Community mourns boy RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

n Wednesday 6 November, Hillwood Primary School held an emotional remembrance ceremony for Cameron Davids, the 14-year-old Lavender Hill boy who was gunned down in a gang-related incident on Friday 1 November.

According to Pastor Basil Leukes, the incident happened at midday as Cameron rode his bicycle in Lavender Hill. It is alleged a gang member, armed with a gun, approached the Grade 7 learner and instructed him to take him to the territory of a rival gang on his bicycle.

A shootout ensued during which Cameron fled to the corner of St Simon Street and St Christopher Avenue, where it is alleged rival gang members shot him.

Sgt Wesley Twigg, the spokesperson for Steenberg police, confirmed the incident.

“According to reports, the victim was chased by four unknown suspects who shot him. The suspects fled the scene.

A case of murder was opened.”

The community speculates that the rival gang assumed Cameron belonged to the same gang as the man who held him at gunpoint.

His mother, Natasha, said she was at a loss for words.

“I’m going to miss his jokes and the music – he loved to play music for me from his phone,” she said.

Learners in his grade read tributes, mentioning Cameron’s playful nature.

His teacher, Bruce Asia, shared the same sentiment, adding that he was not prepared for the news he received on Friday.

“On Friday afternoon, when I heard the news, I asked: ‘Did I tell Cameron that I love him? Did I tell him that the Lord loves him?’”

His peers shared stories of the last time they saw him on Thursday 31 October and together they mourned the loss of their friend.

A family member, who was a father figure to Cameron, said his death opened up wounds that have barely had a chance to heal.

“They shot his father – Cameron was with me at the time – and we changed

our lives when his father died. He was like my own son. My son was also killed two years ago in gang violence – we’re still mourning the death of our son and yet again, a child has died.”

He said Cameron was preparing for his Grade 7 prom and had asked to use his new car to drive him there.

He added that Salt River morgue was busy on Monday 4 November when the family went to identify the body.

Other Lavender Hill residents were there, all with the same task following a spate of violent crimes this past month.

“We as the community just have to sit here and watch our young people die,” he said. “The government is failing us.

Our ward councillors are failing us.

And the gangsters are winning. If they are locked up today, then by tomorrow, they’re out.”

Cameron’s death follows that of sixyear-old Nathlia Pienaar who was gunned down while skipping rope in Lavender Hill in late August.

Grant-in-aid applications extended The City of Cape Town has extended the application period for public benefit organisations (PBOs) and non-profit organisations (NPOs) to apply for grants-in-aid until 20 January 2020.

By applying for this financial assistance these organisations can continue to receive assistance for the current financial year after changes to national legislation limited the options available to the City to give rates rebates.

The City has thus found a way to help these organisations despite the nationally mandated amendments.

Amendments to the local government: municipal property rates act necessitated a substantial change to the City’s Rates Policy to bring it in line with the amendments.

Government: Municipal Property Rates Act, the City was required to institute new property categories and align its rebates, reductions and exemptions to the amended national legislation. The amendments were implemented simultaneously with a new General Valuation 2018 Roll, which came into effect on Friday 1 July. . Previously, generous relief was granted, particularly to PBOs and NPOs. Unfortunately, how the rates rebates for these organisations was traditionally assessed and granted is no longer permitted due to the changes in legislation. . The City has, therefore, identified the grant-in-aid process as a mechanism to continue providing financial relief to the affected organisations. A dedicated amount has been budgeted for additional grants-in-aid.

PBOs and NPOs within the City’s boundaries are encouraged to take advantage of the extension and to apply, irrespective of whether they fall within the new properties owned by PBO and used for specified public benefit activities property category or not.

“The City will continue to provide assistance where it can, despite these nationally mandated amendments.

“It was, therefore, important to extend the application period to ensure as many of these organisation as possible have the opportunity to apply for financial assistance,” says Mayco member for finance, Ian Neilson.

“Due to the critical and important work that they do, we feel that it is essential to continue providing support to PBOs and NPOs. “Their contribution to the well-being of our city and its people is invaluable and they can rely on our continued support. We have identified grants-in-aid as an alternative option to continue providing support and I would like to encourage these organisations to make use of the application period extension and to apply.”

The 2019 edition of the Twilight Run will raise awareness of gender-based violence.

Run to stand against violence One of Cape Town’s most popular events returns to the city’s streets next month.

The Twilight Run, which is organised by the Community Chest, normally marks the start of the December party season, but this year’s event has a much more serious goal in mind.

“The 2019 edition of the Twilight Run will again attract thousands of Capetonians and visitors to the 5km route that winds its way around our streets. We are inviting everyone to join us this year as we take a stand against gender-based violence,” says Lorenzo Davids, CEO of Community Chest.

