The Parent & Baby Magazine – Summer 2020

Let’s talk pregnancy, baby and toddler

This magazine has been created with a lot of love, passion and desire to help and support parents in, and around, Norfolk and beyond. It has come together through a time of huge uncertainty, worry and desire to help others, need to support local small businesses and adapt to a new way of live. Without each and every advertiser and influencer who has helped this particular issue come to life I wouldn’t have been able to pull together this magazine for many more months to come. With every curve ball life throws us comes survival and a new way of thinking and it is this that I’ve found so much inspiration from. The pregnancy, baby and toddler industry is one which has had to ‘keep going’. Babies are still being born, newborns are developing, babies are growing into toddlers – life for them and their parents has not been halted, yet it’s become a much harder world to grow in. I’ve been amazed at how quickly businesses have created online versions of their classes and courses and how retailers have flipped to working online so easily. In this issue you will read about many businesses who have successfully done this and learn about what opportunities there are for you right from the comfort of your sofa. As ever, a big thank you to our magazine sponsor:

Lots of love Alex x

Success With Siblings by Shellie Wall Photography If you have older children, it’s only natural that you’d want them included in a few images at your newborn session. All our deluxe newborn sessions include siblings and family shots as standard, but we all know children don’t always play ball. Here are some tips to help make the session run smoothly, whoever your photographer may be: •

If your child is old enough to understand, discuss the session with them beforehand so they know they will be having their photo taken. Make sure your child isn’t tired, poorly or hungry before the shoot. If they’re unwell, please don’t bring them, it’s better to rearrange their part of the shot Dress siblings in something simple and plain. Pale, neutral colours are best. Avoid patterns, overly bright colours and NO logos or character outfits (Paw patrol etc)

Make sure faces are clean, bring wipes in case they need a quick clean on arrival – you’d be surprised how many arrive with snot encrusted noses and food around their mouths

Bring a favourite toy along

A favourite snack is great for bribing, they can be hidden in props so your child will hunt for them

Don’t threaten if they play up. Most photographers will offer to try another day if your child doesn’t want their photo taken so you can sit back and relax.

THE HAPPY MOTHER COMPANY HOW TO REMAIN POSITIVE DURING PREGNANCY We’ve all been there haven’t we? You dream about a straight forward pregnancy and the most perfect birth of your little one. But then something comes along and throws a spanner in the works and you’re left feeling worried, flummoxed and wondering what to do next! Any negative feelings and anxiety you have stem from your mindset. When you have a negative experience, you start to operate from your primitive mind, which may causes you to feel anxious and increase your worry. This is completely normal, natural and okay in these cicumstances, but if you continue to operate from this area of the brain then those feelings will continue and often you’ll be stuck in an undesirable pattern. So, how do you remain positive? As cliché as it may sound, retraining yourself to focus on the more positive aspects of the situation is always a good start. For example - the COVID – 19 outbreak – it’s been completely unexpected and life changing, but there are good points; Many people are finding more time to look after themselves, reflect on life and make important decisions. How nice is it when you experience those ‘happy ahh’ moments, and you feel boosted? That is because when we have a positive thought, interaction, or experience we release a hormone called serotonin, which allows us to feel happier and content! So, if we repeat this activity, we can boost our positivity!

I want you to remember the “three P’s” – Postive Thoughts, Positive Interaction and Positive Action – all of these are designed to help the brain focus on the good things and increase serotonin. Examples of things you could do during pregnancy to help this release are; Write some Birth Affirmations (positive thoughts), do some pregnancy relaxation (positive activity) and video call your nearest and dearest (positive interaction). I would love to tell you more about how to remain positive! Please feel free to connect with me via email or social media! WWW.THEHAPPYMOTHERCOMPANY.CO.UK AMY@THEHAPPYMOTHERCOMPANY.CO.UK

Tips To Massage Your Baby At Home

Firstly, there are few circumstances where you would not massage your little one and those would be when:

Baby massage is hugely beneficial for your little one and can be done from birth.

