he founder of Omegaview Community Project, John Nicholson, will undergo a journey that few will attempt in their lifetime. Taking his first step on Wednesday 1 April, he will set off on a 500km walk stretching from his home in Lavender Hill to George. Since the establishment in 2011 of the local Siyafunda backyard library and after-school programme – run from his home at 1 Sunflower Road – Nicholson has gotten to know the children in the community and their circumstances. The library provides children with a space to escape the ills they may face at home or school, allowing them to delve into a book. However, the library has faced hard times recently. People’s Post reported that the library was re-opened this year (“Library up and run-

on his love of walking. In the past two months, he’s completed two walks through Cape Town. “When I do walk, I walk to Wynberg (about 10km) – I did that now the other day, three weeks ago. Before that, I have walked to Plumstead (about 8km). The furthest I’ve walked is to Salt River (about 20km) last month – just for the fun of it.” A friend, who briefly passed by during the interview, said regardless of how testing the journey might be, he had the utmost confidence in Nicholson. “You’re never too old. You are going to regret it and you’re going to try and turn around, but I know you. You can do it,” he said. His wife, Gail, has expressed her concern for the walk but, overall, he has his family’s support. Nicholson’s son, Ryan, says he may very well join his dad on the long walk. HEATHFIELD

Get off the fence, learners plea RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

O

n Saturday 29 February, the learners at Heathfield High School (HHS) called on the community to stand with them in the fight for a new school fence. They lined the roads with signs to inform the community about the sorry state of their school’s fencing. According to the school principal, Wesley Neumann, and the councillor for ward 72, Kevin Southgate, the fight for a new fence has been ongoing for about eight years, with

Southgate spearheading the appeals to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). In a recent media statement, Neumann said: “The school fence is porous and nonexistent in certain areas along the boundary of the school.” He added that it had not been replaced in 59 years. In a previous interview, he told People’s Post (“Vandalism, theft on the rise at school”, 28 January) that the holes in the fence posed a serious security risk for the children and had facilitated the theft of crucial teaching tools. “The perpetrators can easily gain access to the school grounds as the school fence

is in dire need of replacement and repair, and huge holes therein allows for this. The thieves easily gain access to classrooms by breaking through the asbestos roof and entering through the ceiling. This modus operandi was used in approximately 25 break-ins that occurred at HHS,” Neumann explained. Southgate said one of the reasons for the delay in replacing it is because the school is categorised as a Quintile 5 school. Schools in the poorest communities are classified as Quintile 1 and schools serving the wealthiest communities are classified as Quintile 5. This benchmark affects the school allocation amount that the government believes is the minimum needed by each learner. “We’ve been told there’s a long list of

schools in need of new fencing. As a result, we have to wait our turn,” said Southgate. Neumann said: “Ironically, the school is erroneously classified as a Quintile 5 school which means that the school, with its limited funds, must try and repair or replace the stolen and damaged equipment ourselves.” According to Southgate, the demonstration by learners came after the school was approved for a partial fencing upgrade during that month. But locals deemed the solution inappropriate for the problem. The school started a petition on the day too. It hoped to get 1 000 signatures over a month. It ended up getting 2 200 in 72 hours. The petition is meant to be sent to the WCED in support of the school’s cause.

oniston Park and Steenberg residents have taken it upon themselves to show the senior citizens of the community some love and appreciation by launching the Shercon Seniors Social Club. About 55 seniors attended the launch of the club on Wednesday 4 March. They were treated to a plate of eats, entertainment by local dancers and singers, as well as manicures and pedicures offered by unemployed youth. Chair of the social club Denise Southgate explained the motive behind the establishment of the club. “We wanted to get the seniors out of their homes, and for them to come and mix with other senior people. “It won’t be something where they will just sit around and do nothing; there will be games, sing-alongs and all kinds of different things to do,” she said. Getting them out of their homes for a few hours each week will allow them to take a break from their usual routines. “We’re planning to take them to the beach as well. “We’ll be doing all these things, just for three hours each time, to get them away from their children and to come and have a relaxing day here. We’ve got people coming to do the pedicures and the manicures; we had a lady here talking about child abuse,” said Southgate. Ward 68 councillor Marita Petersen attended the launch. She talked to the crowd about upcoming projects in her ward and encouraged the seniors to participate in public meetings so she is better able to address their needs and concerns. She also activated her Life Counts youth club members to assist the club’ executive committee in setting up the venue, serving food and more. “I’m working with the youth and those are the ones who do your nails and such. I want you to have a good time and I want you to participate in the clubs,” said Petersen. Southgate also encouraged the residents to attend every club meeting, and said: “Seniors also just want to have fun,” she said. V The group meets at the Coniston Park recreation centre, between Wagner Way and Diamond Drive, on Military Road every Wednesday.

Baby’s body found at dump site RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

A

case of concealment of birth was opened at the Muizenberg police station last week after the body of a baby was found at the False Bay landfill site. Police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk confirmed the incident. “Muizenberg police is investigating a case of concealment of birth and an inquest into the circumstances of the death of an infant – who appeared to be a newborn baby – whose body was found at about 07:30 on Wednesday 4 March.”

