JOIN THE
PICKLERS
LEARN ABOUT THE NEWEST SPORTS TREND SWEEPING THE NATION AND KOSCIUSKO COUNTY.
O"nce they taught me the game, I instantly became obsessed and was always looking for more opportunities to play,” said Grace St. Clair, a local pickleball player and also Lead Education Coordinator for Lilly Center for Lakes & Streams.
For many, what started as a whim is now their new favorite hobby. Pickleball has exploded in popularity over the last couple of years and has become one of the most popular sports in America. Interested in trying out the sport yourself? It’s easy to learn!
“I enjoy pickleball because it's easy for almost anyone to pick up. Pickleball requires some basic hand-eye coordination, but otherwise you can play as calmly or as intensely as you like. It is also fun to meet new peoplewhich you can do easily each time you change partners,” explained Rucel Martinez, another local pickleball player and Assistant Director of Marketing at the Lilly Center for Lakes & Streams.
St. Clair was introduced to pickleball by a couple from her church who were looking for new people to teach and play with. Rusty and a couple of friends heard about the sport and decided to try it out.
“It was a total whim! A couple of friends and I split the cost of some cheap Amazon paddles and started playing. We heard it was an up-and-coming sport and thought it would be a good way to get some exercise.”
Both pickleball players described the physical benefits of pickleball, including staying more active, increased stamina, and the ability to stay active during the winter at the indoor pickleball courts. However, both emphasized the social benefits pickleball provides.
“I can’t even count how many people I have met through pickleball. There have been so many people that I have become friends with that I otherwise would have never met living in Warsaw,” concluded St. Clair.

BMXLAUNCHED AT HIRE PARK

Thrill seekers have a new place to charge up in Warsaw, where a BMX park opened at Warsaw’s Hire Park in May.
BMX, shorthand for bicycle moto cross, is a sport in which participants ride bicycles specialized for performance on dirt tracks built with features such as rollers, jumps and banked curves. It includes recreational and off-road riding as well as competitive racing. BMX is represented in international events, including the Olympic Games and the X Games.
A fleet of bikes, along with helmets and jerseys, are available for riders learning the sport at Hire Park. “Just bring your enthusiasm,” said track operator Dan Rumple. “The Hire Park BMX track is suitable for all ages and proficiencies. Whether you’re a first-timer or experienced rider, come out and roll around the fast, smooth racing surface or catch some big air over the variety of jumps.”
Riders with more developed racing skills will be challenged by step-ups (a jump with the landing higher than the launch); step-downs (a jump with a landing lower than the launch); rollers (a track obstacle to roll over rather than jump); and doubles (two hills close enough together for riders to jump the gap).
The sport supports good health, balance, fitness, competition and socialization. “Riders meet new people and make friends,” Rumple said. “They step away from the electronic devices and enjoy the outdoors. Our friendly and supportive environment builds character and confidence through healthy competition and cooperation among the riders.”

Although having fun is a priority, there are some rules. A full-face or open-face helmet with mouth protection, long sleeves and pants must be worn at all times. To use the track, riders must have a valid USABMX license, available at the track site.
The track opens in April and closes at the end of October.
Practices and races, plus clinics by top locals or a pro rider traveling through the area are offered.
Retirees or anyone interested can get involved at the track, which is staffed by volunteers. No experience is necessary – those who wish to volunteer can leave their request at the registration window.

GIRL BOSSES
MEET THE WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS OF KOSCIUSKO COUNTY
I’m so proud of the women leaders in this community who are impactful, inspiring, and influential,” said Michelle Ledrew, owner of Glam Boutique in Warsaw. Kosciusko County is known for its beautiful lakes and picturesque countryside, but it’s also home to a thriving community of women entrepreneurs. These women have not only brought their unique talents and ideas to the area, but they have also created successful businesses that contribute to the local economy. Let’s look closely at some of these inspiring women and their success stories.

