s the universe marked World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) on Friday 1 February, learners from Ellerton Primary School visited the Colin Eglin Sea Point Library to celebrate the day.

Scores of learners from different grades took turns to visit and learn from the librarians.

Librarian Gcobani Tshangela read a book in isiXhosa to Grade 2 learners, while Waseema Sydow played a counting game with the Grade 5 learners.

WRAD is celebrated annually at various libraries across the country to encourage young children to start reading at an early age.

Katherine Moon, senior librarian at Colin Eglin, said this is a great way of introducing children to the world of reading.

“Not only does reading open up your imag-

ination, but it allows you to acquire vocabulary and knowledge too,” said Moon.

“Reading at an early age is crucial because everything in your life revolves around reading. One of the other benefits of reading is that you will learn to see other people’s opinions better.”

She said children’s vocabularies will continue to grow as they continue reading.

Moon said she is pleased with the number of children who visit the library to get books daily.“Every afternoon, we get over 30 children who come to utilise the library. We also have a friend of the library who runs a Pram Jam for toddlers and their guardians every Wednesday morning. They learn nursery rhymes, alphabets and numbers in a fun way.”

She mentioned that parents also often come to the library to get books for their children.

Ready to learn from the best A total of 49 new interns started their 12month internship with the City of Cape Town as part of the Urban Sustainability Internship Programme (USIP) for new graduates last Friday.

“The USIP is now in its 13th year and I’m elated to say that 422 interns participated in the programme to date, with 82 of them now working permanently for the City. The first of February is a big day for our new group of interns. They will be placed at different City departments where they will have access to and learn from some of the best professionals in our country. This is a once-in-alifetime opportunity and I’m urging these young graduates to make use of every minute to learn and to gain experience,” says Mayco member for corporate services, Sharon Cottle.

The City is funding the interns’ stipends, capacity-building training programme, recruitment and induction. The majority of the interns will be placed within the scarce skills categories such as economics, engineering, environment, heritage, renewable energy, urban design, landscaping, planning, surveying and architecture.“It’s important to promote the scarce skills study fields to young people as these skills are in

Finding employment is a challenge in the current economic climate and gaining experience in scarce skills will make it significantly easier for them. Each intern is placed with a specific manager who manages, mentors, guides and assists them.“The interns may be highly qualified in a specific field, but are typically fresh out of university and often lack practical

workplace skills and experience. The interns are assigned specific tasks to ensure job-related training and we have, over the past 13 years, built up an excellent reputation. In fact, companies and organisations consistently confirm how impressed they are with those interns who have completed the internship programme with us,” she says.

Interns are recruited through advertisements on the City’s website and in newspapers, as well as at universities. The City receives on average between 2 000 and 4 000 applications each year. An initial assessment

is undertaken to select the top 200 potential candidates for interviews, and the successful candidates are then offered an internship with the City.“Almost 70% of those who complete their internships find employment afterwards, with about 20% being permanently placed at the City. These figures are testimony of the quality of our internship programme. Most of us remember our very first job, and sometimes our first day working for our own salary. We remember the pride and independence, and immense freedom that comes with being able to earn your own way.

The internship provides learners with a quality work experience where they have access to some of the best professionals in this country. The skill set that they develop during this period is a solid foundation for their future careers,” says Cottle.

“I mentioned the importance of on-the-job training at this function, and said that we need more sponsorships from corporates and for other organisations to partner with us to keep this programme going. I’m looking forward to hearing from the private sector – send me an email, or phone me. We need you to partner with us and to invest in the future of Cape Town’s young graduates,” she says.

rom drawings in a workshop to grand creations on the fan walk, the Cape Town Carnival is an event to look forward to this March.

This year the theme “Vuka Ukhanye:

Arise and Shine!” was the result of brainstorming sessions between participating groups, organisers and artists from more than 50 neighbourhoods across Cape Town, the organisers of the event say.

“Vuka Ukhanye: Arise and Shine!” was the bold statement that culminated from these creative and fun workshops.

The 2019 theme incorporates everything that the Carnival family feels truly depicts “Vuka Ukhanye: Arise and Shine!”

Cape Town Carnival creative director Brad Baard says: “The parade is a vivid journey of awakening, from sunrise and literally waking up in the morning, to symbolically waking up your own power.”

This year, some of the community organisations involved in bringing the Carnival to life are the Heideveld Theatre Company, Likhwezi Arts Project based in Khayelitsha, and Project Playground based in Langa.

The Cape Town Carnival, held annually in March, is a year-long programme culminating in a street parade that showcases and celebrates the diversity of Cape Town and South Africa.

For several hours on a late-summer evening, more than 50 energetic and talented community performance groups, spectacular floats, giant puppets and extravagant costumes bring the Green Point Fan Walk alive, while thousands of spectators from all over the world converge along the 1.2km parade route.

This year, the Green Point Fan Walk will come alive with colour and splendour on Saturday 16 March.

This is a free event that attracts thousands of spectators who celebrate the culture, diversity and creativity of the city, encouraging social cohesion.

Village Care Centre is a registered non-profit organisation that runs several programmes for school drop-outs who will often be found in the streets and they also have aftercare programmes. The centre also runs an old age home. Officials from the Centre say they are really grateful for the donation as it will go a long way in filling the tummies of the people who come through their doors and those at their old age home. outh Africa’s much-loved private school, Curro, has opened its doors in the Foreshore.

On Monday 14 January, Curro Foreshore welcomed its first batch of excited fresh-from-primary-school Grade 8 learners.

The school is one of Curro’s tech-driven schools which sees learners using technological devices for their studies.

Although Curro’s policy does not allow staff to reveal the number of learners they have, Paul said they have exceeded the target of enrolments they set.

The role of the school is to prepare children for the world of work post university.

“By the time they get out of university, technology would have changed tremendously and as a country, we need to be ready for those changes. What we are trying to make sure is that with what we have at the moment, we are able to expose that to the learners,” he added.

The learners work on touch-screen devices that serve as laptops.

This is done so that they can understand the interface of using the computer to do assignments.

The learners are also taught Robotics and how to use Microsoft Office Suite, among others things.

The number of the children in a class is kept to a minimum, which allows them to get individual attention.

Grade 12 learners from Trafalgar Secondary School in Zonnebloem and Vista High School in Schotsche Kloof had the privilege of attending a career expo organised by the Central Police Station on Wednesday 30 January.

The expo was aimed at educating the learners about possible careers they can follow within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Captain Thembi Gwe of the provincial youth desk at the police said the expo was part of the back-to-school campaigns held annually.

“School learners usually have the idea that the SAPS is only about working at police stations and there is nothing else to it.

There is more to it – a lot more opportunities are available within the SAPS,” she said.

She said the learners showed interest in the expo, which proves that they did not know there was more to the service than being a police officer.

She also mentioned that not a lot of young people enter the police force because salaries are assumed to be low, but that different levels within the force have different

salaries.

“Just like any other career, the higher you go the higher you earn. Everybody starts somewhere and you just have to continue studying within the SAPS so that you can get promoted.”

Zackeer Menya, a Grade 12 learner at Vista High School, said he learnt a lot from the expo.

“I am happy that I came here – there is so much I did not know. If my first career choice does not go well, I will definitely consider joining the police force,” he said.

Trafalgar Secondary’s Life Orientation (LO) head of department, Roeshana Hendricks, said it was good that the expo was held so early in the year.

“Normally at this time of the year, learners do not know which career to take.

[So] I hope that this will open their minds to start thinking about what career to pursue,” she said.

Abaasia Karriem, LO teacher at Vista High, said the expo was informative and helped a lot of learners who did not know about certain careers one can follow through the police force.

“I am proud of how responsive they were in the information they were being given. It shows that they take their future seriously.”

Comment on licence fees T

he Provincial Government Gazette has published the draft regulation pertaining to motor vehicle licence (MVL) fee increases in the province. The draft regulation is open for public comment until Friday 8 February.

It has been published to allow the more than two million vehicle owners in the Western Cape an opportunity to submit their comments.

This year, the proposed fee increases amount to an average 3% for the Western Cape, a figure well below inflation.

The Western Cape Provincial Government relies on vehicle licence fees to: . build, upgrade and maintain the provincially owned road network. . assist municipalities to fund the maintenance of their more strategic roads. . continue to reduce the maintenance backlog, which has been decreased by over 16% over the last seven years.

According to the government these fees, along with budgetary allocations, help keep the province’s roads in a good condition.

