Lansdowne railway station is undergoing a clean-up as part of the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Project.

ansdowne railway station is set for a revamp, thanks to an intervention by the City of Cape Town and other partners. Mark Kleinschmidt, councillor for ward 60, says before the project started, he met with George Kiewiets, a Metrorail representative, and Christa Liebenberg, the manager of subcouncil 17. Sub-council 17 had sent a letter to Metrorail to inform it of the project to address the safety, security and beautification of the precinct. “The safety of commuters and their vehicles left in the parking area during the day are
of major concern,” Kleinschmidt says. It was agreed the bricked-up building on the Sanral property at the Lansdowne station should be used as a security hub for all City and community security agencies. Other initiatives include landscaping and the formalising of trade at the station. The City agreed to fence the parking area and to address the issue of displaced persons. “I submitted a request to Mayor Dan Plato to rehabilitate the precinct and he initiated additional funding for the clean-up. Plato earmarked the project as a Mayoral Urban Regeneration Project (MURP), with additional funding for safety and security, solid waste
and social services,” Kleinschmidt says. The project will be rolled out on Monday 13 January, starting with the recruitment of additional Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers for the precinct. “We plan on rehabilitating the Prasa building and on placing a customised container to serve as a safety control centre, manned by law enforcement and neighbourhood watch members. A visible security presence is imperative in this precinct,” Kleinschmidt says. He also says that the City’s social development officials are hosting upliftment programmes for homeless people. “These programmes are conducted at the
Range Road Hall in Kenwyn every Tuesday between 18:00 and 20:00. I’ve pledged to assist the homeless to apply for identity documents. “Lansdowne police, the community police forum, neighbourhood watches, St Aidan’s Church, the road and solid waste directorates of the City and all concerned stakeholders have pledged support for the MURP,” Kleinschmidt says. Local businesses are invited to assist, while Kleinschmidt appeals to residents and businesses not to feed or give money to the homeless. V Call Kleinschmidt on 082 572 2562 for more information.

usic lovers are invited to the very popular Athlone Nantes Summer Festival Concert on Sunday 8 December from 14:00 tot 18:00. The Bridgetown Theatre Company (BTC) in collaboration with the City of Cape Town are the hosts and the concert is held at the Athlone Nantes Park amphitheatre. The event will be filmed as part of the new SABC 2 drama series called Melody. The Athlone Nantes Park has been part of the Athlone community since its establishment in the 1970s. It holds many great memories for many people from far and wide – from weddings, birthday celebrations, learning to play sport, enjoying the merry-go-round fairground, music shows, great fun with family and friends and not forgetting all the first kisses. In 2012, the City council initiated the closing of the Athlone Nantes Park for renovations. Since the reopening of the beautifully renovated park in November 2013, it has received negative publicity surrounding drug peddling and social evils taking place in the park. The City appointed a full-time management department under the guidance of Jacques Cedras and Naqiebah Roman to oversee the maintenance and security of the park. It is now appreciated as a family friendly environment. The concert will consist of live bands,

Books make the best gifts It’s almost time for the silly season to begin, and time to choose great gifts to give to friends and loved ones this festive season. “As someone who has always loved escaping into a book, even from a very young age, books for me are the ultimate gift, and truly are a gift that keeps giving,” says Candice Noakes-Dobson, author of A Little Horse called Pancakes. Below Noakes-Dobson notes a list of reasons why books are best: . By giving a book you are giving someone a magical world they can explore; . Books last forever; . You never need to worry about getting the wrong size when giving a book and there is a book out there for everyone;
. Books are one of the easiest gifts to wrap and you can take them with you anywhere; . Books don’t need batteries and they have a magical ability to keep even the loudest, bounciest beings quiet and content; . Unlike other toys, books won’t hurt if you stand on them in the middle of the night; . A book is a gift you can open again, and again, and again; . Books are a thoughtful gift; they let someone know you spent time choosing something they would really like; V For more information, follow @pancakesbookcollection on Facebook and Instagram or buy your copy on Takealot.com. All proceeds from the sale of these books go to the South African Riding for the Disabled (SARDA) organisation.

Mayor Dan Plato greeting kids at Athlone Stadium.