They are asleep – it’s all about positive touch and they are aware of what is happening

Up to 24 hours after any injections

Up to 20 minutes after a feed

If they are unwell/grouchy

By My Mama and Me

One of the most important aspects of your baby’s development is your loving touch. Research has revealed that routine massaging by a parent or caregiver can lead to improved growth, communication and learning. It is a wonderful way of communicating with your baby and through positive touch you will discover what works for you both.It is important to remember that massage is something you do ‘with’ rather than ‘to’ your baby. Knowing how to massage your baby safely and in a way that both you and your baby feel comfortable is very important so I have a few tips for massaging at home. Email alice@mymamaandme.co.uk  @Mymamaandmenorwich  My_Mama_and_Me

If you don’t think you are doing the strokes right or your baby looks uncomfortable, it’s important to stop. Don’t force your little one to do something they are not happy with. SET THE SCENE Maybe dim the lights, light a candle safely, play some calming music and keep the room nice and warm. I’d suggest using organic sunflower or coconut oil, this will help your hands glide smoothly over the skin. Always do a patch test on the skin first before smothering baby in anything. Lastly, relax and enjoy!

Our 5 week baby massage course is a beautiful way to relax and bond with your little one. Learn massage strokes which are proven to relieve your baby from many common ailments: • Colic • Constipation • Teething • Reflux • Wind • Improved Sleep

6 Benefits Of Working Out At Home By ATP Workouts On Demand

Here are some of the benefits that come with sweating it out at home, according to experts. IT’S COMFORTABLE BECAUSE IT’S YOUR SPACE Walking into an open gym surrounded by unfamiliar faces and machinery can be daunting, to say the least. Not only are you walking into a sea of strangers, but you’re also moving your body and working up a sweat, so it’s totally normal to feel out of place. If your nerves start affecting the way you perform, you might want to consider a home workout practice to make things more comfortable all-around. YOU DON’T HAVE TO COMMUTE Someone who travels to and from work every day might not want an extra commute tacked onto their daily routine. The solution? Home workouts, where the commute is literally seconds from your bedroom door. IT’S USUALLY EASY TO FIT A HOME WORKOUT INTO ANY SCHEDULE You should never feel obligated to work out, especially if you’re juggling a hectic schedule. Sometimes life gets busy, and at the end of the work day, you just want to relax, so heading to the gym might not be overly convenient for you. Walking a few steps to the living room, however, is a different story. It takes just 30+ minutes to complete a workout with ATP Workouts On Demand. A subscription with ATP Workouts On Demand gives you 24/7 access to over 80 x 30 minute online home fitness classes, plus a 60 days body transformation challenge with a local highly qualified Personal Trainer.

YOU’RE LESS LIKELY TO CATCH STRANGE GERMS Germs are everywhere and unfortunately, you can only trust yourself to take every necessary precaution not to catch or spread whatever’s going around. To be frank, the gym can be a germ-infested cesspool, but you know for a fact your home turf is clean. YOU CAN TAKE YOUR TIME My number one pet peeve at the gym is when someone creeps around your space, impatiently waiting to hop on the machine you’re using as soon as you finish your last rep. Working out at home gives you the freedom to do it on your own time and based on your ability and goals. THE ONLY PERSON TO COMPARE YOURSELF TO IS, WELL, YOU I know I often fall into the trap of comparing my progress to someone else’s, and that’s a huge mistake. Not everyone progresses at the same speed, so the only person you should be focusing on is yourself. At home, it’s naturally easier to maintain that focus.

Top 5 Tips To Gardening With Your Children by mini green fingers

As I observe my 7 ¾ year old girl delicately replanting our newest crop of pepper plants from an old egg carton to individual pots, I can’t help but feel how lucky she is. Gardening is something that I was not taught as a kid so seeing my children feeling confident around plants is a great gift. Our family gardening journey has been an eventful one. We have had a few tantrums as well as enjoyed lots of fun times, and many ‘wow’ moments along the way, which have grown my confidence as well as theirs.

For young children the benefits of gardening are countless, from spending time outdoors to strengthening their resilience, understanding where food comes from and teaching them about non-instant gratification. And most important of all, marvelling at how amazing nature is.