AMANDA MEERZO
– The River Coffeehouse
Amanda Meerzo purchased The River Coffeehouse in North Webster because she knew it played a vital role in the community and did not want to see it leave.
In 2024, Amanda expanded to an additional location in Warsaw. “We wanted to expand to Warsaw for a few years and was waiting for the right moment!” After a location was available in downtown Warsaw, they quickly realized they needed a larger space and were able to move across the street in November.
The hardest aspect of being a woman in business is balancing it all. “I am a married mom of four and co-own another business with my husband. Finding the balance and time for everything can be the most challenging.”
Her advice to women in business is, “follow your passion—if you have a feel for it, you can make it happen.”
MICHELLE LEDREW – Glam Boutique
Michelle Ledrew created Glam Boutique to provide a personal and meaningful retail experience for their clients while providing an empowering and positive space for employees, and also to give back to the community.
For her, the most challenging part of owning a retail business as a woman is providing good work life balance for both her and her employees while maintaining good operating hours for a retail store.
“If you’re looking to open a business, Kosciusko County is the place to do it! Our community supports small businesses and is full of creative entrepreneurs and fun collaborations,” Ledrew concluded.

AMANDA SCROGGS – The Barn 1880: Historic Venue
The restoration of The Barn 1880: Historic Venue was designed by Jon Scroggs, a skilled carpenter. Handling daily operations and creative marketing is Amanda Scroggs, an educator and media specialist. Amanda’s passion for history led her to save the barn after learning about Sarah Ellen Pound through a chance encounter at the farmhouse door a few years back. Jane White, Sarah Ellen Pound’s greatniece, presented Amanda with an original 1909 copy of The Indianapolis Star featuring her great-aunt, the barn, and the farmhouse on the front page. The article highlighted Sarah Ellen Pound’s challenges as a pioneering unmarried farmer striving for success in an era where women lacked voting rights. Moved by Pound’s resilience and charm, Amanda was inspired to preserve her legacy.

“Growing up in England, I was surrounded by strong female role models, including my influential school headmistress and figures like Queen Elizabeth and Margaret Thatcher. I am fortunate to have such remarkable examples of leadership to look up to. One person who truly inspires me is Sarah Ellen Pound, who refused to be held back by limitations,” said Amanda Scroggs.
The Barn 1880 held the Women Owned Business Market hosted by the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce last year. This was a fantastic event promoting all the women leading businesses in the county.
MADDIE ANWEILER – Pete & Freddy's Pages Aplenty
In the Autumn of 2009, I opened my bookstore in the little town of Mentone with my younger sister (Freddy). We have a mutual love for the written word and all things BOOKS!
I am passionate about sharing books with my community and the bookstore has truly become an extended family for me. We opened with a little over 2,000 books throughout 3 rooms. Things look very different today, a little over fifteen years later. I now own and operate the shop solo. Freddy went on to new adventures at the end of 2022. In April of 2023, with the help of my awesome Book Club, we moved the shop next door to a bigger location. Today the shop shelves nearly 50,000 books at any given time. Books continue to be a place I find great solace and safety in, and it is always my hope that the shop is that for my customers too.

The shop’s Book Club, Allegedly, will celebrate four years this year. The bookstore is the magical place I have always dreamed of it being, a destination for readers everywhere!
SPECIALTY ITEMS & BOUTIQUES

Kosciusko Style
For foods as colorful, various and astounding as the world itself, adventurers need travel no farther than Kosciusko County, where many cultures and cuisines provide an international map to gustatory delight.

Piña & Coconut in Warsaw conjures island breezes, marimba music and the scent of spicy food on an open fire. AfroLatino owners Dudley and Shevonie Allen are 14-year community residents, and they give the love back through the restaurant’s Latin American and West Indian cuisine.
Latin Caribbean food developed on Nicaragua’s Atlantic coast, but all five Central American countries and the West Indian islands lend their traditions and influence.
Jerk chicken, Nica fish (whole red snapper) and Caribbean chicken are specialties, but diners also enjoy many other original dishes.

