Atlanta’s High Museum of Art is the sole U.S. venue for “Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics, and Painting,” a major exhibition of work by Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera on view Feb. 14 through May 12, 2013. The exhibition – which includes new museum acquisitions, customdesigned reading rooms, bilingual displays and several related special events – features some of the best examples of Kahlo and Rivera’s art with more than 120 works, including

iconic paintings from and photographs of both artists. Few artists have captured the public’s imagination with the force of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954) and her husband, the Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera (1886 – 1957). The myths that surrounded them in their lifetimes arose not only from their significant bodies of work, but also from their active participation in the historical happenings of their time. Their work speaks of a fierce loyalty to and pride in Mexico, the ideals of the 1910

Mexican Revolution, and their commitment to the conditions of the common man. “Frida & Diego” marks the first time important works by these two influential Mexican artists will be shown in the Southeastern United State. “Frida & Diego” is also the first completely bilingual exhibition to be presented by the High, with Spanish and English versions of wall labels and audio tours, as well as bilingual tour guides on Sundays throughout the show. A full-color catalog accompanies the exhibition. 4

The exhibition pairs together works by Kahlo and Rivera chronologically and according to themes, including maternity, Mexican identity and portraiture. While the exhibition positions the artists’ work in the political and artistic contexts of their time, “Frida & Diego” also examines the ways their work continues to influence Mexican artists, with two Frida- and Diego-inspired reading rooms designed by awardwinning contemporary Mexican designers: Hector Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena. One reading room design features a bold red version of Frida’s

iconic bed, while the other features a whimsical yellow installation inspired by the game of musical chairs (pictured above). In addition to these two contemporary reading room installations, which celebrate the continued influence of Kahlo and Rivera, the High also acquired two photographs of the artists to allow a trace of the show to remain with the museum’s permanent collection. One of the acquisitions, Martin Munkacsi’s “Diego and Frida,” is an intimate and tightly cropped portrait of the couple.

Munkacsi’s photograph will be the first image visitors see as they enter the exhibition. If you aren’t familiar with the works or history of Frida & Diego this exhibit presents all the facts and information you’ll need to establish an understanding of the two. A few of our favorite pieces were “Dance to the Sun” (Diego), “My Dress Hangs Here” (Frida), “Diego & the Rockefellers” (Diego), and “Flower Festival” (Diego).

The Latino List:

Completed in 2011, The Latino List exhibition features 30 portraits. Portraits featured in the exhibition include Gloria Estefan, Victor Cruz, America Ferrera, Eva Longoria, George Lopez, Sen. Robert Menéndez, Soledad O’Brien, Pitbull, Chi Chi Rodríguez, Christy Turlington Burns, Sonia Sotomayor, and Atlanta's own Ralph de la Vega, among others. The portraits will be displayed in the Skyway Level of the High’s Anne Cox Chambers Wing. The timing couldn’t be more perfect, arriving as the perfect compliment to the “Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics, and Painting”.

With this addition to the lineup at the High Museum you can get a healthy, educated dose of latino culture and appreciation of art, work ethic, and personal accomplishments. Soon after seeing this exhibit we discovered there’s yet another way to see this. There’s a documentary on HBO that gives you each person’s personal account of how they made it to where they are today. All of the interviews were great and we especially enjoyed Soledad O’Brien’s and Judy Reyes’. The Latino List is one of several portrait projects produced by

Greenfield-Sanders. His portfolio also includes the series The Black List, Art World, and XXX: 30 Porn-Star Portraits. His portraits are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the New York Public Library, the Whitney Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The Latino List will be here until May 19th, 2013 and we are going again before it leaves. We learned a lot about other latinos who accomplished a lot but aren’t exactly in the limelight.

Good God A’Mighty! Recently I had the opportunity to attend a wonderful stage performance written, produced, and directed by Atlanta native Lolita Snipes. The play, entitled “Good God A’Mighty!” , tells the story of a young married minister that has been transferred from “The Big Apple” (New York) to “The Big Easy” (New Orleans). Needless to say there is a cultural transition that has to take place when

transferring from a city with a strong culture like New York City; and even more so, when the destination has a cultural identity as strong as New Orleans. Take those cultural clashes and magnify them times 10 because the back drop of the play is the black church! The handsome Reverend Charles Zachery (played by La Darian Raymond) and his pretty young wife (played by Brittany L. Smith) aren’t

exactly welcomed with open arms by the members of Shady Grove Baptist Church. Reverend Zachery is in the unenviable position of replacing the much beloved Reverend Persey who was embraced as the original pastor of Shady Grove. While a portion of the membership welcome him with open arms --especially Mother’s Johnson and Calhoun (played respectively by Shena Renee’ and comedienne Just June), the Reverend’s main protagonist comes in the form of a hard-nosed, angry, and ornery Sister Reen L’Dimp (played by Tony Award Winner and 4 time Grammy Nominee, Melba Moore). It seems Sister L’Dimp isn’t much on adapting to change, and she makes the transition for the young Reverend and his wife very uncomfortable. The storyline is full of zany humor, wonderful singing, and a story full of love and personal redemption. While a few decades may have passed since Ms. Moore has made a musical splash, she certainly displayed that she still has some “serious

pipes” on her throughout the show. Just June and Shena Renee’ almost steal the show with their sharp tongues, quick wit, and overall comedic talent. Brian McLaughlin (Brother Lamont), Brandon McCall (Brother Theophilus), and Dante Carter (Deacon Burton), round out the other major cast members who bring rhythm, soul, and laughter to this production. “Good God A’Mighty” has wonderful music, great singing, and is well worth the price of admission. I would give it 8 solid peaches out of 10. Worth seeing!

