A

male southern elephant seal called Buffel is on Fish Hoek Beach and residents are urged not to disturb him as this might be stressful for him.

Named Buffel by the researchers who tagged him, he has caused a bit of a stir among local beach goers.

According to information on the Animal Ocean website, Buffel is believed to be from the Marion Island colony about 2100km away and is resting on our beach while moulting.

Moulting is a process of shedding old skin or fur to make way for new growth. This can take up to a month and during this period the seal does not eat.

Due to the lack of knowledge about the southern elephant seal, Animal Ocean decided to erect a sign at the beach with a bit of information about the seal. The sign reads that beach goers must not disturb the seal, saying: “The elephant seal is healthy and authorities know about him. During moulting the elephant seal does not eat and stays on shore for three to four weeks. The individual is Buffel and was tagged in 2014 in Cape Point. Elephant seals have no fear of hu-

mans or dogs. They think we are big penguins,” reads the sign at the beach, People’s Post tried to get more information about Buffel from Animal Ocean but with no luck. However, the person who answered the phone said they were not willing to comment on the seal and “we don’t want it (Buffel) in the media as a lot of people will go there.”

She went on to say that having a lot of people around can be distressing for the seal.

According to information on the Animal Ocean website, Buffel was tagged (16577) by Steve Kirkman at Buffels Bay in Cape Point in November 2014.

He has since popped up in Paternoster and

Hermanus. Buffel was estimated to be three years old at the time he was tagged.

Animal Ocean first recognised this individual last year when he took up residence at Duiker Island in Hout Bay for about three months, says the website.

He is now around seven-years-old and has developed the characteristic nose of his species. His left eye is damaged and there is a scar above it.

The sign at Fish Hoek Beach goes on to say: “Buffel will return to the ocean when he is ready. Enjoy having him on the beach and please take care of him, by reducing noise and [keeping] distance around him.”

This year the theme “Vuka Ukhanye: Arise and Shine!” was the result of brainstorming sessions between participating groups, organisers and artists from more than 50 neighbourhoods across Cape Town, the organisers of the event say.

“Vuka Ukhanye: Arise and Shine!” was the bold statement that culminated from these creative and fun workshops.

The 2019 theme incorporates everything that the Carnival family feels truly depicts “Vuka Ukhanye: Arise and Shine!”

Police nab four over robbery Muizenberg police officers were alerted to a robbery which had just occurred on the catwalk on Friday 25 January.

The complainant and a friend were jogging on the catwalk when one of them was approached by an unknown man and woman asking them random questions.

Muizenberg police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Knapp, said the complainant continued jogging and a short while thereafter, two men approached him and threatened him with a knife and demanded his cellphone.

“The suspects made off with the cellphone and the complainant proceeded to report the incident to police.

“Constable Darren Stuart immediately followed up on the information and description provided by the complainant and after a short intensive pursuit, they arrested all four suspects, who were found in

possession of the stolen cellphone and the knife used in the robbery,” he said.

Knapp said the suspects, aged 19, 26, 29 and 36, residents of Parkwood, Lavender Hill and Military Heights, were detained at Muizenberg Police Station on charges of robbery. They appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 28 January.

“The cellphone was returned to the owner who was extremely pleased with the response and service provided by the officers.

“Lieutenant-Colonel Maggie Rossouw, acting station commander of Muizenberg police, was extremely pleased with the arrest and speedy action of her members.

She further appealed to all members of the public to be alert and report crime to their local police as soon as it happens,” said Knapp.

Cape Town Carnival creative director Brad Baard says: “The parade is a vivid journey of awakening, from sunrise and literally waking up in the morning, to symbolically waking up your own power.”

This year, some of the community organisations involved in bringing the Carnival to life this year are the Heideveld Theatre Company, Likhwezi Arts Project based in Khayelitsha, and Project Playground based in Langa.

The Cape Town Carnival, held annually in March, is a year-long programme culminating in a street parade that showcases and celebrates the diversity of Cape Town and South Africa.

For several hours on a late-summer evening, more than 50 energetic and talented community performance groups, spectacular floats, giant puppets and extravagant costumes bring the Green Point Fan Walk alive, while thousands of spectators from all over the world converge along the 1.2km parade route.

This year, the Green Point Fan Walk will come alive with colour and splendour on Saturday 16 March.

This is a free event that attracts thousands of spectators who celebrate the culture, diversity and creativity of the city, encouraging social cohesion.

Pipe to be replaced As part of the Kommetjie Road upgrade project the existing 400mm diameter water pipe between 21st Avenue, Fish Hoek and Ou Kaapseweg, which has burst on numerous occasions, is to be replaced soon.

The pipes and fittings have arrived on site and Martin and East is now preparing to clear the route of the new replacement pipeline. This route is along the south side of Kommetjie Road from Ou Kaapseweg and then crosses the westbound carriageway of Kommetjie Road to continue in the median island, crossing Corsair Way, where it enters Sun Valley.

The pipeline ties into an existing valve chamber on the west side of 21st Avenue.

