Profits climb at CTICC NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain

T

he 2017/2018 financial year has not only brought the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) to its 15th birthday, but has also recorded recordbreaking revenues and impressive operating profits.

This was announced as part of the CTICC’s 2017/18 annual financial results, presented

by CEO Julie-May Ellingson last week.

Over the last 15 years, the CTICC has welcomed over eight million people to the venue – close to double the population of Cape Town, Ellingson said.

During this time, the CTICC contributed

R41bn to the country’s GDP and around R35bn to the Western Cape’s Gross Geographic Product (GGP).

The CTICC has also created around 115 000 jobs over the 15-year period, Ellingson said.

But the CTICC hasn’t been resting on its laurels, with this year bringing in its own set of impressive numbers.

During the past financial year, the CTICC made a R4.5bn contribution to the GDP, and a R3.1bn contribution to the GGP. The centre also posted a growth rate well above the international average for convention centres around the world.

According to the Association of International Convention Centres (AIPC), the 2017 average growth rate for centres around the

world was 9%, Ellingson said.

“The CTICC exceeded this by growing their revenue by over 14%. This was also double the AIPC’s forecasted growth rate of 7% for 2018 and reaffirms the CTICC’s position as one of the world’s leading international convention centres.

“In 2017/18 our revenue increased by 14.2% from R215.6m to R246.3m, while Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) also rose well above our target of R24.3m to R57.2m. These results are particularly pleasing in the current economic climate,” said Ellingson.

The centre hosted a total of 525 events during the period under review and made a net contribution to foreign exchange earnings

of R681m.

Western Cape MEC for economic opportunities, Beverley Schäfer, applauded the CTICC in a statement. “The investment in the CTICC’s expansion is already starting to pay off, as the centre secures more and bigger conferences, highlighting the important role of infrastructure-led economic growth in our province. The CTICC is jointly owned by the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape Government and the business sector, and its development and expansion is an important economic catalyst in the province.

“The business tourism sector is an important niche market for the development and growth of tourism in our province.

I

t’s been a year since one of the Two Oceans Aquarium’s best-loved ambassadors set off on the journey of her life, giving researchers at the aquarium unique insight at the same time.

Just over a year ago, loggerhead turtle Yoshi was released off the coast of Hout Bay, and a tracker attached to her shell has been transmitting her location to aquarium staff (“Fond farewell for famous turtle”, People’s Post, 19 December).

Yoshi came to the aquarium 20 years ago, when she was found by a Japanese long-liner. The crew had kept the injured turtle in a small tank and she had become used to human interaction by the time they docked in Cape Town and the crew called the aquarium, says Musson. The crew also named her after their cook – Yoshitari – and the name stuck.

The young turtle, only the size of a dinner plate when she came to the aquarium, was initially very inquisitive and many a staff member came off second best to a nip from her. The staff trained her to feed with a target and she went on to grow into “the queen

of the tank”, weighing in at 183kg.

Yoshi’s release has been a special case – very few turtles kept in captivity for as long as her have been released, Maryke Musson, Two Oceans Aquarium curator, previously told People’s Post. The closest case is the release of a turtle kept in captivity for 10 years.

“This has been such an incredible journey and what we have learnt over the last year is that sea turtles that have been under rehab or in captivity can absolutely adapt to life back in the ocean – even after 20 years in a captive environment,” Musson says.

“They certainly retain their natural ability to navigate and to find food. What we have also experienced is the power of an animal ambassador and that people are really interested in these amazing ocean conservation stories.

Yoshi’s release offered us such a great opportunity to continue sharing our conservation messages. The interest in her journey has been absolutely phenomenal. Yoshi’s journey also contributes to validating our turtle rehabilitation efforts and work, giving us the confidence to continue saving turtles because it does make a difference.”

Yoshi has spent the last year travelling 8600 kilometres along the western coast, swimming as far as Angola, and is currently about

680 kilometres west of Hondeklipbaai on the South African West Coast. She has kept a steady pace of 24km per day since her release, and she still prefers swimming against the currents and wind, according to an update on the aquarium’s website.

The closest loggerhead nesting sites are about 3500km from Yoshi’s current location, on the KwaZulu-Natal northern coast.

