AWARENESS

Speaking out in one voice RACINE EDWARDES @#RaeEdwardes

T

he annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign has more significance in South Africa this year than ever before. Since the spate of violent attacks on women this year, the country has banded together to fight the scourge of gender-based violence – and Where Rainbows Meet Training and Development Foundation hopes to play a role in ridding the country of this crime. Kyle Cupido, project manager at the foundation, says over the course of the 16 days

they will be working collaboratively to host programmes and inform the community. “We educated people around domestic violence; whether they are male or female survivors, whether it is physical abuse, psychological, verbal, emotional, sexual or financial,” says Fatiema Asvat, marketing and fundraising manager at the foundation. She added: “The foundation was blessed with the presence of Cpt Stephen Knapp from Muizenberg police station, who addressed us all with the roles and responsibilities of the police when it comes to violence – specifically domestic violence. He made us feel safe and gave us hope. He went through

all procedures – legally and lawfully – and shared valuable information step by step to equip and empower the people facing these challenges.” The foundation staged a peaceful protest at the corner of Vrygrond Avenue and Prince George Drive (M5) to continue to raise awareness about gender-based violence on Tuesday 26 November. “We took to the streets and we raised our voices, we spoke for those who cannot, we fight for those who are six feet under and we stand united for those who stand alone,” she says. According to her, this topic is especially

important in the Vrygrond community – and in the Cape Flats –because the stories of the victims such as Jessie Hess and Uyinene Mrwetyana resonate with women. “Different types of abuse were identified by so many different women and men. Through our peaceful protesting, our picketing to fight and stand against all the abuse, the rape, the murders and the battering; our communities opened up and shared their stories. They suffer tremendously and we want change.” Asvat says the foundation aims to raise awareness every day of the year, “and we will continue to do so for years to come”.

Cpt Stephen Knapp addressed members of Where Rainbows Meet Training and Development Foundation as part of its 16 Days of Activism programme.

Dogfighting rife in Ocean View, still a major concern RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

O

cean View has been identified as a hotbed for dogfighting, with almost 40% of cases that could be prosecuted, deriving from this community. According to Belinda Abraham, communications manager for the SPCA Cape of Good Hope, just under two-fifths of dogfighting cases – where there is sufficient evidence to open a docket and lay charges for contravention of the Animals Protection Act –have originated from Ocean View. “All of these cases have children as the accused which is gravely concerning as this routine exposure to unfettered animal abuse and neglect is a major contributing factor to a later manifestation of social deviance,” she added. This statistic has brought dogfighting under the spotlight of the provincial community safety department. Provincial minister for community safety Albert Fritz called on neighbourhood watches, community policing forums and communities to help stamp out animal cruelty. “We will investigate a holistic ap-

proach to address this social ill. “We will further consult with key stakeholders and academic communities as part of the safety plan to develop a long-term holistic response to this issue.” His office will be arranging a meeting with all animal welfare societies in the province, including Animal Welfare South Africa, SPCA and Tears Animal Rescue, early next year to address the issue. According to Ocean View’s Mother Theresa of animals, Ingrid Destorie, incidents involving animal abuse seem to have dropped in Ocean View, since gaining more attention in the past few months. “I think the people who do the dogfighting are wary now,” she says. “They know I’m watching them and that this is a problem here.” For more information on the consequences of dogfighting, read “Dogfighting a rising concern” in People’s Post, 5 November: https://bit.ly/2OLvw5F V Report animal abuse to the SPCA on 021 700 4140, 083 326 1604 after hours or email info@capespca.co.za; the Animal Welfare Society for South Africa on 021 692 2626; or to the police on 08600 10111 or 32211 by SMS.

Dogfighting is now under the spotlight of the provincial community safety department.

Sunday 15 December will be a day for the abled, disabled and differently-abled to unite in the surf – and take on the waves, perhaps for the first time, at Muizenberg’s Surfer’s Corner. The Roxy Davis Foundation will be hosting two events on Sunday – a Surf Therapy Clinic for anyone with physical, intellectual or behavioural disabilities who would like to learn to surf, and a marathon of sorts consisting of running, surfing and yoga. The first event, called Run. Surf. Yoga. kicks off at 08:00 in partnership with the Roxy Make Waves Move Mountains Tour. Roxy Davis, the founder of the foundation and ambassador for the global Roxy surf brand, says the entire day is to promote togetherness. “The focus is on creating a tribe and creating safe spaces.” For this event – a women-only event – which has been running for five years this year, Roxy wants to encourage participants to take on the challenge of leading a healthier lifestyle. It begins with a 5km walk or run through Muizenberg’s iconic and historic roads. This is followed by a surfing lesson hosted by the Roxy Surf Emporium staff and then a yoga session facilitated by Virgin Active’s

yogis. “We want women to get active and get in the water because there’s something magical that happens when women get together,” says Roxy. The first 200 women to pre-register will go home with a goodie bag. This event finishes at noon and is followed by the surfing clinic for differentlyabled people and even people who suffer stress-related illness. She says surfing and being in touch with nature can calm people. Roxy encourages those who take part in the Run. Surf. Yoga. event to also assist as volunteers during this follow-up activity. The Surf Therapy Clinic will take place to commemorate International Day of Disabled Persons which was recognised on Tuesday 3 December. The foundation has been engaging differently-abled people for many years and emphasises the ability of the sport to help them cope better in general. “I started our first school 18 years ago and I just wanted to give back and use surfing as a tool to save lives. “At The Surf Emporium, we do that through surf therapy – teaching people with physical and mental disabilities. “We want to let people know that physical activity and therapy and community is what sets these programmes apart.” V For more information on either event, visit: bit.ly/2Lugwad and bit.ly/38ceZ27

Work began on Monday 2 December to fix the Prince George Drive traffic lights at three intersections, after they had been vandalised in October.

City repairs M5 traffic signals T

ension between Marina da Gama residents and the City of Cape Town has abated somewhat since the problematic traffic lights on Prince George Drive (M5) were fixed last week. The traffic signals on Prince George Drive at the intersections of Military Road, Vrygrond Avenue and Capricorn Boulevard North, have been out of order since 31 October when they were vandalised during violent protests. After the Mayco member for transport Felicity Purchase announced the decision not to fix them, residents of Marina da Gama expressed their frustration at the inconvenience and safety hazards these intersections posed for motorists heading to Muizenberg.

Residents of Seawinds and Lavender Hill also noted a visible increase in smash-andgrab robberies that took place at the Military intersection – with criminals committing these crimes in broad daylight. Another concern was the stop signs attached to the robots to control traffic. A People’s Post reader, Brenda Williams, who responded to a report, “Too dangerous to fix traffic lights”, published on 26 November said in a letter: “Big stop signs were erected, but nobody obeys the rules – i.e. of a fourway stop sign. Drivers do not even obey the ordinary stop signs in residential areas or even red traffic lights at the Military Road, Coniston Avenue intersection.” The City reported that a team had com-

menced with the repair work on Monday 2 December. “We have been receiving many complaints about these signals being out of order, and residents have asked why it is taking us so long to do the repairs. “Firstly, to date, it has been too dangerous for officials to access the area to do the necessary work. Also, those who have been involved in the violent protests have threatened to destroy these signals again should the City attempt to do the repairs. The situation has finally stabilised, but I am still concerned about these threats,” Purchase said in a statement. The repairs cost the City more than R2 million, with the repair of the traffic sig-

nals at each intersection estimated at R890 000. Another reader, Helen Erlangsen, wrote to People’s Post suggesting that the City try more innovative means to prevent thugs from destroying the infrastructure. “The City cannot continually replace the controls for these robots in ‘above-the-ground’, highly flammable, plastic boxes and expect a different outcome. Surely some clever engineers or university research students could be encouraged (in competition) to design an underground control system, housed in a fire-proof metal box. The controls can then easily be raised above ground when maintenance is required and lowered safely on completion.”

ews of Quietness was robbed of thousands of rands worth of goods last month and now the community is rallying to help them replenish their Christmas donation stock. The non-profit organisation specialises in victim empowerment and the creation of safe spaces for women and children. Operating from a refurbished container at Delta Primary School in Steenberg, the NPO has been collecting goods to donate for several months. “It was broken into on 18 November and it was horrible,” says Moeridah Dien, founder of the NPO. “They stole R6 000 worth of toiletries. They stole the gas stove, new pots, a computer, three crates of cutlery, crockery, 150 packs of pads and I don’t even know what else!” She adds: “And we were preparing to do the Santa shoebox drive – and now we’re sitting with nothing. But we’re getting help from all over to make it happen.”

