A

Wynberg resident is a living proof that one is never too old to start something new.

Molly Fabe (70) will participate in the Discovery Triathlon World Cup Cape Town’s Super Sprint duathlon on Sunday 10 February. She will be the oldest woman to participate in the overall event, and the oldest participant in her category.

In 2016, Fabe won an entry into the Discovery Triathlon World Cup Cape Town through Women’s Health magazine.

“When I saw the competition, I was excited because I was looking for a personal trainer at the time. When I was called to be told I was the winner I was excited. However, things changed when I was told that the personal trainer was to help someone compete

in the triathlon. I said, oh no, I’m not the right person; please look for another winner because I have never done sport in my life and I was looking for a personal trainer at the gym. I was just not ready for what they told me,” she says.

Fabe says they explained to her that it would not be difficult, and the personal trainer would hold her hand. Despite the fact that she couldn’t run, cycle or swim, she embraced the Molly Fabe. challenge and started training. Midway through her training programme, she realised that she would not be able too comfortable to participate in the swim and transferred her entry to a duath-

lon. “I resumed my training, but then my husband fell ill and was hospitalised. I eventually completed the duathlon with a borrowed bicycle and positive attitude – my first multisport event – at 68 years of age. Bear in mind I had never done sport before but I managed to finish in an hour and 25 minutes. It was awesome. I enjoyed it but was exhausted.”

Sadly, her husband passed away at the end of October, leaving Fabe in a dark void of depression.

“You could say I went into hibernation. I did nothing for 2017. But when I saw that this

year the competition is just before my husband’s birthday, I thought I should do it to remember him. My husband was my biggest motivator, and still is. His birthday is 14 February, so doing this race on 10 February will be a great way to honour his memory.”

Fabe says she has been training a lot and now she has her own bicycle. “I am looking forward to it. Now I enjoy it. To think that I said this was not for me… but now I’m enjoying it. I know do the cycling, swim and running and I must say it is fun. I would like to encourage other women my age to take part. You are never too old to do anything, and you can always try something new.”

She is using this personal challenge as a platform to raise funds for the Cape Kidney Foundation.

‘Fun with numbers’ for learners TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

T

he LifeMatters Foundation (LMF) based in Meadowridge has developed a curriculum-based numeracy intervention programme called “Fun with Numbers”, which helps Grade 2 and 3 learners build a solid mathematical foundation.

LMF is a non-profit organisation and public benefit organisation that provides academic and psychosocial support to under-resourced primary schools in Cape Town.

They believe that every life matters and deserves help to build strong foundations, discover their worth and reach their full potential. LMF’s academic portfolio includes the Shine literacy intervention programme and a numeracy intervention programme, while their life skills portfolio includes a counselling programme, a Grade 7 camp and a teenage awareness programme.

Now they have developed the “Fun with Numbers” programme which will see learners receive two one-hour sessions per week from trained volunteers. The pro-

gramme allows learners to have fun while practising foundational mathematical concepts using the fun games and activities in the “Fun with Numbers” Manual.

This programme will begin on Monday 28 January to allow schools time to settle before they start taking learners out of class for extra support.

The organisation, which was established in 2002, works in Steenberg, Retreat, Capricorn and Westlake at five primary schools.

In addition, their teenage awareness workshops are run at schools throughout the city, with more affluent schools paying a “for profit” rate which covers the cost of the programme at one of the beneficiary schools.

Sharleen Haupt, academic portfolio manager, says Fun with Numbers is a volunteer-driven, early intervention programme for Grade 2 and 3 learners that need extra mathematics support.

“Fun with Numbers is CAPS National Curriculum compliant and focuses on key numeracy concepts needed as ‘building blocks’ for future mathematics learning.

Programme participants receive two hours of support per week from trained volunteers that take learners through the games and activities in the Fun with Numbers manual. The programme is managed by a LifeMatters Foundation centre manager who supervises and supports volunteers and works with teachers and administrators,” she says.