Loggerhead females nest on or near the beaches where they hatched from, so staff at the aquarium are hoping that Yoshi will show them where she started out her life before her satellite tag stops transmitting.

that could transmit for up to three years. To date we have received more than 9000 messages from about 1900 satellite passes, so this tag has been working rather hard. The tags on the two previous tagged turtles transmitted for 14 months before the battery packs ran down, and we are hoping that Yoshi’s tag, being a newer model, would last longer than that. We are just glad that we have been able to follow her adventure for the last 12 months. She is really doing well,” adds Musso­n.

However, Musson cautions that Yoshi’s adventures might see her travelling further before she heads to the beach on which she was born. “Yoshi has reached maturity but might very well travel around for a few years before breeding.

“We also still have no idea where she was originally from as she arrived at the aquarium on a fishing vessel­.

“If she originally hatched out on our KwaZulu-Natal coast, then she could very well reach that area in about seven to eight months, but if she is from breeding areas around Oman or Japan, it will take quite a bit longer,” Musson says.

To date, the CTICC has hosted 589 international events in the past 15 years. Another 64 international events have been booked to 2024.

In an effort to host sustainable events, the CTICC is currently testing its own reverse osmosis plant, which will draw on underground seawater (“Filtering for water-wise functions”, People’s Post, 27 November).

It is expected that around 200 000F can be produced by the plant in any 24-hour cycle, and additional storage tanks with a capacity of 400 000F will allow the centre to cater for all poten-

tial maximum demand scenarios­.

The CTICC carefully monitors its water consumption “With CTICC 2 opened, we have started measuring both our buildings and have calculated that a combined water usage for CTICC 1 and CTICC 2 stands at 125 000F per day,” said CTICC spokesperson Nadine Christians­.

This, among other initiatives aimed at decreasing water usage, has seen a reduction in water consumption of 30.4%.

The CTICC also continued to create jobs, with an 9% increase on the previous year, seeing over 8500 jobs created.

“In an economy that is shedding jobs, this is something we are particularly proud of,” said Ellingson.

afety measures, to help ensure that both locals and visitors have peace of mind while in the CBD during the festive season have been put into effect by the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID).

The festive season is a time when the CCID’s Safety and Security Department intensifies its efforts due to the added influx of visitors into the Central City, the CCID says in a statement.

In line with this, the department has launched its 2018/19 crime prevention and public awareness “Stash it, don’t flash it” campaign.

Safety and Security manager Muneeb Hendricks says: “Our plan is to ensure that

both local and visiting holidaymakers stay safe in the CBD are all in place. Our main focus for the CBD is to reduce the opportunity to commit crime in the first place. The Central City is a popular venue for partygoers and others looking for entertainment and, during the festive season, even more people come to the CBD to enjoy themselves.

“Unfortunately, as in any busy downtown, crafty criminals also look for and find opportunities as people are in holiday mode, enjoying their ‘down time’, and may not be as vigilant as they normally would. This is exactly what the ‘Stash it, don’t flash it’ campaign seeks to address – educating members of the public on how not to become victims of crimes.”

Elements of the campaign include a display of street-pole posters reminding people to be aware of theft out of vehicles, pickpocketing and ATM fraud.

Flyers containing top personal safety tips as well as brochures with more detailed information are also distributed by CCID-branded teams in areas that are prone to these types of crime.

A newly introduced element of the campaign is the “Find Me” concept – an initiative aimed at encouraging members of the public to familiarise themselves with the CCID public safety officers (PSOs), who work around

the clock throughout the CCID footprint.

Hendricks explains: “Easily identifiable in their black uniforms with bright green CCID-branded bibs and caps, we encourage anyone needing assistance to ‘find’ one of our officers as they are the most visible presence of the CCID in the Cape Town Central City. These PSOs are on the streets to keep you safe – make sure to find them.”

This year’s campaign and festive season safety plans will focus on theft out of vehicles, pickpocketing and ATM fraud.

Hendricks elaborates: “These are the three most prominent types of crime that we are targeting once again through our campaign and festive season safety plans with our Law Enforcement partners within the City of Cape Town and the South African Police Service.”

In addition, throughout the four-month festive season (from December to March), the department will deploy an additional festive season team of 15 PSOs to add to the 270 PSOs deployed 24/7, 365 days a year on a rotational shift basis.

The additional 15 PSOs will be brought in from 16 December to 16 March 2019 to cover the increase in night-time entertainment associated with the festive season in general, as well as major events happening in the CBD at this time of year.

