Deeds seal ownership AVRIL FILLIES

hen you start working, it is your dream to one-day be a property owner and to receive the title deed to your home. This is exactly what happened to 37 beneficiaries from Kewtown in Athlone on Thursday 28 November. Pensioners Ivan Faure (63) and Tamielah Kazie (61) were among the beneficiaries who received their Breaking New Grounds (BNG) title deeds in Protea Heights. The BNG strategy aims to promote an integrated society by developing sustainable human settlements and quality housing within a subsidy system for different income groups. Present at the handover at the Dulcie Sep-

tember Hall were Grant Twigg, Mayco member for urban management in the City of Cape Town; Rashid Adams, councillor for ward 49; and George March, Subcouncil 17 chairperson. “It is always heart-warming to empower some of our most vulnerable residents as first-time property owners and to see the joy on their faces when they receive their houses and title deeds,” says Twigg. He says the title deed is concrete evidence that gives beneficiaries the assurance that they are the rightful owners of their homes. “As the legal homeowners, beneficiaries are responsible for maintaining and managing their homes. “They are also encouraged to make decisions that safeguard their property for their

loved ones in future as these homes not only provide a shelter for their families but are also their financial assets,” says Mayco member for human settlements, Malusi Booi. In general, the City hosts consumer housing education workshops for all beneficiaries of State-subsidised BNG houses before they move into their homes to prepare them for their new role as property owners. The importance of title deeds and having a will are among the topics discussed. Twigg also says: “The handing over of title deeds allows homeowners to live in dignity in a home that they can call their own. It is an investment that will grow in value that becomes an asset for the homeowners and their loved ones.

“There is no greater pride than taking care of a house that you can call your own and turning it into a home. “Ensuring that our first-time property owners receive their title deeds forms part of the City’s commitment to building a caring city as improving the lives of our residents is at the heart of service delivery.” For many residents, owning a home is something they can only dream of. “The City is pleased to be part of turning the dream into a reality. The formal handover of title deeds is a remarkable event that transforms lives and empowers residents,” says Twigg. More title deeds will be handed over to beneficiaries in this housing project once they are issued by the Deeds Office.

Artisan commissioned for beds SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS @Samantha_Lee121

People's Post is published by WP Media, a subsidiary of Media24. ATHLONE 30 252 copies distributed Tuesdays to the following areas: Heideveld, Vanguard Estate, Welcome Estate, Manenberg, Athlone, Bel Ombre, Belgravia, Belthorn Estate, Hazendal, Penlyn Estate, Bridgetown, Doornhoogte, Gatesville & Hatton, Kewtown, Rylands, Silvertown, Surrey Estate and Crawford. A local artisan is encouraging residents to put their skills to good use and create their own opportunities. Having worked in the mechanical industry for many years, Mogamat Faried Guyan found himself imprisoned for a murder charge and on his release he found it difficult to find substantial employment. Having a criminal record could have slowed him down, but instead he started using his skills in welding to create his own business. “I had the knowledge and even became an instructor in prison,” says Guyan. He started a workshop fixing and making metal goods from his backyard in Tafelsig and was recently commissioned to create eight metal double bunks for Margret’s House, a Lansdowne-based place of safety for boys. Centre manager Melany Harris says they have 17 boys in their care. “We had wooden beds previously and that was not working for us,” she says. They needed to be repaired and replaced, and following the donation from international funder Swiss Re, the home could commission the construction of solid steel beds from Guyan, who they met through

former board chair and ward 79 councillor, Solomon Philander. He says there is a lot of talent in Mitchell’s Plain and that people are making opportunities for themselves.

Harris visited Guyan and said she was very happy with the result. Guyan installed the beds at the home on Thursday 12 December.

Fun day to show happy families T

he Athlone police in partnership with West End and the Lincoln New Apostolic Church in Athlone held a family fun day on Saturday 30 November. “The fun day coincided with the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign and was spent with games and fun for all,” says Sgt Zita Norman, spokesperson for Athlone police. She engaged with the children and explained to them what the 16 Days campaign meant. Parents could watch their kids in a safe

space and men and women could bond, respect and value their partners. “By showing the parents how to respect each other, they can create happy families which could help to build happy communities,” Norman says. “With an ever-changing world, all parents should be good role models to their children thus taking the lead engaging other parents with positive relationships. By loving and caring we can make our women and children live and enjoy a safe and happy life,” she says.

Second summer market on the cards AVRIL FILLIES

R

esidents in the Cape metropole can now attend the second of four summer markets in the Company’s Gardens until Monday 23 December. Markets were held in different areas including the Rooikrans Sport Complex in Grassy Park and Bellville civic centre. The last one will be held from 27 to 29 March next year at Athlone Stadium. “We will explore the expansion of our summer markets in the near future so as to provide even more opportunities to our traders,” says Grant Twigg, Mayco member for urban development.

The summer markets allow consumers and tourists an outdoor lifestyle and night shopping experience. The customary festivities and events such as the Summer Star, Play Zone and Food Zone to name but a few, will return to the Company’s Garden Market with new additions such as the Relaxation Zone where market goers can flex their muscles in yoga classes and massages. “Capetonians are familiar with the summer market in the Company’s Garden which was launched over two decades ago. This year, more opportunities will be given to small businesses and traders to supplement their income,” Twigg says.

Grant Twigg, Mayco member for urban development, chats to one of the stall holders at the summer market in Grassy Park.

I secure identity documents for those without so they can secure work and open bank accounts,” Kleinschmidt says. Kleinschmidt’s neighbours, colleagues, friends and family were quick to defend him and the work that is being done at the station. Lansdowne CPF secretary, Roy Smith, responding on a neighbourhood watch chat group, said: “Whoever did that is willfully ignoring what is being said and done to alleviate their situation. Cllr Mark Kleinschmidt has been quite vocal and proactive about what they are doing to assist the homeless as a City. “I’m not saying it because I know Cllr Mark Kleinschmidt, just from what is presented in public meetings.” Another neighbourhood watch patroller, Taariq, agreed. “I agree with Roy and Munier, Cllr Mark Kleinschmidt is a loving, compassionate guy; always there to help the community.” With the City’s social development directorate, stakeholders meet on a Tuesday evening between 18:00 and 20:00 to discuss topics related to homelessness and conduct upskilling programmes. “I’m also making applications on homeless persons’ behalf for identity documents which is required for employment and opening bank accounts. “Ratepayers and residents are happy that, after several years of unsightly anti-social behaviour, something positive is being done to rehabilitate and restore the Lansdowne Station Precinct. “I love this poster because my surname is spelt correctly. This event – to make the station and surrounds more presentable to commuters, the first of its kind – is my way of honouring my beautiful daughter and to raise awareness about diabetes on a grassroots level,” Kleinschmidt says.

he Zandvlei Estuary Nature Reserve in Marina Da Gama set the scene as the City of Cape Town and SANParks Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) honoured their volunteers on International Volunteers Day on Thursday 5 December. The part-time staff take on various tasks at the City’s nature reserves which include clearing alien vegetation, general maintenance, plant-nursery work, floral and faunal surveys, leading guided hikes, administration duties, providing environmental education and litter clean-ups. Julia Wood, biodiversity manager at the City of Cape Town, said the volunteers, both local and international, are a diverse group. “Some are school learners completing their work experience and others are simply residents looking for any opportunity to enjoy and take care of the natural environment within their area.” Munzhedzi Muhanelwa, people and conservation officer for SANParks TMNP, added: “It gives me hope that our efforts are not in vain but are for the benefit of the community in terms of the youth in our surrounding communities who need to take ownership of our natural resources and conserve it; not only for their sake but for future generations.” Wood says volunteerism is one of those intangibles where the rewards can be deep and lasting.” V For more information on the City’s project visit www.capetown.gov.za/naturereserves.

GRASSY PARK

Young author’s books lead to healing AVRIL FILLIES

C

himnese Davids from Grassy Park not only initiated the hygiene project at primary schools in Steenberg, Hanover Park and Mitchell’s Plain but is also the author of three books. “I founded Kreativ SA, a personal initiative to develop and enhance individual and community projects and publications, in order to build a healthy society. The publications are based on compassion and self-expression, leading to healing of the individual and the community,” she says. Her three books are Muses of Wandering Passions, No Greater Love Than This and Redeeming Soul. In Redeeming Soul she encourages victims of child abuse to break the silence and to tell their own stories. The publications brought about greater awareness, disclosure, notification and treatment, forgiveness and healing. “My initiative encourages any verbalisation and closure necessary for emotional and spiritual healing. This is necessary, especially in the case of sexual abusive acts against children, that were never reported or addressed. It is a brave deed to put pen

