Islamia learner off to Ghana as volunteer AVRIL FILLIES
F
arah Logday, a Grade 10 learner at Islamia College in Lansdowne, is one of two South Africans who will join Operation Smile’s non-medical student volunteer team in Ghana later this month. The team will be stationed in Ghana’s Koforidua region where they will meet children going into surgery and observe the proceedings. Operation Smile’s mission is to provide free corrective surgery and medical assessments to cleft pallet patients in the area. Farah said it has always been part of her family’s practice to help others. Islamia College’s dedication to creating opportunities for learners to volunteer guided her in her decision to join the Operation Smile team. “There was no doubt in my mind to volunteer with Operation Smile when I joined their student programme,” Farah said. She says she likes to make people smile and when she sees children smile in Ghana it will make her feel like she has accomplished something good and that she made a difference in a person’s life. “I am excited to be involved with the organisation and to assist where I can. “I am looking forward to seeing the
transformation in children who felt ashamed and had difficulty living their everyday lives before Operation Smile changed their lives. “I am also looking forward to meeting the great people behind the global organisation as well as meeting the patients,” she says. The Lansdowne resident also tries to get involved with community projects. “My hobbies are caring for people, swimming, sewing, knitting and coding. My parents have influenced me the most to be a humanitarian. They always get involved in the community. Their involvement inspired me to try and make a difference since I was little,” Farah said. She loves all of her school subjects equally as she enjoys learning. “If I had to describe myself in five words it would be empathetic, hilarious, loyal, caring and considerate. These are the words often used by family and friends to describe me,” she says. Farah would like to thank her sponsor for this trip as well as Ameer Mohammed, a former teacher who introduced the organisation to Islamia College and, by so doing, granted her the opportunity to go on this trip. The college wishes her a safe and fulfilling journey to Ghana. “We are proud of her for flying the Islamia flag high.”

Cape service. The service offers free internet access at various libraries to registered users. In the last instance, cable theft left users without access to the service for more than a year in Lwandle. Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien says the library and information service is trying to find alternative means of securing internet connectivity through a partnership with the City’s information services and technology department. “But in many cases, we rely on third-party service providers like Telkom who are also grappling with continued theft, to the point of not wanting to replace stolen infrastructure in some cases,” Badroodien says. Despite these challenges, the City continues to increase SmartCape access at libraries. “We have received 123 additional computers from the Western Cape provincial library services for installation at 22 of our libraries. However, the installation at 14 libraries was delayed as a result of either vandalism or theft. Libraries are also battling other forms of vandalism and theft. According to Badroodien, since January, there were 58 insurance claims for incidents at 30 libraries, totalling nearly R578 000. 162 suspects arrested in one week AVRIL FILLIES
A
total of 162 suspects were arrested the past week for various crimes in the Mitchell’s Plain cluster. “Police in Mitchell’s Plain is constantly clamping down on criminals. Intensive patrols, ‘stopping and searching’ of suspicious persons and the regular raiding of houses – especially the houses of those identified as targets contributing to the high crime rate for illegal guns, drugs, stolen goods, wanted suspects and shebeens – are the order of the day,” says Sgt Zita Norman, spokesperson of
Athlone Police. One hundred and thirty suspects were arrested for drug related crimes the past week and 94 drug houses were searched. “One operation was done at a taxi rank with seven successes. “Eight shebeen operations were conducted with one arrest. “Thirty-seven second-hand goods premises were visited and one counterfeit goods operations was conducted. “Six tracing operations were conducted resulting in 16 wanted persons being arrested. Three hundred and forty-one spaza shops
were visited and eight firearms were confiscated and six arrests made. “Fifty-five people were tested on the MCD device. “Thirty-seven cases were reported of violence against women and children and nine arrests were made,” Norman says. Crime against women and children is a priority crime and is highly addressed by the Saps. The cluster commander of Mitchell’s Plain, Major General Hendrik Burger, commended the members for their dedication towards fighting crime.
Burger says members under his command remain dedicated and positive and will continue building trust in the communities and working together towards a safer environment. He says committed police members as well as community members have his full support in structural measures to reduce crime. Burger appeals to all members of the community to join the community structures in their respective place of residence. V Anyone with information can call the police at Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or their local police stations. All information will be treated as highly confidential.