“Fly is a definite must see. Not only does it entertain, but it also educates. I thought I had seen and heard all there was to know about the Tuskegee Airmen. However this play was able to use song, dance, and great acting to bring out new perspectives without jeopardizing the struggle and triumph of these great heroes.” --- Kenneth Brisco, “Fly” patron, March 2, 2013, Balzer Theater at Herren’s Hello Peach Review followers! Throughout the months of February and eventually into March, the theater group Theatrical Outfit featured a wonderful stage performance at their home theater downtown Atlanta. The Balzer Theater at Herren’s featured the stage production of “Fly” – the story of four African- American pilots whose dreams it was to fly for their country during World War II. While these men successfully dealt with their Nazi enemies in the air, they also had to deal with the racism that permeated their military environment on the ground. On the heels of movies like “Red Tails” and “The Tuskegee Airmen”, one may have thought they had seen it all in

terms of stories regarding this elite group of airmen. However, “Fly” took the story telling to a whole new level; with the injection of song, dance, and some wicked humor, the audience is catapulted into the intimate side of each of these young pilots, in a way that has never been experienced thru the viewing of a movie. Writers Ricardo Kahn and Trey Ellis, along with director and choreographer Patdro Harris, truly transports the audience into the lives of these four men; experiencing what it was like to go thru their training, dealing with their racist superiors who gave them no chance of successfully completing their training; but also watching the metamorphosis of what began as utter contempt for these black pilots transition into respect and admiration for their determination and courage. What made experiencing “Fly” even more alluring was the venue at The Balzer Theater at Herren’s; if you’ve never experienced a stage performance at this downtown theater you’re truly missing a treat. The Balzer is a 199-seat theater that doesn’t have a bad seat in the house.

The theater is intimate, with wonderful acoustics; couple that with wonderful lighting, a stage set that was simple yet appropriate, and a super talented cast, and it was a formula that eventually necessitated the play to be extended by a couple of weeks. I would strongly recommend and encourage theater goers to visit www.theatricaloutfit.org for information on future stage performances --- it’s a fantastic venue. Another treat for the audience on the evening that I attended the performance, was the presence of five actual Tuskegee Airmen who were in attendance; these men were available after the performance, and gladly posed for pictures, autographed playbills, and were more than happy to engage people in friendly conversation. What started off as just an evening at the theater, morphed into a wonderful history lesson – presented by the stars of the show (the actors), and capped off by the stars of the show (the actual Tuskegee Airmen). -KJ 8

Has anyone else been waiting for this?! We discovered this on Apple’s “Front Row” not too long ago and thought “this looks good!” So in case you don’t know anything about this film we have a summary below When terrorists take down the White House (code name “Olympus”), a disgraced Secret Service agent attempts to rescue the president of the United States in “Olympus Has Fallen,” an electrifying and inspired action thriller from acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). A small group of heavily armed, meticulously trained extremists launch a daring daylight ambush on the White House, overrunning the building and taking President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart) and his staff hostage inside an impenetrable underground presidential bunker. As a pitched battle rages on the White House lawn, former presidential security officer Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) joins the fray, and finds his way into the besieged building to do the job he has trained for all his life: to protect the president – at all costs. Banning uses his extensive training and detailed knowledge of the presidential residence to become the eyes and ears of Acting President Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman) and his key advisors. With tension rising, the radicals begin executing hostages and threaten to kill more unless their outrageous demands are met. There are a few surprises in here (such as who these “radicals” are) and the story doesn’t go exactly how the commercials lead you to believe. ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ has an impressive line-up of Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett, Rick Yune, Dylan McDermott, Ashley Judd, Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser and Robert Forster. So with the storyline, this who’s-who of a cast they compiled, and the fact we get to see Gerard Butler kick butt like in his “300” days makes for a solid action flick! 9 out of 10!

Opening weekend we had a chance to see Mila Kunis… Ahem, we saw “Oz The Great and Powerful”. First off, I liked the fact that this adaptation of the “Wizard of Oz” story isn’t totally predictable. As opposed to following the traditional story we all know, it seems like the film followed in the direction of the stage play “Wicked”. “Oz The Great and Powerful” (directed by Sam Raimi & produced by Joe Roth) propels its audience from an old, 2nd-rate circus in Kansas to a bright, colorful, magical land. This is where we find a displaced circus magician with dubious ethics named Oscar Diggs (James Franco). Oscar thinks he has it made in this new land after befriending a monkey named Finley (Zach Braff) and a witch named Theodora (Mila Kunis) who explain his part in their prophecy to save the day and become King. But after meeting two other witches in Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams) he must quickly decipher good from evil before the land of Oz meets its grim fate and they discover he is not a real wizard. After watching the film in 2D standard I can tell you that if you see this in 3D you won’t be disappointed. A lot of their scenes you can tell, were there for the purpose of 3D excitement. I can happily give this film an 8 out of 10. The storyline was fine, the characters were casted perfectly for their roles, but some of the scenes … well they transitioned poorly. That and there were a few scenes that were extremely computer generated and kind of ruined the mood. A little CG here and there is fine and of course a lot of the characters weren’t real which is fine. But bad transitions mixed with average animation and obvious CG made for a sour taste at parts. Aside from that its a fun flick that everyone can enjoy.

