Sibelius learns the ropes RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

G

rade 9 learners at Sibelius High School took a walk in firefighters’ shoes – literally – to learn more about their role in the community. The high school’s deputy principal Fuad Viljoen said the opportunity for learners to participate in a five-hour-long fire and safety course was one they could not pass up. “Our school isn’t only about preparing learners for Grade 12 but also developing them holistically in terms of preparing them for the world of work. “That’s why we grabbed the opportunity with both hands, and I think the learners thoroughly enjoyed themselves,” he says.

A Western Cape education department initiative, the course was hosted by SA Fire Watch, a compliance company that provides a range of services in the fire industry, at its Ottery Youth Care Centre. Philip Jackson, the teacher who accompanied the learners, said the course shifted their paradigms, made them safety-conscious and equipped them with a set of vital skills. “Often, especially in summer, there are quite a few fires – particularly in the informal settlement. “(It’s valuable) because of what is happening in our vicinities – and to empower them in the community in case of fire,” said Jackson. Viljoen added that many of the children came from Overcome Heights where a large

number of shacks had been lost to fires this year. Jackson said their newfound knowledge would also play an invaluable role in case of a fire or a fire-related emergency at the school. He said they planned to carry out fire drills to keep the training fresh in learners’ minds. Both Viljoen and Jackson thanked the organisations that made this possible for their learners, adding that it ignited an interest in school which many learners did not have before. “It was an amazing experience and they wanted to learn more. The learners were asking the firefighters which school subjects they needed to become firefighters – maths, physics and chemistry,” Jackson said. .

Grade 9 learners from Sibelius High School were given the opportunity to learn about fire and safety.

Protesters face off against police in Vrygrond TARIRO WASHINYIRA

P

rotesters, many of them children, faced off against the police in Vrygrond on Monday 7 October, throwing bricks and bottles, and the police firing rubber bullets and tear gas in return. Protesters burned tyres and rubble at the intersection of Prince George and Vrygrond avenues. Schools were closed and vehicles, including ambulances, were blocked from entering or exiting the suburb. Two other groups burned tyres, chanted and sang in front of Capricorn Primary School, GroundUp reports. The protesters want law enforcement officials to stop demolishing their shacks in Xakabantu and a solution to the transport problem between Vrygrond and Blue Route Mall in Tokai. At the time of the protest, taxis from Vrygrond were not allowed to park at the mall and they want the City of Cape Town to facilitate dialogue between mall management and the Vrygrond Development Forum. They were also demanding the release of three community leaders who were arrested in the morning. Provincial police spokesperson Mihlali Majikela said a case of public violence had been opened for investigation. By late afternoon, Malusi Booi, the City’s Mayco member for human settlements, had agreed to meet with the residents. Resident Thandiswa Mabona said the protest had been triggered by the demolition of about 50 shacks in Xakabantu on Thursday 3 October. “But in June, Booi promised us that there will be no more demolitions.” However, Booi told GroundUp in an email that no such promises were made. “The court has granted a final order to the City to prevent the illegal occupation of the land in question.” Mabona said the shack he used to share

He lost a month’s groceries, a TV, a decoder, clothes and building material. Sive Mlungwana, a resident from nearby Overcome Heights, said he owned a brick house but was there to support the protesters. He added the shacks that law enforcement officials had demolished cost about R1 000 to R1 500 to build and many families had sacrificed to raise money for building materials. He also complained there was no fire brigade in the area. “When there is a fire, it takes them about three hours to reach here. We don’t have a police station and high school.” Community leader Mike Khumalo said the demolitions had been going on since 2016. The land the residents wanted had been identified as a nature reserve without consulting the people who were occupying it, he added. Robin Carlisle of the Marina Da Gama Association addressed the protesters at Capricorn Primary School, calling for peace. “We are neighbours. We are standing together with the Vrygrond community. Officials should come down and listen to your grievances. We also want a police station, and for the problem of poor transport to be solved.” The protesters responded: “The neighbours should come and toyi-toyi with us.” Booi said the City was “mindful of the acute need for housing opportunities across the metro. “We are making every effort to address this matter and to provide services within a planned and fair manner wherever possible within the constraints that are being experienced. We condemn in the strongest possible terms any protest action that is not peaceful and that affects the rights of lawabiding residents,” he added. – Tariro Washinyira (News24) Diana Vandeyar. Steenberg, Lavender Hill and residents from nearby marched against gender-based violence.