A day full of colour ahead T

he third Open Streets Day in the 2018/19 series will see Bree Street become a shared space in January.

The half-day event will take place on Sunday 27 January, and will be a day “full of colour, activity and self-propelled mobility”, Open Streets Cape Town says in a stateme­nt.

Building on the success of previous years and thanks to the financial support of the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI), Open Streets Cape Town is partnering with the City of Cape Town and the Central City Improvement District (CCID) to demonstrate to all residents across the city what a car-free, people-first CBD could be.

“Open Streets offers a great opportunity for Cape Town’s residents to be active participants in experiencing the unifying potential of their community. At a recent Open Streets event I was happy to see the community come out, engage one another and experience an inclusive, safe and welcoming space. I look forward to seeing other communities enjoy this fun and thoughtprovoking experience,” says mayor Dan Plato.

By closing down a portion of Bree Street to traffic, it will be transformed into an inclusive and neutral space for all to enjoy, the statement reads.

“Although some might consider it just a party or a festival, we hope they will also become aware of joining the ‘movement for better movement’. This includes taking the opportunity to leave their cars at home and test a different mode of transport for getting to Open Streets,” the statement reads.

The aim of Open Streets is to radically increase the use and ownership of streets as public space and, with that in mind, this summer the Open Streets Days series has returned to the five areas where the programme has taken root: Woodstock, Bellville, City Centre, Langa and Mitchell’s Plain.

Open Streets Cape Town co-founder and managing director Marcela Guerrero Casas says: “The invitation to residents is to use the Open Streets platform to reimagine these different parts of the city. Closed to motorised vehicles and open to people, roads become spaces for walkers, cyclists, skaters and wheelchair users to move safely, and for showcasing of local music, dance and community-based initiatives. These days bring people together and inspire action. We believe this kind of experiential learning could lead to real behaviour change and increased advocacy for non-motorised transport.”

Tasso Evangelinos, CCID CEO, adds: “For Cape Town to become a safe and inclusive city, we must catch up with the global trend that calls for fewer motorised vehicles and more infrastructure that is safe and welcoming to pedestrians. It has been proven in other places and in our experience in the CBD for years that businesses benefit from this type of activation.”

The street will be closed to motorised transport from 09:00 to 14:00.

Summer market entertains F

ollowing on from previous years, the Cape Town Summer Market will once again cater for visitors of all ages.

The market offers a range of fun activities that will keep young and old entertained.

The Cape Town Summer Market will take place from Wednesday 19 to Sunday 23 December in the Company’s Garden and will be open to the public from 18:00 to 23:00 daily.

Purchase condemned the “horrific” incident.

“I am extremely concerned and shocked about the senseless and cowardly petrol bomb attack on one of our MyCiTi buses in Woodstock (on Monday night) which left the bus driver and a passenger injured,” she said in a statement.

She confirmed that both the driver and the passenger were hospitalised and she conveyed her condolences and wished them a speedy recovery.

According to Purchase, one of the attackers posed as a passenger.

“He was waiting at the Lawley stop in Roodebloem Road in Woodstock when he boarded the bus at around 21:45. Once inside the bus, he

“All-in-all five MyCiTi buses have been burnt out in petrol bomb attacks since 15 October to date, and another four buses have been damaged in similar foiled attempts,” said the City of Cape Town’s Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase.

Purchase said losses associated with the attacks amount to approximately R22m and all the cases are under police investigation.

The incident took place in Roodebloem Road at about 21:30 on Monday night when two men stopped the bus travelling towards Cape Town, according to Woodstock police spokesperson, Sergeant Hilton Malila.

“It has been alleged that two men stopped the bus on the corner of Lawley and Roodebloem and after the driver stopped they just started to spray the bus with petrol and set it alight,” Malila said in a statement last week.

He said there was only one passenger inside the bus, along with the driver. “The passenger man-

Know the new rates SANParks announced that Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) will be charging differential tariffs as of Thursday 1 November at all its entry gates.

This announcement was made last year in November. These entry gates include Cape Point, Boulders, Silvermine, Tokai and the picnic sites. A year’s notice was afforded to allow the public and commercial business the opportunity to prepare for the rates change.

All the other 19 national parks have been charging differential tariffs since 2005 and Table Mountain National Park has moved to follow suit.