Drunk and negligent drivers arrested by City officers SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS @Samantha_lee121 City law enforcement officials had their hands full at the end of last month, with several arrests and thousands of Rands worth of fines issued to motorists across the City. A total of 275 arrests were made, with outstanding warrants and drunk driving dominated arrest statistics. The City’s Traffic Officers made 238 arrests, impounded 99 sedan and minibus taxis, 129 cellphones and issued 44 100 fines. Among those arrested were 102 suspects for driving under the influence, 70 for outstanding warrants and 17 for reckless and negligent driving. Officers also released 1 000 motorists on a warning for outstanding warrants, and executed 3 079 warrants. “When a fine is issued, a motorist has to
Man killed in shooting Wade Isaacs (23) from Kewton was killed after an unknown man started shooting at him and his father in Eland Street at 07:30 on Tuesday 29 October. “Isaacs and his father were walking along Eland Street, when an unknown man walked in their direction and started shooting at them. The deceased was shot in the back,” says Sgt Zita Norman, spokesperson for the Athlone police. Approximately four shots were fired. Isaacs ran across Eland Street and collapsed and passed away outside a residence in Heathcourt, Kewtown. The deceased resided at Block 5, number 11, Kewtown. No arrests have been made yet and the investigation continues. The public is requested to contact Sgt Zita Norman on 021 697 9216 or 082 378 9018 with any information.
pay it by a certain date. Alternatively, they can appear in court if they wish to dispute the fine or make representations in respect of the fine issued. In the event that a motorist fails to pay a fine by the due date and fails to appear in court on the alternative date presented on the fine notice, then a warrant is issued. The maximum sentence/ fine is at the discretion of the court,” says JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security. Metro police officers made 37 arrests and their successes included 22 drunk driving arrests, with one motorist slapped with additional charges of fraud and bribery. The 38-year-old suspect was one of eight motorists arrested for drunk driving at a roadblock in Hout Bay on Sunday 27 October. Officers then noticed that he had a fraudulent license disc and when confronted with this information, the suspect offered
the officer R500 to look the other way, but his attempt at bribery fell flat. Officers also made 12 drug-related arrests, two suspects for distributing films illegally and one suspect for attempted theft out of a motor vehicle. Traffic services impounded 18 vehicles in a sedan taxi operation held in the Green Point and issued 54 fines for various other offences on Sunday 20 October. In the week that followed between Sunday 20 and Saturday 26 October, the Traffic Services taxi enforcement unit conducted numerous operations throughout the city and impounded 29 vehicles and issued 815 fines for various other offences. In general enforcement done throughout the city, traffic officers arrested 218 suspects, 87 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 14 for reckless/negligent driving, 47 other and 70 for outstanding warrants.
“On Wednesday 23 October, in an enforcement operation held on Nelson Mandela Boulevard, Hospital Bend and surrounds, officers issued 424 fines for various other offences. (On the same day officers also held a) DWI/illegal street racing operation in the Plattekloof area (where) officers arrested two suspects, one for driving under the influence of alcohol and one for reckless/negligent driving. Officers also issued 87 fines for various offences,” says Smith. “Our staff continue to rack up hundreds of arrests each week, for the same offences, and avoidable ones at that. The reality is that, if people abide by the law, they won’t be fined. Even if they are fined, timeous payment can prevent ending up behind bars for outstanding warrants. The same goes for drunk driving. It’s simple – just don’t do it,” says Smith.

They started patrolling yesterday when schools dismissed learners the day before Guy Fawkes. “This will be done to avoid learners from hurting and smearing innocent victims with paint, eggs, flour, blades and shoe polish. “The Athlone Police are doing this in partnership with Metro Police and Law enforcement,” says Sgt Zita Norman, spokesperson for Athlone Police. She also says they would ensure that firecrackers are not set off in residential areas. “Any person caught doing it will be given a hefty fine. “The discharging of fireworks is not allowed in terms of the Community Fire Safety By-law, but the City of Cape Town has for a number of years, made an exception to accommodate this practice for Guy Fawkes, Diwali and New Year’s Eve,” Norman says. In a statement, the City said that a number of factors made them change course this year. JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security, says that there was a decreased appetite from subcouncils to apporve designated sites. “The cost associated with running the sites include deploying staff and resources, including law enforcement, metro police, traffic and the fire and rescue services. “The public is also opposing the use of fireworks and seeing that there will be no designated sites this year, the City appeals to residents to refrain from using fireworks,” he said. Other dangerous behaviour has also been reported, and in previous years it even resulted in physical harm to innocent learners and bystanders,” she said in a statement. According to Schäfer there is also increased absenteeism in certain schools during this period. She said some learners stay out of school to take part in Guy Fawkes activities. Others stay home out of fear of being targeted on their way to or from school. She asked parents not to keep children at home as it will be a normal school day. “Grade 12 learners are writing geography today and it would be very unfortunate and infuriating if these examinations are disrupted in any way because these learners were targeted ahead of such an important matric examination,” her statement reads.