The Parent & Baby Magazine – Summer 2020

Here are a few personal tips on how to get the best out of gardening with young children:

1. Make it fun – In between sowing,

planting and waiting for things to grow, create songs, take inspiration from and use plants in artwork, explore the plant ecosystem, make your own pots and read stories about plants. It all counts towards making the little ones engaged.

2. Make it easy – young children’s fine

motor skills are still not fully developed so using larger seeds, smaller tools and managing your expectations around what they can do in the garden is key to decrease tantrum opportunities. As they grow they can get more responsibility and will require less supervision.

3. Follow their lead – There is no point in

them growing something they are not interested in (same applies for adults, doesn’t it?) or asking them to help weed the flower beds when they are only interested in watering. As they grow up they will see you do all of the different gardening activities and will naturally want to help.

4. Don’t force it – Through experience

I have learnt to suggest activities, get on with them myself and see them join me spontaneously. Some days they will prefer to just be on their swing or build a house for their latest snail or ladybird pet, forcing them away from this will make gardening feel like a chore.

5. Take it easy on yourself – Don’t set your expectations too high as gardening is like everything else you do with young children: slow, continually interrupted and messy. Be kind on yourself no matter how the activity goes, some days will be great fun, other ones might feel like hard work. Trust me, in the long run you’ll only remember the ‘wow’ moments and the fun.

Your Guide to Photographing Your Newborn at home By Jess Wilkins Newborn Photographer Precious moments with your newborn are fleeting so here are some tips for how to safely capture some gorgeous moments with your little bundle of joy whilst at home during these strange times. SAFETY – THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT POINTS The safety and comfort of your baby is more important than any photo. Please do not attempt any poses that you see newborn photographers do. We are trained in newborn safety and posing, remember this is about what you can do at home, not how to recreate a studio perfect image. Pets and siblings make for wonderful baby photography but should never be photographed without another adult right there to keep an eye (and hand) on the baby. If you’re using a large camera and you’re taking photos above baby, always wear the camera strap around your neck. GETTING READY - HOW TO SET THE ROOM • Babies are energy-based and will pick up on your anxiety so just relax and go with the flow •

Make the room snug & warm to keep your baby happy

Give your baby a good feed prior to taking photos to ensure they are relaxed and content (be sure to burp them too)

I find white noise can really soothe a newborn during a shoot, try giving this a go if your baby is a little unsettled.

LIGHTING AND POSITION • At home you can achieve great results by trying to take your photos in the rooms that get the best gentle window light (not direct sunlight) •

When positioning the baby close to the window, make sure the light is coming from the side or towards the top of the baby’s head

You do not need fancy props. Simply spread a blanket, swaddle wrap, or sheet on the floor near a window (neutral works well like greys and whites) or lay baby on your bed and take photos looking straight down – do not take photos up baby’s nose.

Include keepsakes, teddies and milestone cards to mark this special time.

For more tips and advice on photographing your newborn head over to Jess’s blog.

All About

Norwich Maternity Voices

WHAT IS AN MVP? A Maternity Voices Partnership (MVP) is an NHS working group, a mix of individuals who use or provide maternity services. This can include service users, birth workers, doulas, service commissioners and service providers such as midwives and doctors. These people work in partnership to review and develop local maternity care. The Norwich MVP is linked to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) and the group is led by service user chair and vice chair Jenny Whatling and Jude Applin. HOW CAN WE HELP YOU? The MVP takes forward issues raised by maternity services users (mostly, parents & parents-to-be), by looking at aspects of the service in detail and making recommendations for improvements. Service users, providers and commissioners then work together on putting these changes into practice. We are interested in hearing about your experiences of maternity care so that we can represent the voices of as many families as possible.

HOW ARE THINGS CHANGING AS A RESULT OF COVID-19? We recognise that being pregnant during a pandemic adds additional stress and worry which is very difficult to avoid. We keep our social media channels up to date with national advice and information directly from our local maternity team. As you may expect during these unprecedented times maternity care is undergoing some temporary changes to safeguard you and your family. We are working very closely with NNUH to keep you up to date with all the latest changes and developments. We share regular updates on our social media pages and have also created a ‘COVID- 19 baby’ group on Facebook to encourage users to share real life experience and raise any concerns that they may have. As changes are occurring rapidly we are working hard to bring you accurate information as quickly as possible.

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED? There are several ways to get involved with the MVP, get in touch to share your personal experiences, raise an issue or to become a service user representative. You can email us norwichmvp@gmail.com or get in touch through one of our very active social media pages.

How To Prevent And Treat Burns By Mini First Aid Norfolk Young children are at far greater risk of serious burns because their skin is far more delicate than that of an adult. According to data from the The Children’s Burns Trust, the NHS treat more than 30 babies and toddlers with a hot drink burn every day. That’s over 10,000 babies and toddlers a year. A hot drink could be the most dangerous thing in the room, it could even scald a baby more than 15 minutes after being poured. 95% of childhood burns happen at home.

TOP TIPS FOR PARENTS • A hot drink takes 15 minutes to cool down to a temperature that will not scald a young child. • Hair straighteners can still burn 8 minutes after being unplugged, use heatproof bags or keep out of reach. • When running a bath, put cold water in first and top up with hot. • When bathing a baby, bath water should never be hotter than 38 C. • Use appliances such as kettles with short or curly flexes. The curly flex means that the wire coils near the plug, out of the reach of young children. • Fireguards prevent young children from crawling, walking or falling onto fires.

HOW SHOULD YOU TREAT A BURN? COOL for 20 minutes under cool running water CALL 999, 111 or your GP for advice COVER the burn loosely with cling film. Use a recognised burn gel from your first aid kit.

Always go to a hospital accident and emergency (A&E) department if the burn is large or a deeper burn is bigger than the child’s own hand. Burns of any size that cause white or charred skin or burns on the face, hands, arms, feet, legs or genitals that cause blisters should always be treated.

Article by Mini first aid Mini First Aid offers a range of classes across Norfolk for all the family; parents, grandparents, carers and for children as young as three years old, training them in basic and life-saving first aid. We usually offer 2 hour courses at venues local to you or even private bookings in your own home. 6. The sun is your best stain remover

– pop them on the line to dry or a sunny windowsill should help.

7. If your nappies smell of washing powder

when the wash is finished pop them back in for another rinse. Detergent build up can cause rashes and stop your nappy absorbing.

8.

Consider when you will use the nappies – if you are using from birth do you have an idea of what baby might weigh? Birth-to-potty systems are usually great from around 9/10lb so if baby is likely to be much smaller than this you might need a newborn set first.

9.

If you are really unsure which nappies you want to use consider hiring a kit. Either from a local nappy library (Norwich Nappuccino, Suffolk Nappy Library) or from local nappy companies like The Norfolk Nappy Company.

2. Learn the lingo. Before you get too confused

learn what all the terms mean (booster or liner, an AIO or AI2) it is best to have an idea of what they all are so you know what you need.

3. Consider who will be using the nappies

– a more complicated system might be fine for you but explaining it to grandparents or expecting childcare providers to use it could be less appealing.

4.

Buy enough nappies – consider investing in an extra 5-10 nappies to ease on the washing

5. Wash your nappies a few times before you start using them. This will help increase their absorbency.

10. If you are completely confused and not

sure where to even start then why not talk through all the different options with The Norfolk Nappy Company.

Busting self-care myths for busy parents by Sam James Coaching

Self-care is often used interchangeably with ‘me time’. It is more basic than that. It is taking care of your human needs, in the same way that you take care of your baby / child’s needs. To start with let’s challenge some misconceptions. •

Being a parent doesn’t mean that you need to sacrifice your health (both physical and emotional) – your needs are vital too, for you to flourish as a family Self-care is not a luxurious, added extra. It is sometimes the unglamorous things that you keep putting off but know are like an energy leak (dealing with that tricky phone call, clearing up that cupboard that is bugging you, challenging your mindset) Self-care does not need to be a solo activity. It can be combined with other people, and there are ways of doing it with babies / toddlers etc in tow.

It doesn’t have to be time consuming or costly

It doesn’t have to be perfect – a few minutes having a yoga stretch is self-care and hugely beneficial.

To get you started, here are some ideas for some micro-moments of self-care: •

Music – listen to whatever helps lift your mood

Clothing – favourite clothes or a colour you love. A favourite scarf to give an outfit an uplift.

Scent – perfume, room sprays, candles

Laughter – watch a funny film, YouTube cat clips or something that makes you belly laugh

Play – games, puzzles, adult colouring books – you can pick up/put down and don’t need to think too much.

Tips and Tricks For Home Education Parents by Lucy From The Life Schoolers Lucy, from The Life Schoolers, writes for each issue of our magazine about life as a family who Home Educates their 2 children, Archie (7) and Rocco (4) on a farm in rural (gorgeous) North Norfolk. We love Lucy’s articles and we hope other Home Educators enjoy reading Lucy’s tips and tricks below. Well, what strange times we have entered into recently. The world is battling a virus and as a result most families have found themselves in the unexpected position of home educating their children whilst also having to keep up with working from home. Firstly, let me just say: “well done”. So much has changed, with extra challenges that couldn’t have even been imagined a few months ago. There are definite positives to this time - more family time, less rushing around and also having time to re-evaluate what is important. But it comes hand in hand with feeling overwhelmed by a new balancing act, whilst dealing with anxieties and worries. It can also be a time that we easily slip into the dangerous game of comparison. I want to take this opportunity to encourage you that no one has the right answer. Everyone’s days, weeks and months will look different because every child is different and so is every family. Try not to compare yourself to everyone else and remember that what you see of other people’s days is often a snapshot of the ‘wins’ and not a whole and honest picture of day to day life. Even though we are used to home educating our children full time, life has undoubtedly changed for us too. There are no swimming lessons or sports, no drama groups or play dates and no visits to museums or places of interest, so it has been a time of slowing down together and learning to be patient with each other.

Find Lucy on   Email: thelifeschoolers@gmail.com www.thelifeschoolers.co.uk

In normal life, home education doesn’t mean staying at home and not seeing anyone else. It is full of socialisation, exciting experiences and learning through life. There are groups, there are meet ups, there are fun sessions, there are day trips and so much more. If you have been thinking of home educating long term and have any questions, concerns or worries, please don’t hesitate to get in touch to find out more. Take care and stay safe everyone. Lucy x

15 Super Simple Activities To Keep The Children Entertained During Lockdown By The Life Schoolers

Try some watercolour painting of something you have in your home or garden. Make use of your recycling and do some junk modelling. Enjoy a ‘poetry tea time’. Make some drinks (maybe a pot of tea) and something nice to eat and enjoy reading some poems or short stories together. Plan and build a den before snuggling up and hanging out together. Have a movie night with some special snacks. If your children are old enough, why not get them to make some tickets and set up a cinema with popcorn for sale etc. Your older children could also take on the role of reviewers and write a review for the film. Create a bucket list of all the things you will do as a family once lockdown is over. Make cards and send them to friends and family.

Use your daily exercise time to have some outdoor fun. Take a list for a scavenger hunt or see if you can spot signs of Spring/Summer. Maybe you could even find some bugs or animals on your route. Make some noise. Get the musical instruments out (or make your own) and have fun singing and dancing together. Build a bug hotel in the garden if you have the space and take the opportunity to research bugs and look into lifecycles etc. Find out what special occasions are coming up and find reasons to celebrate. For example, maybe you could have a special afternoon tea for St George’s Day on 23rd April. A chance to make some bunting and decorations and have some fun in the kitchen. Grow a sunflower in a pot and regularly measure them to see how much they have grown. Have a holiday at home. Grab your sleeping bags and pillows and camp in the garden or even in the living room. Play games, drink hot chocolate, read stories together and enjoy a mini adventure from the comfort of your home. Make bath time fun - add some balloons, glow sticks, baubles or bubbles and play some music. Make play dough from scratch (there are lots of recipes online) and let the children help. You could even make it scented or add some items to fit a particular theme. Find Lucy on   Email: thelifeschoolers@gmail.com www.thelifeschoolers.co.uk