Unique spices, vegetables and meats combine for a taste of the islands.
“Plantains cooked as tostones (twicefried slices), tajadas (fried chips) or fried ripe; cabbage salad and steamed cabbage; allspice, jerk seasonings, scotch bonnet peppers and habaneros; Latin and Caribbean cultures are rich in everything -- spice, flavor and life,” she said.
A new version of local favorite Yamato Japanese Steakhouse, Sushiko in

Warsaw welcomes diners with a colorful fusion of Chinese and Japanese décor and a stunning view of Center Lake. Owner Li Min Zhao wished to expand his restaurant operation in Warsaw, a fortunate outcome for diners who love international cuisine.
Inside, inverted umbrellas adorn the ceiling, while iconic red lanterns and dragon art forecast the delicious mixture of Asian cuisine soon to issue from the kitchen.

Sushiko’s extensive menu ranges from appetizers to sushi to full meals. For their specialty hibachi meals, chefs enhance dishes with special sauces made in the restaurant. Healthy, fresh vegetables -- broccoli, zucchini, carrots, onions and mushrooms -- blossom with flavor infused with house-made teriyaki sauce.
Traditional sides of egg fried rice, miso, clear and eggdrop soups and iceberg salad with homemade ginger dressing complement hibachi-fired dishes and other meals.
Additional items for dine-in or carry-out include sushi, beef, chicken or shrimp dishes cooked in a variety of ways.
While one feature simply can’t capture all of Kosciusko’s international dining spots, here’s a list of others to try. Just follow your nose – and your taste buds.

Selfie Spots
DISCOVER MURALS AND OTHER WORKS OF ART TO USE AS THE BACKGROUND TO YOUR NEXT SELFIE SESH.
Find the perfect, expressive, colorful spot for your next selfie here in Kosciusko County. Our communities are filled with beautiful murals and sculptures gracing both our urban and rural areas. Create an Instagram worthy image to remember this destination by these works of art.
Harmony
Located in North Webster, Indiana, this mural celebrates our differences and promotes how we can live in harmony. It is located on the side of Roll-NSmoke BBQ, across the street from a castle-like structure that houses Pilcher’s Shoes.

Clearly Kosciusko Mural
This mural inside the Kosciusko County Visitor Center was designed to represent Kosciusko County's over 100 lakes and create a warm and colorful welcome for visitors. It is also designed to be the perfect picture and selfie spot, so snap away while visiting! This mural was created through funding from the IN Indiana Art Activation Grant through Indiana Destination Development Corporation. It was created by artists Erica Deuel and Beth Williman from Spoonful of Imagination.

Native Americans
The sculpture honors the wildlife and Native Americans who occupied the south and east shores of Winona Lake before the arrival of the first white settler, John Hamilton, in 1836. First the Miamis, then the Potawatomis were the Native Americans who occupied the southern and eastern shores of Winona Lake until being forcibly removed by the U.S. government in 1838. Treaties opened the way for the first white settlers and eventually for the Beyer Brothers to found a town in 1881. Steve Perry crafted this sculpture.

STRANGER THINGS IN KOSCIUSKO COUNTY
Explore the strange and haunted locations of Kosciusko County.
"
In the 17 years I’ve been doing this, I have investigated some of the most haunted locations in the United States. That being said, some of the most active locations I have ever seen have been right here in our own community,” Greg Steffe testified.
Greg Steffe, Co-Director for the Kosciusko County Historical Society has been a part of the Old Jail Museum team for a little over three years, previously led the Spirits of Warsaw Ghost Tours in downtown Warsaw and has a wealth of experience dealing with paranormal activity, including a formal education at Indiana Purdue University.
The highly popular Stranger Things TV series is set to air season 5 this year on Netflix. In honor of this show that has captured the hearts of many of us, here is a list of the stranger things to be found in Kosciusko County. Take a trip to Kosciusko County and brave these haunted locations if you dare.

