Bottle brings in funds TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

A

fundraiser was held at the Royal Cape Yacht Club to support and mentor maritime students from less advantaged backgrounds who are aspiring to pursue a maritime career.

The event was held on Friday 7 December with the proceeds from the ticket sales, auction and raffle going to Marine Inspirations, a charitable organisation which is the brainchild of two semi-retired South African yacht captains who reflected upon what a wonderful and exciting life they had led and decided to share their knowledge with learners that want to follow in their footsteps. They call this “sending the elevator back down to the ground floor”.

Marine Inspirations supports Lawhill Maritime Centre in Simon’s Town and the General Botha Old Boys’ Association Bursary Fund, which in turn supports learners who want to be in the maritime industry. General Botha Old Boys’ Association started a very successful bursary fund in 2011 and currently sponsors 19 students from underprivileged backgrounds, who are boarding and studying at the Lawhill Maritime Centre.

Phil Wade and Anthony Just started Marine Inspirations with the idea of showing young, underprivileged South African students the superyacht industry which is another possible avenue in the marine employment world.

They fly the youngsters (typically aged 17 or 18 and still at school) overseas and introduce them to the world of international sailing. “We thought we have been successful and enjoyed a good life at sea so why not do something meaningful for others? The idea is to show them the many varied aspects of

They fly them from South Africa to Mallorca where they both live and there they live aboard a 25m classic sailing schooner built in

1930. Here they get hands-on experience with sailing, rope work, navigation and all aspects of life aboard a sailing vessel. In between they are taken to many maritime support companies such as ship-

yards, medical kit suppliers, satellite communications, uniform suppliers and many others. For most of them it is the first time out of the country and the first time on an aeroplane and it is all a life-chang-

ing experience,” says Wade.

The Mexican-themed Big Bottle of Wine Party (BBWP), a fundraiser held at the Royal Cape Yacht Club was an enormous success.

Be aware of mosquitoes bites TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

W

ith people doing all they could to be ready for the water problem that was predicted for Cape Town, people went to great lengths to keep and catch water.

Little did they know that by doing so they were inviting problems to their doorsteps.

Due to stagnant water and open water collections, some areas have seen an increase in mosquitoes Kevin Rack of Muizenberg Lakeside Ratepayers’ Association (MLRA): Environmental Portfolio, who is also a volunteer at Muizenberg Improvement District: Environment, says they have seen an increase in mosquitoes. “Yes indeed we in Muizenberg/Lakeside/Marina Da Gamma (everywhere there are rainwater tanks) started having mosquito issues when the first heatwave struck around a month ago. I spend a lot of time around Zandvlei conducting litter cleanups and had no mosquito bites until I got home. Then a few of my colleagues complained too so it got my curiosity piqued.

“I lived in Australia for 13 years and the

issues of water tanks and mosquitoes is common knowledge, so much so that it’s law that all rainwater tanks are fitted with strainers on all inlets and outlets. It only took me five minutes to realise where the problem lay. So as soon as I opened the rainwater tank lid a huge swarm exited from the tank. Then when I looked into the water of the tank it was dark with larvae,’’ he says.

Now Rack is urging residents to be careful as mosquitoes can be a health hazard.

“Please note that mosquitoes do have the ability to transmit disease. Cape Town is clear of many of the major diseases, but due to climate change and evolution, when there is an excess of one species, disease can occur. Let’s not be caught out by the poor management of the drought, but rather be proactive citizens and manage the problem ourselves before there is another disaster.

Below are some interventions by Rack to help the situation.

.Gutters: Make sure there is no standing water in your gutters and they are cleaned of all debris (fire prevention maintenance). .Pools and ponds: Drain them of all water. .Bird baths: Change all water regularly.

Chemical solutions: .Do not add any chemicals to water tanks used for drinking water. The best natural way to kill the larvae is to starve them of oxygen. .Oil: Olive oil or vegetable oil creates a skin on top of the water, starving the larvae of oxygen. Use 1 cup/250ml. .Apple cider vinegar: A great non-toxic meth-

od to kill larvae and can be used as a repellent. Use 15% to 85% water. A weak solution won’t kill larvae. .Soap: Untested method – a couple of teaspoons of dishwashing liquid. .Kerosene: One teaspoon of medicinal paraffin or domestic kerosene (not commercial or industrial kerosene). .Bleach: Do not use “Be natural and kind to yourselves and the world around you.”

Maintenance: .Inspect the tanks for cracks and leaks.

