Anxiety over early learning AVRIL FILLIES AVRIL.FILLIES@MEDIA24.COM

ith schools having re-opened for Grade 7 and Grade 12 on Monday 1 June, concerns have been raised by principals at Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in Lansdowne and surrounds about them re-opening their ECDs. “There are so many unknown variables when it comes to how the virus can impact me, my staff, children and parents. Some of our families have grandparents living with them. With known or unknown commodities, what guarantee can we offer our parents that children will not become infected?” asks Nadia Anderson, principal at Little Lamp Montessori school in Rondebosch East. “Will parents even send their children back to school? They have so much fear which has been instilled by this current situation and they are not sure how to proceed once the goahead for ECD centres to open is given. I feel schools should not be in a hurry to open as we have yet to reach the peak of the virus. With winter on our doorstep, children will become sick with flu, coughs and runny noses. Will we know if it is Covid-19 or the common cold?” she wonders. “My other concern is for how long will parents be able to help us keep our doors open, with many of us renting properties? Funds for PPE’s (personal and protective equipment) and other requirements are a challenge for most schools, so who will help those of us who are not able to buy these things? Few ECD centres get financial assistance from the department of social development, so not all the children in ECD will get equal assistance, protection and support,” Anderson says. Penny Julie, principal of KayPeeZee Educare in Rigel Road in Lansdowne, says lockdown has taught her the importance of at least some sort of routine in her life. “Working parents require a safe place for their children so they remain a productive part of society. Therefore, ECD centres are imperative and not all parents can or want to teach their children. Some parents really enjoy the time they

Restriction cut short for grooming industry Personal care services are again allowed to operate after national lockdown level three restrictions were amended last week. Industry professionals, however, believe the embargo on beauty and grooming could have been lifted much earlier considering the extensive safety and hygiene training that professionals in the industry undergo as a rule. spend with their little ones during lockdown and have realised the significance of this time. “My concerns are that at the reopening, a child or children would die. Even some of my staff members are vulnerable. Lockdown has brought a refreshing perspective on the fact that the rat race keeps us too busy to look at the beauty around us. “Lockdown has taught me the importance of purpose for individuals and has reminded me of the importance of interaction with fellow human beings,” she says. Aziza Ebrahim from Jumpstart Pre School in Kenwyn says her fears were and never will be for herself. “I fear for my 88-year-old mother living with me, the homeless, the frail, the needy. The fear of people contracting the virus and losing their lives when it could have been prevented had the lockdown been more effective.” On the opening of Jumpstart, Ebrahim says most of the staff are sole breadwinners who reside with their mothers or parents. “We fear that they could contract the virus at our ECD centre and carry it home. Children need to attend ECD centres so that they can acquire various skills to learn and become good human beings, also allowing their parents to go to work, but they could be carriers of the virus and not show symptoms. “Re-opening after the winter season is accepted, but many parents lost their jobs, had a cut in their salary or are working from home. So the return of all the children is not going to be 100%. The financial loss cannot be equated with the loss of human life, where it could have been prevented.” Ebrahim says, during an ECD chairpersons’ meeting on Wednesday 27 May – chaired by Faadiela Ryklief of Early Learning Resource Unit (ELRU) – the general consensus was to keep the schools closed, keep the children safe at home and help contain the virus. “All the sanitation at schools will not prevent an asymptomatic child entering the schools, infecting someone or many and resulting in the further spread of the virus. We must bear in mind that we are not alone in this pandemic. This should give some solace. Millions have been struggling their entire life and we are stressed,” Ebrahim says.
