Station to be revamped AVRIL FILLIES
L
ansdowne railway station is set for a revamp, thanks to an intervention by the City of Cape Town and other partners. Mark Kleinschmidt, councillor for ward 60, says before the project started, he met with George Kiewiets, a Metrorail representative, and Christa Liebenberg, the manager of subcouncil 17. Sub-council 17 had sent a letter to Metrorail to inform it of the project to address the safety, security and beautification of the precinct. “The safety of commuters and their vehicles left in the parking area during the day are
of major concern,” Kleinschmidt says. It was agreed the bricked-up building on the Sanral property at the Lansdowne station should be used as a security hub for all City and community security agencies. Other initiatives include landscaping and the formalising of trade at the station. The City agreed to fence the parking area and to address the issue of displaced persons. “I submitted a request to Mayor Dan Plato to rehabilitate the precinct and he initiated additional funding for the clean-up. Plato earmarked the project as a Mayoral Urban Regeneration Project (MURP), with additional funding for safety and security, solid waste
and social services,” Kleinschmidt says. The project will be rolled out on Monday 13 January, starting with the recruitment of additional Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers for the precinct. “We plan on rehabilitating the Prasa building and on placing a customised container to serve as a safety control centre, manned by law enforcement and neighbourhood watch members. A visible security presence is imperative in this precinct,” Kleinschmidt says. He also says that the City’s social development officials are hosting upliftment programmes for homeless people. “These programmes are conducted at the
Range Road Hall in Kenwyn every Tuesday between 18:00 and 20:00. I’ve pledged to assist the homeless to apply for identity documents. “Lansdowne police, the community police forum, neighbourhood watches, St Aidan’s Church, the road and solid waste directorates of the City and all concerned stakeholders have pledged support for the MURP,” Kleinschmidt says. Local businesses are invited to assist, while Kleinschmidt appeals to residents and businesses not to feed or give money to the homeless. V Call Kleinschmidt on 082 572 2562 for more information.