Proactive prevention: .Water tanks: Seal the lid with gaffer tape and plastic. Use a ball of netting in both the inlet and overflow. If using screens, make sure they are removable.

Repair garage probed A

civilian mechanical repair workshop is operating from one of the unused sheds on the naval unit base.

Commander Greyling van den Berg said the chief of the South African Navy, Vice-Admiral Mosiwa Hlongwane, was made aware of a civilian company operating from SAS Wingfield without the required authority.

“A whistle-blower reported this situation to the South African Navy headquarters and that resulted in a surprise visit by the chief of the South African Navy to SAS Wingfield (last Thursday). It came to light that a civilian mechanical repair workshop is operating from one of the unused sheds on the base. The chief of the Navy sees this matter in an extremely serious light and will leave no stone unturned to determine who authorised this arrangement and whether any naval officer may have benefited unduly. The company in question will be ordered to vacate the premises,” he said.

L

aw Enforcement Auxiliary Services (LEAS) in the South Peninsula are now in a much better position to fight crime due to a vehicle they recently received.

The vehicle was made possible by councillor Aimee Kuhl, who allocated R250 000 from her ward budget for this purpose.

Kuhl says LEAS is made up of ordinary citizens who are going the extra mile to keep our communities safe. “This group of guys and girls have gone through the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement training and now patrol our streets. They do not receive a salary for this. The police, as a national body, is severely under-resourced. The City will never have the budget to match the SAPS officer numbers we are entitled to as a mega metropole. So I saw it fit to get a ward allocation and get this car. Before they had this car, Law Enforcement officers had to wait for a vehicle from the permanent fleet to become available, hampering their progress,” she says.

Despite all the challenges Kuhl says they are immensely grateful for the important work the LEAS does. “LEAS are relatively new – the team graduated at the beginning of the year. They have significantly contributed to arrests in the past months and you will see them on the ground during the upcoming festive season which is the busiest time of the year along our coast. LEAS are significantly contributing to arrests and are an integral part of visible policing.”

Kuhl says she personally has gone on

night patrol with the LEAS team and has witnessed how challenging fighting crime is. “Irrespective of the lack of manpower and resources, everyone displays a huge amount of dedication to the task. So it only seems fitting that they deserve a bit of pixie dust with four wheels to help them do their job,” she says.

This is their first vehicle and Kuhl has plans for another car in 2019. “It’s a small

step in the right direction.

“It’s time that national government finally takes responsibility for their under-resourcing and mismanagement. Residents must also be mindful of their surroundings – don’t leave boxes of electronics or other Christmas presents on the sidewalk on refuse collection day. This will make work easier for our officers and keep everyone a little safe,” she says.

“Given our experience during the drought, and the current loadshedding imposed by Eskom, we are also focusing on preserving our scarce resources. The facility will be equipped with a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) panel system for electricity generation. Also, part of the plan is to sink a borehole for non-potable water uses at the facility, and then we’ll also collect rainwater from the roof which will be stored in tanks,” Purchase says.

The minibus taxi operators are currently operating from erf 1728 – a vacant erf with no services or facilities for commuters and operators. Local residents are exposed to wind, sun, and rain while they are waiting for taxis, and there are no ablution facilities or safe walkways. The new minibus taxi facility will provide residents with a safe and dignified area for waiting and connecting with their fellow commuters.

“Residents must take a closer look at the administration building that is almost completed. It has a modern look and feel, and is a dignified space where operators and management can conduct meetings. The drop-off and pick-up facilities will have roofed coverings which are already visible on the site. Furthermore, there will be universally accessible walking lanes for safe and easy access to the facility. Apart from ablution facilities, we will also create a waiting

The new minibus taxi facility on the corner of Kommetjie and Pokela roads in Masiphumelele in the Far South is on track to be completed by February.

The City of Cape Town is spending about R13.8m on the new minibus taxi facility for commuters from Masiphumelele.

“The project commenced in May this year. I drive past this site almost every day and have been keeping an eye on the progress. I’m pleased to say that the contractor is on track to complete the new facility by the end of February next year. This is good news as we are heading into the builders’ holiday period, meaning about 3300 commuters from Masiphumelele will be using this brand new facility early in 2019,” says the Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase.

About 60 minibus taxis will operate from the new facility, which will serve commuters travelling to and from Simon’s Town, Fish Hoek, Noordhoek and Kommetjie.

Masiphumelele community leader Tshepo Moletsana, who also serves on the taxi rank steering committee, says they are happy about the new facility. “They have finally heard our cries and we will officially have our own taxi rank.

he City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre (DRMC) paid tribute to its volunteers on Saturday 8 December at its 17th annual awards ceremony.

