OCEAN VIEW

Fresh start for pupils TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

L

earners at Kleinberg Primary School in Ocean View had a fresh start to a new year with brightly painted classrooms. Through the help of a teacher at the school and the generosity of other people, 10 classroom were given a new lease on life. The 48-year-old school serves learners from Redhill, Masiphumelele and Ocean View. Over the years, the school got run down. None of the learners pay fees. There are about 34 classrooms and the school has 1160 learners. Their hope is to have all the classrooms revamped.

Through the project they call Teach Peace, former learners and other good Samaritans have been revamping the classes at the school one after the other (People’s Post, ‘Making classrooms shine bright’, 13 November). One of the teachers behind this project, Tasneem Abrahams-Sylvester, says following the article that was published in People’s Post they got an overwhelming response. “I sent the article to a donor in the US and they started to crowd fund. With the help of friends and family we got more funds and we are happy to say that we managed to revamp 10 classes,” she says. Abrahams-Sylvester adds that the look on

the learners’ faces when they saw the classrooms cannot be put into words. “It was an exciting feeling to see them look at their classrooms with so much pride. When they saw their classrooms most of them couldn’t hold the excitement and their faces lit up. It gives me great pride, knowing that we can give this to our learners. “They spend a lot of hours in these classrooms, so we have to ensure that we make them conducive for the learners so that they enjoy their time here. This will be their home for the next year, so we had to ensure that it is conducive for learning,” she says. Although there are still some classes left to be done, Abrahams-Sylvester says they

hope they will get more help and do at least one class every second weekend. In a previous interview with People’s Post, school principal Zaffie Oppelt said the school is an old cardboard and it is falling apart. “We really appreciate the help we have got. It means a lot for our learners. When the learners came into the revamped classrooms and saw the way it was done with bright colours it was a beautiful thing to watch. They were all smiles and so happy that the classrooms look beautiful and you could see it made their day,” said Oppelt. V To help the school, call 021 783 1741 or email kleinbergps@gmail.com.