During the 2017/18 financial year 94.8% of vehicle kilometres travelled on surfaced roads were travelled on roads in fair or very good condition. In the same period 63 080m2 of surfaced roads were upgraded, 915 772m2 of surfaced roads were rehabilitated, 45 997km of gravel roads were bladed and 22km of gravel roads were upgraded to surfaced roads. This is in addition to the construction or upgrading of six bridges and 76 culverts. Roads are an asset with an approximate value of R68bn and they are consumed, over time, by the close to two million vehicle owners in the Western Cape and other users A total of 7019km of provincial roads are in a fair to very good condition, says the provincial government.

The draft regulation has been published in the Provincial Gazette Extraordinary 8027 dated Wednesday 9 January for public comment.

Temporary road closures for Sona Temporary road closures for the State of the Nation Address (Sona) and the opening of Parliament will be in effect on Thursday 7 February.

There will also be limited road closures for rehearsals today (5 February) and tomorrow (6 February).

Most of the road closures in the CBD on Thursday will be from 06:00 until midnight.

This will affect the normal flow of traffic in and around the city bowl, Newlands, the M3 and N2 city-bound lanes. Road users are asked to plan their routes accordingly.

The City also alerted road users to the closure of the M3 and N2 at 17:45 on Thursday. The M5 will be the best option as an alternative route.

Take note of parking restrictions in the city from midnight tomorrow (Wednesday) until Thursday at 23:45.

Local to showcase her work at the art fair SAMANTHA LEE @Samantha_Lee121 Pinelands based artist Zyma Amien (56) will be one of the local artists in the spotlight in the 2019 Tomorrows/Today section at the upcoming Investec Cape Town Art Fair.

The special section is dedicated to shining the spotlight on emerging and under-represented artists from around the globe.

“I come from a lineage of making. My family made everything, from wedding dresses, dresses, headpieces, bridal rooms, even building houses.

“My mother was a seamstress and my father a carpenter, so I suppose making is in my blood.

“I have always been making, but I did not think of it as art. Only when I started studying art, did I understand that a concept is the idea and then to make it visual, one must make the idea. Therefore, I did not wake up one day and decide to do art – I probably always made art,” says Amien.

“I have been in this industry since 2008 when I started studying at Unisa until 2013 and furthered my studies at Michaelis School of Fine Art to finish a Master’s in 2015.

“That was the start of my art career. I was not allowed to study at UCT (University of Cape Town) in the 1980s.”

Amien completed her Master’s (cum laude) at UCT after graduating from Unisa with a Bachelor of Visual Arts.

Amien was born in Lansdowne and grew up in Athlone. She also lived in Kensington before moving to Pinelands.

“My inspiration comes from looking at my environment as well as current, contemporary sociopolitical issues. My work is concept based. So, I research Zyma Amien. my idea and then find ways of showing the idea by making art. It can be installation, drawings or paintings,” says Amien.

Her practice covers printmaking, drawing, installation and digital video, and is often concerned with socio-political issues of the garment and textile industries, which, until recently, have been central to the industrial landscape of the city.

It is informed by her heritage stemming from her lineage of women who worked in

this industry for several generations.

“My link to the industry stems from my generation of seamstresses. I listened to my mother talk about the challenges of the industry, I watched her work behind the machine and then I started my research.

“My main concern is the exploitation and alienation that the workers endure.

Today the industry faces new challenges as the fourth industrial revolution promises to affect manufacturing. The research shows that this is not just a local problem, but a global one,” says Amien.

Currently Amien is a lecturer at Unisa as well as a part-time assistant lecturer at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at UCT. She works full time as an artist.

“I do art full time. There is so much learning that an artist needs to do,” she says.

This will be her first time as part of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair.

“I am very nervous but excited to be part of the fair. I am indebted to Art First’s Clare Cooper and Olga Speakes for granting me this opportunity,” she says.

Amien won the PPC Re-image Concrete competition in 2012 and in 2016 she won the Sasol New Signature competition.

“I would encourage young people to consider art as a career because art is a very powerful career.

“It challenges you to think about things from different angles.

“You have to set your own pace, learn new things every day, be informed about the world, the latest news, be willing to take criticism, be strong... and the list goes on, yet it is a very rewarding career.

“Often the trajectory of professionals is in one straight line, but the creative artists have multiple trajectories. The job of an artist is to comment on the wrongs in society and then make it visual,” says Amien.

This year a record number of galleries from around the world are taking part in the fair, making it the largest art fair on the African continent to date and going forward – an important milestone and attraction for South Africa.

The seventh edition of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 February.

group of urban farmers will benefit from a R2.6m funding boost through a partnership with a local initiative.