“We regard it as a moral obligation to continue the fight against gender-based violence. On Tuesday 3 December, we aim to create one of the largest public events to honour the thousands of women and children that have been affected by femicide, abuse, neglect, rape and brutality.”

The entity invites all the companies, schools, organisations, families and private citizens and specifically fathers, brothers, uncles, nephews, colleagues, CEOs, religious leaders and male friends, and their partners to enter the run on behalf of all women.

“Twilight has always been one of the most inclusive events of the year, attracting corporates, small businesses, organisations, schools, families and individuals in a festive atmosphere that guaranteed participants a good time, in aid of a good cause,” says Davids. “This year will be no different as Community Chest invites you to join the 2019 event and become a superhero as an act of solidarity against gender-based violence.

Two organisations will benefit from the money raised through this year’s event, and they will be present at the event to receive their cheques from us.”

The event will enjoy the support of media personality Tracey Lange, Obama Fellow and founder, and executive director of Women Lead Movement Melene Rossouw, as well as the comedian Yaaseen Barnes.

Entertainment on the day will be provided by Jarrad Ricketts and Paxton, as well as up-and-coming singer, Ameer Hendricks.

The event sets off at 19:00, and all finishers will be awarded Twilight Medals.

Omegaview project ready to embrace the new year RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

A

community initiative in Hillview, launched 17 years ago, has proven that hard times can’t keep it down. Having pushed through adversity, it is now looking to 2020 for more blessings.

The Omegaview Community Project was started almost two decades ago to address a need in the underprivileged community.

“In 2002, it began as a soup kitchen. We started feeding five children but it increased to 10, then 15 and eventually to just under 100. We also decided we needed to expand and we did that with our backyard library,” says John Nicholson, founder of the project.

With the support of his wife, Gail; their sons, Ryan (26) and Chadwin (24); Dorothy Zeederberg and other volunteers, the everevolving project provides several services to the community.

The soup kitchen is open every Monday and Thursday, depending on donations. The library is open after school until 16:00 every Monday and Friday.

“When you feed a child, there’s no point in just feeding the tummy and not the mind,” John says.

A cycling club was also formed which is run mainly during school holidays. “If the areas are safe, we take them to Muizenberg and Kalk Bay, have a little swim and then come back.”

The group also assists the elderly during emergencies, but hope to expand on this ser-

vice.

“We have a huge problem in our area; our seniors are neglected. My dream is to own a combi. If we can be blessed with a combi, I would like to get one of my sons to drive our senior members around – to the hospital, shopping, for their tablets,” he says.

Two years ago, the project decided to also reach out to the youth, A band called Intermezzo was formed. Ryan and Chadwin play the trumpets.

Hard times struck when the library facility lost its roof last year but Biblionef, a nonprofit organisation that donates books, came to the aid of the project; providing a new roof fitted less than two months ago.

Despite a lack of funding and various challenges, the project has continued to serve the community. And next year, John and his family hope to do even more.

“We want to expand the sewing and upholstery programme so that we can create an income for the ladies and the project itself.

“Our mission is simple: we want to eradicate poverty,” he explains.

Women participating in the programme sew shopping bags, children’s clothes and suits.

ollowing the break-in, vandalism and theft at Retreat Library on Saturday 2 November, the City of Cape Town is making provisions to provide library users with the materials they need.

This incident marks the 31st library vandalism incident in the city.

According to a statement by the City, there have been 58 insurance claims since January this year, totalling nearly R578 000, before the vandalism at Retreat Library.

“This incident will take our claims close to R1 million, which is unacceptable. This is money which could have been spent on much-needed resources or other critical community services,” Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health, said in the statement.

She added: “There’s extra security there now, but it’s a vicious cycle that we don’t have control over. It’s really sad that it (the library) must be closed down because of vandalism – especially now when the matriculants are writing and they’re doing a reading programme and the after-school programme.

They were doing a lot of good things there.”

In the interim, she encourages library users to make use of the libraries in Grassy Park, Ottery and Lotus River.

Rossouw said she understood that transportation costs could present a problem. To relieve this issue, she said: “We’re going to utilise the mobile libraries so we can assist the learners who want books, but, unfortu-

Twigg said on the library staff’s arrival at work on Monday 4 November, they found the exit door open. After investigation, the staff found that computer equipment to the value of R138 000 had been stolen.

The City statement added the burglary took place despite four layers of security at the library.

Since the previous burglary, the stone guards had been redone and additional strips of metal burglar bars were fitted over the stone guards. The thieves vandalised cupboards in an attempt to gain access.

“They tried to take the safe but must have realised it was too heavy. The thieves took four new mini SmartCape computers which had been locked in a cage, an additional four computers and a monitor, as well as a SmartCape monitor and printer,” the statement read.