Barbee Hotel
Take a step back in time when you walk into this old gangster hideout. The hotel was originally built in 1897 and was first called Hotel Ormond.
Al Capone was known for showing up with his gang and renting out the entire third floor of the hotel, kicking everyone else out, and staying for weeks at a time. Al Capone always stayed in room 301, and local legend has it you can still see cigar smoke coming from under the door in room 301.
“As soon as I topped the stairs, I was immediately overpowered by the overwhelming smell of cigar smoke. Well, one of the stories they tell is, Capone was infamously fond of his cigars, and this phenomenon has been encountered many times in that building. This was so strong I could follow it down the
hallway,” Steffe said of experiencing this phenomenon himself.
Reports of an old man who mysteriously vanishes and a figure looking out the third story window of the hotel are also common among the staff working at this location.
If you are looking for a haunted place to stay or just grab a bite to eat, the Barbee Hotel & Restaurant is rich in history and steeped in mystery.
Old Kosciusko County Jail
“One day one of our volunteers was standing right there at that sink washing a coffee pot. He felt wet fingers on his face and thought that one of the ladies back in the library was playing a joke on him, so he spun around with a big grin on his face just in time to see the wispy, shadowy figure of a woman disappear
around the corner,” Steffe recounted of one memorable paranormal encounter.
The jail was built in 1870 and was made from Indiana limestone. The building continued to serve as county jail until 1982, when the new one was built. It is now the home of the Kosciusko County Historical Society.
In its long history, the jail has had at least 8 violent deaths associated with it, along with many ghost sightings and reports of paranormal activity.
The very frequently seen spirit of one of the former sheriffs, scratch marks appearing suddenly on volunteers and visitors, flashlights which will turn on and off on their own in direct response to yes or no questions, and disembodied voices have also been reported in the building.
Visit this location to learn more about the fascinating history of the building, while keeping your eyes peeled for mysterious figures or items that seem to move all on their own.

UNIQUE FINDS

VENUE VENTURES
Life is for celebrating, and there’s no better place to do so than in Kosciusko County’s beautiful event centers. Here are some choices for groups of all types and sizes.
Oakwood Resort, Syracuse
Situated on picturesque Lake Wawasee, Oakwood Resort combines beauty and historic charm in an inviting, tranquil atmosphere. A main hotel, two large indoor spaces and several outdoor areas attract groups of all sizes. A restaurant with outdoor dining and a tiki bar add summer sizzle in a blend of tradition and modernity.
Tented weddings on the grand lawn overlooking the lake are highlights for general manager Alyssa Trout. “Another standout event, the Syracuse Chamber’s LeadHERship Luncheon, spotlighted female leadership for over 200 women,” Trout said. August boat shows, charity fundraisers, raffles and retreats held here illustrate Oakwood’s versatility.
Founded as Oakwood Park in 1893 for Chautauqua-style meetings of the Evangelical Church, Oakwood’s rich history and some original structures are preserved by the Parent family.
The Barn 1880, Warsaw
A stunning blend of old and new attracts diverse groups to The Barn 1880. Built by turn-of-the-century agricultural pioneer Sarah Pound, it was part of a progressive operation that used a windmill and ponds.
Tippy Creek Winery, Leesburg

Nearly 145 years later, modern amenities surrounded by reclaimed wood and stone, high ceilings, hand-hewn beams and large, sunlight-loving windows create an event destination. Weddings, corporate gatherings, staff retreats, birthdays and anniversaries, reunions and community events are spotlighted in the upper-level Granary, lower-level Milk Parlor, Corn Crib or Farm House. Above, a deck overlooks 100 acres of lush farming countryside; below, patios showcase the beautiful event grounds.
Last July’s debut Bands in The Barn 1880 delighted owners Jon and Amanda Scroggs. Attendees enjoyed food truck eats, a cash bar, children’s activities and live performances.
Tippy Creek Winery, Leesburg
The first and only Kosciusko County farm winery, Tippy Creek nestles between corn fields in picturesque farm country. Featuring wines with the robust flavor of grapes from Michigan, the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, Chili and Argentina, the transformed fiveacre farm welcomes wine enthusiasts, community members and everyone interested in trying their wines.
Indiana Wine Association owners
Daniel and Lori Richcreek and co-owner daughter Lindsey Parker strive to make great wines and give customers a memorable wine experience. “Daniel has often said, ‘Build it and they will come.’ He was exactly right,” Lori said.

