lderly residents were celebrated in Seawinds on Tuesday 26 November at an annual event hosted by Gerry Gordon, councillor for ward 67. Despite the festive atmosphere, the occurrence of elder abuse in the greater Retreat area was addressed. Guests were handpicked from informal settlements in Hillview, Overcome Heights and Village Heights as well as from seniors’ clubs in Pelican Park, Zeekoevlei and Seawinds.

They were entertained with live music and treated to drinks and eats. With the event falling within the 16 Days of Activism, Gordon said seniors should not keep quiet about the abuse. “I have very high regard for the seniors because they are the most experienced people on this Earth. 16 Days of Activism against women and children – the abuse that happens – you are not immune or excluded from it,” she said. “I do know that many of you suffer abuse in your own homes. The fact that someone screams at you – that’s abuse. Be the exam-
ple and put your foot down.” Residents confirmed that elderly abuse happens daily. “You have sons shouting, screaming and abusing their parents for money, for drugs,” said one resident. She said the problem in Seawinds is the lack of facilities and activities to keep people from using drugs. Speaking from personal experience, she told People’s Post how she was forced to have her children jailed to rehabilitate them. Another resident added the established rehabilitation centres do not have active support systems or groups in their communi-

ties. This presents a problem for addicts because they do not usually have the money to travel to seek support. “We can’t give them taxi money – they’ll take it straight to buy drugs,” she said. Another resident said the extent of the abuse experienced by elders ranges from verbal to physical and even sexual. Seawinds residents are calling on the City to take note of their needs for parks with security guards, sports fields and programmes to empower the youth before they become just another crime statistic. - See pictures on page 2.

Lavender Hill shootings A shooting incident occurred in Depsiton Crescent on Wednesday 26 November at about 13:00 where a 29-year-old man was shot and killed. In the same incident, a 10year-old boy and 58-year-old man were shot and wounded. According to reports the deceased was walking in the road when he was

approached by three unknown suspects who started shooting at him. During the shooting the two bystanders were injured. The child was taken to a medical facility in a stable condition. The incident is gang-related. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.
Engagements with residents throughout the greater Retreat area will soon yield 5 000 housing opportunities in the southern suburbs. Over the past two weeks, the Western Cape minister of human settlements, Tertius Simmers, held meetings with residents from wards 62, 63, 65, 66, 67, 68, 71 and 110. These include Plumstead, Ottery and Ottery East, Ferness, Parkwood, Vrygrond, Seawinds, Grassy Park, Lavender Hill, Steenberg, Retreat, Southfield and Cafda. He praised each community for their dedication to achieving their housing goals. “I commend the communities, their project steering committees (PSC’s), ward councillors, civic organisations and all other stakeholders for their robust and frank engagements.” He said the meetings helped to clearly explain the provincial government’s housing
allocation criteria and how to ensure that those longest on the housing demand database will benefit first. “This mixed-development project, which includes Breaking New Ground (BNG), Community Residential Units (CRU), rental and social housing, open market and Finance Linked Individual Subsidy Programme (Flisp), has a budget of more than R1.5 billion. The project is currently in its planning phase, which includes various investigations and assessments,” he said. The projects are projected to commence in mid-2021 with the last key to be handed over in 2024. Various amenities such as schools and recreational facilities will also form part of this development. Simmers encouraged residents and potential beneficiaries to engage their PSC’s and ward councillors to acquire the correct information.

pgrades to flats in Ward 110 are set to cost more than R10 million. Last month, ward 110 councillor Shanen Rossouw told Peoples Post about the major upgrades to the flats in her ward (“Major upgrades for ward 110”, 5 November). According to the City, the staircases – which were in a dire state of disrepair – are being replaced to the tune of R8.4 million. The replacement of the old window frames with aluminium ones, which has already been carried out in many blocks, is set to cost about R2.65 million. Upcoming projects include replacement of the gutters and roofs, as well as painting of the exterior of the flat buildings. Resident Mogammat Petersen (87) says he’s lived in the same block of flats in Steenberg for 50 years. “The stairs were broken,

the pole was broken and it was dangerous. We didn’t know if we were going to fall off the stairs or what,” he explains. The new staircases have been constructed from cement and have metal fixtures which can’t be vandalized and won’t deteriorate in the near future. Happy with the upgrades, he says: “I’m loving it, I’m loving the new stairs.” In addition to improving the look of the ward, Rossouw is still focused on creating a safer community through the installation of surveillance cameras. According to Rossouw, twelve cameras have been installed on the streets, as well as three to monitor the camera control centre. “The 15m poles that is being used for the cameras, are R120 000 for one. This is where the bulk of the money went to.” A budget of R300 000 has been set aside for the new cameras to be installed and completion is expected in May next year.

Knitted goods donated to centre RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
T
he Sunrise Special Care Centre received a special donation of knitted items from three senior ladies who wanted their work to go towards a good cause. Betty Saunders, Kathy Duval and Sofiya Jenkins were escorted to the centre in Elfindale by Mercia Duval, to deliver their goods. The trio, two of which celebrated their 90th birthdays this month, said knitting has been part of their lives for as long as they can remember. Betty said: “I started knitting toys when I was a little girl, and I just love it so I spend all my spare time knitting.” Kathy said the idea came about
recently and ward 72 councillor, Kevin Southgate was able to help them. “We just decided in this year. I said let’s knit for the underprivileged children and so we did,” she said. Adding that senior activities are a priority for him, Kevin said: “Given the work that the seniors are doing, we’re looking at our ward allocation and we’re looking to see if we can make a sum of money available to actually purchase wool and all the other knitting stuff they need. That’s part of the projects for this particular year.” Rosemarie Duval is currently the main donor of the wool the ladies use to make their socks, jerseys and soft plush toys. Hein Kruger, the centres manag-
er, said he and his five carers provide daily support for the young adults and children with disabilities in Retreat, Lavender Hill and Capricorn. He said he is appreciative of the kind gesture and is sure that parents of the youth in their care would be thankful for the donation. What remains a concern for the centre, however, is the lack of funding and volunteers. Hein explained: “It’s not easy here, and people may think that government sponsors cover the costs, but it is never enough.” He encourages the community to get involved with local care centres, because all the help and support counts. V Call the Sunrise Special Care Centre on 021 712 1445 to find out how you can help.

Literacy winners in final showdown RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
Ngawethu Sityebi, Lelethu Kanayo and Jemima Ndamba Mkobi were the top prize winners in the spelling bee category of the Western Cape Afterschool Literacy Programme.
Sozo Foundation‘s literacy competition reached its high point on Wednesday 27 November, when competitors in three categories went head-to-head to determine this year’s literacy winners. The first inaugural Western Cape Afterschool Literacy Programme, headed by the foundation, kicked off earlier this year. Learners from Ikamva Youth in Crossroads, Afrika Tikkun in Mfuleni and the Sozo Foundation in Vrygrond took part to find those who have a special love for literature. They participated in the spelling bee, spoken word and poetry categories. Wendy Abrahams, programmes manager at the foundation, pointed out that, besides teaching the young adults about healthy competition, the contest aimed to ignite a passion for literacy in the
learners who predominantly come from underprivileged and underresourced communities. She opened the finals with a word of encouragement for the noticeably nervous learners. “You’ve all competed, you’ve made it to the finals – you’re all winners. So now it’s just the winners competing against each other. And well done for being leaders in literacy,” she said. In the final round of the spelling bee, 10 learners faced off to be the first spelling bee champion in this competition. Jemima Ndamba Mkobi of Sozo was awarded 2nd runner up for her impressive spelling skills, with Ngawethu Sityebi from Afrika Tikkun earning her spot as 1st runner up and Lelethu Kanayo from Afrika Tikkun taking home top honours. It was only Sozo Foundation learners who were finalists in the poetry competition. The 2nd runner up was Avela Booi, the 1st run-
ner up was Natasha Sibanda and the winner – for her impeccable wordplay – was Zhida Johnston. The three competitors in the spoken word category were Lukho Noyila, Simamkele Jonginamba and Simamkele Zweni. Simamkele came in at number one with her impromptu word on being a black African child in South Africa today. The judges were Zoe Swartz, Sherena Roux, Orelie Kabaye, Neville Williams, Ronel Mannellepie, Mandy Williams and Yusrah Abrahams from Sozo, and Dorothy Dyer from Friends of Nablus and Surrounding Area (Fonsa), a charitable trust which aims to alleviate poverty. After the medals and trophies were handed out, Wendy concluded: “Thank you for taking part in the first Western Cape Afterschool Literacy Programme. It was for young people to engage and to love and express themselves naturally, through literature.”

