Activist gets recognition RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
D
espite being recognised by the BBC as one of the top 100 most influential and inspiring women in the world for 2019, Lucinda Evans says the plight of women to be recognised for their efforts is still ongoing. But she says she aims to rise to this challenge
and continue to fight for every person in need, as they come through her door. This year Lucinda has continued to build on her impressive list of accolades; adding her nomination for the Western Cape Commissioner of Children, her BBC nod and most recently the recipient of the Bishop Sydney Lavis Service to Humanity Award, one of the three Vanguard Awards at the 2019 Commu-
nity Chest Impumelelo Social Innovations Awards. The award ceremony was held on Sunday 10 November at the Artscape Opera House. Desiré Goliath, public relations and communications manager at Community Chest, commended Lucinda for her hard work and said that she was the most deserving person to receive this award.

“She is an incredible, phenomenal woman. The Vanguard awards honour people who have excelled in their fields of expertise,” she explained. Lucinda, unaware of the award she was receiving on the day, said she was in disbelief as her name rang through the hall. “It’s a very big thing! For South Africa, getting such an award is the equivalent to the Legion of Honor from the French government that I received three years ago, and how the French esteemed that I earned that award.” These accolades however, have not deterred her from her work as a social activist at her non-profit organisation, Philisa Abafazi Bethu. “I’m just going to stay in my lane,” she said. “But what this award means for me and our community in Lavender Hill, is that we now have an influencer who has been recognised by BBC – someone from the flats. This award, I dedicate to every single woman and leader in this province, in this country, and on the Cape Flats.” Women, she said, need more recognition. “I was recognised by the BBC. But in my country, not even my president said congratulations. What about Alan Winde, the premier – I live in the Western Cape – nothing from the premier. The only person from parliament that congratulated me was the minister of education, Debbie Schafer. “So the core question we ask about women leaders in this province: Do we really matter? Does our voice matter?” Lucinda wants to use these accolades not to elevate herself, but to show the world that women leaders need more support and help to serve. She added that giving up is not an option because she has to set an example to young leaders. This means that while everyone else is winding down for December, she is gearing up for the festive season; a time that she explains becomes more violent. Her work for the December and January period has just begun. V For more information on Philisa Abafazi Bethu, visit www.philisaabafazi.org.

We wanted to see how they are bringing new ideas and fresh ideas to solving a social challenge,” she said. Affectionately known by the Butterfly Art Project as The Love Bug Project, the model for trauma relief is currently being rolled out with the goal to reach children in 54 different communities across Cape Town. Art and creativity are the backbone of the Butterfly Art Project’s empowerment and trauma relief programmes. to prevent kids from suffering post-traumatic stress disorder.” According to Philander, this model of stress-relief is something that doesn’t really exist yet and can be described as social firstaid. The specially designed “first-aid kit” for the programme, however, is unlike the one most people are familiar with. “We have developed a toolkit to carry out our practices. It contains all the tools that our community art facilitators need – rope, beanbags, flags and ribbon,” he said. The training of facilitators has begun at Casa Labia Cultural Centre in Muizenberg, the community art facilitators’ headquarters, where workshops are equipping them to work with children from disadvantaged communities who have experienced trauma.
The workshop encompasses the project’s eight-week curriculum – a training manual on the practices for child development. In addition to helping children cope with the trauma they face regularly as a result of poor socio-economic conditions – abuse and shack fires, to name a few – Butterfly Art Project also wants to introduce them to the topic of climate change. “We focus on it because climate change is happening and our children don’t have access to the benefits of counselling. This is ultimately a cheaper form of counselling,” he said. Butterfly Art Project will put its R20 000 cash winnings toward further development of its programmes. Elders recognised for their work RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

impie Bonzaaier, a 74-year-old leader in the Retreat community, was the guest of honour at a recognition ceremony held for community workers who have had an impact on others. The ceremony took place at the Retreat community centre on Sunday 10 November in honour of Wimpie, Johanna Carelse, Chantal Geland, Jennifer Stacey and Pat Daniels; all of whom have been described as influential residents. “It was actually a big surprise, and when I looked at the faces, I remembered most of them. Most of them come from the time when I was the supervisor at the crèche,” says Wimpie. A resident, Lucille Haupt, who helped organise the event, said the crèche she attended and the after school programmes hosted
by Wimpie and other teachers worked well to keep them off the streets. “We used to go to crèche and he was one of the crèche teachers. They had an afternoon programme, and after crèche, we would run there and work on his nerves and the other teachers’ nerves,” she explains. “Without us noticing at the time, they taught us to have confidence and prepared us to speak in front of audiences and work in teams. We are so grateful for what they have done, and we do not even want to think where we would end up without their teaching,” she adds. Wimpie, who now works with youth at Pollsmoor Prison, says he was simply content working with children. “It was a dream to work with children. I was not raised by my mother and father, and so it was a dream for me to be a father to as many children in the community.” His ability to continue working, he attrib-
utes to a life well lived. He has seven children of his own, played rugby for the Western Province and became a South African Judo Champion in his heyday. Lucille believes that it is people like the ones who were honoured who contribute to-
wards creating good, well-rounded communities. “We want to tell the community leaders that they should continue with afternoon programmes to keep children off the street. They laid the foundation for us,” she laments.