“Identity Thief” directed by Seth Gordon, is a hilarious comedy starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy. Melissa McCarthy is really setting a name for herself in these comedies (if you haven’t seen “Bridesmaids” then you’re missing out) and I’m glad to see her getting more opportunities in film. Jason Bateman has been in plenty of movies but if you aren’t familiar with him, I suggest you see “Horrible Bosses” for a good laugh. I guarantee you’ll become a fan after that. “Identity Thief” is about a mild-mannered businessman named Sandy Patterson (Jason Bateman) from Denver, CO who has his identity stolen by a woman (Melissa McCarthy) in Winter Park, FL. The bulk of the story really begins after he confronts her in Florida. I also enjoyed appearances by Morris Chestnut, John Cho, and T.I. (who was hilarious by the way). According to Rotten Tomatoes only 24% of their viewers liked it, yet it was still the top grossing box office film (every time I see a good movie that gets bad reviews I think of “300″. You cannot tell any of us that “300″ didn’t changed the game and inspired the fight scenes of today and spinoffs like “Spartacus”). I would give it a 8 out of 10. It’s one of those movies where you may miss a few laughs because you’re still laughing from something before. I enjoyed the chemistry between the 2 of them (Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy) and overall it was just a funny movie. Now if you’re looking for a striking plot and a storyline that’s going to win an award of some sort, this is not the case. But if you just want to see something to laugh? This is the movie for you. When have you ever seen Melissa McCarthy and NOT laughed? Life of Pi is an amazing movie that some have even compared to Avatar. Winner of 4 Academy Awards including Best Director, Life of Pi explores religion, love, and friendship in a one of a kind adventure! In Canada, a writer visits the Indian storyteller Pi (short for Pi Patel and played by Suraj Sharma) and asks him to tell his life story. In this story Pi revisits his childhood in Pondicherry, India and starts by explaining his nickname and how it affected his upbringing. As he grows older he becomes more involved in his parents zoo, finds a girlfriend, and experiments with more than a few religions. After his parents decide to sell the zoo and relocate to Canada they board a Japanese cargo ship with their animals and not very long into their journey disaster strikes! Following a shipwreck Pi finds himself as the lone survivor, along with a zebra, orangutan, hyena, and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. This is where the true adventure begins! With award winning music and cinematography this sea adventure shows the test of survival, faith, and overcoming adversity. Once at sea there’s a beautiful light show that’s comparable to Avatar with animation and beautiful sights. I can give this a solid 9.5 out of 10. I’m very happy for director Ang Lee who won Best Picture and Best Director against a lineup of mainstream heavy hitters. It’s now available on DVD and Blu-Ray so make sure you check it out!

In what has been an amazing end to 2012 and a thrilling start to 2013, I am happy to announce our first ever perfect movie in Les Misérables! Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an amazing story of love, passion, sacrifice and redemption. Hugh Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, who’s hunted for years by the ruthless policeman Javert (Russell Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Anne Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette (Isabelle Allen), their lives change forever. All of the nominations and hoopla surrounding this film are wellearned and deservedly touted. I have never seen the play and purposely did not see it before seeing the movie because of this: Making a film version of a stage play is a tough act to follow. This is coming from an avid, and I mean borderline obsessive Phantom of the Opera fan over here who was dreadfully disappointed at the film remake (but it featured Leonidas so hey..).

From the songs, to the cast, the different settings and the storyline, this film did exactly what it should do (at least in my opinion); it inspired me to see the play! If the movie is this amazing I can only imagine what the experience would be like on Broadway or Wyndham’s Theatre in London. Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman were excellent and I think more applause should be given to Isabelle Allen and Amanda Seyfried. The Cosette’s not only looked just alike but gave an awe-inspiring performance (Side Note: This was Isabelle Allen’s first film EVER). I’d also like to give kudos to Sacha Baron Cohen for his role as Thenardier and a name to remember, Samantha Barks, who played Eponine put on an amazing performance as well. That’s right readers, a perfect 10 is the rating we must give. Anything less than that would be unjust and disrespectful to this masterpiece. Its still in select theaters because its so awesome and its numerous award recognitions but you can purchase it on DVD, Blu-Ray, and by Digital Copy as well. This is a must see!

