The fourth project is Kentner Creek Crossing, just north of the Honeywell Golf Course.
The expo featured booths from lending institu tions, as well as one from Ideal Homes, which is the developer for the project. Legacy Heights, to be located at the former site of Wabash County Hospital, is one of three hous ing projects the city is behind, and one of four in theIncity.addition to Legacy Heights, the city is look ing to redevelop the former GDX site on Stitt Street, as well as housing units east of the Wabash County Museum on Market Street.
Long said he was pleased with the expo. He doesn’t believe any Legacy Heights lots have been sold yet. Cont. on Pg. 3
“Now, we’re struggling to have more than 50 homes on the market,” Long said. “That’s exas perated the need for new housing starts.”
“So, we have an aging housing stock in Wabash County, compared to 17 percent, the state aver age,” Gillenwater continued. “So, we know we have a lot of big, beautiful historic homes that are awesome and add to the character of the community. We also know that we have some of those that are in disrepair, and we’ve certainly worked through some of those in partnership with the city and Indiana Landmarks and others. But we also know that everyone doesn’t want to buy and old home.”

Expo gives look at Legacy Heights
Because of
Mayor Scott Long spoke briefly about the proj ects during a welcome to those at the expo. When he took office in 2016, he said, it quickly became apparent that new housing was needed in the “Howcity.do you do that when you’re surrounded by ag land,” he asked, rhetorically. “Farmers don’t want to give up any of their land for hous ing.”Ahousing study began in 2017, which provided the city with a plan for what type of housing would be needed. The study was finished in 2018 and things were progressing, he continued, but then the pandemic hit. “We didn’t stop,” he said. “We kept working the entire time on different strategies.”
Keith Gillenwater, President and CEO of Grow Wabash County, noted that a portion of the Imagine One85 project – which seeks to stem the population decline locally – is the need for new housing.Healso noted some housing statistics from around the county, including: 80 percent of the housing units in the county are single family homes and 39 percent of the housing units in Wabash County were built before 1939.
Visitors to the housing expo chat with various vendors set up at the event.
The former hospital site allows for 13.9 acres of homes, which plans call for a combination of sin gle family dwellings and villas. The city is close to asking developers for Requests for Proposals on the Market Street site. Meanwhile, the GDX site is at the federal court level.“Hopefully by this fall we’ll have an answer on getting that site cleaned up,” Long said. “We have a developer on line to develop that site with multi-family and single family. “We’re building within. The next best thing I think we can do as a city, since we can’t build out, is we take up all the land within the city and build housing there.” Back when the study was developed, he noted, there were plenty of homes on the market within the city. However, the study still pointed out the need for more.
Prospective homeowners got their first look at the Legacy Heights housing addition during a home expo Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the Wabash County Museum.

Gabi Pettit, Gary Bryant, Bill and Lois Rettig, The Ford Meter Box Company, Dorais Chevrolet and many other individuals and sponsors, were able to set up the first car show close to the Paradise Springs area of down town. The location of the show and the date were changed many times during the first several years. Finally, the third weekend of August and the Honeywell Center were set as the date and place for this special happening. This local event has drawn hundreds, maybe thousands, of people to our community and our downtown area and has raised many thousands of dollars for the AssociationDystrophyMuscular to be used for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) research and we continue to hope and pray for a break through in the cause and cure of this neurologicaldevastatingdisease. University’s Dr. Bruce Evans will mingle with festival guests in the persona of Indiana’s first forester, Charles Deam. Evans, professor of biology at HU, will roam the festival grounds for several hours each day. Deam, a Bluffton native, had his interest in botany sparked when, as a 16-year-old farm boy in Wells County, he survived the deadly typhoid fever after being given a pioneer remedy using the herb old-field balsam.Stressed out by stints as a teacher and druggist, Deam began taking walks, collecting samples of plants and flowers along the way. He studied proper methods to collect, identify, and preserve those specimens, expanding to neighboring states and countries but eventually focusing only on Indiana plants.

For more than a decade, sold-out audiences have laughed at the antics of 21st century seniors partying at Pelican Roost, where 70-something is the new 20-something, only with looser skin. The musical’s writers portray 18 characters as they romp through an active senior living complex in a show that the San Francisco Examiner called “wickedly funny.” Intended for mature audiences, most seats are $20 and $30, with two show times being offered.•