STEENBERG

Still fighting against GBV RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

W

hile the buzz about gender-based violence (GBV) may have died down since the nation-wide protests that took place last month, Engedi Christian Church members in conjunction with African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) are still trying to raise awareness of the plight of women. During the headlining protests, the City of Cape Town began to shift their focus from saving women from GBV to educating men on how to treat women. The departments of social development and early childhood development rolled out their Men’s Programme to all areas of the city last month. “The Men’s Programme aims to change behaviour by unpacking the complexities that characterise the epidemic that is gender-based violence. “Men must be included in the interventions within communities,” said the Mayco member for community services and

health, Zahid Badroodien, in statement. To this end, members of the church and the ACDP marched at the corner of Prince George Drive and Military Road on Saturday 28 September, displaying signs with the messages: “stop rape” and “men, stand up!” to continue in the fight against GBV. Dr Malcom Jacobs, provincial chairman for the party, explained: “We wanted to express our disgust for how women are being treated – not that we are against men, but we want to urge men to respect and help the women.” He said their demonstrations were not only to highlight the violence, but also to encourage men to take a stand against other men who commit these acts. “Every community can have a dynamic community when a man can just support his woman and not to look at them as sexual objects. They haven’t been given a guideline on what the role of a woman is,” he said. He said in the down-trodden communities of Steenberg, Lavender Hill, Seawinds and surrounds, where domestic violence is so

common, this is where emphasis should be placed on educating men especially. “We need to drive more visibility programmes. We need to get more community involvement where we can call the men together to make them understand how important they are. We must drive something for the men too.” “We’ve got men-based group-support groups where we do spiritual meetings and we do support in terms of their roles as men. There are more men that came forward to be part of our groups,” said Jacobs. The programmes include counselling, mentorship and upliftment projects where the men work together to paint schools and build homes for the elderly, among other things. Jacobs said the change that is needed will come as a result of circumstances. “It’s not that they want to act like that. They’ve been damaged – damaged from when they were boys.” V For more info on the men’s programmes, contact Joey on 083 856 6312.

The Zandvlei Estuary was contaminated once again in October, but has since been declared safe for recreational use.

MARINA DA GAMA

Zandvlei’s ongoing contamination issues T

he Zandvlei waterbody has suffered several incidents of contamination this year, with the most recent being earlier this month when it was closed for recreational use from Friday 4 October to Thursday 10 October. While the vlei has been re-opened, residents – especially those in Marina Da Gama – remain concerned about the root cause of the constant contamination. When the water became contaminated in July, it was reported that the spill had originated from Marina Da Gama (“Sewage spill affects water quality at the vlei”, People’s Post 9 July). But, according to Julia Wood, biodiversity manager at the City of Cape Town, that is not the case this time. “There has been a problem with two of the pump stations. Unfortunately, some sewage

did get in and it caused high E.coli,” she told Cape Talk’s Refilwe Moloto. The department tests the vlei once a month and tries to monitor its condition once a week. The estuary’s manager, Kyran Wright, previously said that means of eradicating the sewage were limited. “Once the sewage is in the water, we’re a little bit hamstrung in our ability to deal with it and we have to allow nature to take its course.” Estuary management’s Kingfisher weed harvester can assist the process. It oxygenates the water by circulating it to ensure that the important eco-systems are not compromised. As False Bay’s only functioning estuary, the vlei is an important body of water which officials are working hard to conserve.

RETREAT

Rehab centre needs home for recovery RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

F

reeway Ministries rehabilitation centre faces an uncertain reality at the end of this month, should they fail to find new premises to home the recovering addicts in their programmes currently. The centre provides homes, meals and gym facilities for rehabilitating addicts who reside at the premises for the full sixmonth duration of their treatment, a programme which also takes place at the house on Joe Marks Boulevard in Retreat. “Our programme competes with those that charge R60 000 to R100 000. We want to give people a good programme. Just because we are a non-profit, doesn’t mean we want to give people a second class living. We do a very good programme here,” says head of marketing and fundraising at the centre, Toto Jordan, who is also a recovered addict. The non-profit organisation (NPO) allegedly entered into a lease agreement with the owner of the house, Mervyn Philander, with the intention to buy the house and continue the programmes where they rehabilitate addicts from many parts of the world, and especially those suffering dire circumstances in Retreat and Lavender Hill. “Many of these men come from the streets; some have come straight from jail into the programme. The drug problem is the issue here and if the addicts stop buying from these guys, hopefully they will go out of business and just stop selling. “We’re hoping we can just help fight the problem,” he says. The NPO have refurbished the property they are currently using since they moved in, in 2017, but failing to raise the stipulated R1,3 million for purchase, have forfeited the