Clearing of the route entails the removal of a number of trees and this process will be carried out within a week. Where possible some trees will be trimmed.

In Frigate Crescent, Sun Valley Road widening on the northern road edge will be done between Ou Kaapseweg and No. 41 Frigate Crescent. Along this section of road one tree will be removed and a second tree trimmed.

tation 10 Simon’s Town National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) offered their sincerest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the diver who lost his life on Saturday 26 January.

Darren Zimmerman, NSRI Simon’s Town station commander, said that at 15:03 on Saturday 26 January, NSRI Station 10 Simon’s Town was activated by Cape Medical Response (CMR) to reports of a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in progress at Long Beach.

Zimmerman said two adult male divers were scuba diving off-shore of Long Beach, and one of the divers reportedly fell unconscious while under water.

“His dive buddy dumped his scuba gear and rescued him towards the shore where he raised the alarm.

“Pisces Dive School divers happened to be

on the beach at the time and their divers waded into the surf and assisted both men out the water and commenced CPR efforts on the one man. NSRI Simon’s Town, CMR, CoCT Fire and Rescue Service and the SA Police Service responded.

“WC Government Health EMS was placed on alert. CPR efforts were continued by paramedics and following extensive CPR efforts a pulse was restored and the man was transported to hospital by CMR ambulance in a critical condition.

“His dive buddy was transported to hospital by CMR ambulance in a serious but stable condition.A Police Dive Unit recovered the dive gear from approximately 50m offshore at a 6m depth. NSRI commends Pisces Dive School for the efforts at rescuing the two men and beginning CPR efforts,” said Zimmerman.

In a separate incident at 16:47 on Friday 25 January, the NSRI Station 26 Kommetjie crew was activated following a request for assistance from one of the NSRI crew members reporting their dog, a Malamute, being stung by multiple bees in Kommetjie.

The owners were unable to get to their dog because of the swarm of bees and the dog appeared to be suffering multiple stings and an allergic reaction to the bee stings.

Ian Klopper, NSRI Kommetjie station commander, said: “NSRI Kommetjie crew responded and were able to recover the dog despite being stung themselves and the dog was rushed to a local vet where medical treatment was administered, but sadly during the night the dog succumbed to injuries and passed away.

The NSRI convey our condolences to the family,” he said.

HELPING HAND: Staffers at WP Media, distributors of City Vision, People’s Post and TygerBurger, took time off from their workstations to help those in need. As part of Volunteers24 they made sandwiches last Friday for Village Care Centre in St Barbara Street in Lavender Hill. Village Care Centre is a registered non-profit organisation that runs several programmes for school drop-outs who will often be found in the streets and they also have aftercare programmes. The centre also runs an old age home. Officials from the Centre say they are really grateful for the donation as it will go a long way in filling the tummies of the people who come through their doors and those at their old age home. shleigh Buhai’s seven-year wait for a third Ladies’ European Tour (LET) title ended in Cape Town when she won the Investec South African Women’s Open on the Sunshine Ladies’ Tour last March.

South Africa’s leading international golfer became the third player to achieve a hattrick of triumphs and she will take up her title defence when the R2m LET co-sanctioned showpiece returns to Westlake Golf Club from Thursday 14 to Sunday 16 March.

The world number 116 hopes to join LeeAnne Pace with four victories, but believes it will be a tougher task to reach the winner’s circle this year.

“When Investec took up the title sponsorship last year and put the Investec South African Women’s Open back on the LET schedule, the interest in the event really sparked and the tournament drew a strong field of international golfers,” said Buhai.

“I really had to work for the win and now that this year’s Sunshine Ladies’ Tour has two new events – the Jabra Ladies’ Classic at Glendower and the Team Championship at Serengeti – the depth of the field will be even stronger.

“With spots into two LET events, courtesy of the Investec South African Women’s Open and the Jabra Ladies’ Classic, we can expect an even bigger presence of LET players. Several Sunshine Ladies’ Tour players like Lejan Lewthwaite and Nobuhle Dlamini have also made huge strides over the last 12 months. Pace and Stacy Bregman are always dangerous and, if you factor in the international entries, the level of competition will be even higher.

“I am coming back with the goal of defending the title, but it won’t be a walk in the park. I will have to bring my A-game to Westlake to finish in front.”

Pace will also be back, chasing title number five, and Bregman, now the third highest ranked South African in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings at number 306, is targeting a maiden win.

“The Investec South African Women’s Open trophy is definitely on my bucket list,”

“I didn’t practise much ahead of the first event on the LET in Abu Dhabi and I got the bad end of the draw for the first two days, so I was really pleased to finish in the top 16. I plan to defend at the Canon Sunshine Ladies’ Tour Open at the end of January and then I am heading to Australia.

“I will be playing four events, including the Australian Women’s Open, and I hope to

build up some good form for Westlake. The Investec South African Women’s Open is the one title we all aspire to win and I came close last year. I went low on the final day to finish fourth, and this year I’m aiming for the winner’s circle.”