A total of 35 volunteers were honoured for reaching various long-service milestones equalling 295 years of service.

In addition, 17 certificates of appreciation and commendation were handed over to individuals for their contribution to the volunteer corps.

The recipients were from Athlone, Atlantis, Belhar, Fish Hoek, Macassar, Melkbosstrand, Milnerton, Mitchell’s Plain, Ottery and Scottsdene.

“The City is in the enviable position of

having nearly 400 active DRMC volunteers who devote their time and energy towards the organisation’s safety and security efforts­.

“They put in hundreds of hours each month, assisting with everything from humanitarian relief coordination efforts to assisting firefighting efforts in summer and even the installation of smoke detectors as was the case in Khayelitsha at the beginning of December. We could not achieve what we do as an administration without them and I personally would like to thank each and every one of our volunteers for their selfless dedication to a greater cause,” said Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith.

CRIME WRAP Ocean View: Police efforts to root out crime are continuing. Sergeant Leon Fortuin says their endeavours to fight crime, which may threaten the safety and security of the community, yielded success on Thursday 13 December when crime operations were conducted by the Ocean View police’s Crime Prevention Unit.

The operation led to the arrest of a 34-year-old woman for charges relating to dealing in drugs.

Earlier in the evening the police received information that drugs were being sold from an address in Masonwabe Street, Masiphumelele. The police then monitored the house and saw some suspicious activity at the premises.

The officers then waited for the opportune moment to search the premises and when they swooped, they found one woman suspect alone at the premises. They searched the premises and found 832g of cocaine with an estimated street value of R375 232, 1.572kg of tik with an estimated street value of R62 880, as well as 53 Mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R2650. The suspect was charged and was due to appear in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court. The station’s management thanked the public for the tip-off, as well as members of the Crime Prevention Unit for their efforts. This is one of the largest recoveries of drugs in the area in recent memory, police say.

new Mayoral Committee structure has been approved for the City of Cape Town.

Mayor Dan Plato on Thursday announced Council’s approval for the establishment of a new Mayoral Committee (Mayco) structure.

“I believe that this structure will promote a more streamlined focus, allowing for more effective and efficient service delivery to the people of Cape Town. A

Sun Valley resident with a love for making model boats is exhibiting his work from his home until Thursday 24 January, for free.

Ron Fuller (85) is exhibiting 14 self-created model ships and boats and is available in person to explain the various ships and boats as well as how he built them.

“This is something I have been doing for years. I love the boats and I make different kinds of boats. We have had this show for some time. I was in the building industry for some time and I just love boats,” he says.

The boats Fuller has made include a fireboat, yacht, motor launch and Viking ship, among many others.

“I started doing this in 1979. I really love what I do. A lot of people ask me how long

it really takes – truth is, I don’t really know.

Some boats take time, others don’t. Others can take years. A lot of time goes into making a boat.”

The exhibition has been running since Sunday 16 December at 31 Barque Crescent and is open to everyone. Although entry to the event is free, Fuller says those that want to may make a donation towards the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) are welcome.

NSRI is a charity staffed by volunteers who are on call, day and night throughout the year. They have rescue bases along the coast and on inland dams. Among other activities, they visit schools around the country teaching children about water safety, what to do in an emergency and how to do basic hands-on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

A good year for Tears The Tears Animal Rescue Board in Fish Hoek is pleased to report that the organisation has recorded a healthier financial outlook at the end of its current financial year, despite the economic challenges it experienced this time last year.

They announced their annual

general results at a meeting at Café Roux in Noordhoek on Tuesday 4 December.

Tears is a pro-life, non-profit organisation, established in 1999, whose core aim is to rescue, rehabilitate, reunite and rehome lost, abandoned, abused and neglected animals, and to educate the com-

munities within which they operate, in particular the children.

They strive to meet the needs of the low-income communities in the Southern Peninsula by providing free sterilisations, a mobile clinic, subsidised medical support that includes vaccinations, deworming and parasite

control, and providing a registered clinic on their premises, offering veterinary care for pets for almost any condition, illness or injury at a welfare rate.

They remain the only facility in the Cape Peninsula’s Far South that is available seven days a week to treat the hundreds of animals who need treatment each month for a variety of conditions, illnesses and injuries.

Their focus is on sterilisation to prevent unwanted animals from being born into a life of suffering, abuse and neglect. Annually they sterilise in excess of 4000 dogs, cats and rabbits. In addition they are one of the leading organisations in the compassionate sterilisation and management of the peninsula’s feral cat colonies through their Feral Cat Project.

