SENIOR WILLS

The Pen Newspaper’s seniors give their final goodbyes to the 2023-24 newspaper staff

I, Audrey Lin, will Nomundari and McKenna, our beautiful and endlessly talented 2023-2024 EICs, a year of smooth sailing. Nomi, your ability to tackle fifty million things at once has always left me awestruck and I am sure you can take on anything the world throws at you. I will you an Ivy League acceptance and an abundance of Kpop y/n moments. McKenna, witnessing your compassion and good humor inspired me to be a better person and I am going to miss riding shotgun in your car as you vibe to 2010s pop songs. I will you a straightforward path as you go on to accomplish all you hope for. To Josie, I will a year of growth and self-discovery. To Alena, I will writers that respond quickly and an AP Lang class that does not make you want to commit homicide. To Zahra, I will more time in the universe (as impossible as that might be) for you to dominate your many academic and creative pursuits. To Juliette, my baby sister and bestest friend…I love you more than any other person in the world and I am sure you already know that. I will you banger layouts and relatively low levels of stress. To Tessa, I will another year of carrying The Pen. To Sivan, I will many fantastic books and a long career on the Newspaper staff. Brian and Lynn, your combined artistic supremacy is unmatched. Brian, I will you clear-headedness and to Lynn, I will an Apple Pencil that does not break or get stolen. To Kylie, I will a steady income and cute boys. Sakura, I will you a calm artistic life that is free of arbitrary deadlines and last-minute assignments. To Shai, I will amazing opportunities wherever you go. Jihee, post more on your art account so I can cry over the pretty girls you draw. I will you less 3 a.m. gaming sessions for your health and sanity. Jeremy Kim, thank you for being my rock and putting up with all my breakdowns and flights of fancy, I could not have asked for a better co-EIC. I will you a lucrative academic career and in the distant future, many many years of comfortable house-husbandry. JJ! I do not have enough words in my English arsenal to describe how much your presence and support has meant to me these past two years. You are my #1 role model and I could only dream of one day being as cool as you. To you, I will a lifetime of good health and joy and blissfully uneventful teaching.

I, Jeremy Kim, will Nomi and McKenna, our future EICS, a stress-free year of on-time articles, quick Pasteups and unproblematic staff members. McKenna, thanks to you, your section was never once a cause for concern, and I know these leadership skills will translate as EIC. Nomi, though I don’t know how you balance everything, I do know that being EIC will be just another challenge you successfully tackle. To Juliette, I will sanity, more sleep and the energy to say “hi” to people with more pop than you do to me. To Alena, I will a new person for you to steal lunch money from and that you slay in calculus (did I do that right?). To Zahra, I will the continued brain power that made you my favorite ever writer. To Josie, I will that you never lose the audacity and inquisitiveness that made you question my trips to the bathroom. To Brandon, I will a new outlet for you to forcefully yet elegantly argue your opinions and that you continue being my favorite smartie. To my boy Jihoon, I will that Son has a bounce-back season next year. To Audrey, I will for you to continue having the mental and physical capacity to write poems that are beyond my comprehension, finish a new show every two days and constantly scream with your sister. Thank you for covering up for my weaknesses so well as my co-EIC. To Kylie, I will the entrepreneurial capabilities to bring in a stream of income for Newspaper. To Brian and Lynn, I will a harmonious partnership and many more beautiful graphics. Brian, here’s to many more hugs and to you being able to bench 225 by the end of your senior year. Lynn, as thanks for bailing us out so often with emergency graphics, imagine me giving you my best two-handed wave. To Sakura, Shai, Hana and Jihee, I will an exciting college experience with as much artsy fun as your hearts desire. Sakura, thank you for the beautiful covers. Shai, thank you for keeping Graphics a well-oiled machine. Finally, to JJ, I will many more hydrangeas and all the health and happiness to you and your family. Everything you do for your students and your family is truly incredible and I hope you know how much we admire you for it. And of course, thank you so much for putting up with the shenanigans of H52.

I, Shai Becker, will Lynn Takahashi and Brian Wang to create beautiful designs, have a full graphic team of capable driven artists and no technical issues. You are both extremely talented and will thrive in your roles. To Sakura Sasaki, my co, I will you to have the best time at UCSD and in your future artistic endeavors. You are one of the sweetest, most talented people I know and am confident that you will succeed wherever your future takes you. To this year’s leadership team, I will you a relaxing summer and the best in your respective futures. To next year’s leadership team, I will you smooth sailing and beautiful issues. To JJ, I will a strong, organized, full and talented staff for next year. Thank you to everyone I have met on the staff during my last four years for making this an incredible journey.

I, Jihee Seo, will for Brian and Lynn amazing and appealing graphics with more interactive and engaging meetups with the future graphics team. Thank you to JJ, Shai, Sakura, Audrey and Jeremy for all the hard work they put into making our issues look awesome.

I, Hana Fujii, will Zahra Habib a memorable and successful editor experience in the next two years. Every time I received your creative graphic request from you, excitement bubbled up inside of me. Kiara Lee, I cannot thank you enough for being my best graphics buddy. I will miss our iPads that never got properly charged. Please let me know if you find out the mystery. Thank you to JJ and everyone for being supportive. H52 will always stay in my heart. The time has come to close my unforgettable three years at “The Pen” newspaper... and start a “new” spaper in college.

I, Brandon Zhang, will next year’s staff the most scintillating stories, beautiful layouts, creative titles and all the best in their future endeavors. I hope that next year’s writers will do their subjects justice with their writing, representing the facts and details of their stories to the best of their ability and, most importantly, remembering to not use Oxford commas. I will my editor, Zahra, a successful year as Student Life editor, and in anything else she wishes to pursue. I want to thank Jeremy, Audrey, Nomi and JJ for the countless hours of hard work they put in this year. I deeply appreciate the opportunity they gave me to join the staff, even as a senior. I only regret not having joined The Pen during my freshman year. It has been a lot of fun writing opinions this year, I hope to be able to pursue similar activities in my future.

I, Sakura Sasaki, will Brian Wang and Lynn Takahashi new, eager graphics members that send their illustrations on time, early graphic requests with helpful explanations and reference pictures, and files that will actually send on gmail. To the new leadership, I will creative graphics that people will stop to stare at and smooth Pasteup days. To Shai Becker, my newspaper (and Comp Sci) partner, I will a lively college life and a MacBook that doesn’t die in two seconds. To JJ, I will a passionate staff and a paper that continues to grow in spectacular ways. To Jeremy and Audrey, thank you for leading another great year, full of beautiful cover requests. Thank you to The Pen for everything it has taught me these past three years!
