he excitement was palpable as u.12 and u.13 rugby players from Zwaanswyk Academy waited to meet their DHL Stormers counterparts, at the Western Province Rugby High Performance Centre in Bellville, on Tuesday 28 January. Altheo Mathys, sports HOD at the academy, said a parent sent the school a link to the Heart FM DHL Stormers and Drive 326 competition. As first prize, selected players at one lucky school would get the chance to meet and train with the local team. Zwaanswyk Academy entered and won. “It’s not rugby season yet but they are extremely excited and, hopefully, this will motivate them when rugby season starts. “It’s not every day you get the opportunity

to stand here, next to the field, and learn from professional rugby players,” said Mathys. Mikaylin Rhode, u.13 head coach for the academy, added: “It’s a good experience to learn as much as they can from these guys – these are their role models at the end of the day. And, for me, it’s really nice to see the Stormers giving back to the community.” The school rugby team, which has one female player, was able to observe the professional rugby players’ training session and even run drills with some of the Springboks Rugby World Cup winners. Siphukhanyo Dyanti, Jude Miles and Tyron Mathys, all 12-year-olds, had the chance to meet their rugby idols. Jude, whose favourite player is Steven Kitshoff, said: “I feel very happy that we can

learn more. My parents said it would be very good if I want to become a rugby player.” Tyron said that his favourite player was Herschel Jantjies. He added: “I’m loving the opportunity.” Siphukhanyo said he owed the opportunity to meet his idol, Siya Kolisi, to a few people. “I thank my coaches and my friend’s mother for actually telling us about this competition.” Stormers player Seabelo Senatla psyched up the learners with his high-energy antics. He said this meet-and-greet was special for him too. “It was great to be with these kids and give them a little bit of hope.” Stormers kicked their 2020 Super Rugby season with a 27- 0 victory over the Hurricanes on Saturday 1 February at Newlands Stadium. CAPE TOWN

Sights, sound and splendour SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS @Samantha_Lee121

I

t has been a decade of splendour for the Cape Town Carnival having lit up the streets of Cape Town with colour.

People's Post is published by WP Media, a subsidiary of Media24. RETREAT 19 493 copies distributed Tuesdays to the following areas: Southfield, Heathfield, Coniston Park, Elfindale, Hillview, Lavender Hill, Retreat, Seawinds, Sharedon Park, Steenberg and Cafda Village. OTHER EDITIONS People's Post also has the following nine standalone editions:

Looking ahead to the next 10 years, the 11th carnival will celebrate the “Incredible journey: sounds of South Africa”. The official theme was launched at Nasdak, the rooftop venue at the Media24 centre, in the CBD on Friday 31 January, beginning the 50 days’ countdown to this year’s event. “We started with one float in Long Street with 12 000 spectators,” says Prof Rachel Jafta who has been part of the carnival for several years. She says, this year, carnival goers can expect to see and hear parades inspired by all local sounds – from marimba to marabi, uhadi to riel – showcasing the music, song, dance and art of our country. Jay Douwes, CEO of Cape Town Carnival, says: “We are celebrating 10 years of igniting joy and unity through creativity. Through this project, we have seen the incredible ingenuity and talent of our people and are proud to have been able to provide the platform for locals and international visitors to experience this.” People’s Post is an official media partner of the event. General access to the carnival is free but bleacher-style terraced platform seats are available for purchase (R350 each) along

with the ultimate Cape Town Carnival hospitality experience – exclusive raised-platform seating, including drinks and finger foods (R1 390 each). Reggy Moalusi, head of corporate affairs for Multichoice South Africa, says: “At the end of the day, we want to enrich people’s lives and make a positive and valued difference. That’s what makes our partnership with the Cape Town Carnival compelling.” Several exciting floats, along with 2000 performers, will again line the streets. To close the show, a float inspired by the Afro-future will excite audiences and offer an insight into what organisers believe the future of the country and the carnival will look like. The Cape Town Carnival will take place on the Fan Walk on Saturday 21 March. Thousands of spectators are once again expected to line the streets. Cape Town mayor Dan Plato says the City is excited to once again be part of the carnival as it is a unique opportunity that unites people from all over the city. Plato says they will continue to enforce their stance on gender-based violence and use their platform to say, “Enough is enough”. V Samantha Lee-Jacobs took these photos.

WARD 67

Illegal dumping remains a problem RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

W

hile safety and security remain a challenge across the Cape Flats, Gerry Gordon, councillor for ward 67, says there is another prevailing concern residents should take note of to improve their surroundings.