LAVENDER HILL | KHAYELITSHA
Help fund bulletproof yoga classrooms RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
T
he Earthchild Project’s yoga sessions have proven to relieve the stress and anger in children of two disadvantaged Cape Town communities, and now the organisation is hoping to create permanent calming spaces to host the classes. The project works with 3 500 children and 300 teachers in eight schools in Lavender Hill and Khayelitsha. It aims to instil mindfulness in its beneficiaries, through yoga, and to teach them practical gardening know-how in each of the schools’ organic gardens, which double as calming outdoor gardens. Currently, yoga sessions are held in spare classrooms, school halls or outside, but Carly Appelby, communications and marketing manager for the project, says this is not ideal. “Kids have to practice outside and being outside is not ideal a lot of the time. “The Earthchild Project has identified the need for these children to have a space that is quiet and safe.” Subsequently, it has begun to raise money to build dedicated yoga classrooms at each of the eight schools they service. The bulletproof classrooms will be made from repurposed materials. This method is intended to lower the cost of each building and assist to save the environment. “It’s the materials that would otherwise go to landfill sites,” says Appelby. Each classroom will cost R300 000 but, considering the benefits of the yoga programme, she says, it will be worth it. “It’s unbelievable. Our teachers have reported that after a yoga session kids are quieter, calmer and there are fewer fights. A lot of kindness comes out through lesson plans and many go home and teach their siblings yoga.”
Children in underprivileged communities will be given the opportunity to relax and regroup through yoga, following the building of eight new yoga classrooms in Lavender Hill and Khayelitsha. The Shala Cape Town Yoga School, which has been a partner of the project since 2009, is also working towards the goal of building these eight classrooms. For the past 10 years, the school has held various fundraising classes and events, donated yoga mats and volunteered teaching hours for school yoga programmes. Additionally, The Shala has helped to train Earthchild Project facilitators to teach yoga themselves,” says Thomas Sheehy, co-owner of the yoga school. The reason behind the long-standing
partnership, he says, is to create meaningful and sustainable change by providing practical skills in how to live a holistic, balanced lifestyle with a focus on self-awareness, health and the environment. “We encourage anybody who may be interested in this important work to get involved by donating time, expertise and finances in any way possible,” he says, adding that many students of The Earthchild Project’s programmes have graduated to become teachers and continue to invest in the communities.
At the time of print, its GivenGain fundraiser page had raised almost R150 000, half of the funds needed to build the second yoga classroom. Lesley-Ann Brandt, a Cape Town-born actor on Netflix and Fox’s Lucifer, is also on board, having launched the #carelikeademon campaign to assist The Earthchild Project in achieving its goal. ith just under one-and-half years of mixed martial arts (MMA) training under his belt, Lewis Mataya (22) is now a champion fighter. The Fish Hoek local trains in Sunnydale at Straight Blast Gym (SBG), which has other branches in Fish Hoek and Retreat and conducts classes for children and adults in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, MMA, kickboxing and self-defence. “Lewis Mataya; through his diligence in training and the structures that were put in place, together with the assistance of his teammates, reached this first goal in his burgeoning career. He joined SBG Cape Town 17 months ago and today he is the Professional Fighting Championship (PFC) lightweight champion after defeating Patrick Mbokwe via an armbar in the fourth round,” says Steve Bazzea, his proud coach at the gym. Mataya’s time at the gym was not his first experience as a fighter, however. He had more than three-and-a-half years of martial arts training under his belt before taking on MMA. “I needed to challenge myself. I was doing well in taekwondo, but then I reached where I wanted to be; I wasn’t going anywhere. This is way more challenging. It’s something that I felt – I needed to go this path,” says Mataya. He trained under professional MMA fighter Gary “Relentless” Joshua, and says he values his expertise. “When you’re training with a pro who knows what to do and what not to do, and things that work, both inside and outside the ring, it’s a very rich experience for me to have him,” Mataya says. His training for “the fight of his career” – so far – began more than a month before it took place on Saturday 26 October at GrandWest Ca- Lewis Mataya won the PFC title in October.

The 41-year-old former South African international has played at one Junior World Championship, three senior World Championships, one Commonwealth Games and has toured overseas on 11 different occasions. Molaba is renowned for his winning run in the 2000 World Series in East London. But now, even as his energy has shifted mostly to coaching, Molaba could be set to add another golden moment. “By accepting the invitation, we will continue to strengthen the relationship between Khayelitsha Eagles and the Sweden Softball Federation,” he said. Locally, Molaba coaches the Eagles Men Thuto Makolomakoe, Terence White and Moses side and the Falcons Molaba.
T
he relationship between Khayelitsha Eagles Softball Club and the Swedish Softball Association took another positive turn recently. Moses Molaba, Thuto Makolomakoe and Terence White were guest players for Sweden in the European Masters Softball Cup played in Barcelona, Spain. They were invited by their local Swedish player, Karl Heljm, who plays for Eagles as part of an agreement between the two organisations. The men’s edition of this tournament consisted of eight teams from six different countries. For the round-robin phase, the teams played in two groups. Denmark All Stars and Magos Tenerife remained undefeated in their group, thus securing the first two spots in the winners’ group. Runners up, with both one loss and two wins, were the Israel Stars and Capitalinos Gran Canaria. Magos Tenerife remained the only undefeated team throughout the event and deserved the title. “The experience of playing in this event was great,” said Molaba who has vast experience in the international softball scene.
