hen you start working, it is your dream to one-day be a property owner and to receive the title deed to your home. This is exactly what happened to 37 beneficiaries from Kewtown in Athlone on Thursday 28 November. Pensioners Ivan Faure (63) and Tamielah Kazie (61) were among the beneficiaries who received their Breaking New Grounds (BNG) title deeds in Protea Heights. The BNG strategy aims to promote an integrated society by developing sustainable human settlements and quality housing within a subsidy system for different income groups. Present at the handover at the Dulcie Sep-

tember Hall were Grant Twigg, Mayco member for urban management in the City of Cape Town; Rashid Adams, councillor for ward 49; and George March, Subcouncil 17 chairperson. “It is always heart-warming to empower some of our most vulnerable residents as first-time property owners and to see the joy on their faces when they receive their houses and title deeds,” says Twigg. He says the title deed is concrete evidence that gives beneficiaries the assurance that they are the rightful owners of their homes. “As the legal homeowners, beneficiaries are responsible for maintaining and managing their homes. “They are also encouraged to make decisions that safeguard their property for their

loved ones in future as these homes not only provide a shelter for their families but are also their financial assets,” says Mayco member for human settlements, Malusi Booi. In general, the City hosts consumer housing education workshops for all beneficiaries of State-subsidised BNG houses before they move into their homes to prepare them for their new role as property owners. The importance of title deeds and having a will are among the topics discussed. Twigg also says: “The handing over of title deeds allows homeowners to live in dignity in a home that they can call their own. It is an investment that will grow in value that becomes an asset for the homeowners and their loved ones.

“There is no greater pride than taking care of a house that you can call your own and turning it into a home. “Ensuring that our first-time property owners receive their title deeds forms part of the City’s commitment to building a caring city as improving the lives of our residents is at the heart of service delivery.” For many residents, owning a home is something they can only dream of. “The City is pleased to be part of turning the dream into a reality. The formal handover of title deeds is a remarkable event that transforms lives and empowers residents,” says Twigg. More title deeds will be handed over to beneficiaries in this housing project once they are issued by the Deeds Office.