Waste management Communities experience a very high percentage of dumping, she says, which is exacerbated by the influx of backyard dwellers. “Residents are issued one bin. But then they take on more people in their backyards without applying for another bin. “Some ratepayers have three or four people renting space and still only one bin. When the bin is full, people sometimes go to any open space and dump it.” City-wide dumping is a major problem. Mayor Dan Plato issued several warnings last year to people who got rid of waste in public spaces. Dumping on any public land is illegal and an offence, warns the City in a statement. It reads: “If you are found guilty of dumping illegally, you could be fined between

R500 and R10 000 and could get a prison sentence of six months to two years.” According to the City, the cost of illegal dumping is about R350 million annually to remove and transport waste to waste sites. While residents often dump broken beds and building debris, Gordon says there are other forms of dumping that severely affect the sewage systems. “What comes out of the drains are cloths, spoons, forks and rags, which cause blockages. In one area, we removed a whole lot of rice. “We don’t have a system that moves food things this way and other things that way. These things cause blockages down the line.” Development In the months ahead, a number of projects aimed at the development of Seawinds and Pelican Park will be launched, says Gordon. “There are a few things that are going to happen but we will only get to know the details later in the year. Seawinds and Vrygrond, as well as Lavender Hill, are known as the Murp (Mayoral Urban Regeneration

Project) areas and there’s quite a bit of transformation that will take place in that area.”

She also hopes to engage with the residents on these and other issues and encourages them to write letters to her office or People’s Post, so that she can address them. V Letters can be emailed to racine.edwardes@media24.com or hand-delivered to the community centre on the corner of St Stephen and St Swithin Road in Seawinds.

Safety and security Getting feet on the ground and eyes on the streets take priority for Gordon in her ward. She hopes to eliminate truancy through the implementation and development of several community-run initiatives. “In the ward, we are looking at more neighbourhood watches and getting to start street committees, because people do want to see that there are more eyes and ears on the streets,” she says. “They want to see that there are more vigilance and consciousness, especially when it comes to ensuring children stay in school. “We also have the walking bus – and I have two; one in the Seawinds area and Public spaces across Cape Town are littered with debris and one in the Pelican Park ar- the City hopes to address this R350 million isea.” sue. Arrest made for unlicensed firearm A 29-year-old man was arrested by Steenberg police’s crime prevention unit at about 19:50 on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Officers were doing stop

and search operations in St Alexander Circle, Lavender Hill, when they found the man with a Silver .38 special revolver with the serial number filed off and five rounds of ammunition.

School spirit bounces back RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

Y

et another school has been hit by criminals who broke in and stole essential teaching tools from several classrooms last week. “We arrived at school on Monday morning (27 January) to find that three classes had been broken into,” says Sibelius High School’s principal, Armien Samodien. The rooms were stripped of computer equipment. “Three data projectors and other technology have been stolen. They ripped out the support structures – the mounting of the projectors – too. In the technology classroom, there is a smart board with a desktop computer and speakers. They took all of that,” he adds. The school, which is supported by security company ADT, has not suffered a burglary in “a very long time”. “It’s not something that happens regular-

ly at the school. We fear someone saw the school as an easy target,” says Samodien. The thieves entered the school without triggering the revamped security systems or being spotted by nearby residents. “Last year, we upgraded the electrical system at the school. There’s not a dark patch, so these guys were really taking a chance. We have no idea how they did it because the gates were all locked and there are no holes in the fencing,” he explains. He says the robbery has affected teaching, which is disappointing as spirits have been high since school started last month. In the past two weeks, the school celebrated top achieving learners and parents showed their support for their childrens’ development. The cost of the stolen goods will have an impact on the school’s budget, says Samodien. “Fortunately, we are insured. The alumni of Livingstone High School identified the school and gave us two data projectors at the

end of last year, so we have some spare,” Samodien says optimistically. Going forward, the school will be looking at ways to prevent such crimes. “The rooms that were burgled were the ones that had ordinary padlocks.” The school will be replacing the older padlocks with more secure ones at a cost of R350 each. He says this makes a dent in the budget – money which he would rather have spent on purchasing educational tools for the learners. Steenberg police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg confirmed that a case of housebreaking and theft had been opened with the police. “According to reports, some classrooms were broken into and computer equipment to the value of R17 000 were stolen. The suspects are unknown and yet to be arrested.” V Anyone with information about this incident, can contact Steenberg police station on 021 702 9000 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Rugby skills clinic helps scores of children AVRIL FILLIES