There’s a reason why this movie received so many Golden Globe nominations! Daniel Day-Lewis won the Golden Globe for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama” for his role as Abraham Lincoln and we’re here to co-sign. Throughout the entire film you feel like you are actually watching Lincoln himself take on the tasks that burdened progress in America. In 1865, as the American Civil War winds toward conclusion, U.S. president Abraham Lincoln endeavors to achieve passage of the landmark constitutional amendment which will forever ban slavery from the United States. It’s a race against time as Lincoln aims to get the historical amendment passed before the end of the civil war and may have to make the ultimate decision to choose: Peace by ending the war or abolishing slavery. Other notable figures in this film are Sally Field as Mrs. Lincoln, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Robert Lincoln, Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens, and Bruce McGill as Edwin Stanton. We give it a solid 9 out of 10. Daniel Day-Lewis is the perfect Lincoln and the movie unveils other great stories that are overshadowed by the Civil War. If you caught the inauguration yesterday they talked a lot about how President Obama was motivated by the speeches in Lincoln. The story of Django begins with Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), a former dentist who buys the freedom of a slave, Django (Jamie Foxx) with the intent to train him and make him his deputy bounty hunter. As time goes by their work relationship grows stronger and Dr. Schultz offers to help Django find his wife if he helps him hunt down more “Wanted” criminals. The movie is the best example of “crazy” we could come up with. At times you may want to cover your eyes, cover your ears (their language may catch you off guard and definitely do not let your children see this), but more importantly you’ll laugh. All of this while immersed in a love story. That’s right, a love story. Remember, Django is on a search for his wife who was taken from him. It’s a Tarantino flick so be prepared for copious amounts of coarse language, racial humor (and humor of all sorts for that matter), and blood. Also if you’re one that’s not down for the following: Racial humor, racial slurs, lots of blood, people being killed in front of children, and seeing movies that focus on slavery, this movie may not be for you. This Western, Dixie, Comedic, Love-Story features some of Hollywood’s finest! and some were quite a surprise! Probably the biggest surprise was seeing Jonah Hill in a minor role and I only found out the night before seeing this that Samuel L. Jackson was in this movie. The thing that a lot of critics don’t say but we will (because we’re awesome like that ) is that once you discover Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson) he steals the show for a good portion of the movie. When I say it’s classic Sam Jackson at its best? There’s comedy, a patented Sam Jackson speech, and the yelling? Oh yes, what’s a Sam Jackson feature without him yelling at someone? It’s not a true feature is it? lol Django’s wife Broomhilda was played by Kerry Washington and a very well-played plantation owner named Calvin Candie was played by none other than Leonardo DiCaprio. People have been talking about this movie since its premiere, and if that’s not reason enough to go see it, see it because we suggested it. Solid 9 out of 10. If you are into crazy first person shooters, RPG shooters then this is the game for you. Borderlands 2 is a fun, crazy game, and yet hilarious. It has some very interesting characters, nice story line… well a better story line than the first one, and it has hella guns. The person who was in charge of designing guns did an awesome job, because they’ve gotten really creative, any gun you can think of… it’s in the game. The characters you have in this game are like the characters from part one. You have an Assassin, Berserker, Siren, Torrent, and a Mecromancer and they all fit in with the story line. Mainly in this Borderlands you’re trying to stop Handsome Jack form opening the Vault. You and your team members are vault hunters and you go on a lot of missions to try to prevent Handsome Jack from opening the vault. You also meet up with the members from the first Borderlands and from there, things get crazy fun. Multiplayer wise, it is a blast. You can join in on a friend’s mission, or they can join in on your mission and you can just go ham on any boss, any villain, or as they would say in the game any badass and when they say badass they really mean badass. The badasses are not to be played with because they will kick yours! Now once you beat the first play through, you are not finished. You have to play the second play through, and things are not easy from there, you will need help from a friend. The villains will get harder from there on, and you will be upgrading your weapons every now and then. Borderlands 2 is a must get , if you love first person shooters, crazy characters, unique story lines, and funny side missions then this is the game for you. I know I love it. Metal Gear Rising is like Metal Gear Solid but a few slight differences. It’s a new take on Raiden aka Jack the Ripper basically from him being a child soldier to a cyborg mercenary. In this game you get to slice up enemies, cars, trees, helicopters, buildings and whatever you would like to destroy. Mainly in this one you’re a ninja. You don’t have to be as stealthy like in Metal Gear Solid, but you can sneak up on your enemy and slice them up to pieces. In MGS series you played as Snake, you could sneak up on your enemy’s, interrogate them, choke them out, shoot them with a tranquilizer gun and hide them in a locker. Basically you’re being stealthy and trying not to get caught. Well with MGR, it’s a new take with new game play but with some of the same elements. There’s really not sneaking around unless you want to, like I mention in the begging there’s a lot of slicing and dicing. One of the elements that they kept was your ability to hide in a box or a barrel, so that you would be able to sneak up on your enemy. But like in MGS you don’t get to camouflage. Now I would say that Metal Gear Rising is pretty addictive, just because you get to slice up a lot of stuff and yet it is pretty fun, and if you beat the game faster than you expected, then you should try the VR missions. That would add some time to your gameplay and their kind of a handful as well. As for the for the story, it’s not just a typical Metal Gear story, it’s about war, peace, and some crazy lunatic with too much power trying to take over the world, but with cyborgs. At first it was kind of hard to tell if MGR took place before or after MGS4, until they showed a certain character from. While playing Metal Gear Rising, I got the