Staircases and windows are currently being replaced in ward 110, with the installation of gutters and painting to take place soon.
STEENBERG | LAVENDER HILL
Major upgrades for ward 110 RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
T
he new windows installed at the ward 110 flats in Steenberg and Lavender Hill are just a small indication of the upgrades yet to come for residents. Shanen Rossouw, councillor for ward 110, divulged her plans for the impending upgrade to People’s Post; making mention of a new paint job, gutters, staircases and more that will serve to regenerate the southern communities. “This is long overdue – how old are the flats? They’re about 40 or 50 years old and
this is the first time we are going to replace the windows,” she says. “Because of the age of the flats, the windowsills cracked, so they’re busy fixing that. The next project is to replace the stairs. They’re replacing the stairs in Steenberg now, and next will be in Lavender Hill,” she adds. The dilapidated staircases have long been a major concern, with residents expressing their concern for their condition to the executive mayor of Cape Town, Dan Plato, during a walkabout of Lavender Hill earlier this year (“Mixed emotions on Plato’s visit”, People’s Post, 30 April).
“The residents are so glad and so appreciative. It was all quite difficult because it all depends on funding and we requested more funding because they (the City of Cape Town) could see the need for the replacement of the windows and the stairs because that is the safety priority – the stairs,” Rossouw explains. She also assures residents that they will commence with the painting of the flats soon and will be installing gutters to keep rain from entering homes and causing illness. “We’re moving at a very fast pace in terms of service delivery,” she says. Rossouw adds that the aesthetic upgrades

would not decrease crime, but the cameras installed in the wards – which have cost almost R2 million – have worked to decrease crime. More cameras are on the way and she is confident this will create a safer community. “Crime is a priority in my ward,” she assures residents. Also, she says the roll out of electricity boxes for the backyarders in Cafda and Lavender Hill will commence shortly. Rossouw says the happiness of her residents is of the utmost importance and the upgrades will show how much she values them.

Dog fighting a rising concern RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
O
n Wednesday 16 October, a 13-year-old Ocean View resident’s dog went missing after he followed her to school in the morning. Little did she know he had been picked up during the day and forced to fight another dog. After losing the fight, and being critically injured, the dog’s head was smashed in with a rock. One of the dogfighters “threw a boulder on the dog’s head and then it died”, explains In-

PINK POWER ALL YEAR ROUND: On the last day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Thursday 31 October, Where Rainbows Meet Training and Development Foundation hosted an information session with over 50 women. The participants were students and women from different projects. “Our aim was to give them the relevant information, tips and advice on everything breast cancer-related, and tell them how it is important as women to support each other, especially those grieving over lost loved ones due to cancer,” said Kyle Cupido, project manager at the foundation. “We ended the month on a high, reflecting on the month that was, and promising to keep raising awareness throughout the year.”
LAVENDER HILL
Celebrating 25-year milestone RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
F
aith Community Church (FCC) in Lavender Hill celebrated 25 years of spiritual and community upliftment with a flurry of activity on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October. Marked with a ceremony, the 25-year celebration presented the church’s pastors with an opportunity to reflect on the years gone by, and to also open up about their vision for further community development in
the near future. Pastor Basil Leukes, on completion of his internship at St Montague Baptist Church, opened his own ministry called FCC. By opening the church he sought to serve the people from wherever he was able to; hosting services at Lavender Hill High School, Lavender Hill civic centre and later at Southern Hill Baptist Church. In 2012, half the church went up in flames, forcing Basil and his wife, Pastor Sheila, to relocate once again. They set up their first
“hokkie” and began services at the premises where they still serve the community today, on St Simon Street in Lavender Hill. “The purpose of us being on this hill is to impact this community and this generation, with the gospel of Jesus Christ, with practical ministry where we feed people and have community development meetings,” Basil says, adding that they have also been lobbying for local Sakkiesdorp residents to be awarded the title deeds of their homes. In the future, he would like to build a skills school on the property, where they would be able to empower the community by teaching carpentry and trade skills. Currently, they are conceptualising ways to empower the youth following the loss of several youth members who could no longer make it to church engagements as a result of the gang violence in the area and the lack of safe transport. Their idea is to launch a creative arts school, with dancing classes for youth to take part in fun recreational activities and keep them away from the social ills. They will also be liaising with an organisation who will provide resources and training to a support group for ex-drug addicts, in November. The group was started by a resident who saw the need to address drug addiction. The intended outcome of this collaboration is to open a rehabilitation centre in Lavender Hill to meet the needs of a community that is rife with addiction, according to Basil. V For more information on the projects taking place at Faith Community Church, call pastors Basil or Sheila Leukes on 061 945 6239 or 060 308 2818.
Husband and wife, pastors Basil and Sheila Leukes celebrate the 25-year anniversary of their church.

Perfect weekend for Lavender Hill NOORE NACERODIEN
L
avender Hill had a perfect weekend when they won both their games in the Super League of the Cape Town Softball Association at the weekend. On Saturday, the young lasses from the Hill easily beat Glenthorn A’s 11-3. A’s could only muster three hits from the Hill’s pitching duo of Melissa Savage and Grivonne Rhoda. The Hill’s batters also showed no mercy to Mushfieka Abdurahman and Chante Pepino who shared the pitching duties on the mound for A’s. They amassed a total of 11 hits from the luckless duo with Miché Hendricks (3-4) and Jadine Davids (2-2) topping the batting for the Hill. The Hill found the going tougher against Falcons on Sunday 3 November, running out 4-2 winners in a tight contest.