Treu (coaches), Cecil Afrika, Siya Kolisi, Gcobani Bobo, Scarra Ntobeni, (players), Shalom Gavor and Lyndon Bray (head of Sanzar referees),” Rasivhenge says. His commitments as a referee of world rugby requires him to travel the world, so he is not always able to be at the coaching clinics. “We have built a strong team of 40 to 50 volunteers, specifically in Hout Bay, and this community project is about giving back to the community. When I am around, I run the show but we have managed to put a team together that carries on with the work while I am away. “Skill development is an important cognitive tool for the kids and we specifically focus on this by using many different tools so kids can have fun. At the same time, they learn skills to enhance their thinking. A lot of the kids are very young and underprivi-

leged in the townships of Hout Bay and we decided to focus on skills. The contact part of rugby is complicated and skills are our main aim,” Rasivhenge says. He aims to develop the next generation of referees. “I recently moved to Hout Bay and thought it would be a great opportunity to give back to the two townships, Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu. “I love Hout Bay and it is my new village. At the last event, we had 106 kids, which was amazing. Our first event was attended by 38 kids. Then it grew immensely over two months. Attendance at the beach event has been as high as 138 kids, so we are doing well and are now averaging over 100 kids per event,” Rasivhenge says. When he has me-time, he loves hiking, playing social golf and giving back to the community.

Kids from Hout Bay are benefitting from skills development rugby coaching provided by Rainbow Republic (RR). The skills clinic was founded by two local boys in a quest to give back to the community. Rasta Rasivhenge, a world rugby referee, and Brett Bayvel say the clinic is focused on community upliftment by working with kids from disadvantaged backgrounds. “We are committed to using rugby as a tool to develop disadvantaged and vulnerable youth. Besides the health benefits, direct rugby coaching improves emotional wellbeing and increases life skills (teamwork, leadership, decision making, communication). It also leads to improved education by providing pathways to success for talented and dedicated individuals through scholarships to top local schools and tertiary education,” says Bayvel. “The skills clinic was my idea as part of a community service I wanted to pursue. I wanted to give back to the community that I live in and to the broader community of passionate rugby supporters. “I pitched the idea to Mitsubishi Motors SA and now it is the proud partner and sponsor of this initiative which ensures children leave with a sense of pride, a smile on their young faces and something for them to look forward to,” he says. The coaching clinics are hosted every week on Sundays on the beach or at the Kronendal Primary School. The skills development coaching develops a range of skills which include passing and continuity. No contact is made but the emphasis is on skills development and the use of shadow ball to enhance the skills. “The first clinic was held in Johannesburg in November last year and since then we have hosted six more in Hout Bay. We feed the kids and also hand out stationery packs and T-shirts, including other donations we receive. Kids from Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay, enjoying the skills development coaching “I am assisted by Bafana Nhleko, Paul held on the beach.

Yankees beat Eagles in KO semi NOORE NACERODIEN

T

he Turfhall softball stadium was abuzz when Westridge Yankees beat Khayelitsha Eagles 11-7 in the men’s Major League knockout semi-final on Sunday 2 February. Eagles took seven hits off veteran pitcher Wendall Solomons who struck out seven batters and gave up six free bases. Yankees out-hit their much-fancied opponents taking 11 hits off Moses Molaba. Solomons also led the offensive for Yankees with a superb 3-4 batting performance, including a double and a triple. Yankees will meet their old foes, Hamiltons, who defeated a young Tantasport 14-8, in the finals in March. In the women’s Super League knockout semi-finals, Lavender Hill easily defeated Kenfac Phillies 13-0. The win means they will meet Westridge Yankees, the only team that beat them this year, in the final in March. Yankees booked their place in the final after beating a gallant Glenthorn A’s 13-8 after the teams were deadlocked at eight-all in the sixth innings. It was the power batting of Nicole Williams (3-4), Jacky Adonis (2-3) and Nuraan Williams (2-4) that saw the Yankees cross the finish line in style. Lynn Lakay (3-4) shone with the bat for A’s.

US college tour The week-long visit by the Gustavus Adolphus College from Minnesota in the United States of America, was a hit with officials and players. The morning clinic, conducted by the visitors, was well attended by young players from local clubs and schools. Later in the afternoon, the college team showed their on-the-field prowess in their first of three matches against a Cape Town Softball Association (CTSA) representative team. The CTSA team came out tops 3-2. The college plays two further matches on Wednesday 5 and Friday 7 February, both at 19:00. Results: Saturday 1 February (league): Super League: Glenthorn A’s 2, Kenfac Phillies 12; Falcons 14, Heideveld Yankees 1; Westridge Yankees 2, Lavender Hill 1 Major League: Table View Tornados 1, Westridge Yankees 11; Lavender Hill 0, Belhar Dolphins 7; Falcons 13, Kuils River Cougars 7 First League: Lavender Hill 3, St Martins 9; Blackheath 6, Battswood 20; Khayelitsha Eagles 5, Crusaders 2; Glenthorn A’s 0, Panthers 10 Second League:
