sing the money set aside to buy a car for his daughter Miengah (26) who graduated earlier this year with a PhD in geology at the University of Cape Town (UCT), Ebrahim Abrahams of Athlone is helping to feed 500 people daily in Kewtown. From the time lockdown began at midnight on Thursday 26 March to Monday 18 May, up to 25 000 meals were handed out in Athlone, Bishop Lavis, Lotus River and Lost City. Abrahams is a Grade 6 teacher at Kewtown Primary School and this is his third year at the school. “Not even stints at schools in Mitchell’s Plain and Hanover Park prepared me for what I’m facing now. Children come to school wearing tattered clothing and slippers instead of shoes. Their clothes are dirty as there is no soap in the house to bath or wash their clothes. “Most of the learners come to school without something to eat as they depend on the school feeding scheme. Following their election as the new executive of the Lansdowne Community Policing Forum (CPF) on Tuesday 17 March, a few days before the national lockdown, members held their first remote meeting on Friday 20 May. The meeting was held over Zoom, an App that allows people to convene gatherings remotely. Members Rafique Foflonker (chair), Khadija Adams (secretary), Sgt Nkululeko Mnyaka (assistant secretary), Fatima Daniels (treasurer), Shabirah Abdullah (public relations officer) and additional members, Abdullatief Wentzel and Aman Karbary hosted the meeting with Lansdowne police station commander, Col Shawn van Wyk. Among other things, they discussed the roles and responsibilities for each member and ways to effectively serve the community. “We’re currently going through very difficult times and crime has been on the increase. There has been a spike in propertyrelated crimes, such as house break-ins and vehicle theft during the lockdown period in comparison to the same period last year. The surge in vehicle-related thefts in the area are specifically targeted toward older vehicles parked in the streets and not behind a locked gate or garage,” says Shabirah Abdullah, spokesperson for the CPF. The CPF advises all residents to take heed and protect their vehicles, be alert when dogs are barking in the area and be more vigilant for potential intruders. “We strongly encourage all members of the community to comply with the lockdown regulations and to stay indoors,” she says.