Haupt adds that the programme will improve the learners’ numeracy. “We believe that the Fun with Numbers numeracy programme allows learners to improve foundational numeracy skills because the model allows for individualised pace and attention and the programme focuses on

foundational concepts necessary to keep up with the curriculum. Volunteers, unlike teachers, have the time to implement methods and tools which aid comprehension.

Since many of the learners we work with are learning in a language that is not their home language, volunteers are trained to break down vocabulary and concepts and repeat activities until the learner has mastered it.”

The programme is specifically for Grade 2 and 3 learners as their goal is to catch children that need additional support early in their schooling career so that they can “catch up” and then keep up with the increasing demands of the curriculum with each passing school year.

“We all know that with both literacy and numeracy, there are important foundational concepts that need to be in place early. We assess all learners at the end of their Grade 1 year to determine which children have not mastered the basics and then provide support during Grade 2 and 3 so that learners are ready to face the challenges of the intermediate phase in Grade 4,” she says.

To ensure that they help more children, LMF is in great need of volunteers. “Our biggest need is for volunteers so we can add more learners to the programme. If you can spare an hour per week (during term time) you can volunteer. The only pre-requisites are the ability to read and write in English and understand basic maths. In addition, all volunteers must be police cleared (we provide this service at our offices). New volunteers need to attend a training and information session which is held twice per month in Meadowridge,” concludes Haupt.

A

father accused of killing his three-year-old twins last year died in Pollsmoor prison on Monday 14 January.

The Spanish dentist MarioCésar Deus Yela was incarcerated for the alleged murder of his children in his holiday home in Hout Bay. He was due to appear in the Cape Town High Court at the end of February. The 48year-old was arrested shortly after the incident which occurred last year. The twins’ mother found the bodies of the children in one of the bedrooms when she returned home.

David Lewies, Pollsmoor prison spokesperson, confirmed the

incident, saying: “On the morning of Monday 14 January at approximately 07:45 during unlock an official found the offender dead in his cell. We summoned the nurse to do the necessary in terms of confirming the death and she indicated that it appeared that the offender committed suicide through overdose of a combination of tablets. The case was reported to police and the family was contacted and informed,” said Lewies. The regional commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, Delikile Klaas, has called for an investigation into the death of Yela and a full incident report is required from the head of the Pollsmoor Remand Detention Facility.

Provincial health minister, Doctor Nomafrench Mbombo, welcomed the new intake of medical interns at New Somerset Hospital on Friday 11 January.

The junior doctors will be doing their two-year internship at public health facilities across the province.

New Somerset Hospital welcomed 25 new medical interns of a total of 333 interns who were allocated to the province for this year.

In addition to the new intakes, the hospital has 12 second-year interns, amounting to 36 medical interns in total.

Altogether, the Western Cape has about 500 medical interns across the service platform, inclusive of those who are in their second year of internship.

The purpose of internship is to provide well-rounded, patient-centred, team-based, practical work experience to these junior doctors.

They develop the practical skills to go with the theoretical base they already have, under the supervision and mentorship of more senior and experienced teams.

housands of residents made use of the 19 municipal swimming pools to cool down over the festive season.

“The City of Cape Town’s public swimming pools attracted thousands of visitors over the school holidays who were eager to cool off and relax. We only opened 19 of the 35 facilities in our commitment to continue water-saving practices and they will remain open until the end of January. A few of our pools have their own water resources and this has bolstered our efforts to save our precious water supply,” said Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien, in a statement.

The swimming pools remained open for longer on the more popular and hotter days of the festive season.

Badroodien commended the lifeguards for their dedication and commitment which ensured there were no fatal drownings at City pools.

There were, however, some incidents at the pools and lifeguards had their hands full with more than 300 help-outs and assisting in non-fatal drownings.

While pool lifeguards are there to ensure the safety of bathers, their tasks are made difficult when patrons do not play their part.