to paper having suffered sexual, emotional and physical abuse since childhood and as a young adult,” she says. Here are the synopses of each of her books: Muses of Wandering Passions (published 2012) – This book is the very definition of sadness and of loss. Its undiluted mourning grips the reader: within the starkness, the sincerity of recollections in fairness to the one causing the broken heart, is touching. The book contains the pensive reflections on a life that passed, but also the effects of it in the now. It brings a test of ability to those in need; a showdown. The reader is gently guided to assess their own love. It is often better to look at the self through the eyes of others. Even though one cannot calculate happiness, the lessons that arise from reading this book are that eternal love cannot be neutralized by separation; and the broken heart is not powerless. The end of the road brings options; one cannot fight reality; leaving does not necessarily mean stop loving; separation does not imply forgetting; mourning is not necessarily not forgiving. The forgiving heart may mourn; but even more, must mourn, in order to heal finally. Only then the spirit may grow beyond that which seemed to be so devastat-

ing and destructive. It is often so that the heart in mourning is taught to feel all emotions, in order to really understand and relate to the sorrow of others. In fact, this is crucial for anyone in any relationship. No Greater Love Than This (2015) – Davids outlines a spiritual path that is remarkable in its simplicity, its wonderment and in its realness. Only those truly touched by the grace of God can relate to the love and passion she portrays in this collection of poetry. The reader, still looking for answers may find it within these seven sections, deeply accumulative in intensity. The answers come when one least expects them: one may miss the whispers of God, for it is within a fraction of a moment in time that a completely new life may be reborn. Yet, even within this significant recognition, we still know that the Holy Spirit inspires even our choices and our most efforts. To be aware of the suffering and affliction of self and of other souls is to love the self and others as God intended us to do. Davids found within her love for poetry the inspirational presence of the Creator. She dances before Him in adoration and in devotion. Within Jesus Christ, she discovered the metamorphosis from wretchedness to happiness, inner growth, and eternal beauty. Redeeming Soul (2018 and new release this year) – Davids went through several stages of spiritual growth during the past decade. She documented her discoveries and progress in the two earlier publications and in them she reflected upon her relationship with God, self and loved ones on this journey called life. This book embodies the solemn tone, the same serious and eager yearning to get to the bottom of that which kept her from

R 249 ERKE ADULT SHOES

COSMETICS FROM R 15

reaching her full potential as a family member, member of society and as a spiritual being. In starkness and objectivity, but not without emotional indulgence and recognition of own shortcomings and pain, Davids lifts the curtain upon a silent and secretive life – a life that slowly but surely devoured her soul, turning her into a fearful human being, stripping her of her femininity and self-worth. The author sheds all masks and opens her heart to the reader, in order to share the miraculous purification of the Holy Spirit and divine intervention that prepared her to write this book. The content and sentiments of Redeeming Soul are entirely that of the author, as inspired by the Spirit. V Contact her on 061 650 9202 or email chimnese.davids@gmail.com to order.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Thousands of new boots on streets SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS @Samantha_Lee121

A

total of 5 000 police recruits have successfully completed their police training and will be deployed to stations across the country ahead of the festive season. The recruits graduated at a police parade at five colleges across the country; with 1 045 officers graduating in Cape Town, on Friday 13 December. The parade was held at the Philippi Police Academy and was the combined parade of both the Philippi and Bishop Lavis recruits. Deputy police minister Cassel Mathale says during their recruitment process more than 500 000 applications were received.

Of this, only 5 000 were successful. He says in the light of the rise in the number of cases of gender-based violence, much focus was also placed on preparing the recruits to deal with these cases and “ensure proper victim support is provided”. The new officers will be placed at the various stations across the country for a 12- month probation period. At least five constables who were identified as the top achievers at both the Philippi and Bishop Lavis campuses received bursaries to further their studies. At the parade, Capt Bart Nel lead the parade for the last time. Nel has been at the Philippi Academy for the past 39 years and will now be retiring. V Samantha Lee-Jacobs took these photos.

Visit and be thrilled at Iziko As the most advanced of its kind on the African continent, the Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome brings together art, science, nature and edu-tainment – creating a unique and innovative space for discovery, learning and fun. With an exciting line-up of shows this December, Iziko is calling on Capetonians and its visitors to join their #CelebrateSummer festivities. During December the planetarium will also be opening its doors on Mondays – screening shows until Monday 13 January. “Be sure not to miss out on an opportunity to blast off on a virtual voyage of the unknown! With shows like Out there – the Quest for Extra Solar Worlds, learn about how, for thousands of years, mankind thought that the Earth was the centre of the universe – yet thanks to our curiosity, im-

agination and urge to explore, we now know that planets like our Earth are nothing special in the cosmos,” a statement from Iziko read. “Fly beneath the rings of Saturn, float through the heart of the Orion Nebula, and plunge into a black hole during Passport to the Universe – a show narrated by Tom Hanks that explores humanity’s place in the cosmos; and connect life on Earth to the evolution of the universe in We Are Stars – a show exploring the secrets of our cosmic chemistry, and our explosive origins.” Other shows include Dream to Fly; The Secrets of Gravity; and The Sky Tonight. Visit the Iziko website for more information. “We look forward to seeing you at the Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome to #CelebrateSummer,” the statement read. Rain wreaks havoc on local cricket pitches GOOSAIN ABRAHAMS

