Senior Wills
The Pen Newspaper’s seniors say goodbye to the members of the 2017-18 newspaper staff.
I, ZOE WILLOUGHBY, will Nina, Emily and Alison a year of early post paste-ups, an endless supply of red (or purple) pens, quality pitches for Storyboard and amazing investigative articles that ruffle people’s feathers. You all are so talented and passionate about newspaper, and there is no group of people I trust more to make our publication exceptional. I will Ana and Rianne countless Disneyland trips (without anyone calling you out for using your FastPasses incorrectly), the correct pronunciation of “pica” and hopefully one or two special editions so you can finally work together. To Olin, I will a News section with hard-hitting articles and the power to make a difference in our school and community. To Liana, I will a healthy life for Maurice, a bomb Opinion section, a fun and healthy senior prom and a year of peanut butter and jelly bagels. To Anne, I will interesting sports articles without “synergy” or “clinching the win” and hopefully a win for Peninsula against PV in the football game so we have a great sports topic for the front cover. To JungIn, I will endless theme song remixes and the power of Google so you don’t end up confusing Kwanzaa and Hanukkah again. To Chris (Tris), I will a long marriage to Kanna Hashimoto, a year of less procrastination and all the UCLA paraphernalia I can find. To Sung Gyung, I will late-night random Reddit rabbit holes to fall down and a year without me snoring too loudly. To Stella, I will all the half-hour Vine compilations out there, the power to get through one Duolingo language, Nextdoor juice, the comedic stylings of John Mulaney and the never-ending power of inspirational quotes. To Phoebe, I will the strength to quit eating chips once and for all, an exciting summer road trip, many memories of failed cooking experiences, celebrity crushes and late-night gossip sessions and an amazing next year in Atlanta filled with new opportunities and hopefully no bubs to take my spot. I couldn’t have asked for a better person to spend the last 13 years with and I don’t know how I’m going to make it through four months without you. To the 2018-19 staff, I will a fun and memorable convention in Chicago with a functional chocolate shop and no food poisoning. Last but not least I will JJ many hardworking and dedicated staffs to come, poke bowls for lunch, paste ups without emergency-status articles, our hidden love of oxford commas and the strength to be not just the adviser but also the mother of both publications and the person to whom I can always come to for advice. Thank you to everyone over the past four years for making this experience unforgettable, and I will to everyone else the love I have for our newspaper.
I, Christopher Chien, will JJ many more years of quality issues, quirky but wonderful staff members and all my appreciation for the tremendous amount of work you put in to make The Pen happen. To my former opinion and sports writers, I will a one-month free trial of InDesign during tryout season, as well as my best wishes to you all (and to my fellow Chris, I will my blessings in your future marriage to Kanna Hashimoto). I will Nina, Emily and Alison a long list of music that must be played at all paste-ups moving forward, now that you’ll be leading H52 to even greater heights—seriously, check your emails later. To Zoe and Ana, I will my undying love of macaroni and cheese, and to Stella, my undying love of Anthony Fantano. I will to Phoebe and Jordan endless snarky insults, moderate disdain for indie rock and disappointment that the Comic Sans April Fool’s issue never happened. To Rianne, my co-editor and partner-in-crime who I obviously carried to the end of this year, I will my unintuitive InDesign tricks, hours of cropping pictures of people at weird angles and eventual appreciation of adorable puppies. In all seriousness though, all of you have made my time on staff amazing, memorable, exciting, chaotic and everything in between. Thanks for helping me learn from my mistakes and grow from our experiences, and if you all ever need anything, whether it be guidance in school, life advice or someone to show you around in Pennsylvania, you know where to find me.
I, Jenna Yamada, would like to will my Weirdo of the Year award to H52 for the next weirdo to follow in my footsteps. Thank you.
I, Stella Yoo, will Nina Li, Emily McGinn and Alison Kim an amazing year leading The Pen. I have no doubts that all of your complementary strengths will bring the paper to new heights. To JJ, I will you everlasting sanity to continue advising the insanity that is publications and a happy future filled with essential oils. Thank you for all of your support and patience this year. To Liana Korotzer, I will you the very power to git and I pray that half of your prom night will not be spent on the bathroom floor next year. Thanks for all the laughs and I am truly going to miss your ridiculousness. To Christopher Guanzing, I will you Kanna Hashimoto’s love and the ability to send me daily photos of Nala. To Momoka Sasaki, I will you another amazing year in publications as a Head Photographer and gallons of sunscreen to prevent your world-famous sock tan. May every satsuma orange you come across in life metamorphose into a Phanny’s burrito the second you lay eyes on it. To Ana Willoughby, I will you hours of vine compilations and all the money in the world to fuel your sticker obsession. To Phoebe Borsum, I will you an amazing four years at Emory– “awesome place”– as you learn how to become the coolest nurse the nurse world has ever seen. To Zoe Willoughby, I will you an endless amount of John Mulaney specials, Queer Eye episodes and an okay life at UCLA. Please also teach me how to stop mumbling when you get your Linguistics degree. I am desperate. Try your best not to Bruin your life and, as always, Fight On.
I, Sung Gyung Lee, will Elena Ho caffeine so she can continue to stay up until 2 a.m. creating art on Photoshop. I will her the courage to call businesses to remind them to send their ad graphics and a fulfilling sophomore year. I will Phoebe Borsum a hearty appetite and a never-ending love for food so our culinary adventures will never come to an end. I will Zoe Willoughby an endless supply of conspiracy theories, strange snapchats sent at 2 a.m. and the strength to live with me for the next year. I will Stella Yoo cheers to our wonderful friendship, filled with Pietro Boselli memes, terrible movies and Inka Wasi. To next year’s leadership, JJ and the family of H52, I will my best wishes for a fabulous eight issues and a fantastic school year.
I, Phoebe Borsum, will Nina Li, Emily McGinn and Alison Kim a fantastic year filled with beautiful layouts, an abundance of points bank points and lots of laughter. I am beyond proud of you girls and I cannot wait to see what an amazing job you do next year. To Saffy Laurio, Anne Lee and Liana Korotzer, I will each of you a stress-free and wonderful senior year of high school. Please know that if you ever need anything next year, I am only a phone call or a text away. To Olin Osbourne, I will a 5 on the AP Physics exam, a healthy vegan diet and the time to finally watch John Mulaney’s comedy special. I have no doubt that you will use your passion to make News an incredible section next year. To Chris Chien, I will questionable driving skills, dank Spotify playlists and snarky snapchats. Thank you for all the memories buddy, you are truly one of my favorite people. To Sung Gyung, I will my inability to split a check, all the figs you can possibly eat and a never-ending playlist of weird YouTube videos. You are going to kill it at UCLA, and I can’t wait to see all of your future success. Thank you for understanding me, and for being one of my best friends. To Stella Yoo, I will absolute knowledge of music theory, an endless supply of poke bowls and an amazing four years at USC. To JJ, I will early paste up nights, gold crown awards and all of my respect. Thank you for the years of patience and kindness. To Zoe Willoughby, I will a purple table, dozens of crystal-laden brownies and 13 years of best-friendship. From vacations in Hawaii to face painting nightmares, we have truly been through it all, and I am so glad to have grown up with you. You are such a special person and I am beyond lucky to have an extraordinary friend like you. And lastly, to everyone in H52, thank you for giving me four years full of smiles and happiness. You are all so talented, and I have so much faith that each of you will make The Pen even better than it already is.