Last week, the City of Cape Town announced the funding as part of a memorandum of agreement, signed between the City and the Philippi Economic Development Initiative (PEDI), that will see the growth of the project following the approval of the funding.

Grant Twigg, Mayco member for urban management, says farmers were selected through the Western Cape department of Agriculture and the City of Cape Town. “[Together, the entities] have trained home garden and urban farmers over the past years. However, there was never a standard set for these farmers to operate their farms by, or a quality standard of the crops they would potentially send to market.

PEDI has firstly ensured its compliance to Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) organic growing standards and now will cross train 22 farmers to the same standards in the next 12 months,” says Twigg.

“There is no scientific selection process at present, however, there is an objective of establishing a market place for home gardeners and urban farmers to bring their produce and collectively sell to commercial markets.”

Conditions will be used to include farmers in the training programmes: PEDI, via the Department will have access to the database of the farmers who have been previously trained, farmers who are willing to accept the PGS organic growers standards which ensures production and crop quality for commercial markets, farmers who will grow and send their produce to the Philippi Urban Agriculture Academy (PUAA) Agri-hub for processing and selling

to commercial markets, these farmers will also have access to the FreshMark Systems to coordinate growing plans and crop availability reporting in order to satisfy client orders. The farmers will be selected from various areas around the Cape Metropole at first in order for the PUAA Agri-Hub to perfect it’s processes before expanding its farmer supplier base in the second year.

The farmers were selected from the Philippi Horticulture Area, Philippi, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Mitchell’s Plain, Khayelitsha and Mfuleni and the Bo-Kaap “The reason for this spread is to ensure the Agri-Hub works with farmers of various growing conditions, crop quality and logistical constraints. These criteria are some of the reasons current home gardeners and urban farmers are unable to bring produce to market,” says Twigg.

“The training academy was launched two years ago with the first phase aimed at establishing the methodologies for producing organic crops in tunnels and open fields.

The academy also established a seedling growing tunnel which can grow as much as 130 000 organic seedlings at any one time.

This facility is one of only a few organic seedling producers in the Cape Metropole and certainly the only in the Philippi area,” says Mayco member for economic opportunities and asset management, James Vos. The proposal for the inception came from PEDI initially as the Philippi Urban Food Security (PUFS) programme.

This was to be a joint venture between PEDI and other partners that fell through.

PEDI initially used its own funding to start the academy, with valuable contributions from the City’s Economic Development Department when the value of the project was recognised, says Twigg.

“The intention was always to accommodate the academy using the vacant land at the Philippi Fresh Produce Market. The City owns the land and always been involved, both directly and indirectly, in the establishment of the academy,” says Twigg.

“Urban Agriculture is core to food security in the city. Promoting urban agriculture addresses this problem head on.

“Unemployment is another clear problem, particularly for the youth. Growing the capacity for emerging Philippi. farmers will create

enormous potential for new business development and employment to assist in alleviating the poverty stemming from unemployment.”

PEDI’s vision and mandate is to facilitate economic development through strategic social and economic investment.

Urban Agriculture is a key industrial sector in Philippi. Due to the existing historical role agriculture plays in the area, PEDI has always promoted growing the urban agricultural activity for the previously disadvantaged community members of Philippi.

PEDI was established in 1998 as a Section 21 Company (NPO) by the City of Cape Town in partnership with the Western Cape Provincial Government, businesses and the community.

From the outset, its primary aim was to promote economic growth and development in the Philippi Industrial area. The academy also plans to take in a graduate intern for a year to hone their academic skills at the academy. Additionally, three employment opportunities will be created for unemployed matriculants from the Philippi area and surrounds for those who intend to pursue studies in agriculture.

“The value of urban agriculture cannot be overstated and can be seen as an important sector in the local economy that helps to ensure food security, stimulate economic growth, and address unemployment,” says Vos. The academy currently operates at the Philippi Fresh Produce Market on Stock Road, Philippi, where 13 local residents are employed under the supervision of farm manager, Zodidi Meke.

Meke was an unemployed graduate who excelled at the academy, and has already been acknowledged with a farmer’s award by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture at their ‘Women in Agriculture’ awards last year.

he 2019 motorsport season at Killarney International Raceway starts with a high-octane big-bore rumble at Passion for Speed sponsored by G-Energy on Saturday 9 February.