Gillian Stoffels, a senior admin clerk at the Steenberg police station, called on residents and colleagues to assist her. “We did it within a month – because I heard her container was broken into and a lot of things were taken. So we just decided, let’s do something for them. It was from individuals at the station and I also had a friend who donated some things,” Stoffels says. The small group were able to collect toiletries, beanies and some books and toys. Dien adds that the goods received at a handover on Tuesday 3 December were not the only donations. “Somebody came and gave us a stove – a two-plate burner and a gas tank – but we didn’t get anything back that was stolen. But that’s not going to put us off.” The police arrested one man for theft but did not have enough evidence to charge him. Dien says they are still waiting on the results of fingerprints found at the scene. Dien says they still plan to distribute Christmas donations next week Friday. V Call Moeridah on 078 4000 801 to make a donation or for more information.

ANIMAL WELFARE

Think twice before you gift a pet RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

G

iving the gift of unconditional love may seem like a wonderful idea but often the novelty of a puppy or kitten can wear off when the responsibility of pet ownership becomes a reality, says the SPCA Cape of Good Hope. During the festive season, children are often gifted with new pets – birds, puppies, fish, rabbits and kittens – by their parents.

While the child’s happiness is paramount at the time, all the responsibility that comes with the gift of a pet should be seriously considered first. Belinda Abrahams, communications manager at the SPCA, explains that January is the month in which the highest number of unwanted pets are surrendered to the SPCA. “In January 2018 and 2019 we saw respectively 1 344 and 1 075 unwanted animals come through our doors; and while the reduction in numbers is encour-

aging from one year to the next, the numbers are still gravely concerning.” The situation is the same – if not worse – for exotic animals. Steve Meighan, a Glencairn-based snake conservationist, says it is not uncommon for him to be called to rescue snakes that have been cared for by someone who has not researched the correct diet and habitats of their new pets. “Each animal has needs and those needs are life-long – not only for Christmas. Some reptiles live 15 years or more, so it’s a long-

term commitment.” He recommends that proper research be carried out before taking the big step. He also says speaking to experienced pet-owners is a good measure to gauge what you’re in for when taking on ownership of a pet. “If you rush off to buy a reptile without knowledge of what it needs, it will not eat and it will die,” he adds. Abrahams says the following is a list of things that must be considered before acquiring or gifting an animal: . Can you or the potential owner afford to own a particular animal? This consideration must extend to not only food but also annual vaccination costs, parasite control and unexpected veterinary expenses. . Does the recipient want a pet and the responsibility associated with pet ownership? Gifting a pet into these circumstances would result in some serious welfare concerns, and a well-intended “gift” may well face a life of misery and neglect. . Does the potential owner have sufficient space for the animal to live a life where they can express their normal behaviour? . Will adequate shelter be provided? Will the pet be allowed to be part of the family? . Does the potential owner have the time and energy that must be invested in pet ownership to ensure that pets remain stimulated? This is so that they do not develop behavioural problems that will likely end in an animal being given to a shelter. Most importantly, Abrahams says, pet ownership is a big responsibility. “Animals have little choice as to where they find themselves and it is the owners’ responsibility and duty to ensure that they do not take on animals that they cannot care for effectively and responsibly. “We strongly oppose giving animals as gifts for all the reasons above.” V For advice on pet-ownership, contact the SPCA on 021 700 4140.

Diabetes: Don’t become a statistic D

iabetes is an ongoing epidemic that continues to plague the lives of ordinary Capetonians and which is already causing more deaths than HIV and tuberculosis (TB). “Deaths are still on the rise. The number of newly affected are increasing and those that are affected are getting younger and younger. This new epidemic – diseases of lifestyle – is caused by a number of factors, including unhealthy diets, obesity and lack of sufficient exercise,” says Dr Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health. Diabetes is one of the major diseases of lifestyle and is currently the number one natural cause of death in the Western Cape. “About 10% of our adult population currently have diabetes and this will increase to 20% by 2040. It is estimated that, in 20 years, one in five people will have diabetes,” says Badroodien. “The very worrying statistic is that the younger generation is being increasingly affected. Type 2 diabetes which accounts for around 90% of diabetes can be largely prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle.” Badroodien says that the United Nations (UN) passed a resolution in 2006 to designate 14 November as World Diabetes Day. The occasion is aimed to raise awareness of diabetes, its prevention and complications, and the care that people with the condition need. “The theme for this year’s World Diabetes Day and Diabetes month is the ‘Family and Diabetes’. The aim is to raise awareness of the impact that diabetes has on the family