Several incidents at pools necessitated the intervention of Law Enforcement.

“There are still a few weeks left before pools close and I want to encourage residents to make use of the facilities responsibly. If you’re unsure of the rules, speak to our lifeguards and also inform them if you’re not confident in the water,” said Badroodien in the statement.

Bathers will still have the opportunity to enjoy the many facilities open until April.

“All indoor swimming pools, which include Long Street, Strand, Blue Downs, Retreat and the Sea Point Pavilion, will remain open throughout the year The other 14 pools will remain open until 21 April. However, from 1 February these pools will be open for use on weekends only,” Badroodien told People’s Post.

“During the April school holidays only, the following pools will be open every day.

These facilities are Atlantis, Kensington, Khayelitsha, Bellville South, Bonteheuwel, Vulindlela, Manenberg, Hanover Park, Goodwood, Eastridge, Muizenberg, Langa, Emthonjeni and Mnandi,” he said.

More than 1.5 million people use the City’s public swimming pools annually and, with water conservation still a priority, the City made provisions to use alternate water sources to keep the allocated pools filled.All operational swimming pools have been fitted with two 10 000F plastic tanks that are used to backwash and filter water that is circulated back into the swimming pool for re-use. By doing this, the City is saving a substantial amount of water that would have been lost.

Badroodien said a decision about which pools will be opened for the 2019/20 summer season will be made closer to the season.

Tips for staying safe at the pool: .Children under seven years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times .No alcohol or banned substances are allowed .No glass containers or weapons of any kind are allowed .No rough play, running, dunking or diving off shoulders is allowed .Don’t swim near or under the diving boards Should you get into trouble, try to stay calm and get to the edge of the pool to hold on. Don’t grab anyone else as you may pull them down with you. Raise your hand and wave to get attention.If someone else is in trouble, don’t get in if the water is too deep for you to stand. Immediately alert a lifeguard to the situation.

ith each academic year, learners battle to be enrolled at schools, leaving the children and parents frustrated.

Having seen how difficult it is for some learners to be placed at schools, a mother from Hout Bay decided to start a school that will help those learners that find themselves without a school.

That led to the birth of Olympians Academy in Hout Bay. Founded by Louise van Bala, the school aims to accommodate learners that were unsuccessful in being placed at a public school. Those attending are taught how to read, write and count.

The school also teaches social skills and offers extramural activities like dancing, soccer and athletics among others. Operating as a non-profit organisation, the school’s main focus is on Grade R, Grade 1 and Grade 2.

Van Bala says: “After taking my son for his first day of school I witnessed many angry and despondent parents outside the principal’s office and the school gates. They were upset because the school could not accommodate all the Grade 1 learners. One of those children was a very close friend of my son and my child couldn’t understand why they couldn’t share a desk. I soon realised something had to happen before we have children roaming aimlessly and being exposed to possible dangers.”

The academy has three full-time teachers and two volunteer teachers. Currently they have about six learners. “The number will grow.

As we realised last year, learners normally stream in from the end of

January onwards, after the parents have tried all avenues to have their kids placed at a school. Our focus is Grade R to Grade 2; however, if you are older up until the age of 12, then we will do our best to accommodate that pupil,” says Van Bala.

Although they have been operating for over a year it has not been an easy road. “It has been a tough journey, but so rewarding. The innocence of a child makes me realise exactly why I’m doing what I’m doing. Currently the school gets no funding and we do not have any investors. Needless to say, this is a huge strain on my finances. However, I am hopeful that we will get donors soon. The academy is in desperate need of funding in order to pay our staff and operating costs. If anyone wishes to make a donation, they can do so.”

‘Everyone should help protect schools’ School burglary and vandalism is a not a fight we can tackle alone, says provincial minister of education Debbie Schäfer.

Despite increased security measures at schools across the province during the December holiday period, Schäfer says perpetrators continue to target schools.A total of 27 burglary incidents and vandalism were reported by various schools across the province over the December holiday period.