feeling that I was playing Beyanetta, another awesome game. I give Metal Gear Rising a 7.9. Atlanta Jewish Film Festival We are very excited to share the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival with you! This grand event took place Wednesday, January 30th, 2013 at the Cobb Energy Centre. The opening night gala kicked off with a red carpet VIP reception that led to a luscious array of dining options for the evening. A total of 11 restaurants and their respective chefs were represented that evening providing their own specialty dish to serve patrons for the evening. To name a few: Chef Marlyn Dobbs of Aja, Chef Chad Clevenger of Alma Cocina, Chef Gary Donlick of Bistro Niko, and Cobb Energy’s own Chef MG Farris were all in attendance preparing everything for Devil’s Tail Redfish to Spinach and Lamb Roulade! Whilst savoring every bit of these culinary masterpieces we continued into the lobby where the silent auction was held. Auction items included a Ritz-Carlton Buckhead Deluxe Weekend Stay for 2, TCM Classic Film Festival passes in Hollywood, an 8 day stay at Ted Turner’s West Virginia home for 8 people, Davio’s dinner for 6 w/wine pairings, and 2 tickets to the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards with Airfare and Hotel! There were some serious items up for auction that night! After a few hours of mixed drinks, mingling, and plenty of food we moved into the auditorium for a special screening of the film “Hava Nagila”, directed by Roberta Grossman. “Hava Nagila” traces the cultural impact of the Hebrew folk song that transcended its origins to become one of the most recognizable songs in the world. The film features appearances by familiar faces Leonard Nimoy and Harry Belafonte and travels deep into Eastern Europe and around the globe to discover the true beginnings of this memorable tune. “Hava Nagila” meaning “let us rejoice,” was an entertaining film that digs deep in both cultural and musical history. It’s the type of film where you can leave feeling more informed and empowered than before you arrived. Because of this film we know the relevance of the song and dance in Jewish culture as well as why the song means so much. As of 5pm the evening before the opening ceremonies, the AJFF announced they had sold more than 30,000 tickets to the 2013 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival! What an accomplishment and a huge congratulations to the AJFF and the Atlanta Jewish Committee (AJC)! The entire festival was well organized and you can tell a lot of work went into every event, venue, and movie screening. Speaking of which did we mention this top notch festival screened at top notch theaters? Cobb Energy Centre, Regal Cinemas Atlantic Station, Lefont Theaters, Georgia Theatre Company at Merchants Walk, United Artists Tara Cinemas 4, and Regal Cinemas North Point Market played host to numerous screenings throughout the festival. There were so many films to choose from but we ended up seeing the following: Blinky & Me, Koch, and Le Chat du Rabbin (The Rabbi’s Cat). Overall, this was an absolutely amazing festival. We were shocked by the amount of volunteers they had happily helping patrons with their every need and how many films they had. It was a great experience and we will be returning next year for sure! Here’s what 4-time AJFF attendee Anan Stillman had to say: “Regardless of your background, ethnicity, or heritage, anyone who loves cinema would appreciate and enjoy the offering that they have because of the diversity. Blinky & Me “Blinky & Me” is a wonderful film documenting the life of animator Yoram Gross. Perhaps youʼve seen one of his amazing cartoons as a child? His most famous of which would be the cuddly Koala character known as Blinky Bill. “Blinky & Me”, a film directed by Tomasz Magierski, is just one of many amazing movies screened at the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. We traveled to Atlantic Stationsʼ Regal Cinemas for this screening (and what a venue choice). Before the film began we heard a few words from Emory Universityʼs Dr. Eddy Von Mueller, a professor of Film Studies. As he was explaining the art of animation and its impact he said one key phrase that resonated with me for the rest of the film: “What you see in a cartoon comes from a part of the directorsʼ life.” He continued speaking but that short quote had me thinking for a few minutes even into the start of the film. (Remember this quote). Being a WWII survivor Yoram Gross tells his grandchildren many stories of survival, adventure, and how he came to animation. It was great to see grandchildren so young, so enthused, so excited, about learning the history of their grandfather. Gross is originally from Poland (currently residing in Australia) and wanted his family to know his roots and where he came from. So most of the film takes place in Poland, showing his family where he used to live, the many trades he and his family picked up, and tales of love, escape, and friendship. There are so many amazing stories told by Gross in this heavily informative documentary. The one thing Iʼll mention is a moment when Dr. Muellerʼs quote came full circle. Yoram was telling his grandchildren about a time when he and his mother were separated and he had no idea where she had gone. The film cut to an episode of Blinky Bill (which I remember oddly enough) where Blinky begins to cry and says “my mama.... I canʼt find my mama!” I find moments like this amazing when everything comes together exactly how it was explained. Again I donʼt want to give away too much but the stories Yoram gives in such detail at his age are absolutely incredible. Itʼs a film about his life as much as it is history in 1st person detail. Koch To continue with the excitement of the AJFF we joined a packed house for the first screening of “Koch“. It was a wonderful documentary about the colorful former Mayor Ed Koch, who recently passed away (oddly enough, the day before the movie was released). The film (directed by Neil Barsky) captured his rise and fall in the city of New York and showed the many positive results that came from his decisions (the biggest of which was his impact on real estate). You get to see a man who often times was misunderstood and inappropriately mislabeled. One man even goes on record to say, “I wouldn’t call Ed Koch a racist. He’s worst than a racist….. He’s an opportunist,” to which the crowd laughed. It was a very informative documentary which gives you the opportunity to learn about him in a different light, the reasoning behind the decisions that were made, and how his Jewish faith guided him in office and his personal life. We give condolences and a fond farewell to one of New York’s finest. No longer will he need to ask “how am I doing?” For we know he did just fine. 9 out of 10, great film, full of life and laughs!

Le Chat Du Rabbin The Peach Review®

As the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival slips into its final days we wanted to share with you another film we say by the name of “Le Chat Du Rabbin” (“The Rabbi’s Cat”). This 3D animated adventure is set in the 1930s in Algiers, Algeria. Rabbi Sfar has more than a few problems to deal with. His young daughter Zlabya seemingly leap-frogged from childhood to a teenager, he has recently been asked to take an exam in French to continue being a rabbi, and above all his parrot-eating cat just gained the ability to speak. His Cat who has a love affair with Zlabya (and actually belongs to his daughter even though he follows the rabbi) keeps plenty of humor floating in the film and has many questions in the film. His most noted wish was “why can’t I have a bat mitzvah?” Rabbi Sfar has a rabbi over him as well, and when his cat got a hold of him he pressed the issue even further, “You say I can’t have a bat mitzvah because I’m a cat and not human? That God made you in his image? Well then can you show me a picture of God?” The story brings about more excitement and adventure as their cousin Lion Malka comes to visit, the rabbi’s cat helps him study for his french exam, and they receive a box filled with jewish books from Russia along with a young boy! This sequence of events leads to the discovery of new friends, important discussions and contrasts on religion, and a much-needed adventure. The Cat (who stays nameless in the film) is hilarious with his quick wit and smart responses to things. I was impressed that the film was screened in 3D and they did a pretty fair job with it. The style of animation gives it a century old feeling so it wouldn’t be appropriate to have objects flying at your face but it does give the artwork a nice complement. “The Rabbi’s Cat,” directed by Joann Sfar, is entertaining as well as educational which is why I can give this a 9 out of 10.

This 10-day event came just a few days after another film festival you read about, and put Atlanta on complete Film Festival overload! Producers, directors, actors, and movies everywhere the eye could see. This film festival ran from March 15th to the 24th. The Atlanta Film Festival provides a unique opportunity for audiences to explore international and independent cinema through interaction with filmmakers, their films and film industry professionals through this event. One of the cool things about the Atlanta Film Festival (AFF) is that they are one of a dozen film festivals that are Academy Award速 qualifying festivals. 7 Stages and Plaza Theatre played host to many of the films this year, and along with film screenings the AFF has included a hefty load of workshops for the public. Everything from acting support, animation support, comedy, directing and more. After taking a careful look at all of the films available we decided to review the following: Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp, Venus & Serena, and Congratulations. Be sure to visit their website regularly to keep up to date on the goings-on in film around the city. Like the 365 in their name suggests, they have events and screenings going on year-round.

Iceberg Slim Portrait of a Pimp Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp was the first movie I saw in our AFF13 lineup. The film (directed by Jorge Hinojosa) examines the life of a young man from Chicago who haphazardly stumbles into pimping. In this eye-opening documentary you discover his rocky relationship with his mother (because of her bad choices in men and other things), what led him to pimping, and even the fact that he was a scholar. There’s a clip of him saying “do you think convincing a woman to perform an act and give you the money while keeping control of her mind is easy?” explaining that he didn’t know of any pimp that was ignorant or unintelligent. He himself graduated from high school with a 98% average but soon discovered in college that it wasn’t the proper environment for him. He soon found himself bootlegging and selling around campus and was kicked out soon after. The most amazing part of this documentary is the turning point in his life. When he admits “as a young man you never plan for getting old. Then you go to jail here and there and life passes you by and then you’re old.” He had to find a different way to make money and that’s where his second career came into play. Iceberg Slim went on from street hustling to crafting a new life for himself as an author. With support from his wife, the duo began to submit his excerpts to papers and other news outlets around L.A. until one day he landed a deal. He later wrote 7 groundbreaking books which opened the doors to a new genre of street literature.

His life story and experiences were detailed in these books and made him to be a cultural icon. The film includes interviews with Chris Rock, Henry Rollins, Snoop Lion, Quincy Jones, Ice-T, and many more. After watching the screening and listening to the Q&A afterwards with Jorge Hinojosa, the entire experience really inspires you to want to read all of his books. It was also good to see that Baby and Slim of Ca$h Money Records bought the rights to his books and made sure Iceberg’s family were receiving the royalties they deserved. Great film, 9 out of 10! Congratulations

This was my first time attending a film festival to review a movie. The atmosphere of the Plaza Theatre made me nostalgic for the times before streaming and On Demand. The time when going to the movies didn't cost $100 for a family of four. The theatre is the oldest operating cinema in Atlanta and the poster's of classic movies on the walls was pretty cool to me. There was a red carpet and the step and repeat set up made me feel like I was at a premiere. The movie Congratulations! is a new movie from the Atlanta production team Fake Wood Wallpaper. The filmmakers raised money for the movie by receiving donations from supporters on Indiegogo.com. Anyone who can make their dream a reality this way automatically gains my respect. The theatre for this screening was completely full. The film is about a young boy, Paul Ryan Gray, who goes missing in his own home. Detective Dan Skok and his men move into the house to help find the boy. They spend most of the movie searching in the same places in the house and in the backyard. They post bright yellow missing posters over every inch of the house and continue to look for clues. Mrs. Gray is stuck in a moment of despair over her missing son. She begins zoning out and repeatedly acting out her steps of the day he went missing. The detective becomes strangely attached to the family and causes and awkward living situation for everyone. The movie is a unique comedy that reminds me of a mix between Naked Gun series, First 48, and a random movie I would find on the Indie list of Netflix. I was mostly intrigued by the way the movie was filmed and the thought of the intense set production. The film's cast and crew were there for a Q&A session afterwards which is always something I enjoy. It was nice to see the support of the film had at opening night. Venus & Serena

The last movie The Peach Review® covered was about Tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams. This feature documentary/movie titled Venus and Serena delves deep into their lives both on and off the tennis court. This film is presented by Magnolia Pictures, written by Michelle Major, directed by Major and Maiken Baird. Many know the Williams sisters as AfricanAmerican tennis players, icons, rivals, grand slam champions and sisters. However, Major and Baird show through this film that there is more to them than meets the eyes. Yes, even more than being black female athletes in sports. Both girls have created successful careers off the tennis court in fashion, design and entertainment to name a few. This film really shows the love between the two sisters for their God, family, friends, tennis, life and overcoming obstacles to reach their goals. Through 2010 and 2011 both sisters had health issues that put their careers on hold and almost ended it to be quite honest. Serena cut her foot which led to her suffering a pulmonary embolism while Venus, who was suffering from fatigue was diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome. Despite, those obstacles the sisters overcame and dealt with them to surge to continue success on and off the tennis court.