L

ocal women have expressed their gratitude to Women for Change, a City of Cape Town initiative, for taking them out of their comfort zones and giving them a sense of purpose once more – an especially important task in the under-resourced communities in the southern suburbs.

The initiative was launched by the City’s social development and early childhood development department in 2016 to allow women to take ownership of their communities and to help bring about change.

In ward 110, the initiative unites women from Lavender Hill, Grassy Park, Retreat and Steenberg to provide assistance to community organisations and to empower them through the City’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

Victoria Booysen from Lavender Hill and Gisela Gordon from Grassy Park are two of its new members.

Booysen says: “It’s a very good initiative.

They take women from their comfort zones to empower them when they are finished and – some of us coming from the background of abuse – they are helping us to see that we can be something bigger than where

we come from.”

Booysen says the programme is very supportive, taking each woman through each step of the process and training to enable them to serve their organisation as best they can.

Gordon adds: “We are extremely grateful that the City of Cape Town put through an initiative like this, because with the women abuse going on at the moment, I think this is something that will make a positive change.”

The initiative provides professional development to women in these communities; assigning them to assist at early childhood development centres, non-government organisations, community development centres, schools and more.

The women are trained in leadership, disaster risk management, wellness and health promotion, solid waste management, domestic violence and self-defence to carry out the necessary tasks at each organisation and to earn a salary – some for the first time in their lives.

According to Gordon, strengthening women is the key to success: “If you help one woman, you help an entire community – and I think that this is so needed in this community.”

tarting out in a basement in Kommetjie, Diamond Thug has continued to create their unique brand of “intelligent and creative electronic music” since its formation in 2012. And this December they will take to the Parklife stage to immerse fans in The Woods and beyond.

The band members Danilo Querios, Teddy Buxton, Adrian Culhane and Chanel Van T hail from South Africa’s two major cities, Johannesburg and Cape Town. They began making music in Chanel’s basement, played their first gigs in 2013 and, later that year, took off on their first tour.

Now, six years later, they have been touring the world and that has made for some great inspiration.

According to Chanel, her time in the French Alps was able to elicit the right emotions to create their new single, The Woods.

adding the single was recorded a few months ago after their European tour.

Telling the love story in The Woods is not all they’ve had on their plate recently – they’re cooking up something new to impress audiences.

“We are getting giddy and excited about a few demo tracks. It’s sort of like the toddler phase of these songs. We’ll be prepping some of these new songs of ours to play for the first time (at Parklife).”

Chanel says they’re looking forward to being seaside on Sunday 1 December at the Parklife Gourmet Food and Music Festival and to sharing the stage with such a unique line-up.

“All the artists performing are talented and successful in each of their individual niches and we are excited to watch each of them – it’s great to see everyone on the same stage.”

She adds: “I think I’m personally most excited to watch Sons of The East as I was lucky enough to watch them in Madrid a few months ago.

“I did not know their music then and they had an incredible stage presence. I look forward to seeing them play to a South African crowd.”

The food and music festival will take place at Muizenberg Park in Cape Town with performers Jeremy Loops, Matthew Mole, Sons of the East (Australia), Sean Koch and Diamond Thug taking to the stage to entertain audiences.

Breathe in... exhale... and relax Local multimedia artist Karen Wykerd will open her solo exhibition, Exhale, this November at The Studio Art Gallery in Simon’s Town.

In a departure from her usual subject matter, Wykerd leaves the busy streets of the city behind to explore the abundance of nature around Cape Town: capturing calm spaces where you can take a moment to exhale and let out the stresses of your daily life.

She explores the moments spent picturing the warmth of the sun, its light glimmering through the leaves; the feel of water on her skin; the sound of wind rustling through branches and waves sighing on to the shore.

In Exhale, a selection of paintings on canvas, wooden blocks and hand-marbled paper will be showcased. The process is an im-

portant part of the body of work, with elements of chance at play, acknowledging the necessity of exploring the unfamiliar to gain insight.

This tranquil collection of works uses Wykerd’s recognisable translucent washes of colour around figures swimming, strolling and floating to create scenes of immersion in nature. The dreamily indistinct backgrounds and tranquil colour palette combine to give the viewers of her works moments of rest and reflection where they can be reacquainted with nature, and themselves.

The exhibition will run from Thursday 14 to Wednesday 27 November, with the official opening taking place on Saturday 16 November at 15:00.

Taxi challenges examined at workshop In an effort to resolve challenges facing the taxi industry, I held an intergovernmental workshop on public transport with the City of Cape Town.

The workshop follows my commitment after a meeting with the leadership of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) last month where we addressed challenges facing the taxi industry.

These challenges include the issuing of operating licences for minibus taxis, metre taxis and the issue of identification of e-hailing.

In preparation for a formal consultation

with the taxi industry, the province and the City clarified processes and procedures around the issuing of operating licences and other related matters.

Considerable progress was made which will enable me to take the matter forward with the taxi industry.

I am committed to finding amicable solutions within the ambit of the law to ensure that people are transported to work safely and improve efficiency in the minibus-taxi industry which contributes massively to our economy.

Musical’s message encourages youth to make positive choices This weekend I took 350 youth from areas across Cape Town to see the David Kramer musical, Danger In The Dark.

The musical has important lessons for the youth of today, especially those living in communities where crime and violence are challenges. Danger in the Dark covers themes of domestic violence, gangsterism and drug abuse. There are many City programmes which work to address these challenges and we hope the youngsters

who see this show will be inspired to make positive choices in their life, be aware of the dangers of making the wrong choices, and instead work hard to succeed at their schooling and life.

For the last financial year, 2 258 screenings were conducted at the City’s matrix sites with the clean drug test rate for clients at 83% during the same period. The treatment is free of charge.

ed-hot action filled the track at the Killarney International Speedway at the weekend with the final and deciding round of the World Rallycross (World RX) championship.

In the end, Sweden’s Timmy Hansen was crowned as champion on account of a count-back of wins over Norway’s Andreas Bakkerud.

The Cape Town crowd was treated to a spectacular and bruising season finale as the two ended on even points, with Bakkerud second in the race behind winner Niclas Grönholm and Hansen in fourth behind Timur Timerzianov after 60 races in 10 countries on four continents throughout the year.

Timmy (Peugeot) arrived in Cape Town just a single world championship point clear of title rival Bakkerud (Audi) and younger Hansen brother and teammate Kevin another five points back in third.

After the qualifying rounds and semi-finals, Timmy’s championship lead was only two points, with just the final left to race and eight points on the table.

Timmy started the final from pole position from Bakkerud, Grönholm, Kevin, Timur Timerzianov and Timo Scheider as the

top six lined up two-by-two to decide the world championship over six scintillating laps in sweltering heat to the backdrop of Table Mountain.

Bakkerud made a perfect start to lead from a combative Timmy, but the three world championship contenders became embroiled in a controversial incident, when Timmy made a move on Bakkerud and the two tangled and went off as Kevin also went off in avoidance at the bottom hairpin.

The upshot was that Grönholm led the way from the recovered Bakkerud, Timerzianov and the similarly recovered Timmy, who had made quick work of a struggling Scheider to take a vital fourth place.

Kevin then had a second spectacular incident at the same corner where he, his brother and Bakkerud had collided on the opening lap, as Grönholm led a disgruntled Bakkerud, Timerzianov and a limping Kevin home after Scheider ground to a halt.

“It sounds fantastic — almost unreal that you call me world champion,” Timmy responded to a question on his taking the title.

“I am super happy for the sport - the last race with everything on the line was nervewrecking, but I kept focussing and deliv-

ered a strong performance race by race through the weekend — there was no room for error — not the smallest mistake.

“I know Andreas is upset,” said Timmy. referring to the final race incident.

“I went for the inside, it was a hard move and it still needs to be investigated, but this season is the best in my career with four race wins and now the title — it’s a dream come true and I am so happy for the team — we are first and third in the drivers title with Kevin and me and we are makers champions too — the car has been brilliant every race. I still can’t yet take it in!”

“I am proud of myself — I won the battle today — the best reaction at the start to lead away,” Bakkerud admitted.

“But unfortunately I will not comment more after what happened and I just want to say huge thanks to my team and our sponsor and to everyone else — especially Cape Town — it was fantastic as always — Thank you South Africa. For the rest, right now I don’t really care.”

In other action, Swede Oliver Eriksson delivered a dominant RX2 victory over Jamaican Fraser McConnell and Sami-Matti Trogen, to wrap up that title over Ben-Philip Gundersen, who pipped Jesse Kallio to

the title second, while Zak Groenewald took local BMW E36 Cup honours.

Also Shaun Cope won the front-wheel drive class in his VW Golf and rally lass Megan Verlaque took Speedcar buggy honours.

Locals like Saadiqah Alexander of Belgravia lapped up the action.

“The family is all into drifting, that’s how we grew up. My father has a Honda S2000 and a Nissan 350Z, so we are into cars. We always come watch. So we have been here a couple of times.

We just watched all the rallies, we liked the BMWs,” she said.

South African motorsport legend Sarel van der Merwe was also in attendance: “It is wonderful having a world championship in South Africa in motorsport. I think it is the most exciting form of motorsport anyway, because there are so many good drivers,” he said, adding that he wished World RX was around during his competitive racing days, and implored locals to keep supporting the event in the future.

“They should just know that it is one of the most exciting events in the country, so I don’t know why they just don’t pitch up.”