During the same period last year, 33 incidents were reported.

“None of the incidents are classified as major, but some incidents are costing the department over R50 000,” she says. She adds that an incident is classified as minor if the estimated cost of repairs is below R100 000 and the school’s ability to function is not impacted in any way.

“At a Cape Winelands school, perpetrators stole 9metres of fencing,” she says. “How are we supposed to protect our learners from outside elements when school fences are being carried away bit by bit? I am especially calling on communities to report any suspicious behaviour around our schools – it is impossible that the perpetrators can remove 9m of fencing without being seen.”

She went on to say that at a Metro Central school, perpetrators targeted a feeding scheme kitchen They

stole over 100kg of food including rice, maize meal, beans and soya.

“They also stole copper taps and storage containers. It is simply deplorable to steal food out of the mouths of our learners. It is also completely irresponsible to damage water infrastructure, given the drought we have been through over the last few years,” she says.

In another incident in the Metro Central school, perpetrators gained access via the roof, damaging the roof and the ceiling. “The perpetrators ripped out wiring, damaging the school intercom system, and stole ICT equipment from the admin block,” says Schäfer.

She added that reported “minor” incidents included theft of copper pipes, electrical cabling, computer equipment and school stationery.

“In some incidents, perpetrators targeted schools simply to destroy property and left without stealing anything. This blatant destruction is unacceptable,” says Schäfer.

Damage to classrooms, school halls and computer labs included theft of and damage to light fittings, windows and sporting equipment.

“The estimated cost of damages thus far has come in at around R400 000 with only three quarters of the estimates having been calculated. It is devastating that people are prepared to do this to schools when we

know the desperate needs in education and the inadequacy of our budget to cope with them. We should be using these funds to build new schools, improve existing schools, appoint additional teachers and generally improve opportunities for children. School vandalism not only comes at a cost to the Education Department but to the learners and the community too.

Schäfer says while they can and do try to safeguard schools with additional security measures, they cannot win the fight against school burglary and vandalism without community support as schools, given their extensive physical infrastructure, are very difficult areas to secure.

“A school is a community asset.

Tackling the scourge of burglary and vandalism at Western Cape schools is not a fight that we can tackle alone. Everyone should help protect schools as it is fundamental to the future of our children. Our Safe Schools Directorate is very active in mobilising communities to look after schools, in conjunction with the police and communitybased organisations. The cooperation of the community and the police is essential in order to combat vandalism and to create a safe school environment that promotes teaching and learning.”

Help SPCA prevent animal neglect T

he Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA is urging animal owners and residents to be more aware of their pets when left unattended in vehicles while travelling.

“We receive numerous calls relating to dogs being left unattended in cars throughout the year.

“The studies have proven that a dog can die from heatstroke in under 15 minutes inside a car, even with the windows rolled down, regardless of outside temperatures. Of course during summer when the heat intensifies the risk is even more deadly and anyone who could choose to put their pet at risk should reap the consequences of such neglectful behaviour,” says CoGH SPCA spokesperson Tara McGovern.

In order to correctly report such an incident to the SPCA, residents need to ensure there is suitable evidence to allocate an inspector to investigate the matter and trace a vehicle.

“Without the correct evidence to document the case, we are unable to pursue the lead,” she adds.

If you should see a dog locked in a car unattended, send the following information to the CoGh SPCA via social media, email or telephonically: . An accurate vehicle registration,

and make and colour of the car. . A description of the dog(s) in the car (breed and colour). . Location of where the vehicle is parked – also in full sun or under trees, etc. . Approximate amount of time that the complainant has observed the dog(s) in the vehicle. . Whether or not any windows are open. . Photos of the dog(s) in the car and registration, if possible.

“The information above will assist the inspector that is requested to undertake a welfare inspection and educate the owner. It would be difficult for them to have a conversation with the owner/ driver or issue them with a notice if they don’t have all the facts.