As of 1 November 2018 the park has three rates for entry at the gates: . The standard rate which is what foreign visitors will pay. No documentation is required to be submitted at the gate upon entry on this rate . The SADC rate afforded to those visitors who can prove they are SADC nationals by producing their original passport on arrival at the gate. This requirement is in place for every adult who enters the park on this rate and not just the driver of the vehicle. . The local rate which South African residents will be charged if they can prove they

To claim the SA rate on arrival, the accepted documentation is one of the following: SA ID book, SA ID card, SA driver’s licence, SA passport, proof of permanent residency or valid visa (work, spousal, volunteer, retirement, study).

Every adult in the vehicle who wishes to claim the South African rate on entry must provide proof they are South Africans. It is not sufficient that the driver of the vehicle can prove they are South Africans.

Proof of your local address is regrettably not accepted. It needs to be an official document as listed above.

Children under 18 do not need to supply proof of South African identification when entering with an adult South African, provided the adult qualifies for the SA rate on the date of entry.

Refunds will not be offered for those who pay the standard tariff on entry and then post-departure submit proof of South African identification.

All children over the age of 12 are billed as adults, a policy that applied across all national park gates.

R3m upgrade of the Sea Point Civic Centre is currently underway.

The work includes the replacement of the vinyl wallpaper in the interior of the hall; treatment of the timber flooring; improvements to the roofing and certain portions of ceiling surfaces, including bird-proofing; rehabilitation of the ablution blocks; and several minor sundry works to revitalise the facility, explains ward councillor Dave Bryant.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of June next year, in line with the City of Cape Town’s financial year.

The facility is currently considered a construction site and remains unavailable for use until completion of the works,

The upgrade was approved after an assessment of various hall facilities by the City.

“The condition of the Sea Point hall was deemed as ‘critical’’ and was subsequently scheduled for repairs,” explains Bryant­.

The works currently being carried out at the facility are categorised as repair and maintenance works, he says.

“Given the nature of the facility, however, it presented an opportune moment to ensure as much of the generally inaccessible areas of the hall are included as part of the scope of works to maximise impact. The upgrades will improve the overall condition of the facility, after which it will again become available for use for events and other activities.”

Arise and shine at annual carnival T

he Cape Town Carnival is preparing to shine, as it gears up for the festival next year.

The theme for the 2019 carnival, “Vuka Ukhanye: Arise and Shine!”, was the result of brainstorming sessions between participating groups, organisers and artists from more than 50 neighbourhoods across Cape Town.

“We’re a family at the Cape Town Carnival, and we work together as much as possible in the creative processes that lead up to the annual event that takes place on 16 March next year,” says Brad Baard, creative director of the Cape Town Carnival.

“The parade is a vivid journey of awakening, from sunrise and literally waking up in

the morning, to symbolically waking up your own power.”

The parade journey begins with the blooming and blossoming of sunflowers turning towards the light, brought to life by the costume department through African-inspired headwear and skirts. These are a handful of the 3500 costume items the small but very hardworking department makes each year, many of them created by repurposing and recycling materials.

“Every year we look forward to having a new theme to challenge us and push our creative boundaries,” says costume supervisor Michael Bagapi.

Dance is an integral part of the parade, with participants spending countless hours choreographing, learning and prac-

tising their routines.

“I’m always inspired by the enthusiasm of the local groups and blown away by their interpretation of the theme through dance,” says carnival choreographer Mbovu Malinga.

Malinga, who has been part of the Carnival family since 2015, ensures that all choreography gives group members the opportunity to shine and show what they’re capable of while also giving them ownership and a voice in the process.

Among the fabulous floats lining up to make an appearance in the “Vuka Ukhanye: Arise and Shine!” parade next year are “Wakey Wakey”, “The Mad Machine”, “Social Activism” and “Shine Your Light”.

Baard explains that this last float, the culmi-

nation of the parade, represents the unleashing of personal and collective power and potential “in a surge of light rays and intricate patterns, creating a magnificent mandala for spectators, flanked by people wearing impressive matching outfits”.

Every participant in the annual spectacular takes away life-changing personal insights.

Nonkoliseko Somagu, a dancer who joined the Carnival family five years ago after a successful lead performer audition, says: “I’ve learnt the importance of giving a memorable experience to the audience by tuning into the lead performer’s character and using bodily moves, props and costumes to tell a story and paint a picture that can captivate the minds of our audience.”