EARLY B

DR VICTOR

& THE RASTA REBELS

According to Van Wyk, Law Enforcement officers found the body. People’s Post reported last year on the Baby Savers available locally (“Gruesome fetus discovery”, People’s Post, 3 December 2019) There are five Baby Saver locations in the Western Cape: Bellville, Lavender Hill, Sun Valley, Somerset West and Grabouw. A Baby Saver is a metal container usually built into a sidewall of a safe house and it is hoped that mothers, should they find themselves in such desperate circumstances that they feel there is no other option but to abandon their newborn baby, will use the Baby Saver.

They can place the baby inside the box and once it is shut an alarm alerts a nearby responder about the infant inside. The mother’s identity will remain unknown. But there are also other avenues available to desperate mothers before the situation escalates to abandonment. Tracey Aitken, the founder of the Zoe Project, is located at the Retreat maternity and obstetrics unit at the Retreat Community Health Centre. Here, she and her staff members can counsel mothersto-be and assist them where needed. “We hope to meet mothers in distress before they reach that point,” she said. “We’re here for the mom

and the baby. We are known for helping with alternative options like adoption. At that point (wanting to abandon a newborn baby), the mom is usually mentally unstable – whether it’s because of drugs or whatever. So it’s not so much about the mom but the community and to find out why she does not feel supported.” They aim to tackle each case with compassion and care for the mother’s circumstances. The investigation into the discovery of the infant’s body at the False Bay landfill site is still under way, says Van Wyk. V For assistance, call The Zoe Project on 073 174 1992.

Promotion nears I

n the Western Province Cricket Association’s first division competition, Green Point took a step nearer to winning promotion to the premier league following a 26run win over United. Green Point batted first and was in deep trouble at 85/8 but intelligent batting by tail ender Josh Savage (23) not out saw them recover to 130 all out. At their turn to bat, United was well placed at 83/4, but Simon Morris (3/12) in 10 overs initiated a middle-order collapse and they could only muster 106. Kraaifontein remain in the hunt for promotion with a narrow 1-run win over Ottomans, while Rylands also enhanced their chances of promotion with a bonus-point win over Gugulethu. In the premier league, UCT scored another upset with a 1-wicket win over log leaders Cape Town Cricket Club. The students did well to dismiss Cape Town for 120. But in reply, the students lost wickets in clusters and were in dire straits at 100/9, but an undefeated 21 by Mathew Rudston which included a winning six saw them snatch victory. Rondebosch are the new log leaders following their 8-wicket win over Strandfontein. Selected results: Premier league: Brackenfell beat Victoria by 8 wickets. Victoria 70 (Brandon Viret 4/13, Ettienne Jewell 4/20, Jade Adams 2/18). Brackenfell 73/2 (Michael Loubser 25, Jade Adams 20). Durbanville beat WPCC by 1 wicket. Softball finalé awaits NOORE NACERODIEN

W

estridge Yankees’ recent form in the women’s super league of the Cape Town Softball Association and the recent defeat of Lavender Hill against Glenthorn A’s, has set the scene for an exciting end to the season. While Yankees was on a break the past weekend, Lavender Hill disposed of Kenfac Phillies with a 6-2 victory. This brought Lavender Hill level with Yankees on 42 points. The two teams meet in the grand finale of the league competition, set for 18:00 on Saturday 14 March at the Turfhall Softball Stadium. The winner also has an added opportunity for the coveted double when the two teams meet again on Sunday in the knockout (KO) final. All five of Yankees’ teams will be seen in action in the KO on Sunday 15 March. The women’s major league team can add the KO trophy to their league title when they face Table View Tornados. In a weekend of many possible doubles, First League champions Glenthorn A’s face Khayelitsha Eagles and Silvertree Titans, the second league winners, hope to do likewise when they play Table View Tornados on Sunday.

Yankees face Khayelitsha Superstars in the third league KO after annexing the league title. Not to be outdone by their club-mates, Yankees’ men also have a chance to clinch the potential double when they play Hamiltons in the men’s major league KO final. The double is dependent on the outcome, not known at the time of going to print, of the league game played last night between Khayelitsha Eagles and Hamiltons. A Hammies victory will seal the league for Yankees. The Yankees’ second league men’s side face Heideveld Yankees in their final. Fixtures: League: Saturday 14 March: Super League: 14:00: Heideveld Yankees vs Falcons; 16:00 Kenfac Phillies vs Glenthorn A’s; 18:00 A Lavender Hill vs Westridge Yankees First League: 14:00: Panthers vs Glenthorn A’s; 14:00: Battswood vs Blackheath; 15:30: St Martins vs Lavender Hill; 17:00: Crusaders vs Khayelitsha Eagles; 17:00: Panthers vs Blackheath Second League: 14:00: Kenfac Phillies vs Silvertree Titans;