Grade R’s learn about hygiene AVRIL FILLIES
Officers and government workers in uniform were thanked in Ocean View.
Officers praised for their work St Clare’s Anglican Church of Assisi, Ocean View, held a special thanksgiving service, honouring all those in uniform – especially the police, traffic police, South African National Defence Force, health services, community policing forums, neighbourhood watches, nurses and all those who are passionate about safety. Major General Mzwandile Mzamane, the deputy police commissioner for human resources management, took time out from his usual post in Gugulethu to deliver a sermon as the preacher for the day. He reminded the congregation that they are all called into service. Addressing police members, he said that 90% of those in attendance are people of faith and serve with their hearts. Mzamane said: “On parade, we take off our caps, place it over our hearts and bow – not before man, but God. There are those rotten apples among us as well, and we will acknowledge that too; praying that they may turn away from being corrupt.” Sharone Daniels, community activist said the community of Ocean View had been wrestling with gunshots going off almost daily the past week. “Two people were murdered and one person injured. Ocean View police, with the few resources they
have, often have joint operations with other law enforcement agencies and they try their best to maintain order. Together with the community more can be done and there is always room for improvement,” she added, thanking Ocean View police spokesperson Sgt Leon Fortuin for attending the service. She also acknowledged the role of nurses and how difficult it must be to deal with the emergencies they face. “The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) members’ lives are constantly at risk when these shootings occur or their equipment gets stolen. Police vehicles and staff are being stoned many times when there are call-outs and when arrests need to be made,” she noted. During the service, Mzamane told the state officials that integrity and providing safety are of the utmost importance. “We are not here to serve political parties or the government, but our people, ensuring that law is upheld. Even if it is our own family members we have to arrest them when a crime is committed.” Aubrey Robinson, chair of the Cape Town Youth Cadets, gave a short address with his cadets from Retreat standing beside him. Robinson agreed to return and see how to assist with establishing a forum for the youth of Ocean View.
Primary in Mitchell’s Plain. “We believe that giving back and teaching our little ones on health issues and how, by cleaning hands, less children will stay out of school and be present in school. “Through the outreach it teaches one the values of life, in how something that may seem small can help in greater measures,” says Davids. “We’ve visited over ten schools thus far, and we’ve only started with the Grade R’s in each school where there are between two to five classes. The total of learners in each class is between 30 tot 40 kids,” she adds. According to Davids, she has seen during her school drives that public schools need help from communities. Davids has also published three books to encourage victims of child abuse to break the silence and to tell their own stories.
When she learned from teachers that kids stay out of school due to illness in Steenberg, Athlone, Hanover Park and Mitchell’s Plain, Chimnese Davids from Grassy Park decided to help teach learners about cleanliness during her school drives. “We started in August and taught the kids to keep their hands clean after break time and before they have their meals. By washing their hands, it can help lessen a child staying out of school due to stomach bugs,” she says. Davids started her own NPO, Kreativ South Africa, in 2014 when she left the corporate world and a career in accounting to write and mentor others. “Kreativ SA is a personal initiative with the main aim to develop and enhance individual and community projects and publications, in order to build a healthy society. In collaboration with the perfume store MRL Private Collection in Schaapkraal, we’ve decided to do the school drives by implementing a hygiene project where we go out to different schools on the Cape Flats,” she says. The schools they’ve visited since August are: Sid G Rule Primary in Grassy Park, Sullivan Primary in Steenberg, Prince George Primary in Lavender Hill, Newfields Primary in Athlone, Voorspoed Primary in Grade R’s from Sullivan Primary School in Steenberg; one of Hanover Park and West End the 10 schools that learned about cleanliness.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT
Marching bands keep growing RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
A
bout 60 schools are set to compete in the Western Cape Provincial Marching Federation’s annual regional competition on Saturday 7 December at Athlone Stadium. Spectators, parents and residents from across the Cape are encouraged to attend and support the youth. The schools and community teams usually hail from in and around Cape Town but this year the federation expanded its reach to instil the values of discipline and accountability in more children. Previously there were only 34 teams competing. “We’ve gone now into the rural areas also – Bredasdorp, the Karoo, Overberg, West Coast, Worcester and so on. Now during this annual competition, we bring all the schools to compete,” said Roy Prinsloo, an executive member of the federation. The children will compete in several categories to find the best high school, primary school and community teams. Roy explained: “There’s the grand march pass, which must be regimented like the army does. So the judge will make sure every-
