Students raise funds NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku
A
group of students from IIE’s Varsity College campus in Rondebosch raised a sum of R31 500 for the Qhubeka Education Project. This fund-raising was the college’s 2018 national CSI initiative which aims at helping one big charity organisation a year. They worked tirelessly throughout 2018, organising fund-raising events and campaigns such as the Mr and Miss Varsity College fashion show and a movie night in aid of Qhubeka Education.
Gomolemo Radebe says there were nine students involved in the fund-raising and they were all highly committed. “We did not have a set target, all we wanted was to do the best we could. We are happy with the result.” He says they hosted events and directly asked for donations within the campus and outside throughout the year. Radebe says he has been involved in charity work for a while and he finds fulfilment in knowing that he is doing every little he can to make a difference in the lives of others. With the funds they raised Radebe says Qhubeka will purchase more bicycles for
children who have to travel long distances to get to school. “I am glad we will be helping towards their education. There are children who still walk long distances and by the time they get to class they are already tired.” He encourages the youth to take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way, whether to empower themselves or others. “Initiatives like these challenge you to be a better person. You get to work with different people from different levels of life and you learn how to deal and communicate with each other. It also teaches you to hustle
for what you want. Looking at this, it was not even for our own benefit but for an educational charity, but we put a lot of effort to make sure it becomes a success,” Radebe says. Saleem Jackson, principal of the college’s Cape Town campus, says: “South Africa’s economic success is dependent on the upliftment of our poorer communities through education, skills and the empowerment of the individual. That’s why the college invested all its efforts into the brand’s national CSI in their quest to make a difference in the lives of those that are in desperate need of an opportunity to better their lives.”