This information will also enable us to eliminate potentially fake complaints that is when someone may be using the SPCA to get back at someone for personal reasons,” says McGovern.

She says that the SPCA will not be able to request a trace or allocate an inspection if the information asked for in the points above is not provided.

Andrew Klazinga is back TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji Andrew Klazinga (29), a magician and mentalist from Constantia, is back with a far bigger and much better show called What You Don’t See and promises that it will be the best show yet for lovers of magic.

The shows premiers in three weeks’ time at the Alexander Bar on Thursday 7 February and runs until Saturday 9 February. The cost is R90 per person pre-booked or R100 at the door.

This one-man show has also been accepted into the 2019 National Arts Festival in Makhanda (Grahamstown) and Klazinga hopes to take it to the Cape Town Fringe Festival this year.

His debut solo show called If I Really Did Have Powers (“Local appears in first solo show”, People’s Post, 3 October 2018) left a lot of people calling for more, hence his decision to do another show.

“This show is an evolution of the first one and people will really enjoy this one. I go into the future and predict stuff. This is really different from the first one. I have grown,I have experience and I’m excited for this one.

This show is for everyone and it will blow a lot of people away,” he says.

Klazinga has no doubt that he has mastered the art of magic as he has been doing it for over 16 years. It all started when he went to a party and saw a magician. In a previous interview with People’s Post he said: “When I was young I went to a party and there was a magician there.

thrilled with his magic and I just knew that is something that I wanted to do. I asked him where he learnt it and he said at the College of Magic,” he said.

That is where his journey began. After seeing a lot of his friends doing solo performances, he also decided to do one and it went well.

Despite being an introvert, he says when he takes to the stage he is happy and confident. “I feel like I’m larger than life. You wouldn’t say I’m an introvert. I really love what I become on stage and I’m glad that people really love it. People don’t really go to theatre and when they see me perform they already ask me for the next show,” he says.

Creativity runs in his blood. Apart from studying magic for six years, teaching at the School of Magic and doing photography, he also runs his own company. “I just can’t sit still. The fact that I’m an introvert also helps me to get things done. I’m a graduate of the College of Magic where I lectured for six years and earned my Silver Medallion Award for my first one-man show. I’m also a member of the 85-year Cape Magicians Circle where I won the 2018 contest and member of the year.

I’m also part of the Cape Town Magic Club and have been featured in their last two years of runs at the Waterfront and Artscape.

I also write articles about magic for magic.africa and have their most viewed article. I just love keeping busy,” he says.

Set new record by reading With World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) being celebrated on Friday 1 February, Nal’ibali is calling on South Africans to join in the festivities. Nal’ibali, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) which focuses on reading for enjoyment, is hoping to reach a staggering 1.5 million children on the day. This is about 500 000 more than last year’s target.

WRAD seeks to draw attention to the importance of reading aloud to children in their mother tongue. Every year, thousands of South Africans join in the celebration, for their children, their language and their future. This year Nal’ibali is asking those who are already readers to not only read the story commissioned for WRAD 2019 with their children on the day, but to reach out to their networks and encourage others to do the same and be part of South Africa’s literacy solution.­The NGO says there is huge potential to turn the country’s “literacy crisis” around so that reading becomes a powerful tool to tackle inequality and poverty.

“While education may be the most powerful weapon, reading aloud and storytelling are integral building blocks in learning,” reads a statement from the NGO This is why Jade Jacobsohn, Nali’bali’s managing director, says: “Every year we commission a brand-new story and translate it into all 11 official SA languages. Then we encourage adults and caregivers across the country to join us in reading it aloud to children on WRAD”.This year’s story Where Are You? was written by Ann Walton, a well known South African author and illustrator of children’s books. The story can be downloaded from the Nal’ibali website. “We’d like to encourage South Africans to register that they will be reading aloud and to share pictures of their reading sessions online,” says Jacobsohn.She adds that most of the teaching that happens in a child’s early years is oral, and being able to recognise and understand a wide pool of words better equips them to learn and succeed in the classroom.