one is in unison; that everyone’s arms move and go up at the same time, for example. The next one we have is the drum major competition, where they find the best drum major who leads the team. “And then there’s best dressed; we inspect to see if they’re neat and clean and make sure no buttons are broken, and so on. The final category is the exhibition where each of the teams shows their unique team choreography.” Roy, along with Nick Smit, manage Fairmount Secondary School’s award-winning marching band. Smit said, despite the rapidly growing number of teams taking part in the sport, the main problem is still funding. While their school may have a partnership with Norwegian funders, who sponsor their learners’ fees and partially support the marching band, other teams do not have the same financial support and more is needed to assist the sport to grow. The federation calls on anyone who can provide help to support their local marching bands and to develop these children into accountable and responsible young people. Safa CT pledges to ramp up safety EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt
I
n the wake of the tragic events which saw a young player lose his life on a soccer field, Safa Cape Town (Safa CT) has pledged to increase its safety profile across the local football associations it administers. Saturday 5 October was a dark day for community football when Imtiyaaz Wagiet left home never to return again. Sadly, in a match between Bayview’s u.16 team and Strandfontein, Imtiyaaz collapsed on the field with no medical professional or qualified first aider. According to his coach at Bayview, Mark Rodrigues, he was then loaded into his parent’s car and taken to the nearby fire station. “People tried to resuscitate him. After 10 minutes they took the boy and put him in his parents’ car. They took him to the fire station. At the fire station, they tried their best to keep him alive. He was there for around 10 minutes, but he then passed on,” he says. Two years ago, People’s Post,
through their freelance sport photographer Rashied Isaacs, highlighted the dire need for health and safety personnel on community sports fields (“Safety no walk in the park”, 14 February 2017), but with the tragic events at Westridge Oval last month, Isaacs’ worst fears were realised. According to Isaacs, Wagiet’s death once again highlighted the need for thorough emergency planning for all sports and he is determined to bring about change at the different sporting venues, partnering with an accredited company to offer free first aid training for coaches as far back as 2014. Earlier this year, Isaacs refused to attend any more Safa CT events unless they addressed the apparent safety issues which saw Wagiet tragically lose his life. As a result, Safa CT president Bennett Bailey met with Isaacs to discuss his concerns and to pledge their commitment to the safer sports field project. Bailey then committed to introducing a holistic plan around safety for the 70 000 registered players in the 35 local football associations
(LFAs) he leads. “We have introduced, at a regional level, a constitutional clause where we refer to our medical officer, who is responsible for safety at our events. That we are going to bring and cascade to a local level, so that there is a pathway from local to provincial to national – that we all speak the same language,” Bailey said, adding that these policies now need to be enforced. “One of the things we are going to start with is to instruct all LFAs to appoint a medical officer in terms of the Safa regional and national constitution,” said Bailey. The new local football season starts in April next year, which is the time earmarked for changes to take effect. Bailey hopes that players and other informal associations follow Safa CT’s suit by placing more importance on safety. “It is like boxing where you cannot start the fight without a paramedic or an ambulance being onsite,” he says, adding that even third division clubs will be able to be trained up in first aid.
Fes ve
“We also want the referees to enforce it (safety standards) also, where if there is not a visible first aider present then that game should not start at all,” said Bailey. He adds this is one of the final pieces to Safa CT’s overall puzzle, whereby they seek to improve the level of performances of football players, which in turn will improve the standard of football being played locally. “Part of that process of identify-
ing talent is to get the right athletes – this is where the safety and our medical officer comes in terms of testing. When we test athletes we will look at all areas – the bio-kinetics, nutrition and all the areas necessary – for scientific support, but with it also, the athlete needs to be fit. We cannot send an athlete for provincial training at provincial teams if this person is not fit or healthy,” he said.