To date they have homed in excess of 17 000 animals.

Ian Reid, Tears Animal Rescue Board chairperson, says: “ We’ve seen a dramatic turnaround from massive financial losses to a significant improvement, thanks in part to the austerity measures that were implemented in December 2017, and the stability of management. The operational reserves have improved to R2.2m from a loss of R1.05m in 2017, on the back of a significant effort made to reduce expenses by R2.4m in 2018. This was achieved by implementing measures to improve efficiencies, such as a re-

duction in employee costs, the rationalisation of supplier contracts and the initiation of strategic corporate partnerships with key suppliers.

“Revenue earned increased by 8.7 % on the previous year primarily due to an 8.2% increase in the sale of goods at Tears Animal Rescue’s four charity shops, and a 9.6% increase in donations and fundraising, respectively,’’ he says.

The board and management team are confident that the operational and management changes that were implemented in 2018 will enable the organisation to grow. But Reid is quick to caution that while Tears Animal Rescue’s annual financial results are positive, the reality is that average operational costs often exceed R1m per month.

“If we want to continue to deliver on the organisation’s rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming mandate, and extend our primary veterinary healthcare and mobile clinic services to address the huge need that exists within the vulnerable communities within which we operate, then we need to continuously refine our revenue models and create sustainable income streams and strategic corporate partnerships that will deliver value to all participating stakeholders,” he concludes.

Know the new rates SANParks announced that Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) will be charging differential tariffs as of Thursday 1 November at all its entry gates.

This announcement was made last year in November.

These entry gates include Cape Point, Boulders, Silvermine, Tokai and the picnic sites.

A year’s notice was afforded to allow the public and commercial business the opportunity to prepare for the rates change.

All the other 19 national parks have been charging differential tariffs since 2005 and Table Mountain National Park has moved to follow suit.

As of 1 November 2018 the park has three rates for entry at the gates: . The standard rate which is what foreign visitors will pay. No documentation is required to be submitted at the gate upon entry on this rate . The SADC rate afforded to those visitors who can prove they are SADC nationals by producing their original passport on arrival at the gate.

This requirement is in place for every adult who enters the park on this rate and not just the driver of the vehicle. . The local rate which South African residents will be charged if they can prove they are SA residents at the gate on entry.

To claim the SA rate on arrival, the accepted documentation is one of the following: SA ID book, SA ID card, SA driver’s licence, SA passport, proof of permanent residency or valid visa (work, spousal, volunteer, retirement, study).

Every adult in the vehicle who wishes to claim the South African rate on entry must provide proof they are South Africans.

It is not sufficient that the driver of the vehicle can prove they are South Africans.

Proof of your local address is regrettably not accepted.

It needs to be an official document as listed above.

Children under 18 do not need to supply proof of South African identification when entering with an adult South African, provided the adult qualifies for the SA rate on the date of entry.

Refunds will not be offered for those who pay the standard tariff on entry and then post-departure submit proof of South African identification.

The park requests all locals visiting the park to have their SA identification at hand when stopping at the gate kiosk to facilitate the quick processing of all vehicles through the gates.

All children over the age of 12 are billed as adults, a policy that applied across all national park gates.

Should you plan to visit regularly, it is suggested that you consider applying for a Wild Card through the loyalty programme.

Pool gets its own water source M

uizenberg residents can now look forward to a cooling summer as their public swimming pool now has its own water source.

The pool is one of 17 public swimming pools that will be open this summer season, with Muizenberg now boasting its own alternative fresh water source.

mented its commitment to conserving water and has started implementing plans to reduce the dependency on potable water to maintain the swimming pools,” Smith says.

With this in mind, the department is continually looking at innovative ways of conserving water while still providing quality amen-

ities to help residents cool off during the summer heat.

“Initially, the plan was to draw saltwater as an alternative water source for the Muizenberg pool, but drilling for a well-point resulted in finding good quality fresh water instead, which will also be used for irrigation,” explains Smith.

An additional well-point was drilled to serve the purpose of a water collection point which operates independently and the water will be used to top up other operational swimming pools.

The cost of drilling the well-point was just over R400 000 and the scope of work included drilling several well-points and connecting them to the water tanks and then to the plant.

Additional work that must still be done includes cutting into the perimeter fence to install an access gate, while a custom fitting will be installed for the standpipe which connects to the department’s water trucks.

Muizenberg has five seasonal lifeguards and one seasonal senior lifeguard on duty. In addition, new equipment at the pool includes a spinal board with head blocks and harness, a shade cover for lifeguards and four wrap-around lifesaving devices. The pool reopened on Saturday 1 December and will close again on Saturday 2 February. “All our operational swimming pools have been fitted with two 10 000F plastic tanks that are used to backwash and filter water that is circulated back into the swimming pool for re-use. By doing this,

the City is saving a substantial amount of water that would have been lost,” says Smith.

Careful consideration went into selecting which facilities to open this summer. Some of the criteria included the accessibility of the facilities and their location in relation to transport routes, but also to ensure equal representation across the four areas of the city.

The Recreation and Parks Department works closely with Law Enforcement to ensure the safety of all swimming pool users, while lifeguards will not only be on duty at the pools but also at the Camps Bay, Maiden’s Cove, Monwabisi, Sparks Bay, Harmony Park, Strandfontein and St James tidal pools.

Bathers and visitors to the city’s swimming pools are reminded of the following: . Obey pool rules and lifeguard instructions . Load-shedding impacts on the operations and water quality and, should water quality be compromised, patrons may be asked to leave the water . Swimming in the proper bathing attire assists in maintaining the water quality for longer . Showers at swimming pools and beaches are still off limits to preserve water “We need our visitors to help us keep water usage to a minimum.

Showers at all public amenities and ablutions will be switched off and waterless hand sanitisers will be provided at most public washrooms,” says Smith.

Algal blooms not toxic False Bay residents do not have to worry about the algal blooms along the False Bay coastline as they are harmless.

The City of Cape Town advises residents that the naturally occurring algal blooms along the False Bay coastline are not toxic and have nothing to do with inland or wastewater quality.

The particular species of algal bloom occurring along the coastline was identified by the National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) as Lepidodimium chloroforum and it has no known toxins.

DAFF holds the mandate to monitor the occurrence of algal blooms as well as for issuing any consumer warnings in the event of a toxic bloom (red tide).

According to a statement released by the City, algal blooms are a normal and common occurrence off the coastline of Cape Town, and South Africa more broadly. The statement clearly explains that the phenomenon is mostly caused by ocean upwel-

ling events that brings colder, nutrientrich water, and the accompanying dinoflagellate cells, into warmer surface waters. The combination of nutrients, warmth and sunlight causes the cells to bloom.

“The algal bloom has dissipated in the False Bay area and the Strandfontein plant is in production again while the Monwabisi plant will be in production again soon.

It must be noted that the City only pays for water that is actually injected into the reticulation system, hence the temporary suspension is not for the City’s account,” reads the statement.

Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for informal settlements, water and waste services and energy, says contractors who have been appointed to run the desalination plants as part of the City’s Water Emergency Augmentation Scheme are contractually required to deliver water that meets South African National Standards (SANS 241:2015) requirements.

“These are the standards set nationally for drinking water quality. The City has a proud record of always meeting these standards. The desalination plants have online monitoring equipment to check the quality of the desalination process and adherence to the SANS standard. Desalination, at this stage, is a relatively small component of our augmentation programme and as such, temporary drops in production are not expected to have a very significant impact on the overall water supply,” she says.

Limberg says the City has for several years been attempting to upgrade the plant but this has been delayed by five tender appeals, including a High Court appeal, and a land claim.

“Encouragingly, most of the upgrade work has been approved by Council in the past few months, and it is expected that work will begin in the first half of 2019. We still, however, require residents to obey the laws which state that nothing should be flushed down the toilet or thrown into manholes which could interfere with the free flow of sewage, such as rags, litter, rubble, cooking oil and fat, and anything other than grey water and toilet paper,’’she adds.

The commissioning of the new plant is anticipated by December 2023. Soon thereafter, a further expansion will be implemented to cater for continuing urban growth in the area. Work will see construction of a membrane bioreactor (MBR), sludge dewatering facilities, new inlet works, pump stations, primary settling tanks and maturation ponds where effluent is purified before discharge.

“Importantly, it must be noted that the City does not discharge untreated sewage into the river. The plant currently operates within the design capacity in terms of flow rates. However, it is over its capacity in terms of nutrient load due to the population growth in the area which is serviced by the plant. The City is implementing a number of initiatives such as the addition of polymers for treatment to settle the nutrients while the expansion is underway.

The City’s sampling and testing frequency has been increased to a weekly schedule, and will include input from the community on agreed sampling locations. These results are being shared with the National Department of Water and Sanitation, and with the CSIR,” concludes Limberg.

vangeline graduates took to the stage to celebrate the successful completion of their six-month Life Skills course with singing and dancing on Saturday 1 December.

A total of 24 students completed the course. The course is an ongoing partnership between Evangeline Ministries and Masicorp and takes place twice a year. During this time, students are taught basic sewing techniques, basic English and computer skills, at no charge.

This free course is extremely popular and has a one-year waiting list. At the end of the course, on successful completion and based on regular attendance, the graduates receive a certificate as well as a sewing machine, which they can continue practising on,

hopefully using the skills they have learnt to either find employment or open their own sewing business.

Started by Dr Wendy Ryan in 2006, the programme is open to women who by education and income are defined as disadvantaged.

“The overwhelming majority of our students are jobless or have minimal employment. For this reason, the programme is free of charge to the students. I started this programme to give skills to women who were HIV positive and needed new sources of income for themselves and their families.

Since then, the programme has expanded to include all economically, socially and educationally disadvantaged women and a few men who live in Masiphumelele and more recently Ocean View and from other townships.

From its inception, we awarded a new sewing machine to students who successfully complete the programme. It runs two six-month semesters with a capacity of 24 students each for a capacity of 48 students annually,” says Ryan.

The graduates showed off their stylish, mostly traditional garments and were greeted to loud cheers and applause from the audience, which was made up of proud family members and friends. Almost all the students (mostly women) had never used a sewing machine or computer before, and many had a limited understanding of English.

Ryan adds she is grateful to God for the journey of cooperation and partnerships, primarily with Masicorp and Living Hope.

Megan Pringle, fundraiser at Masicorp, says the aim of this course is not only to empower these individuals through skills training, but to provide empowerment through personal growth, giving each of them the confidence in themselves to create a better future for themselves and their fam-

ilies. “After successful completion of the course, the graduates have the opportunity to continue learning more about sewing by visiting The Sewing Cafe at the Chasmay Road campus. Here they will learn how to operate an industrial sewing machine and could also be given the opportunity to sew items on commission, assisting The Sewing Cafe to service their clients.

“Masicorp is proud to be continue our valued partnership with the Evangeline Life Skills programme. Ryan and her team show such commitment and support to their students, and we are pleased to see several graduates from our neighbours in Ocean View take part this year. Ocean View is a community struggling with similar issues to Masi, such as crime, unemployment and poverty.

We hope that collaborations such as these will continue to grow, providing opportunities and hope for members from both communitie­s.”

She lauded Masicorp and other funders.

Tug De Mist finally salvaged After several days and nights of ingenuity, tenacity and sheer hard work by those involved, the SA Navy succeeded in bringing Tug De Mist out of the water in the early hours of Thursday 6 December. Tug De Mist sank on Saturday 10 November in the stillwater basin of Simon’s Town Harbour, settling on her port side at a relatively shallow depth of 10m.

Commander Greyling van den Berg says after the Naval Engineering Department and Navy divers conducted a comprehensive assessment, operations commenced to bring her out of the water using a limited array of lifting bags and submersible pumps.

“The salvage entailed raising the tug off the seabed and towing her to the Synchrolift facility about 50m away; however shallow water salvages are known to be extremely difficult (because of the lack of air expansion and buoyancy at this depth),” he says.

Van den Berg says the main challenge ex-

perienced over the last few weeks was trying to make the 39-year-old tug airtight (and thus buoyant). “The divers used underwater welding equipment to seal off holes in order to pump her full of air, but as soon as leaks were sealed, other leaks bubbled to the surface. The personnel of the Armscor Dockyard were however constantly on hand to provide bungs and other mechanisms for leak stopping and shoring.”

On Wednesday 28 November, the Navy divers concentrated all lifting efforts on the aft of the tug, managing to raise her and bring her 2m away from the quay, with her keel resting on the bedrock. The same was achieved on the forward side. The mooring lighter (built by dockyard apprentices more than 100 years ago) was used as mechanism to create further lift. Because of her age, the mooring lighter does not have a generator and cannot operate her capstan. In order to mitigate this, the winch of Tug Umalusi was

used to create this lift through the mooring lighter’s fair leads. The docking plate under the tug kept on getting stuck in the sand during the lifting process, adding to complications. Throughout the lifting process, divers continued sealing off leaks and filling fuel, freshwater and ballast tanks with air.

On Monday 3 December, the naval riggers in conjunction with the naval harbour master, devised a way of using “snatch blocks” to create further buoyancy. The aim was to raise the tug high enough to clear the platform of the Synchrolift. This was achieved on Wednesday 5 December at approximately 15:00. The prevailing airlocks in the tug created balance issues, however, which were finally overcome at around midnight on 5 December. Floating, but still listing slightly, she was finally pulled to the Synchrolift. ‘’The salvage operation and obstacles overcome are an amazing display of teamwork and resourcefulness by the dedicated

This exercise also provided invaluable practical salvage experience for the Navy divers, at no cost to the organisation. Be money wise this season Don’t let fraudsters steal Christmas.

It’s the festive season and for most of us that means holidays, family, fun and for some, the added joy of a Christmas bonus.

For scammers it’s an opportunity to steal money from people while they’re relaxed and less vigilant.

Kalyani Pillay, CEO of the SA Banking and Risk Information Centre, says: “Criminals are masters of social engineering and know just how to exploit human vulnerabilities to perpetuate crimes, particularly over the festive season, when victims tend to let their guard down.”

You may be told you’ve won a Christmas lottery because you bought something from a retailer or online shop, or you’re entitled to a year-end lump sum payment from a financial services provider. All you need to do to receive the money is pay a deposit to cover administration or other costs. Often there’s a deadline to pressure you to respond quickly.

Other variations during the season of goodwill might include being asked to donate to charity or provide a loan to a friend or distant relative.

Alet Griesel, chief risk officer at DirectAxis, says that most scams fall into two categories: those that try to get your money directly such as the lucky windfall or appeal for help, and those that attempt to get your personal or banking details. The criminals impersonate you or raid your bank account at their leisure. “Technology such as the internet and cellphones have made banking, making payments, shopping and other financial transactions much easier, but have also provided more

opportunities for criminals, both in terms of the scams they devise and the number of people they can reach,” she says.

So-called phishing scams typically use email, SMSs or social media to try and obtain your banking or personal information. Common bank scams are when the fraudsters send a message that appears to come from your bank or other reputable organisation and asks you to respond or click on a link and provide details such as your Pin code or other information to confirm a payment into your account.

Depending on the information they’re able to obtain, criminals then either clean out your account or pretend to be you and apply for loans or open retail accounts.

Griesel warns that if you’re complacent about being scammed or think you’re too clever or sophisticated to fall for a scam, you’re a good target for cybercriminals.

You might spot 99.9% of the poorly executed scams, but only need to make one error of judgement.

“Everyone is at risk, from financially savvy company directors to tech-phobic pensioners. The fraudsters identify and exploit vulnerabilities. They may pretend to be a big, new client that could ensure the company meets its budget targets for the year or a helpful bank employee trying to facilitate a pension payment.”

Some scams are so sophisticated and the phoney emails or websites so realistic that afterwards the victims are adamant that they never revealed any personal information. “If you think criminals are hiding behind a well-known brand to try and defraud you, it’s important to report it, even

if you have no intention of responding to the attempted fraud,” says Griesel.

“Most financial services companies have fraud departments and will act immediately to shut down websites, bank accounts and other mechanisms used as part of the fraud. Reporting scams is the best way to fight back. Even if you have spotted the scam, reporting it may prevent others falling victim.”

Tips for avoiding common scams include: . Be suspicious of news that you’ve suddenly won or been left a large amount of money, especially if you haven’t entered a lottery or competition or don’t know the person who’s giving you the money. If it seems too good to be true, it is. . Don’t provide your banking or card information to anyone. Your bank will never contact you requesting your Pin number or a one-time password. . Don’t give personal or financial information to anyone who contacts you and who you don’t know. Sometimes scammers pretend to be from government agencies asking you to update personal information. . Don’t click on hyperlinks in an email, particularly one from an unknown sender.

If you want to transact online, type the bank or company name into your browser. . Only shop online on reputable websites. . Don’t download software from pop-up windows. . Install anti-virus software and update it regularly. . Frequently check your credit rating.

A sudden decline in your rating could indicate someone is using your profile fraudulently­.

Local boys take win

Two local boys recently placed first and second in the u.16 boys’ division of the WP Longboard Champs.

Joshua van Niekerk (16) who attends Muizenberg High School and Joshua Dwyer-Thiem (15) who attends Cedar House took part in the contest which was held in pristine conditions at Long Beach in Kommetjie. The waves were in the three-foot range with a dumpy shore break that claimed at least one competitor’s board.

They are the products of a development programme which has the long-term goal of preparing promising young athletes to compete in and win international contests.

“They are determined, polite, hardworking, humble, respectful and motivated. The dream is that both of them would ultimately be able to make a career as competitive surfers. These two guys have true grit!” says mentor, George Bunting.

hree Cape Town surfers are in the group of the record-setting eight South African surfers who have ended this season’s World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) ranked in the top 100, improving on the five in 2017, three in 2016 and just two in 2015, with Kommetjie’s Michael February the highest ranked Capetonian.

The annual rankings are based on each surfer’s best five results after 64 events rated from QS1000 to QS10 000 on all five continents and featuring a total of 1384 surfers. The top 10 in the rankings automatically qualify for the following year’s elite Championship Tour (CT). Qualification for the limited fields in the biggest QS events for the first half of 2019 will also be based on the 2018 rankings.

Matt McGillivray is the country’s highest ranked QS campaigner, ending the season at No. 30.

Jordy Smith from Durban has been a fixture among the world’s top 32 on the CT for the past 11 seasons and only competed in three QS events this year, finishing No. 38 overall after grabbing fifth and 13th place results in the two QS10 000s in Hawaii along with a

low 73rd place for his token appearance at the Ballito Pro presented by Billabong in June.

Currently CT No. 6 on the CT, Smith is out of contention for the world title heading into the seasonending Billabong Pipe Masters, which started in Hawaii last week, but still has a mathematical chance of becoming the first South African male to clinch the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing (VTCS) title if he can better his career best fifth place result at Pipeline­.

Indeed, the Hawaiian performances of all the Saffas was really encouraging as the QS season wraps up with back-to-back QS10 000s where career-changing qualification hopes and preferential seeding can be realised or dashed on a single heat result.

Hawaiian-based Capetonian Benji Brand is a standout there and already won several events and also earned a coveted wildcard into last season’s Billabong Pipe Masters­.

February completes his rookie CT season at Pipeline and the difficulty of competing on both tours showed in his QS results as he

dropped from 15th to 50th this year, while David van Zyl (Glenashley) has become a force to be reckoned with at both the Hawaiian venues of Haleiwa and Sunset Beach.

The WSL Africa membership base has also increased dramatically to more than 150 and the prize money on offer has kept pace with over R6m up for grabs this year.

Much of that comes from the QS10 000-rated Ballito Pro presented by Billabong which crowned its 50th champion this year and has the distinction of being the world’s longest running professional surfing event.

of them was first or second. Previously underdogs, the friends were overjoyed to have placed in the top two.

“These guys are good friends who support each other to the hilt. They are a great example of friendship, good sportsmanship and pure stoke,” says Carl Zimmerman, chairperson of the WP Longboarding Association.

The youngest surfer was Remi Fourie, who at only 10 years old won the u.16 girls’ division. The oldest surfer, at 70, was Therase Russell. Congratulations were extended to the winner of the open women’s division, Raylin Wynn, and Justin Bing who won the highly competitive men’s open division.

Longboarding in South Africa is growing, having recently expanded the women’s division to accommodate more ladies.

“Being part of Western Province longboarding events feels a lot like belonging to a family.

There’s such a lovely mix of old and young, encouraging each other. Everybody ‘mucks-in’ and gets things done,” says Zimmerman.

s the year draws to a close People’s Post looks back at some of the memorable sporting moments. This has certainly been another action-packed sporting year at local and international level.

However, many local sporting codes took

a break or had their seasons curtailed by the drought which gripped the Western Cape.

Creative thinking and resilience meant certain sports could resume activity for this season, while rains have eased concerns somewhat.

Through the lens of photographer Rashied Isaacs, we are looking back at some 2018 highlights.

The u.16 Youth Cup hosted by Bayview FC may have been under a cloud of doubt for the early part of the year, but still managed to go ahead, under grey skies at the Strandfontein Sports Complex during mid-June. Here are Vasco da Gama’s Diego Hugo and Camps Bay’s Sisonke Lubowana battling for the ball in the tournament’s plate final.

Ottoman Cricket Club’s Zahid Canfield dispatched seven consecutive sixes in a league match against Blue Bells at Ottoman’s home ground in Surrey Estate in November 2016.

Two years later, almost to the exact date, Canfield dished out the same punishment to a hapless Peninsula Cricket Club at the same venue; however, Canfield could only manage six consecutive maximums this time around.

Shortly after the local baseball season kicked off, the national team of France visited South Africa for a seven-match test series. It was the first time in 16 years that South Africa welcomed an international baseball team for a series. South Africa went on to clinch the series 5-2, which concluded in Cape Town on Sunday 11 November.