money they put into the property. “We got in donations of about R227 000, some of which we put in to renovate the place and make it fit for human occupation.” The agreement states that all modifications made at the cost of the tenant will not be reimbursed by the owner who says, as a pensioner, he cannot afford to reimburse the NPO. “This has left us between a rock and a hard place now – we don’t know what to do. We’ve got boys here in the middle of their six-month programme and we can’t shut down while we do what we need to do,” says Jordan. He says they are hopeful that a kind citizen will have a space available at low cost for the centre to use for its programme, as they rely largely on donations to operate. “We have 19 guys who have finished the programme, and nine of them have celebrated one year clean. We can’t just put our guys in treatment back on the streets where they’re exposed to drugs every day,” he says. As part of the programme, the recovering addicts assist with a soup kitchen, supported by Shoprite, where they feed people in Lavender Hill, Retreat and wherever they find the need, two or three times a week. The centre was invited by a Century Citybased company to talk about addiction last week, as part of their Mental Health Awareness Month activities this October. They hope to continue their programmes and assist substance addicts. Philander told People’s Post in a telephonic interview that he did not want to comment further on the matter between himself and the NPO. V Help support the centre by calling Toto on 072 284 6283 or email info@freewayministry.com.

Freeway Ministries’ Recovery Walk was an event that sought to bring awareness to the problem of drug addiction.

OPINION EDITORIAL

CABLEWAY TURNS 90: The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company celebrated 90 years of service with a glittering event on Friday 4 October. The cableway first started transporting passengers back in 1929. The event was attended by mayor Dan Plato, Mayco member James Vos, past and present Cableway management team members, and representatives from the local tourism and hospitality sector. Pictured is a cake made for the celebration.

Recognise the power of stokvel W

e are approaching the festive season, and there can surely be no better time to recognise the power of an age-old African community savings mechanism: stokvels. Stokvels have been the savings ‘engine room’ for South African communities through apartheid and into democracy; and they remain very effective today, even within the context of the country’s troubling poverty. According to research, R44 billion is saved collectively by 820 000 stokvels in South Africa each year, and more than 11 million South Africans are currently members of stokvels. The vibrancy of local stokvels is one of the reasons why most of the major financial brands have launched specific accounts and services to meet their needs. Although the stokvel has traditionally been a cash-based community savings tool, today a whopping 41% are considered ‘banked’ and use, at the very least, a transactional account. There are a lot of money management options out there for stokvel leaders to consider. These range from opportunities to take advantage of the better interest rates paid by investment accounts to shopping discounts offered by bulk buying. There’s no question that with smart decision making the group’s money can be made to work harder, but for this to be true there has to be a careful analysis of costs versus rewards. If you have never even read this text or understood it, there’s a good chance your collective could be losing money. Individual stokvel members might also be able to put away more money than they think. The key again lies in understanding fine print of financial products such as credit life insurance, which members most likely pay for on their credit facilities. Yalu has become synonymous with credit life insurance, the least understood form of long-term insurance in the South African market. Credit life insurance covers borrowers’ debt in the case of retrenchment, disability or death. This type of insurance is sometimes mandatory and is generally offered by the same financial institution offering the loan. The premiums charged for such policies can vary, and as a result a lot of consumers find themselves unwittingly paying the maximum possible premium every month – creating room for savings if they were to choose a different provider. As always, information is crucial. Because many consumers aren’t aware of the details of their credit life insurance policies, they’re losing out on potential savings every month, and this money could contribute significantly to their overall savings efforts. As most stokvel members are already aware, there are only two ways to improve your financial situation: spend less or save more. In both areas, paying attention to all the details of financial products and services can have a big impact on the individual, and therefore the group. If, as a broad South African society, we improve this skill, our stokvel heritage will grow stronger than it already is. -Nkazi Sokhulu, cofounder and CEO at credit life insurance brand, Yalu.

Be wary of fake news on social media It is quick and easy to share any security information or warnings on social media but if you didn’t confirm its authenticity before posting, you might end up doing more damage than you think. We are seeing more and more fake news posts relating to crime warnings and other security and safety news hitting the likes of Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. The intention might appear to have been noble and praiseworthy but it often turns out to have been in reality driven by less than honest motives. These items often fuel the agenda of an individual or group and promote fearmongering based on false information. By

forwarding the information you are promoting fake news. When it comes to security-related fake news, the effects are all the more harmful. Criminals are often behind security-related fake news items. Their objective is to promote their own selfish agenda, whatever that may be. It can lead to wasted resources. The police and security companies may respond to a particular fake news item claiming an incident has happened, for example, while criminals target another area. This is why it is so important to verify any information you receive before forwarding it. It is also important to watch

what photographs you post. Posting a photo of an alleged suspect could result in that case potentially being thrown out of court at a later date. The important thing to remember is – if there is any doubt as to the legitimacy of the information, don’t share it. Information can be verified through the police or other security authorities. We all need to be responsible when it comes to spreading information, especially relating to safety and security. Otherwise, we could be responsible for igniting fires where there are no fires at all. JADE HANNING, Fidelity ADT Cape Town South district manager