Mayor appeals for protection of females T
he 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children is a period of reflection and a call to action, says Cape Town mayor Dan Plato. He was speaking at Athlone Stadium on Saturday 23 November where he allocated R2 million to set up teams in vulnerable areas to help prevent violence against women and children. “Today we are taking proactive steps to fight the scourge of violence against our women and children. “The past year’s crime statistics show that sexual assault went up by nearly 3% and contact sexual offences increased drastically by 19% when compared to the previous year. Common assault and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm have both increased by nearly 2% and 4% respectively. It is clear that urgent proactive interventions are needed,” Plato said. He added that too often there are stories of men harming those they should protect and support. “We must cherish our wives, mothers, sisters and friends. We must change the behaviour of men so that the cycle of abuse comes to an end. The task team, to be launched in January, will be made up of a mix of professionals, experts in social development and local religious organisations and community
members and will work with the city’s social development department and community structures,” he said. The scope of the work will be determined according to community dynamics and is expected to include a series of workshops and other interventions. The task team will have to submit reports and its progress will be monitored by the mayor’s office. The City offers a list of programmes and interventions to assist the communities at risk. The programmes include: . The Women for Change Programme: this is an intervention programme aimed at vulnerable women and women in rental stock. . Men and Masculinities: a programme aimed at both young and adult men to reduce violence in communities and improve relations between men and women. The pilot project was implemented in Delft and will now be rolled out elsewhere. . The City of Cape Town’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) and Wellness Team hosted a talk to encourage all men to seek help to maintain their physical and mental health. “I am calling on the public to make use of our services so that we can put a stop to gender-based violence in our communities,” said Plato.

cruits is being put through their paces at the training ahead of being deployed in teams to various fire stations around the metropole to assist with the combatting of vegetation fires over the warmer months. Seasonal firefighters were introduced as an Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) in early 2009 to fund the appointment of 40 seasonal firefighters. The programme has since grown to more than 100 firefighters to increase resources and minimise the risk to lives and property, particularly where vegetation and
mountain fires threaten the urban edge. “Our city has very different firefighting needs to many others, literally because of the lay of the land, and the seasonal firefighter concept has been an enormous help to overcome that challenge. They perform a vital role alongside our permanent staff to safeguard lives and property, but their presence also means that we have more resources to deal with the other demands on the fire service, like residential fires and special service calls such as motor vehicle accidents,” says Mayco member for safety and security, JP

Smith. On average, more than two-thirds of fires dealt with by the City’s fire and rescue service each year are categorised as vegetation fires. Most of these occur over the warmer months from December to April. The programme is very popular among would-be firefighters, with stiff competition each year for the limited number of placements available. In 2019 the recruitment drive saw 1 632 candidates try out for the physical fitness assessment. Of these, 796 qualified to move onto the written assessment, followed by 249 being invited for one-on-one interviews. The training course started on Monday 11 November with induction and orientation, and the issuing of personal protective equipment. All staff will undergo four weeks of theoretical, practical and physical training during the Basic Wildland Firefighting Course, under the supervision of 16 seasonal supervisors. The curriculum’s theoretical content covers everything from City protocols to fire behaviour and weather conditions, firefighter safety and survival, the tools required for the job and fire suppression methods, among others. “This is the final hurdle for our seasonals. They’ve already gone through a lot to get to this point, and I encourage them to remain focused on the training at hand, so that they are able to realise their goal of being on the frontline. “I also want to extend a special word of thanks to the fire and rescue service staff who devote themselves to this programme each year, not only in the interest of public safety, but also for the development of potential future firefighters,” says Smith.

Thato to work for peace AVRIL FILLIES
T
o be chosen as one of the Trainer of Trainees for the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative (WPDI) in Bridgetown is an honour for Thato Monyelo from Kuils River. The WPDI was established and opened by the Hollywood actor Forest Whitaker earlier this month. Before he visited Bridgetown, he paid a visit to Cedar High in Lentegeur, Mitchell’s Plain, and encouraged the learners

to work for peace in the area known for gang violence. “I think the word happy does not explain how excited I am being one of the 45 Capetonians selected to be trainers. If I have to describe my day at the centre, it would be a day of fulfilment and a step closer to changing my community. My work at the centre would also help me become a better person,” she says. Thato says she is worried about violence in her neighbourhood and the fact that resi-
dents are not safe at their homes. Her biggest concern is the high rate of abuse in her community, especially rape. “I hope to make a difference by doing the peace training in my community in order for the community to become a lot better. I have a desire to work with women and girls to empower and motivate them to become the best version of themselves,” Thato says. To try and make a difference in her community she works closely with the residents. “I cannot describe the feeling when I met Whitaker for the first time. It was unbelievable and it brought joy to my heart. “You see all these actors in films or on screens and never dream of meeting them in person,” she says. Forest told the trainers that they have to develop a world perspective and not think locally only. Thato’s message to her community is that peace does not rest in charters and covenants. “The peace lies in the heart and mind of all people, so let us not rest all our hopes on parchments and paper. Let us strive to build peace, a desire for peace, a willingness to work for peace,” she says. The five-year programme – in partnerhip with global French Bank BNP Paribas and their local subsidiary, RCS – works to support the 45 Capetonians to educate 350 youth from communities across Cape Town. The trainers will become social development ambassadors who can mediate conflicts and foster peace. Forest’s WPDI Youth Peacemaker Network Programme promotes the power of youth for peace and sustainable development on the Cape Flats. The social development ambassadors were chosen in August, based on their personal experience and ability to act as change agents in their communities.