and the support network of those affected,” says Badroodien. “It also aims to promote the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of diabetes. If you live with diabetes, it doesn’t only impact you, it impacts your family as well. It’s crucial that families act together to tackle this epidemic.” One in two people with diabetes don’t know they have it, and most have Type 2 diabetes. Left untreated or poorly managed, it can lead to life-changing complications like blindness, amputations, kidney failure, heart attacks and strokes. “Diabetes was responsible for four million deaths in 2017 globally. Families are urged to learn more about the warning signs as

The programme has been piloted at eight clinics across the metropole and residents can enquire from their closest facility where they can join the challenge, which has also become an integral part of the City’s health promotions calendar and outreach programme. Residents can also consult their local community centre to find out what fitness programmes are on offer by the City’s recreation and parks departments. “We strongly advise you to use all these available resources in order to diagnose and treat you and your family (young or old) early in order to prevent all the serious complications which could result in long-term disability, poor quality of life and even death,” says Badroodien.

Education on diabetes prevention and treatment as well as routine screening and risk assessment services are available at all City clinics,” he says. “Our community services and health directorate also rolled out the Live Well Challenge a year ago to raise awareness about what constitutes healthy eating, and to provide access to regular exercise opportunities at our community facilities.”

By doing the #FafChallenge during November and getting screened for testicular cancer, our Springbok Rugby World Cup champions have raised awareness of the need for men to have regular health check-ups. Movember is observed annually as part of the international campaign to build awareness about men’s health issues such as prostate and testicular cancer. The Western Cape government health urges men, particularly those who are over 40 years old, to go for a check-up at least once a year. Prostate and testicular cancers, especially when not detected early, can lead to difficult treatment, sterility, and even potentially a lifetime of hormone replacement therapy. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in South African men. This form of cancer is life threatening if left untreated. Symptoms of prostate cancer include: . A need to urinate frequently, especially at night . Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine . Weak or interrupted flow of urine . Painful or burning urination . Difficulty in having an erection . Painful ejaculation . Blood in urine or semen . Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged 15 to 35 years old. It starts as an abnormal growth or tumour that develops in one or both testicles.

There are several types of testicular cancer, but the most common is the germ cell tumour. Symptoms of testicular cancer include: . A lump or swelling in the testicle . An increase in the firmness of a testicle . A difference between one testicle and the other . A dull ache or sharp pain in your testicles or scrotum, which may come and go . A feeling of heaviness in your scrotum Here’s how to perform a self-exam: . Set aside five minutes while you’re in the shower. A warm shower will relax the scrotum and the muscles holding the testicles, making an exam easier. . Starting with one side, gently roll the scrotum with your fingers to feel the surface of the testicle. . Check for any lumps, bumps or unusual features. Contrary to what many assume, cancerous tumours typically aren’t painful. . Make note of any changes in size over time. While the most common symptom of testicular cancer is a painless mass, some men experience swelling of the testicles and scrotum. . Switch sides and check the other testicle too. If you notice a lump or any changes as mentioned above, you should seek medical advice and schedule an appointment immediately. Testicular cancer can spread very quickly and if detected early is one of the most curable cancers. Making daily healthy choices will improve your health and quality of life.

I encourage motorists to take full advantage of the opportunity to clear their record, especially ahead of the upcoming holiday season when they find themselves on the road more frequently,” says Mayco member for corporate services, Sharon Cottle. Motorists are reminded to take along their identity documents and a copy of the fines and warrant for which they would like to make representations. It is important to note that there will be no blanket reduction. Each representation made will be considered on its own merits by prosecutors.

The popular traffic fines roadshow which is run by the City of Cape Town’s legal services department together with the City’s traffic service will return to the Cape Town Civic Centre for the final run this year. The roadshow opened yesterday (Monday 9 December) and will continue until Friday 13 December between 08:00 to 14:00. A team consisting of administrative staff, prosecutors and traffic officers will be on the concourse level of the civic centre to assist motorists with their fines and/or warrants of arrest. The public will also have an opportunity to make enquiries about outstanding fines and to settle outstanding fines and warrants. Prosecutors will be on standby to consid-
