HISTORY OF SYRACUSE

he Syracuse/Wawasee area is a developing and everchanging community that blends a progressive, diverse economy with country charm and mid-western friendliness. It has also been a destination for visitors for generations due to our beautiful lakes, including Wawasee, the largest natural lake in Indiana. With Wawaseeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s waterway connection to Syracuse Lake there are more than 3,500 acres of water for year round recreation.

Syracuse is a small rural town of approximately 3,000 year-round residents, increasing in the summer months to around 20,000 due to the part-time lake residents. Syracuse offers a high standard of living, which includes desirable housing, warm neighborhoods, a strong commitment to schools, a low crime rate, easy access to Fort

Wayne or Chicago and a large employment base. Syracuse is known for its narrow tree-lined streets both in the commercial and

residential areas and is proud to be a Tree City USA. Downtown Syracuse is composed of historic and distinct architectural brick buildings that line Main Street that have been home to a variety of businesses since the town of Syracuse was laid out in 1837.

Our rural lakeside tourism destination has a lot to offer people of all ages including The Lakeland Youth Center, the Syracuse Community Center, several childcare options, a modern nursing home for senior citizens, several physicians and an urgent care center. There are also several banks in town, and more than half of the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 25 restaurants are locally owned. EXPERIENCE THE CULTURE WAWASEE AREA CONSERVANCY FOUNDATION (WACF)

In 1991, the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, was created to protect, preserve, and enhance the Wawasee Area Watershed for present and future generations. The Wawasee Area Watershed ecosystem includes Lake Wawasee (Indiana's largest natural lake at over 3,000 acres), Syracuse Lake, Bonar Lake, Papakeechie Lake, as well as the ten lakes in the Upper Turkey Creek sub-watershed.

The WACF protects over 10 Photo credit Heather Harwood miles of shoreline and fifty-three properties, totaling over 860 acres of critical wetlands and woodlands that are adjacent to lakes and tributaries in the watershed.

WACF primary focus is clean water. Through careful monitoring, water testing and work with state, regional and other environmental partners, the WACF works to anticipate, search out, and resolve threats to the watershed and to its water quality.

to human actions, the WACF is dedicated to promoting education programs. The Levinson-LaBrosse Lakes and Wetlands Education Center, serves as the WACF headquarters and is located on 40 acres of wetlands, woods and lakeshore, approximately one mile south of town on SR13. On-site at the Center are over two and a half miles of trails for walking and hiking.

WACF Canoe Trips provide a unique view of our watershed and a firstclass wetlands education. Starting in midJune and Fridays throughout the summer, our expert volunteer guides lead you through the ten lakes of the watershed where you'll see the spring fed lakes and wetlands that help provide us with clean water, varying flora and fauna and miles of shoreline protected by the WACF. Trips begin at 7:30 AM are wrapped-up around noon. WACF Canoe Trips have become very popular and advance planning is advised. The Chautauqua experience is based on engaging the public in four areas called Pillars by the Chautauqua Institute: Arts, Education, Religion, Recreation. ChautauquaWawasee, based out of Oakwood, has several cultural events planned that focus on their four pillars. Located inside the Syracuse Community Center across from Lakeside Park, the Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum has been offering a glimpse back into Syracuseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history since 1987. It was founded with funds gained from the Syracuse Sesquicentennial Celebration and occupied a room in the Syracuse Public Library until June 2002 when it moved to its current location. The museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main attractions are the 1905 Mier car designed by local resident Sheldon Harkless, and a collection of Native

SYRACUSE PUBLIC LIBRARY

Whether youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a current resident, a new addition to Syracuse or just returning to the lake for the summer, the Syracuse Public Library is a wonderful community resource for all of your information needs. The library has a full range of materials to choose from: large print section, periodical section, Phone: 574.457.5637

audio book section, DVD section, as well as many volumes of reference materials, in addition to fiction and non-fiction selections (for children, adults and young adults). There is a local history section with volumes outlining the history of Kosciusko County and Indiana history. The microfilm collection includes local newspapers dating from 1875 through 2004; physical copies of local newspapers are kept in the library for five years after the publication date. There are approximately 87,000 library visits each year. The Syracuse Public Library is also in possession of twenty-two historic books detailing the history of Syracuse and Kosciusko County. PARKS, TRAILS AND LAKES Henry Ward Park – Henry Ward Park is named for one of the cofounders of Syracuse, Henry Ward, who was the first Postmaster in Syracuse and an Associate Judge in Kosciusko County. Henry Ward Park has experienced many updates since 1992, including the addition of a boardwalk, fishing pier and a recently updated playground. It is a popular fishing spot, hosting many Bass Fishing Tournaments throughout the spring-fall months. The park is conveniently located adjacent to the public access site for Syracuse Lake for easy access to put in and take out boats. The park has a pavilion with a charcoal grill, restrooms, a fishing pier, playground equipment for the kids and has plenty of shade during the hot summer months.

Veteran’s Memorial Park – Shaded by mature canopy trees and lying along State Road 13, which runs through the heart of Syracuse, Veteran's Memorial Park at Crosson Mill has a historical theme with a cannon and a Veteran's Memorial, including names of those individuals from the Syracuse area who have served in the Armed Forces. Veteran's Memorial Park at Crosson Mill is also the site of the Laudeman Family Pavilion and Playground which was constructed in 2008. The pavilion is available for lunches, birthday parties, or other special events and has restrooms attached. The Veteran’s Memorial and clock serve as a reminder to honor the service men and women in our area.

Lakeside Park – Lakeside Park is the anchor of the Syracuse Parks system as the oldest and largest park in Syracuse and dates back into the 1930’s.

Harold Schrock Athletic Complex – Located at 900 W. Brooklyn St., the Harold Schrock Athletic Complex has the following amenities for use by the general public:4 baseball/softball fields with dirt infields and portable pitching mounds (2 with lights), 2 tee ball fields, 1 football field, and a 1/2 mile walking trail. Plans are also being made to make the Harold Schrock Athletic Complex a Trailhead along the SyracuseWawasee Trail. In the winter it

The park is lined with Saucer Magnolia trees that blossom in early spring providing a breathtaking view. Lakeside Park also has the Ken Harkless Gazebo, a picnic pavilion, playground and swimming beach. 15

Syracuse Community Center â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The community center is located at 1013 N. Long Dr. across from Lakeside Park. Since opening in the summer of 2002, the Syracuse Community Center has become home to many Syracuse special events, as well as daily use for young and old alike. The Community Center houses a computer lab, fitness room, Senior Citizen area, gymnasium and additional rooms available to rent for meetings and other events such as family parties. The Community Center is also home to the Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum. For more information about the rental of the Parks grounds, venues or the 16

VOTER REGISTRATION

To register to vote it is required that you be a US Citizen, 18 yrs. of age by the time of the general election, a resident of the township for at least 60 days and a resident of the precinct 30 days by the day of the fall general election. Applications are available at the Syracuse Library and the town clerkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office. You must be registered at least 30 days prior to the election. Primary Election is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in May of each year in which a general election is held, at which time state, county, city, town or township officials are elected. General Election is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November following the Primary.

FISHING & HUNTING

A license is required in the state of Indiana for anyone over the age of 16 who wished to fish. Anyone intending to hunt will need a license regardless of age. Licenses may be obtained at most sporting goods stores.