Be money wise this season Don’t let fraudsters steal Christmas.

It’s the festive season and for most of us that means holidays, family, fun and for some, the added joy of a Christmas bonus.

For scammers it’s an opportunity to steal money from people while they’re relaxed and less vigilant.

Kalyani Pillay, CEO of the SA Banking and Risk Information Centre, says: “Criminals are masters of social engineering and know just how to exploit human vulnerabilities to perpetuate crimes, particularly over the festive season, when victims tend to let their guard down.”

You may be told you’ve won a Christmas lottery because you bought something from a retailer or online shop, or you’re entitled to a year-end lump sum payment from a financial services provider. All you need to do to receive the money is pay a deposit to cover administration or other costs. Often there’s a deadline to pressure you to respond quickly.

Other variations during the season of goodwill might include being asked to donate to charity or provide a loan to a friend or distant relative.

Alet Griesel, chief risk officer at DirectAxis, says that most scams fall into two categories: those that try to get your money directly such as the lucky windfall or appeal for help, and those that attempt to get your personal or banking details. The criminals impersonate you or raid your bank account at their leisure. “Technology such as the internet and cellphones have made banking, making payments, shopping and other financial transactions much easier, but have also provided more opportunities for criminals, both in terms

of the scams they devise and the number of people they can reach,” she says.

So-called phishing scams typically use email, SMSs or social media to try and obtain your banking or personal information. Common bank scams are when the fraudsters send a message that appears to come from your bank or other reputable organisation and asks you to respond or click on a link and provide details such as your Pin code or other information to confirm a payment into your account.

Depending on the information they’re able to obtain, criminals then either clean out your account or pretend to be you and apply for loans or open retail accounts.

Griesel warns that if you’re complacent about being scammed or think you’re too clever or sophisticated to fall for a scam, you’re a good target for cybercriminals.

You might spot 99.9% of the poorly executed scams, but only need to make one error of judgement.

“Everyone is at risk, from financially savvy company directors to tech-phobic pensioners. The fraudsters identify and exploit vulnerabilities. They may pretend to be a big, new client that could ensure the company meets its budget targets for the year or a helpful bank employee trying to facilitate a pension payment.”

Some scams are so sophisticated and the phoney emails or websites so realistic that afterwards the victims are adamant that they never revealed any personal information. “If you think criminals are hiding behind a well-known brand to try and defraud you, it’s important to report it, even if you have no intention of responding to the attempted fraud,” says

Griesel.

“Most financial services companies have fraud departments and will act immediately to shut down websites, bank accounts and other mechanisms used as part of the fraud. Reporting scams is the best way to fight back. Even if you have spotted the scam, reporting it may prevent others falling victim.”

Tips for avoiding common scams include: . Be suspicious of news that you’ve suddenly won or been left a large amount of money, especially if you haven’t entered a lottery or competition or don’t know the person who’s giving you the money. If it seems too good to be true, it is. . Don’t provide your banking or card information to anyone. Your bank will never contact you requesting your Pin number or a one-time password. . Don’t give personal or financial information to anyone who contacts you and who you don’t know. Sometimes scammers pretend to be from government agencies asking you to update personal information. . Don’t click on hyperlinks in an email, particularly one from an unknown sender. If you want to transact online, type the bank or company name into your browser. . Only shop online on reputable websites. . Don’t download software from pop-up windows. . Install anti-virus software and update it regularly. . Frequently check your credit rating.

s the year draws to a close People’s Post looks back at some of the memorable sporting moments. This has certainly been another action-packed sporting year at local and international level.

However, many local sporting codes took

a break or had their seasons curtailed by the drought which gripped the Western Cape.

Creative thinking and resilience meant certain sports could resume activity for this season, while rains have eased concerns somewhat.

Through the lens of photographer Rashied Isaacs, we are looking back at some 2018 highlights.

The u.16 Youth Cup hosted by Bayview FC may have been under a cloud of doubt for the early part of the year, but still managed to go ahead, under grey skies at the Strandfontein Sports Complex during mid-June. Here are Vasco da Gama’s Diego Hugo and Camps Bay’s Sisonke Lubowana battling for the ball in the tournament’s plate final.