R

ain put paid to newly-promoted Strandfontein’s chances of gaining muchneeded points in their Western Province Cricket Association Premier League match against Durbanville on Saturday 14 December. After batting first and being dismissed for 131, Saliegh Jaffar (31) top scored for Strandfontein and immediately hit back to have their opponents reeling at 124/9, still eight runs short of victory with a solitary wicket remaining. Intermittent rain caused the game to be called off with Durbanville eventually awarded the points by virtue of a superior run rate. Most of the other games suffered the same fate, with Rylands continuing their purple patch, getting the better of Gugulethu. Blitzboks fall short in Cape Town EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt

W

hile the boisterous partisan crowd filled the air with expectation at the Cape Town stadium, the Blitzboks fell agonisingly short of claiming their home leg of World Rugby’s Sevens World Series on Sunday 15 December. Coach Neil Powell’s men were beaten 7-5 by archrivals New Zealand in a nervy final in front of the 55 804-strong crowd who packed the stadium. In total, 119 539 people streamed through the gates during the threeday spectacle – a record for the event. After a scoreless first half, Justin Geduld handed the home team the lead after the restart but could not slot the subsequent conversion. As a result, Ngarohi McGarveyBlack broke South African hearts three minutes later when he dotted over under the posts, which made Akuila Rokolisoa’s pending conversion a mere formality. Despite the loss, Powell was satisfied with his team’s display over the past two weekends, which saw them bag the title in Dubai

a week earlier. “We had two good weeks, playing in two finals and winning one,” said Powell. “That is a much better start than last season and, bar the two line-outs we fluffed in the final, we had a good tournament. I certainly cannot fault the effort of the players.” Earlier in the day, in their semi-final, the Blitzboks had to fight back to secure a 21-14 win over France. Despite Marvin O’Connor’s try, converted by Paulin Riva, an inspired phase of play, which started within their half, saw Ruhan Nel dive over for a seven-point score. JC Pretorius’s clever dummy flummoxed the French defence and allowed him to coast over the try line unopposed, allowing the Blitzboks to lead the contest for the first time. Geduld duly slotted the conversion to move the score to 14-7. Captain Siviwe Soyizwapi capped off a spirited display, rounding off another attacking move from their defensive quarter to take the match beyond France’s reach and to book their spot in the showpiece of the tournament despite a late consolation try by Jonathan Laugel. In their quarter-final

clash against Kenya, Blitzboks turned in a clinical second-half display to see out their fellow Africans in a 17-5 win. It wasn’t all plain sailing, though. Local hearts were sent aflutter when, against the run of play, Kenya took an early 5-0 lead through an unconverted try by Alvin Otieno. However, Nel would restore parity, much to the delight of the home crowd, but Justin Geduld failed to convert, leaving the scores deadlocked at 5-5 at half-time. During the tournament, Geduld became the fourth South African player in the World Series to score 1000 career points after Cecil Afrika, Branco du Preez and Seabelo Senatla. Shortly after the restart, Nel would secure his brace after rounding off a well-orchestrated line-out, converted by Geduld. Selwyn Davids put the game beyond Kenya’s grasp when he chased down a kick by skipper Soyizwapi. Nel, however, could not play in the final after picking up an injury in the

semi-final win. He was sorely missed. “It was a pity that I could not play in the final, but that is the way rugby goes sometimes,” said Nel. “At least I played in two full tournaments and we did very well. I am now returning to fifteens, but I am very pleased with my short comeback to sevens. At least I know my conditioning will be right up there when I join the Stormers soon.” Meanwhile, the Springbok women’s Sevens team, Imbokodo, who made their debut at the Cape Town Sevens, finished 10th. Coach Paul Delport applauded his squad’s efforts, saying the tenth-place finish was what they were aiming for. “We realised that our intensity was not good enough and, therefore, our defence suffered and we made some poor decisions on attack,” said Delport. “But that was always par for the course as we last played at any level close to this last year at the Rugby World Cup Sevens.”