hen she learned from teachers that kids stay out of school due to illness in Steenberg, Athlone, Hanover Park and Mitchell’s Plain, Chimnese Davids from Grassy Park decided to help teach learners about cleanliness during her school drives. “We started in August and taught the kids to keep their hands clean after break time and before they have their meals. By washing their hands, it can help lessen a child staying out of school due to stomach bugs,” she says. Davids started her own NPO, Kreativ South Africa, in 2014 when she left the corporate world and a career in accounting to write and mentor others. “Kreativ SA is a personal initiative with the main aim to develop and enhance individual and community projects and publications, in order to build a healthy society. “In collaboration with the perfume store MRL Private Collection in Schaapkraal, we’ve decided to do the school drives by implementing a hygiene project where we go out to different schools on the Cape Flats,”
she says. The schools they’ve visited since August are: Sid G Rule Primary in Grassy Park, Sullivan Primary in Steenberg, Prince George Primary in Lavender Hill, Newfields Primary in Athlone, Voorspoed Primary in Hanover Park and West End Primary in Mitchell’s Plain. “We believe that giving back and teaching our little ones on health issues and how, by cleaning hands, less children will stay out of school and be present in school. Through the outreach it teaches one the values of life, in how something that may seem small can help in greater measures. “We’ve visited over ten schools thus far, and we’ve only started with the Grade R’s in each school where there are between two to five classes. “The total of learners in each class is between 30 tot 40 kids,” Davids says. According to Davids, she has seen during her school drives that public schools need help from communities. Davids has also published three books to encourage victims of child abuse to break the silence and to tell their own stories.

Marching bands keep growing from strength to strength RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes About 60 schools are set to compete in the Western Cape Provincial Marching Federation’s annual regional competition on Saturday 7 December at Athlone Stadium. Specta-
tors, parents and residents from across the Cape are encouraged to attend and support the youth. The schools and community teams usually hail from in and around Cape Town but this year the federation expanded its reach to instil the values of discipline and account-
ability in more children. Previously there were only 34 teams competing. “We’ve gone now into the rural areas also – Bredasdorp, the Karoo, Overberg, West Coast, Worcester and so on. Now during this annual competition, we bring all the schools

to compete,” said Roy Prinsloo, an executive member of the federation. The children will compete in several categories to find the best high school, primary school and community teams. Roy explained: “There’s the grand march pass, which must be regimented like the army does. So the judge will make sure everyone is in unison; that everyone’s arms move and go up at the same time, for example. The next one we have is the drum major competition, where they find the best drum major who leads the team. “And then there’s best dressed; we inspect to see if they’re neat and clean and make sure no buttons are broken, and so on. The final category is the exhibition where each of the teams shows their unique team choreography.” Roy, along with Nick Smit, manage Fairmount Secondary School’s award-winning marching band. Smit said, despite the rapidly growing number of teams taking part in the sport, the main problem is still funding. While their school may have a partnership with Norwegian funders, who sponsor their learners’ fees and partially support the marching band, other teams do not have the same financial support and more is needed to assist the sport to grow. The federation calls on any person or business who can provide help to support their local marching bands and to develop the sport. Roy says the sport is a successful mechanism to keep children out of trouble. V Email wpsmdea@yahoo.com to find out more or to support.

and show young people who are in my position that anything is possible if you work hard and stay persistent, and that you will reap the benefits of your labour, so I’m heavily grateful and blessed for this opportunity.” While born in Madagascar, Crazy-J Suave has made his home here in South Africa. Born on 7 April 1995, the “Trappanense” hip-hop music artist grew up in Lavender Hill, but moved to Milnerton at the age of 18, where he currently resides. He describes his sound as ‘new school rap’ that he’s created. “I’ve used normal hip-hop elements but with my own twist, incorporating our local slang as well, and it’s also about encouraging the youth to chase their dreams and do what they are passionate about.” Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith, who met with the talented young performer, noted how popular the music challenge has become. “There is such a diversity of musical talent in Cape Town and this is clearly reflected in the broad range of entries the Music Challenge received this year. “Well-done to everyone who submitted a video but there can be only one winner, so our congratulations go to Joshua Bukasa – Crazy-JMayco member for safety and security JP Smith and Crazy-J-Suave. ELDERLY ASSISTED IN BOARDING BUSES: Every Friday morning Col Shawn van Wyk, station commander at Lansdowne police station, and Mark Kleinschmidt, councillor of ward 70, conduct a visible policing safety patrol at the Hanover Park bus stop on Turfhall Road. Their visible presence is a deterrent to criminals, people who rob the many women who commute from the bus stop to work. They often assist the elderly onto the Golden Arrow buses, and are saddened when senior women battle to climb up the steep steps – an arduous task for the ailing seniors. Kleinschmidt suggests the management of Golden Arrow should develop a contraption to facilitate easier entry and exit of their buses, especially for senior citizens and physically disabled persons. He says it is becoming increasingly critical for South Africans to become aware of the disabled, and a user-friendly bus entrance will be a welcome initiative by Golden Arrow for its customers – “the bus for us”. Here Van Wyk is standing at the entrance of the bus to make sure that an elderly person enters the bus safely.