Feed your passion for speed This exotic national racing series is open to GT supercars and high-performance sedans, led by a mix of GT3 sports racing cars and locally built GT racers.

Not all the entries are in yet but the pace setter in these races is expected to be Stradale Motorsport team principal Charl Arangies from Vereeniging in Gauteng, who will be bringing either his Aston Martin Vantage GT3 V12 or his Lamborghini Gallardo GT3. Either way, he will start as favourite, with entries expected from Simola Hillclimb hero Franco Scribante in his Porsche 997 Turbo, along with Jonathan du Toit

(Ferrari F430), Jonathan Shenkman (Lamborghini Gallardo), the Porsche 997 Turbos of Nicky Dicks and Dino Scribante, Simon Murray’s very fast Lamborghini GT3, Greg Parton (Lamborghini Huracan), Gianni Giannoccaro (Lamborghini Gallardo) and Dawie Olivier in his giant-killing BMW M3 Turbo.

The Pre-66 Production Cars and Little Giants races will feature monster V8s such as Ford Fairlanes and Mustangs, big Chevrolet sedans, hot Corvettes and more from the golden age before fuel restrictions, mixing it with smaller and more nimble sports cars

Spectators will see (and more importantly, hear) howling Lamborghinis and screaming Ferraris at Passion for Speed.

A big field is expected for the Pre-1980 Classic and Invitation cars, practically guaranteeing close racing. Topping the entry list are Robin Forbes’ thundering 5.7-litre Corvette Stingray and the Ford Sapphire V6 of Steve Hallet, who have already confirmed their participation. They’ll have to put foot, however, to stay with Franco Donadio’s indecently quick Cosworth-engined Ford Escort Mk1, which is expected to set the pace.

A surprise new entry in this category is the Ford Escort Mk1 of Willie Ras, also with 16-valve Cosworth power and nicknamed “Witblitz”, which is expected to be driven at this event by motorsport legend Sarel van der Merwe. If anybody can give Donadio and Forbes a hard time, it’s Supervan. Expect fireworks.

The V8 Masters are a one-make class based at Killarney International Raceway; the cars are all identical, powered by 300kW, 5.7-litre Ford Racing V8s. It’s all down to driver skill and nerve; the racing is always close and often robust – and the sound of more than a dozen big V8s powering down the straights has to be heard (and felt) to be believed.

They will be joined by another local onemake class, the two-litre Opel-powered Makita Supercars, which will make life very interesting for the Masters drivers when they start lapping the smaller cars in the closing stages.

The 45-minute South African Tourist Trophy race will be the second and final leg of this series for classic sports and GT cars, which has also attracted a number of international entries. In addition, there will be races for Historic single-seaters (including Formula One cars from the 1960s) as well as the Mikes Place Clubmans series – regional racing at its very best.

near-capacity crowd flocked to Cape Town Stadium on Sunday 3 February to witness the first pre-season Super Rugby double-header.

The event, dubbed “Superhero Sunday”, signified the unique partnership between SA Rugby and Marvel, putting South African rugby in esteemed company.

Marvel has previously partnered with other sport codes, but this is the first such arrangement with a rugby union in Africa.Each Super Rugby franchise was paired with a Marvel superhero, namely Thor (Stormers), Spider-Man (Lions), Black Panther (Sharks) and Captain America (Bulls).It won’t be the last time the teams don these special jerseys – they will wear them exclusively in most SA derbies.

This collaboration echoes previous Marvel partnerships like the recent Australian Open and the National Rugby League where fans arrived daily dressed in the gear of popular Marvel characters to support their favourites.

In the day’s finale, the Stormers scored five tries in a thrilling 33-28 win against the Bulls.

The Stormers made an encouraging start and dominated territory and possession early on, but the opening try came from the defence as a big hit shook the ball loose for Scarra Ntubeni to pounce on. The hooker raced away before finding flyer Seabelo Senatla, who finished with ease.Flank Jaco Coetzee broke free soon after and surged into the 22 where he gave the ball to scrumhalf Jano Vermaak who was brought down. Flyhalf Josh Stander hit the ball at pace on a great angle to go over for the second try.The score went out to 21-0 when wing SP Marais intercepted and raced away, skipping out of the last tackle just short of the tryline and then thumping the conversion over as well.The Bulls responded with tries from flyhalf Handre Pollard and Ivan van Zyl to bring themselves within seven points.

The Stormers made it four tries in the first half when No. 8 Juarno Augustus charged down and collected to score and although the Bulls had the final say in the first half with a try from fullback Warrick Gelant, the Stormers took a 26-21 advantage into the half-time break.The Bulls took the lead for the first time in the game just after half-time with a try from close range from flank Paul Schoeman which was converted by replacement Manie Libbok to put them 28-26 ahead.Both teams were impressive on defence in the second half, scrambling and holding out the waves of attacks.

The Stormers put together a period of sustained pressure and they eventually found a way through as lock Chris van Zyl went over with just five minutes left to seal the 33-28 win.