It was interesting to know that their parents Richard and Oracene developed a 78 page plan on their daughter’s Venus’s life prior to her birth. The plan was all about making her a tennis champion. Serena calls her dad the body of the family, while her mom is the spine. The parents made sacrifices to make the dream come true and were not concerned that they lived in Compton, California. It shows what a family can do when they stay focused on the goal. This movie also shows what led to the parents getting divorced while revealing the many children that Richard has. This is a great film that shows so many sides of the Williams sisters and how they have dealt with: 1. Being professional female athletes the over 15 years 2. Death of their sister Yetunde 3. Dating / Relationships 4. Role model pressures 5. Business Ventures

On a beautiful Saturday in Atlanta, the extremely talented DeShai Cole of “Grown Woman Talk Entertainment” presented us with her very first “Ultimate Girls Festival” here in Atlanta! Honored to be able to be apart of this event, I must say that it was nothing short of amazing! The festivities began that morning at the Marriott Buckhead Hotel where DeShai and guests including, actor Lance Gross, lifestyle specialist Kenny Burns, co-host of the Rickey Smiley show Ebony Steele, celebrity hair stylist Gocha, celeb publicist April Love, and fitness and lifestyle specialist JackieRed, provided women with tons of useful info that could be put to use on a daily! Following the first half of the Ultimate Girls Festival everyone made their way down to Harlem Nights Ultra Lounge located in downtown Atlanta where the ladies continued to be pampered and treated like royalty for the remainder of the night. The evening was filled with tons of entertainment from various artists and live performances by Ms. Kandi Burress and Ms. Sunshine Anderson (who both by the way, looked amazing!). Also performing snippets of their new work, we had rapper Rasheeda and singer Tocarra Hamilton, Meme Jones, and last but not least, the one and only, host of the night, concluded the night by performing one of her own pieces that blew me and the crowd away. This grown and sexy, yet sophisticated party was definitely one to remember.

Overall Atlanta’s first “Ultimate Girls Festival,” hosted by the lovely DeShai Cole was ultimately a success! She did her thing, and most definitely made it happen for the ladies that were in attendance! Without a doubt The Peach Review® will be in tune with Mrs. Cole keeping our ears and eyes open for what’s next! After meeting Mrs. DeShai Cole and getting a feel of what she represents, i like to think of her as a “Jack of All Trades!” She’s a young, vibrant, and beautiful woman! Seems as if she takes pride in what she does, she’s making major power moves while motivating and empowering other women of all ages. She’s a radio host, actress, singer, writer, wife and mother! “AIAS is a great event for the entire family and its only $10 per adult” The 31st annual Atlanta International Auto Show took place from March 13-17th here in Atlanta at the Georgia World Congress Center. Here we were able to see lots of 2014’s by everyone from Kia to Infiniti. The AIAS is a great event for the entire family and its easy on the pockets (the cost was $10 for adults and kids got in free). Chrysler came out with a nice lineup and friendly people. As you can see above we have a promo model who told us everything there was to know about the new Chrysler 300. Did you know there are more than 10 different 300 models to choose from? The one above is the “Motown” edition and they had others there with custom rims, beats by dre sound systems, and limited edition interior setups.

They had music playing so loud you thought you were at a nightclub, life-size cutouts of the hamsters from their commercials, and plenty of fun people to help with any questions about their cars. They even had a virtual reality race car simulator for people to feel what it would be like racing a Kia on the track! Going 31 years strong the AIAS is a fun, familyfriendly event that’s not overly costly and lots of fun. One of the cool things about this event is it starts in the middle of the week if you want to dodge weekend crowds and it’s not too big that parking becomes a hassle. There was plenty of parking and the show was even accessible by Marta.

Another major presence that was felt was by Kia We’ll be attending this event next year and hope to Motors. Now some of you may recognize this artist Marian Mereba. We featured her in a past edition but we decided to bring her back because of her new release Room For Living EP. The entire 10 track collection gets a thumbs up from me. Her voice is so soothing and everything you hear is original. If you ever wondered what magic could be made from a simple guitar and a commanding voice, this is what you need to hear! Most of the songs have a love and loss type of vibe to them but not all of them are sad. You can

feel a loss but look on the bright side. Showing the brighter side of love and its challenges, these are the emotions you can feel in her lyrics and her music. An immediate classic “Go to London” immediately got my attention. Once she released that on Soundcloud I new she had to have a line-up of quality coming our way in the future, and boy was I right!. I really love all the tracks but if I had to pick a favorite, the album closes with a track called “Blue for Mr. Green”. That song stayed on repeat for a few days to be honest. Some other fun tracks