he safety of the residents of Lansdowne and a better relationship between the police and the community is the goal of WO Gregory Grey, a police member of the detective services at the Lansdowne police station. He recently received the Operational Employee of the Year Award at the Western Cape Prestige Awards in Century City. “Winning the award encourages me to do better every year and to remain committed and dedicated to my work. The award also motivates me to work closer with street committees, neighbourhood watches and private security companies in order to make Lansdowne a safer place for the community,” he says. This is not the first time that Grey received an award for services rendered in the police force. Seven years ago he also received a prestigious award. “I am in the police force for 28 years and received my basic training in 1992 at the Oudtshoorn Police College. I started my career at the Mitchell’s Plain crime prevention unit and then proceeded to Strandfontein police station where I worked in the Vispol environment. “From there I went to the flying squad in Maitland. I later worked at the child protection unit, now known as the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Investigations (FCS) unit,” he says. Grey also worked at provincial intelligence and the Maitland detective services.
When he is not on duty, he is an avid watcher of sports and plays chess at club level. “My message to the community is that they must feel safe, be able to contact the police an any time if and when they need assistance, information or reporting a crime. Over the festive season I have a busy schedule and plans to conduct regular tracing operations in search of wanted suspects,” Grey adds.

Safa CT pledges to ramp up safety EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt
I
n the wake of the tragic events which saw a young player lose his life on a soccer field, Safa Cape Town (Safa CT) has pledged to increase its safety profile across the local football associations it administers. Saturday 5 October was a dark day for community football when Imtiyaaz Wagiet left home never to return again. Sadly, in a match between Bayview’s u.16 team and Strandfontein, Imtiyaaz collapsed on the field with no medical professional or qualified first aider. According to his coach at Bayview, Mark Rodrigues, he was then loaded into his parent’s car and taken to the nearby fire station. “People tried to resuscitate him. After 10 minutes they took the boy and put him in his parents’ car. They took him to the fire station. At the fire station, they tried their best to keep him alive. He was there for around 10 minutes, but he then passed on,” he says. Two years ago, People’s Post,
through their freelance sport photographer Rashied Isaacs, highlighted the dire need for health and safety personnel on community sports fields (“Safety no walk in the park”, 14 February 2017), but with the tragic events at Westridge Oval last month, Isaacs’ worst fears were realised. According to Isaacs, Wagiet’s death once again highlighted the need for thorough emergency planning for all sports and he is determined to bring about change at the different sporting venues, partnering with an accredited company to offer free first aid training for coaches as far back as 2014. Earlier this year, Isaacs refused to attend any more Safa CT events unless they addressed the apparent safety issues which saw Wagiet tragically lose his life. As a result, Safa CT president Bennett Bailey met with Isaacs to discuss his concerns and to pledge their commitment to the safer sports field project. Bailey then committed to introducing a holistic plan around safety for the 70 000 registered players in the 35 local football associations
(LFAs) he leads. “We have introduced, at a regional level, a constitutional clause where we refer to our medical officer, who is responsible for safety at our events. That we are going to bring and cascade to a local level, so that there is a pathway from local to provincial to national – that we all speak the same language,” Bailey said, adding that these policies now need to be enforced. “One of the things we are going to start with is to instruct all LFAs to appoint a medical officer in terms of the Safa regional and national constitution,” said Bailey. The new local football season starts in April next year, which is the time earmarked for changes to take effect. Bailey hopes that players and other informal associations follow Safa CT’s suit by placing more importance on safety. “It is like boxing where you cannot start the fight without a paramedic or an ambulance being onsite,” he says, adding that even third division clubs will be able to be trained up in first aid.

“We also want the referees to enforce it (safety standards) also, where if there is not a visible first aider present then that game should not start at all,” said Bailey. He adds this is one of the final pieces to Safa CT’s overall puzzle, whereby they seek to improve the level of performances of football players, which in turn will improve the standard of football being played locally. “Part of that process of identify-
ing talent is to get the right athletes – this is where the safety and our medical officer comes in terms of testing. When we test athletes we will look at all areas – the bio-kinetics, nutrition and all the areas necessary – for scientific support, but with it also, the athlete needs to be fit. We cannot send an athlete for provincial training at provincial teams if this person is not fit or healthy,” he said.