APPrehend criminals Members of the public can now report anonymous crime tips through the new My Saps mobile app. The police, in partnership with Vodacom, have officially launched the app which allows users access to several features. These include the submission of crime tip-offs anonymously through the app, locating the nearest police station or vulnerable services facilities and sending emergency messages when
in danger. To access the platform, users need to first register and create a profile. Once this has been done, a directory of police stations and nearby social service facilities will be provided. When a tip-off is given using the app, users are given the option to report the crime anonymously. They are required to identify the type of incident and supply details of the event, suspect information, as well as any other information that can assist the police. The information will be used to assist the police in creating a profile on alleged suspects. Users are provided with a reference number and the ability to supply further information about the crime or to follow up on the police’s progress. Victims of crime are still required to register a case at a police station for investigation and insurance claims. V The app is available for smartphones from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Feature phone users can also use the USSD string *134*10111# to access the crime tip-off line.

Upon a recent follow-up, she was told that the plaque was being amended, and that she would be provided with pictures to corroborate her brother’s name being added. Hewitson had yet to receive picture confirmation on Wednesday 30 October, when People’s Post contacted Glory Memorial Park for a comment, speaking to Elvita Levendal. “It is being placed on the plaque today,” Levendal said six days after proferring the same information to Hewitson six days earlier,” said Levendal. “She can come check tomorrow any time, it will be there,” she added on the day, citing a broken phone as the reason why a picture will be difficult to provide. Hewitson received picture confirmation of her brother’s inclusion on the plaque at last on Thursday 31 October, offering her the closure she needed.
he 15-month wait for Retreat resident Jolyn Hewitson and her family to have her deceased brother’s name added onto a plaque commemorating his departure is over. She confirms that a photograph was sent through WhatsApp from Gloria Memorial cemetery bearing the picture of her brother’s name on the plaque. SA’s gem to backup Toni W
ith less than two weeks to go to Toni Braxton’s As Long As I Live SA tour, event promoters Glen 21 Entertainment in association with McDonald’s and KayaFM, have announced that platinum selling artist Shekhinah alongside DJ Hudson will support Braxton on tour in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Having established herself as a national treasure, post her stint on South African Idols, Shekhinah became a household name after
her 2016 hit single “Back to the Beach”. She also featured on the Black Coffee single, “Your Eyes”, and the Jesse Clegg single “Breathing” in the same year, raising her to stardom. This multi-award winning musical sensation has performed across the continent and has collaborated with several international artists and local brands. Her recent album Rosegold is currently the highest streamed album in the country and is certified platinum. The Cape Town show will take place on Tuesday 12 November at the Grand Arena, Grandwest Casino. Both shows are officially sold out.
Russian ballet lovers may brace themselves for a week-long performance by the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre from Wednesday 15 to Sunday 19 April next year. The crew will be presenting a Tchaikovsky’s magnificent classical ballet and Swan Lake at the Artscape Opera House. Organisers have promised stunning performances. “Led by Prima Ballerina, Irina Kolesnikova, I guarantee our performances here in South Africa will long be remembered. From London’s Coliseum Theatre to the Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris, and
from Hong Kong to Sydney, our unequalled Russian art performs to full houses and standing ovations,” says Konstantin Tachkin, the founding director of the St Petersburg Ballet. “In the statement, it is said that Swan Lake tells the classic love story of Prince Siegfried and the Swan Princess, Odette torn, apart by the villainous sorcerer Rothbart in a story where true love conquers all,” Tachkin adds. V Ticket prices vary from R250 to R690 and are available at https://swanlake.computicket.com. For more information visit the Facebook page: St Petersburg Ballet Theatre.

Perfect weekend for Lavender Hill NOORE NACERODIEN
L
avender Hill had a perfect weekend when they won both their games in the Super League of the Cape Town Softball Association at the weekend. On Saturday, the young lasses from the Hill easily beat Glenthorn A’s 11-3. A’s could only muster three hits from the Hill’s pitching duo of Melissa Savage and Grivonne Rhoda. The Hill’s batters also showed no mercy to Mushfieka Abdurahman and Chante Pepino who shared the pitching duties on the mound for A’s. They amassed a total of 11 hits from the luckless duo with Miché Hendricks (3-4) and Jadine Davids (2-2) topping the batting for the Hill. The Hill found the going tougher against Falcons on Sunday 3 November, running out 4-2 winners in a tight contest.
