But, each space served an important purpose – at least for my childhood.“Thetiles were perfectly distanced to allow children to stand on black tiles ‘arms-length apart.’ It is how we started, and ended, every day. Aside from what my parents were also teaching at home, it was where I learned a lot of proper childhood lessons.” He continued, “Honestly, I owe a lot to that tilewindowed lobby at 191 North Cass Street — a wonderful education and a foundation of faith and discipline — so many great memories of great friends and teachers.”

By Phil Smith psmith@thepaper-ofwabash.com

Officials SchoolMetropolitanatDistrict of Wabash County have been working feverishly toward a major project that would changeforeverthelook of the district, and the proponents for school.“Basically, everything’s done on averages, so it’s just basic math of averaging the tax entities that we have within in our school district,” said Keaffaber. “It’s based on the homestead averages. The legislators have changed all this language and it’s veryKeaffabernew.” said it is likely that organizations that represent educators and administrators will lobby the state legislature to have the language changed. “It’ll probably be for next year. They’re going to lobby to get it back to a place where it’s a little more understandable. It won’t help us out any.” Kuhn said the formula used by the state is accurate, if not murky when it comes to how much a given tax payer will fork over each taxBut,time.he added that the bottom line of a tax payer’s share will be much less than the ballot question seems to suggest.“Wedo believe the calculation is accurate,” Kuhn said. “However, the language in the ballot question and that percentage can be

cent,’ what are you going to vote? Most people are going to say no to that.” Kuhn added that he is willing to help anyone navigate the tax calculator to see firsthand what they will likely end up paying for the new school. He said some already have, and have been surprised.“The people who I’ve help to do theirs, it does not even come close to 124 percent.”

New WCS start time gets positive reviews

By Phil Smith psmith@thepaper-ofwabash.com

Less than a week after school began for Wabash City Schools’ 2022-23 school year, feedback was already coming in on the school corporation’s move to adjust start times for its students in a move to increase saftety.Theboard of trustees for WCS voted May 2 to alter school start times for both elementary and secondary (middle school and high school) students.Atthe Aug. 15 meeting of the Superintendentboard, Dr. Amy Sivley told the five-member panel that aside from a few minor glitches, the new times were working well and were being well received.“Wehave had four great days of school,” Sivley told the board. “I feel like the switching of start times, with the

cally NWEA, to assess gains in student learning for each and every student within our district.”According to the report to the board from Sivley, 103 students took the tests, with 74, or 72 percent passing on the first try. Sivley said this percentage was up from 62 percent the previous year. Of those who didn’t pass this year, 23 students took summer withremediation,12,or52percent of those students passing on the second try. The remediation passing percentage last year was 39 percent. With first-round and scoresremediationcombined, 83 percent of WCS students passed the test. In addition, some who did not pass the first time are given exemptions from having to re-test. Even without considering those students, WCS still bested the state average of 82 percent. WCS also reported a total pass rate of 77 percent last year.

She was born Nov. 16, 1927 to Walter and Alice (Overman) Garrison in Wabash County. She graduated from Linlawn High School in 1945 and married Frank Brandenburg on Oct. 2, 1948. They became a couple that epitomized love and devotion for more than 60 years. Together through love and hard work they built a life and a home at Walnut Creek Ranch on Old State Road 15 south moving there in 1962. They raised two children and strawberries, raspberries, melons, onions, and sweet corn that they sold to IGA stores and the community at a roadside stand. During that time, they both were active members of the Church of Christ at Treaty and led the youth group there for many years. In 1989 they retired and began a legacy of traveling to North Carolina in the winter and staying on the beach at Oak Island. She enjoyed the sunnier and warmer weather and went for long walks on the beach, collecting shells, and enjoying her favorite meal of fresh fried shrimp. She also spent time with their three grandchildren who lived in Raleigh, N.C., until those trips ended in 2007. They lived in what they considered a paradise for almost 50 years before Frank passed away after 62 years of marriage in 2011.
