KEWTOWN

Murals by residents EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt

esidents of the four Cityowned rental flats facing Klipfontein Road in Kewtown can take pride in inspiring local artists to depict the murals on the walls. It was reported that a workshop was to be conducted for residents of the respective rental units to provide input into what they would like to have painted on the four walls of the two two-storey block of flats, the oldest in Kewtown (“New hue brightens flats”, People’s Post,27 November 2018). Ward councillor Rashid Adams confirms that the project, completed just before Christmas, was done with the full consultation of residents who chose to attend the workshops leading up to the painting of the murals. “Just prior to the painting, a workshop was held with residents. A lot of the residents who are not artistically inclined were able to give their input on what they think should go on the walls. “I sat in on one of the workshops in the programme and it was quite interesting in the way how they got to the point of identifying what it is that should be depicted. “The community was taken into consultation about that. We did not get all the community, but we got a relative amount of people who stay in the rental stock area which was painted, and their input was considered,” says Adams. Each wall has a theme which pays homage to the rich anti-apartheid heritage of Athlone, cultural and sporting traditions of the area, as well as a nod to the gatsby, of which Athlone is widely known to be the home. “The City hopes to demonstrate the ways in which art can contribute towards transformation in vulnerable communities; establish a

positive and stronger neighbourhood identity, and make art more accessible to everyone and thereby improve our public facilities and spaces,” says City of Cape Town mayor Dan Plato. He adds that street art can bring growth and value to a community, as seen around the world. “I would like to see some international street artists visit Cape Town in the near future so that we can draw the attention of tourists, and then share with them the many beautiful public murals that our local artists have done in our city,” adds Plato. One such artist, renowned Mexican muralist Libre Gutierrez, has already lent his expertise to a mural adorning the Vrygrond Community Centre (“New mural adds splash of colour”, People’s Post, 7 August 2018). Adams says local artists were roped in to assist the lead artists. “In addition to the professional artists, there were a few students from Statice Heights and another student from Parklands who are part of the Art from the Heart group. They were employed to assist with the painting of those murals,” adds Adams. He says the project forms part of a bigger picture for the area. “We are already busy with the next step with the cultural plotting and planning of Athlone. “I will be speaking to the Arts and Culture Department of the City as well as the service provider who will be assisting us with the collation of information. Their process will be to speak to the communities to let them start telling our stories – what makes Athlone unique. “Let’s start talking about the cultural side of Athlone and the impact it has had on people’s lives. “Let us look at history, because there is so much history,” says Adams.