The winery regularly hosts public events, including weekly trivia, monthly comedy club nights, an annual balloon glow and dueling pianos shows. Corporate events and weddings situate here, including a 50th wedding anniversary celebration in July. “We were super excited about that,” Lori said.
Blue Barn Berry Farm, Syracuse
Set on an operating blueberry farm, Blue Barn’s unique indoor-outdoor lakeside facility features retractable clear walls that open to admit the sun, breezes and view, and drop when temperature, wind and rain could intrude. Modern temperature control completes the comfort package.
The simple you-pick berry operation and market burgeoned in 12 years to a thriving three-venue, full-scale event business. Charity events, corporate retreats, showers, weddings, graduation parties, banquets, birthdays and luncheons benefit from the beautiful, day-away setting.
The new Hidden Oak Manor, an elegant indoor facility with outdoor pavilion and ceremony area, serves 175-200. Farmhouse Events & Catering can handle 65, with full remote catering, including bar service.
To give back, owners Chris and Shanda Scheeren founded Blue Barn Fundraising, giving 100 percent of profits made through local partners to schools and non-profits (BlueBarnFundraising.com).

BORN AND BOOMING
Orthopedic industry thrives in Warsaw
Known as the Orthopedic Capital of the World®, Warsaw is the birthplace of orthopedic design and manufacturing. Many of the world’s top orthopedic companies start and stay in the area.

With the highest concentration of design and manufacturing internationally, the Warsaw-area orthopedic industry employs approximately 13,000 people and represents one-third of the world’s orthopedic manufacturing, including nearly two-thirds of hip and knee manufacturing.
While the presence of a world-renowned industry seems like an anomaly in a small Midwestern town, it began as simply as its rural heritage: with one guy’s idea. In 1895, chemist and pharmaceutical salesman Revra DePuy founded DePuy Manufacturing with the aim of supplying customized fiber splints to patients. The
area’s strategic location to intersecting railways for distribution fit the plan well.
As other idea-men joined the industry, orthopedics gained momentum. A member of the DePuy sales team, Justin O. Zimmer, eventually established his own orthopedic company in 1927 in the basement of his home at Winona Avenue and Indiana Street, moving then to a building on North Detroit Street.
And, like a well-oiled machine, the Warsaw orthopedics industry just kept on moving. In 1977, four former Zimmer employees started Biomet Inc., headed by Dane Miller. Becoming a worldwide leader in the medical device industry quickly, Biomet expanded to its current Warsaw facility in 1980. In 2014, Zimmer announced its purchase of Biomet, creating today’s Zimmer Biomet.
Stories like these and others would continue to unfold over the years, resulting in companies like OrthoPediatrics, formed in 2006, leading innovation in pediatric orthopedics with new products and services for customers and patients.
Today, an amalgam of orthopedic companies and manufacturers call the Warsaw area home, including Arch Medical, Avalign Technologies, Banner Medical, Danco Medical, EnPak, Instrumental Machine & Development, Ignite Orthopedics, Johnson & Johnson MedTech, Medartis, Medtronic, Mentor
Media, Micropulse, Paragon Medical, Precision Medical Technologies, Priority Medical, Stryker and Tecomet.
With adaptation the key to success, Warsaw companies are tackling transition from the world of medical devices to a whole new frontier of medical technology, providing new technologies and advancements for surgeons and patients. Collaboration has become imperative and achieved through the region’s vast variety of companies. Over time, a production ecosystem has developed as needs emerge.

The industry has also helped to form and inform its community. As the largest employer, orthopedics makes local employees partners in improving the lives of people everywhere. By introducing international cultures, it exposes local residents to diverse thoughts and manners. Other positives are the delightful mix of new cuisines, activities, festivals and soon, even a cricket pitch for matches.

