The Levana Primary cadets with their trainer and teacher at the school, Tracy Jantjies
LAVENDER HILL
Drilling to the top TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji
T
he Levana Primary cadets in Lavender Hill took top spot following a Community Policing Forum cadets competition that took place at the Solo Park sports field on Wednesday 5 December. The competition was held in aid of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. Levana was one of four schools that participated in this event. Trainer of the cadets and teacher at the school, Tracy Jantjies, says the competition usually happens once a year but this was the
first time that her school took part. “Police usually hold the drilling competition. We didn’t know we were given an opportunity to participate until two weeks before the event. We had to make good use of the few days that were left before the competition. I tell you, it was difficult. Children had to be dragged out of their homes to come practise. For most children here it is difficult to get them to commit to anything but we try our best. But as they saw how others wanted to do this, a few days before the competition the excitement was visible. They didn’t have to be dragged, they pitched for practice. The learners were committed and
were always prepared to stay after school. This was a proud Levana moment. At the end of it all the Levana cadets were the overall winner and got first prize for best dressed, best behaviour, best drum major, best exhibition and best drummer. I didn’t expect them to win. They put in so much work in such a short time and that makes me very proud of them,” she says. Jantjies teaches drilling as an extramural activity and they are reaping the benefits of it. “This is not just about drilling but it teaches kids discipline, listening skills and how to follow instructions. All the skills they learn here they take to class, making them
better learners. It also helps to keep our pupils off the street.” Without a shadow of a doubt, the drilling squad at Levana Primary is in good hands. Jantjies has been drilling since the age of seven. “I enjoy it and I really hope the learners enjoy it as much as I do. Since we won the competition we have had a number of other learners wanting to join and we are really happy that we are hitting the right mark. Since I came to the school in 2016 I took over the cadets and it makes me so happy to see them master their routines. They improve daily and we hope next year we will enter even more competitions.”
