Seniors told of Covid-19 AVRIL FILLIES AVRIL.FILLIES@MEDIA24.COM
S
enior citizens from Lansdowne and surrounding areas were treated to lunch and a goodie bag when they held their last gathering for now in the Lansdowne civic centre on Wednesday 18 March. The meetings will be halted to prevent the spread of Covid-19. The seniors received a bar of soap, a mask
and hand sanitiser. They were encouraged to wash their hands more frequently and to use hand sanitiser. They also enjoyed lunch to celebrate the birthday of Mark Kleinschmidt, the councillor for ward 60. The gathering was attended by councillors of subcouncil 17, which include wards 48, 49 and 60. In attendance were Yagyah Adams (Athlone) and George March, chair of Subcouncil 17. The councillors spoke about president Cyril Ramaphosa’s call to refrain from attending gatherings of more than 100 people and
the effect of Covid-19 on children and the elderly. A representative from Sassa explained how and when the seniors can receive their social grants from next month onwards. At the same event, Adams handed over a R5 000 cheque to the Lansdowne clinic. “It was my 50th birthday earlier this year and I decided to donate the sum of R50 000 in total to various charities. Today’s event, where I handed over R5 000 to the Lansdowne clinic, is the first of 10 events planned for 2020. My idea is to encourage other politi-
cians to give back directly from ‘themselves’ to the community instead of just talking,” he says. He said the joint event was an indication that politicians can work together. “The community must know that there are politicians who want to work together with others for the collective well-being of the community,” he says. At the event, it was also announced that the TB workshop which was supposed to be held on Saturday 28 March, will be postponed until further notice.