Play ball! Baseball is back SEAN CAMPBELL

T

he start of the Cape Town Baseball Federation’s new season kicked off this past weekend which included a new league structure for the Major League and Promotion League teams. The Major League has reverted to an eight-team league with last season’s top six, Bothasig Knights, Bellville Tygers, Athlone A’s, Maitland Giants, VOB Macaws and Durbanville Villains joined by the top two from last season’s Major League B: Van der Stel and Grassy Park Crusaders. The Promotional League now consists of Westridge Yankees, Helderberg Pirates, Thistle, Battswood, Milnerton Mavericks, Lansdowne Eagles and Silvertree Titans. The Major League opening fixtures saw VOB Macaws capitalise on Athlone A’s six errors to run out 9-7 winners at Vangate Sports Complex on Saturday 12 October. A’s out hit VOB 7-4 leaving nine runners on base compared to VOB’s eight. National team pitcher Dean Jacobs started the pitching for A’s and was badly let down by his defence to allow three runs in the first innings from two hits, a single by Jarryd Haynes and a triple by Luke November, two errors and a walk. VOB moved to a 3-0 lead after scoring another run in the second inning from a walk and a hit from Lance Gordon. Jacobs settled and kept VOB scoreless for the next two innings. Meanwhile, A’s were struggling to get to grips with the pitching of Michael Scritten with most flying the ball into the south-easterly wind. Jacobs conceded four hits and gave three walks while striking out four hitters in his four inning pitched. He was then replaced by Shelton Trotsky. Trotsky walked the first two batters he faced - one hit by pitch, while he was sabotaged by his infield who committed four errors allowing VOB to score five runs in the fifth inning. A’s threatened in the fourth when 16-yearold rookie Tariq Adams got his first major league hit to centre field and stole second base on the next pitch. Cameron Fortuin then drew a walk, however, a shallow flyball to shortstop by Reid Groenewald was caught by Marvin Mahoney and he put Adams out at second base. A’s scored their first run in the fifth inning when Trotsky lead off with a stand-up double, the first of three doubles. Josh Wentzel then squeezed a hit between third and shortstop which advanced Trotsky to third. Wentzel stole second base before Matthew

Trotsky then kept VOB scoreless for the next three innings before making way for Diedericks who struck out the last three VOB hitters. A’s continued creeping back in the seventh inning when Trotsky again lead off the inning with a stand-up double. A’s scored two runs from his hit, two walks and an error. In the eight innings A’s scored a further four runs from three hits, a walk and an error. This took the score to 9-7 in VOB’s favour. VOB kept their cool in the last inning o seal the win. In another fixture Bellville Tygers were too strong for Durbanville Villains, winning 12-6. After four innings, Tygers led 3-0 . Durbanville, however, briefly took the lead in the top of the fifth inning scoring six runs from four hits and four errors committed by Tyg-

ers. Tygers regained the lead scoring five runs from four hits and two errors to hold an 8-6 lead. Durbanville threatened again in the sixth inning with bases loaded none down. Terence White however grounded to first base and was put out by Allan Randall who also played home for the advancing runner to be put out for Tygers to record their second double play of the game. They also had one in the third inning. Tygers went on to score a further four runs in the eighth inning. Randall who came off the bench batted 3 for 3 and Jonathan Phillips 2 for 4 were Tygers best hitters. Tygers started with national pitcher Kevin Townend who pitched five innings conceded three hits, gave four walks and struck out five Durbanville hitters. He was briefly replaced by Russell Olivier who faced four hitters before Anthony Phillips pitched the last three innings. Durbanville also started with their own

national pitcher Stuart Baron who threw four innings conceding three hits, three walks and struck out seven Tygers hitters. He was replaced by Darren Smith, who returned to the club after a few seasons at Bothasig Knights. Smith came in for some heavy punishment from the Tygers hitters who took eight hits from Smith’s four innings pitched. He also walked one hitter whilst striking out four. Durbanville made five errors compared to Tygers four. In other Major League results, Maitland Giants beat Grassy Park Crusaders 15-10 and Bothasig Knights thumped Van Der Stel 33-5. In the Promotion League Westridge Yankees had the upper hand on Helderberg Pirates beating them 11-8, Milnerton Mavericks beat Lansdowne Eagles 13-2 and Silvertree Titans struggled against Battswood losing 19-1.