“Rumble” being the operative word, with races featuring classes for monster V8-engined cars both classic and modern in the Pre-68 Legends and V8 Masters categories.

You’ll also see (and more importantly, hear) screaming Ferraris, howling Lamborghinis and snarling Porsches battling it out for line honours in the G & H Extreme Supercar races.This exotic national racing series is open to GT supercars and high-performance sedans, led by a mix of GT3 sports racing cars

and locally built GT racers.

Not all the entries are in yet but the pace setter in these races is expected to be Stradale Motorsport team principal Charl Arangies from Vereeniging in Gauteng, who will be bringing either his Aston Martin Vantage GT3 V12 or his Lamborghini Gallardo GT3. Either way, he will start as favourite, with entries expected from Simola Hillclimb hero Franco Scribante in his Porsche 997 Turbo to mention a few.

The Pre-66 Production Cars and Little Giants races will feature monster V8s such as Ford Fairlanes and Mustangs, big Chevrolet sedans, hot Corvettes and more from the golden age before fuel restrictions, mixing

it with smaller and more nimble sports cars from the same period. Entries are expected from all over South Africa, as well as from Britain, Holland and Scandinavia for these international classic races.

A big field is expected for the Pre-1980 Classic and Invitation cars, practically guaranteeing close racing. Topping the entry list are Robin Forbes’ thundering 5.7-litre Corvette Stingray and the Ford Sapphire V6 of Steve Hallet, who have already confirmed their participation. They’ll have to put foot, however, to stay with Franco Donadio’s indecently quick Cosworth-engined Ford Escort Mk1, which is expected to set the pace.

A surprise new entry in this category is

the Ford Escort Mk1 of Willie Ras, also with 16-valve Cosworth power and nicknamed “Witblitz”, which is expected to be driven at this event by motorsport legend Sarel van der Merwe. If anybody can give Donadio and Forbes a hard time, it’s Supervan. Expect fireworks.

The 45-minute South African Tourist Trophy race will be the second and final leg of this series for classic sports and GT cars, which has also attracted a number of international entries. In addition, there will be races for Historic single-seaters (including Formula One cars from the 1960s) as well as the Mikes Place Clubmans series – regional racing at its very best.

near-capacity crowd flocked to Cape Town Stadium on Sunday 3 February to witness the first pre-season Super Rugby double-header.

The event, dubbed “Superhero Sunday”, signified the unique partnership between SA Rugby and Marvel, putting South African rugby in esteemed company.

Marvel has previously partnered with other sport codes, but this is the first such arrangement with a rugby union in Africa.

Each Super Rugby franchise was paired with a Marvel superhero, namely Thor (Stormers), Spider-Man (Lions), Black Panther (Sharks) and Captain America (Bulls).

It won’t be the last time the teams don these special jerseys – they will wear them exclusively in most SA derbies. This collaboration echoes previous Marvel partnerships like the recent Australian Open and the National Rugby League where fans arrived daily dressed in the gear of popular Marvel characters to support their favourites.In the day’s finale, the Stormers scored five tries in a thrilling 33-28 win against the Bulls.The Stormers made an encouraging start and dominated territory and possession early on, but the opening try came from the defence as a big hit shook the ball loose for Scarra Ntubeni to pounce on.

The hooker raced away before finding flyer Seabelo Senatla, who finished with ease.

Flank Jaco Coetzee broke free soon after and surged into the 22 where he gave the ball to scrumhalf Jano Vermaak who was brought down. Flyhalf Josh Stander hit the ball at pace on a great angle to go over for the second try.

The score went out to 21-0 when wing SP Marais intercepted and raced away, skipping out of the last tackle just short of the tryline and then thumping the conversion over as well.The Bulls responded with tries from flyhalf Handre Pollard and Ivan van Zyl to bring themselves within seven points.The Stormers made it four tries in the first half when No. 8 Juarno Augustus charged down and collected to score and although the Bulls had the final say in the first half with a try from fullback Warrick Gelant, the Stormers took a 26-21 advantage into the half-time break.The Bulls took the lead for the first time in the game just after half-time with a try from close range from flank Paul Schoeman which was converted by replacement Manie Libbok to put them 28-26 ahead.Both teams were impressive on defence in the second half, scrambling and holding out the waves of attacks.The Stormers put together a period of sustained pressure and they eventually found a way through as lock Chris van Zyl went over with just five minutes left to seal the 33-28 win.