I Got Chatty With Rachel Ducker

Rachel is an award winning, multi business owner of Bounce Magazine and marketing and design agency Apparition Marketing and Design. Rachel has recently become a mum so we caught up with her to see how she’s managing the work and baby juggle. Congratulations on little Leo. How old is Leo and how are you finding mum life these days? Thank you! I can honestly say becoming a mum has been the best thing I have ever done. My mum was 20 years old when she had me so I automatically assumed I would follow in her footsteps; however, the right man didn’t present himself until my late 20’s. So I spent 10 years building up my businesses instead. I started my first business Apparition at 23, dabbled in a few ventures in-between and started Bounce Magazine at the age of 27. In hindsight, although having a family was my ultimate dream, I am glad that I had my 20’s to explore and further my career, I now look back without any regrets and know I couldn’t have pushed myself any more than I did to succeed in my businesses. How did you find the transition from mum of 2 businesses to mum of 2 businesses AND a baby? I will be honest, I really struggled during those first few weeks of motherhood. I had a very traumatic birth which I am having prenatal counselling for. I went from being a driven businesswoman (even in my late stages of pregnancy), to a new mother

overnight who had gone through major surgery and was at her most vulnerable point in life. I feel like I entered the hospital one person and two weeks later left a new one I didn’t recognise. It took some time to adjust and I feel no shame in that. Have you managed to keep working whilst being mummy? Yes! Somehow. I was very lucky to be able to breastfeed. However, I chose to not feed on demand and to feed in 3-4 hour intervals. This helped to give me time to check emails and get a bit of work done whilst Leo slept. My usual clients completely understood I needed a little time to adapt to becoming a mum, so allowed me that time, which was so helpful. Before I had Leo, I made the very tough decision to stop printing Bounce Magazine and took it online as a digital publication. This works really well as it meant no sales targets, no deadlines and a lot less pressure. Leo also gets to be involved if there is a baby product to review, which is great fun. As for my influencing, Leo has fit very well into this and I use it to document my motherhood journey. I like to include Leo in my work as much as possible. As Leo has become older (now 8 months) this is becoming more challenging as he does need a lot more attention, but I find a routine helps to keep us both on track.

The Parent & Baby Magazine – Summer 2020

Can you give other parents-to-be who may be also thinking about what to do with their business after giving birth any advice? If you can, I would advise to give yourself a few weeks of adjustment.

Some births go well and like mine, some don’t. You have to be able to look after yourself in order to be able to look after your baby. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, you may be used to being in control and having your head together, but once all those hormones rush in and you have your little one in your arms the feeling it indescribably overwhelming. Being vulnerable is scary but it is nothing to be ashamed of so always turn to your partner or family for support.

What top tips can you give for parents-to-be who also run their own business to help them navigate the first 6 months of parenthood, whilst still running a business in the background? Make a plan in advance – inform your clients and suppliers you may require a few weeks off once you have had your baby so that you don’t feel guilty and have their support when the time comes. Use family for support – leaning on your family may just help to give you that little time you need to get a few jobs done. Prioritise – don’t stress yourself out about trying to get everything done, just do the important things for that day. You don’t want to miss out on those special moments with your new baby. Creating a balance is key and writing lists is very useful. Feeding at a time that suits you – I found going 3-4 hours rather than feeding on demand was so much easier because I had windows to get things done whilst my baby slept next to me. It also encouraged my baby to sleep longer through the night as he was used to 3-4 hour gaps. That means more sleep for you. Lower your expectations – you’re not going to be business person of the year after you’ve just had your baby, it’s more like floating on the water until you’re ready to dive in again. So go slow and pick up the pace when you feel ready again.

It can be done – there is no reason you can’t be both. I find through creating a routine, following my to do lists and having a playpen and enough toys next to my desk allows me to do it all.
