Discovered in 1771 at the bottom of a lake at Hadrian's Villa near Tivoli, Italy. The villa, built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, was a sprawling complex of palaces, gardens, and baths. The vase was found in fragments, buried under centuries of silt and debris. Sir William Hamilton, a British diplomat and antiquarian stationed in Naples, acquired the fragments and later sold them to his nephew, George Greville, the 2nd Earl of Warwick. Greville, an avid art collector, had the vase meticulously restored by the sculptor James Byres in Rome. The reconstruction brought the vase back to its original grandeur, with its intricate carvings of Bacchic scenes—depicting Bacchus (Dionysus), the god of wine, and his followers. The Warwick Vase gained considerable fame in the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming a symbol of classical antiquity and aristocratic taste. Its design was widely admired and replicated in various forms, including smaller vases, silverware, and even as motifs in furniture and ceramics. The vase’s influence extended beyond Europe, inspiring neoclassical designs in America as well. In the early 20th century, due to financial difficulties, the Greville family sold the Warwick Vase. It was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, but the British government intervened to keep the vase in the United Kingdom. Eventually, it was bought by the Scottish National Gallery, where it remains today. The Warwick Vase is now housed at the Burrell Collection in Glasgow.

Attributed to Sir William Ross R.A (British, 1794-1860)
A pair of portraits of the young Queen Victoria and Prince Albert Watercolour Unsigned Each approximately 11cm x 8cm (2) Provenance: The Estate of Cherry Barker. Sir William Charles Ross (1794-1860) was a distinguished British artist particularly renowned for his miniature portraits, which captivated the 19thcentury art world. Born in London, Ross displayed a prodigious talent from a young age, studying at the Royal Academy schools. His early work included larger historical and genre paintings, but he soon found his niche in portrait miniatures, a genre that brought him significant acclaim. Ross's career blossomed in the 1820s when he began to secure commissions from British nobility and royalty. His ability to capture the delicate features and refined elegance of his subjects earned him widespread recognition. In 1837, his reputation was solidified when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert commissioned him to create numerous miniature portraits of their family, establishing Ross as a favoured artist of the royal household. Throughout his career, Ross exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, where his works were lauded for their meticulous detail, vibrant coloration, and the lifelike presence of the sitters. His skill in rendering texture and fabric, combined with an acute sensitivity to his subjects' expressions, set him apart from his contemporaries. In 1842, Ross was appointed as a member of the Royal Academy and continued to work prolifically, receiving commissions from prominent figures across Europe.

122 Countess Nora Purtscher-Wydenbruck (b.1894) Still Life with Pineapple and Fruit in Glass Bowl Ink and watercolour 32cm x 41cm and 31cm x 40cm, overall sizes 50cm x 60cm. (2) Provenance: Exhbited London 1930 With a clipping from The Times pasted to the reverse of one picture mentioning the two works offered above: THE TIMES, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1930 "Countess Wydenbruck is a very versatile artist, feeling intensely and expressing herself with vigour. Most of her paintings are of Irish landscapes, in which the ancient richness of the vegetation is fully realised. In The Lough Derg, Castle MacGarrett with dark reflections in the water, is an impressive composition, and there are some paintings of luxuriant Irish gardens. But perhaps the paintings which more fully express the personality of the artist are the Flowers and Fruit, which approximate in their forms to the very spirit of the Austrian Baroque. Still more impressive is her Fruit in Glass Bowl, an excellent drawing in black and white, and there are further evidences of versatility in a gros point tapestry of a hunting subject and monotype prints in colour from wood blocks. What impresses in the work of both artists is the fine adaptation of style and the success of execution to a romantic impulse. Everything is done with pace and energy".

175 Description A patinated bronze German WWI propaganda medal for the sinking of the Lusitania by Karl Goetz, dated 5 May 1915 5.5cm diameter. In August 1915, German artist Karl Goetz cast a commemorative medal depicting the May 7, 1915 sinking of the Lusitania. He intended it to be a metallic political cartoon, but it became a propaganda tool. On one side the Lusitania was shown sinking by its stern (it sunk bow first) with artillery pieces and airplanes on the deck. The caption translates as 'No Contraband Goods – The Liner Lusitania Sunk by a German Submarine – 5 May 1915'. The reverse shows a skeleton selling tickets to long lines of unwary passengers, the caption translates as 'Business Above All. A newspaper headline warns: UBoat Danger. It was the May 5 date on the medal that verified to the British that the Germans pre-meditated the sinking, a cowardly act. In fact, artist Goetz simply got the date wrong from using an erroneous newspaper report. About 430 medals of the first version with the May 5 date were minted in Goetz’s home. He soon corrected the date to May 7, which is the Goetz-minted coin in the War at Sea exhibit case in the Main Gallery at the Museum and Memorial. Apparently there were between 41 to 45 medals of this version made.

Royalty for the portion of the hammer price (in Euros):
4% up to 50,000
3% between 50,000.01 and 200,000
1% between 200,000.01 and 350,000
0.50% between 350,000.01 and 500,000
over 500,000 the lower of 0.25% and 12,500 euro
We will calculate the artist’s resale royalty using the Euro to GBP£ rate of exchange of the European Central Bank on the day of the auction.
18. Each seller warrants that they are the legal owner of the lot and/or have the unencumbered right to sell the lot at auction and to pass title to the successful bidder. The seller shall not be liable in the event of breach of this warranty for any amount greater than the hammer price of the lot in question.