MOVES THAT MATTER
REMOTE WORKERS HEAD TO KOSCIUSKO

Sometimes when you make your move, there’s no place like home. That’s what Jeremy Lehman figured when he started out with a new job in a new company.
The Kosciusko County native moved to Washington to work for Amazon. Later on, he began doing remote work for Onxmaps. This company recently opened up Indiana as a state their remote employees could work from, providing Lehman the opportunity to move back to Indiana. “I kept an eye on it, and knew there was a possibility to return to Kosciusko County through the Make My Move program if I desired to do so. I moved this past June, and nothing has changed with my job since moving here. We have distributed workers across all time zones, so the move was honestly quite easy in regard to work,” he said.
The move brought him everything he wished for – the familiarity and love for home and family and the broad range of uniquely Kosciusko lifestyle attractions. “It is always nice to be closer to my family who live in town, which certainly contributes to my peace of mind. I always enjoy the
mellow recreational opportunities around, like biking, kayaking and the ability to pop up to Michigan if I want to go play in the snow during the winter,” he said.
For Brian and Kolleen Lansing, her Kosciusko family connections, his work history there and his status as a fulltime remote worker were convincing reasons to move back to the county through the Make My Move program.
With Brian’s jobs moving them around the Midwest, they first heard of Make My Move on a Des Moines, Iowa local TV program. Learning of a small Kansas town offering incentives for remote workers to relocate, they investigated and discovered Kosciusko Economic Development Corp. (KEDCO) offers the program.
“Around 90 percent of my company’s workforce is remote, making the flexibility of Make My Move a perfect fit,” Brian said.
The move from Iowa back to Kosciusko County tied the roots of their earlier lives together. Kolleen grew up in Mentone, and he drove from Winona
Lake to work there for Cargill, where the couple met.
Now eyeing retirement in a few years, they will enjoy reconnecting with their family and church. “The area’s natural beauty, including its lakes and rivers, was also a significant factor,” Brian said.
“We anticipate becoming involved in local groups and organizations once we’re settled. We purchased a home northeast of Warsaw, and look forward to meeting new people in the community.”
They found the application process straightforward and user-friendly. “We received a prompt response from the program administrator, and we have already met with Jessica Hauck from KEDCO. We would highly recommend it to anyone considering relocation as a remote worker,” Brian said.

GLOBAL LINK: PLUG & PLAY CONNECTS LOCAL STARTUPS

Plug in a startup business and help it play out for everyone’s benefit. It’s a simplified version of what Plug and Play Warsaw, which opened at Zimmer Biomet in March, plans.
Based in Silicon Valley, Plug and Play drives innovation by connecting entrepreneurs, corporations and investors worldwide. Plug and Play Warsaw is one of the newest of over 50 international locations.
Plug and Play offers startup accelerator programs in industry-specific ventures like medical technology (medtech) in Warsaw; venture capital investment in promising startups; and corporate innovation through relationships with global partners.
“Plug and Play Warsaw brings together key players to create a powerful innovation ecosystem -- corporations, startups, investors, mentors, governments, universities and more,” said Program Manager Eileen Alberding. “It is accelerating startups

with medtech solutions. Startups at any stage can apply to be considered for the accelerator program, and there is no cost to participate.”
Selected startups gain access to relationships, information and resources they need to grow, including support from experts and resources from the Warsaw community; corporate partners like Zimmer Biomet, Paragon Medical and OrthoPediatrics; and the Plug and Play ecosystem. Support includes mentorship, workshops on topics of general and industry-specific relevance, introduction to corporate leaders and visibility to a network of over 130 venture capital firms, plus Plug and Play ventures, for potential investment.
Medtech startups can provide vital innovation, new ideas and new technology to corporations wishing to grow market share and remain industryrelevant, Alberding said. “Startups often respond to shifting marketplaces and new technologies with agility, which large corporations with shareholders
eyeing products sure to turn a profit may lack.”
Plug and Play Warsaw hears challenges facing its corporate partners, and its network of over 80,000 startups, including those in the medtech accelerator program, offer technical solutions, products and services to answer those needs.
Through the medtech accelerator, over 50 startups annually will experience the expertise and history of the Kosciusko County medtech and device industry through relationships with local partners and mentors, gaining exposure to the advantages and benefits available to businesses calling Indiana home.
“Economic development organizations at every level recognize innovation and entrepreneurship -- and communities that support them -- as key to a healthy economy that attracts and retains top talent. Plug and Play Warsaw is fortunate in the support of its corporate partners,” Alberding said.
