“I went last year and I loved it,” McClure said. “I was raised along the Ohio River, so any time I get a chance to head down and see the beautiful scenes I jump at it. I’m not a hard sell forMcClurethem.” said the teachable moments for pre-teens are abundant during such an event.

“When they get here, one of the first questions I ask is ‘who’s never been on the river before?’ Rankin said. “Most of them put their hands up. The second thing is, ‘now, who’s afraid?’ About half of them will put their hands up. So, I’ll start talking to them about how much fun it is and how much safety we have in place, so they have no need to be afraid.”

According to Rankin, who aside from being SWMD’s executive director serves as vice president of the Wabash River Defenders, each stop on the rafting trip provides the students with insight on nature, conservation and habitat preservation from experts such as the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the county’s Soil and Water Conservation District, Rankin’s organization and the Army Corps of Engineers.

The students were loaded into large rubber rafts in groups of eight and one adult, with three rafts departing at a time from the launching spot in Lagro. The day finished with the group arriving at an area known as Wabashiki.“Whenthey do get to that last shoal, we all let them jump in the water and act silly for awhile, just to releasae a

The day is a high point not only for the students, but for the adult coordinators and volunteers. Retired teacher and former coach Steve McClure arrived to help with the event after having helped out last year. He said he has children teaching at schools in Northfield and Southwood.

“An old coach likes to see team work, and you better have some team work in your raft or you’re going to go crooked and hit the rapids. So, it’s a good expereicne for them, a learning

“We take every 7th-grader in the county down the river on about a three-and-a-half, four-mile rafting trip,” said Rankin on Sept. 6, the second day of the event. “Along the way, they stop on shoals and on those shoals, I have educators.”

“WeWild.Wabash River Defenders are a group that is very active with water quality,” she said. We knew that there were so many kids who have never even been near the river and this is what we’re about, the Wabash River. So, it just made sense to design an event.”

Greg was a member of Christian Fellowship Church in North Manchester. He believed that God should be kept first, things need to be prayed about, and the Bible should be read. During his health struggles, he kept a relentless spirit, and his faith remained steadfast.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 45 years, Brenda (Burkhart) Buckley, and their four children. Lansing D. Buckley, Jr. of Owingsville, Ky., Brian D. Buckley, of North Manchester, Eric L. Buckley (Kelsie Buckley) of Imperial, Neb., and Latesha L. Martin, of Newburgh. Lance was an affectionate grandfather, “Poppy” to all of his surviving grandchildren, Lansing III (Wendy LaShae Buckley), Lacey, Derek, Zach, Stephen, Dakota (Tiffany Mead Buckley), Isaac, and Peyten Buckley, and Raynah Tyler. He also had the opportunity to dote on his thriving greatgrandchildren, Isaac Martin and Synthia Buckley.

Northfield’s Class of 1970 recently held a Class of “70” turns 70 years old brunch at The Fried Egg in Wabash on Aug. 31. The idea for the brunch came about while enjoying the class’ 50th reunion; several thought it would be a great excuse for another get together. Tje classmates rarely pass up a chance to mingle & this was no exception as 28 classmates and six guests enjoyed the time gathering.CookDebbieCornMcGuire,CindywintermatesbeforeearlylateinggirlsRumortogether.hasittheareconsider-anotheroneforOctoberorNovembertheclass-headtotheirhouses.SwanBeckyBowman,andHoppesplannedthe
