Aids awareness TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji
W
ith 1 December being World Aids Day, different organisations and health sectors had yet another opportunity to raise even more awareness around the HIV/ Aids pandemic. To spread the word and increase awareness, Where Rainbows Meet Training and Development Foundation (WRM) in Capricorn near Muizenberg, took to the streets to raise awareness among pedestrians and motorists in front of the Grassy Park Day Hospital on Mon-
day 3 December. Where Rainbows Meet project manager Kyle Luke Cupido says: “We once again took to the streets to raise awareness to pedestrians and motorists alike on the importance of condomising, abstinence and knowing your status, through our chants, distribution of condoms and speaking to people on the streets about HIV/Aids.We eventually entered the day hospital to do a short skit for the patients and hospital staff. The hospital also ran its own programme on the morning to commemorate those affected and infected by HIV/Aids. They al-
so lit a candle in memory for those who lost their lives to the deadly disease,” he says. Cupido adds that HIV/Aids is not something to be taken lightly. “Thousands of people die each year from the symptoms of Aids and don’t get to live out their full potential and there are millions living with the disease – some unaware of their status and others too ashamed to tell anyone about their status, which in turn means they do not take ARVs. Take your medication and you can live your life to the fullest. Our message was clear: Be wise, condomise.”