are “Chasing the Moon” and “Wandering Hands.” If you have the opportunity to see her perform live you need to do so. As time goes by and she delivers more quality music I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about her. J. ALEXANDER’S To all of our food lovers out there! We present to you reviews from these restaurants: J. Alexander’s and Which Wich. J. Alexander’s is a contemporary American restaurant known for its wood-fired cuisine. Each restaurant has a varied and rotating selection of features from Seafood Czarina to Chicken Milanese. They also have a full service bar and an outstanding selection of wine. Their 2 locations, Dunwoody and Peachtree Parkway, offer a subtle type of exclusivity which I enjoy. It’s an amazing restaurant with kind staff and even better management. Around town I often hear people confuse it with Houston’s (and I think a lot of that has to do with them taking over an old Houston’s location in Dunwoody) but trust when I say they are very different. I love their philosophy when it comes to taking care of their patrons. You may have a “waiter/waitress” but the entire staff works as a team. So person “A” may take your order but your appetizers might get delivered by person “B” while person “C” refills your drink and person “D” brings you your dessert. All with a smile on top of that, to create a very unique dining experience!

sandwich with fries. The Hyde Park is the best grilled chicken sandwich I’ve ever tasted. Grilled chicken breast layered in melted monterrey jack cheese, it’s delicious! Pictured right is the Fever Tree ginger ale I had ordered. Normally I get a very sweet tasting fresh lemonade but I decided to try something new (because lemonade is my natural default choice here). As I stated in the introduction, Andrea took my order but another young lady brought my ginger ale and a young man was the lucky one to deliver my savory chicken delight! The Hyde Park is a big chicken sandwich pictured right, with fries towering beside it. The price point here is reasonable. It’s a step above average I’d say, but the food portions are commensurate with the price you’re paying so I have no problem with it. As a matter of fact I think its excellent. Which Wich Superior Sandwiches Which Wich Superior Sandwiches is a restaurant where you can create your hearts desires in a sandwich. They offer over 50 customizable “wiches” with plenty of options to choose from. They offer various meats

The nice thing about Which Wich is that their sandwiches are filling. Not just delicious, but filling and delicious. This day I tried the Club Wich (ham, turkey, and bacon) on 7” wheat bread. The combo comes with chips and a drink (I chose Sun Chips “original” and lemonade). They have a variety of sides and normally I would get a Wich Krispie (their version of a Rice Krispies square) but they were sold out this day! You have the option of toasting your sandwich (which I did) and it came out to be a mouthwatering, delicious collaboration of meats and bread!

This Superior Sandwich shoppe is located in Midtown’s booming Atlantic Station on the main level where the row of restaurants begins. If you remember in our last issue we reviewed BGR Burger Joint? It sits directly across from them, next to the escalator. So now the only question is which wich is which? (I couldn’t help myself)

After you place your order you can stand by the pickup area or sit down and watch one of their flat-screen TV’s until your name is called. That name by the way can be anything you write down. You order by filling out a sandwich bag (pictured above) and they prepare it according to the bubbles you’ve filled in. Now as you can see I filled out my sandwich options above but what you can’t see is the name I filled in below. Since they announce whatever name you choose to fill in I’m sure you can only imagine the fun that can come from this. I myself have been Batman, Manwich Eater, and Christoph (hey why not?).

Price-wise its very reasonable being just a step above a “eat fresh” competitor. Which Wich is an example of product over price, because I’ve eaten at many sandwich shoppes but Which Wich is by far the best tasting. They may not be the cheapest but their quality is what stands out, along with the fact I have never left hungry. They have 11 locations in the Atlanta area and are definitely worth the visit. Best sandwich we’ve had thus far, they’ve set the standard, 10 out of 10.

Ruzzle™ This mobile app is very addictive, it’s so addictive that it’s possible to get everyone in a restaurant to sit there and play it and all you will hear is the chimes, buzzers, and players getting really excited over the game (yes this actually happened). Ruzzle is like Scrabble but better, in which you have 2 minutes to find as many words as possible and you are not limited on the words you find either. It is ridiculous on how addicting this game is and how many words you can find. I’ve been playing since day one and I still don’t know how it’s possible to find 326 words. It’s a brain tester, but the longer you play the better you may become. Ruzzle is available on iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone devices. Instagram Just in case there are people who haven’t heard or aren’t familiar with this app, Instagram is a fast, fun way to share your photos with everyone around you. Take a picture, choose a filter to change its look and feel, then post it to Instagram. Within the App you can share it on other platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr. Or you can just post the link to your picture where you would like. Instagram has come a long way from just a native iPhone application. They once caught a lot of heat from Apple addicts when they expanded to Android devices. Then the public caught note of their billion dollar acquisition by Facebook, and their most recent lash-back came after they changed their “Terms of Service” policy. The latter of which I can understand why they did because the terms hadn’t changed since the app was launched. That’s a difference of a few hundred thousand people to the now 100 million monthly users. But with all things time heals all wounds and Instagram is still the most popular photo app to date. If you haven’t already tried it you should. Take a photo, add a filter to give it a new look, then post it. But don’t just post it, add a “hash tag” so others can see it, like “#landscape #sunset #racecar #poodle” that way when people conduct a search others around the world will be able to see your photos! It also has a photo map, so if you tag your pictures location it’ll remember where you took it (geographically). You can find friends within the App by doing a “Address Book search,” “Facebook Search,” or inviting them via email or text message. Instagram is here to stay and whether you enjoy looking at pictures or taking them, Instagram (IG) is a must!