“The reading of a story out loud not only shows children the value of books but starts discussions, builds bonds between the reader and the audience and motivates children to learn to read and enjoy books beyond their current reading ability,” says Jacobsohn.

“Last year, with the help of our network partners and the public, we managed to read to over a million children. In 2019, our aim is to beat that record and reach 1.5 million!”

With the support of the Department of Basic of Education, thousands of school children and teachers will be joining the celebration too.A special event will be held on the morning of 1 February, at Sandton Library, Johannesburg, with 200 children from Soweto and Alexandra. The event will be attended by this year’s campaign ambassador, children’s author and social activist Lebohang Masango, and is supported by the Department of Education and its Read to Lead campaign.

City’s mural project hits halfway T

he completion of four murals in Athlone signals the halfway mark in the pilot mural project first initiated in Leonsdale by the City of Cape Town’s Arts and Culture branch.

Professional artists from around the city and aspiring artists from Athlone took part in the project which will expand to other areas.

The project consists of the painting of four ground-to-roof wall murals at the City-owned flats in Kannabast and Strandroos closes in Kewtown.

“With these murals the City hopes to demonstrate the ways in which art can contribute towards transformation in vulnerable communities; establish a positive and stronger neighbourhood identity, and make art more accessible to everyone and thereby improve our public facilities and spaces,” says City of Cape Town mayor Dan Plato.

He adds that street art can bring growth and value to a community, as seen around the world.

“I would like to see some international street artists visit Cape Town

in the near future so that we can draw the attention of tourists, and then share with them the many beautiful public murals that our local artists have done in our city,” adds Plato.

Artists who lent their creative flair to the project are Eugene Bezuidenhout from Wynberg, visual artists Roscoe Masters and Grant Jurius from Diep River and Elsies River respectively, and part-time art teacher at the Zonnebloem Children’s Arts Centre, Gary Frier from Kuils River.

Local emerging artists who took part in the project are Lance Coetzee, Royden Croy, Landen Davids, Matthew de Lange, Julian Wagner and Kyle Murphy.

The greater Athlone area is rich in culture and history and the four themes aim to reflect this.

These four themes pay tribute to the anti-apartheid struggle and depict the faces of icons; the various sporting traditions of the area; a celebration of the local cuisine; and the arts and culture history of the area, especially in terms of music and theatre.

“Mural projects can play an important role in the city because they assist in transforming spaces and communities and make a contribution to social and economic development. We will prioritise storytelling through murals by commissioning local artists; involving community participation including consultation and collaboration, as well as promoting skills transfer and development for community-based artists and emerging artists in communities,” adds Badroodien.

The large-scale mural project at public housing facilities will be rolled out in all four areas of the city during the next financial year.

Marine sciences officially start at pilot schools The Two Oceans Aquarium, in partnership with Gansbaai Academy, Simon’s Town High and South Peninsula High, launched Marine Sciences as a new pilot subject.

The three schools have been selected as “Marine Sciences node schools” and will offer the new subject to Grade 10 learners.

The learners will be the pilot group and successful candidates will be awarded a Two Oceans Aquarium Grade 12 Marine Sciences certificate when matriculating.

The pilot will guide teachers to introduce the subject as an official matric subject for Grade 10 learners in 2020.

For Russell Stevens, head of education at the Two Oceans Aquarium, this is a significant milestone in the work towards the development of the subject, which will be implemented in schools across the country from 2020.

“This project is gaining momentum and the process has put the Two Oceans Aquarium on the map for the most senior officials in the country. Our team has worked very hard at developing partnerships with the Department of Basic Education and in the provincial education departments (WCED; Eastern Cape; KZN and the Gauteng Education Department). All are now familiar with our programmes and the significance of our offering in the South African education landscape. Support from senior officials in the departments of education has shown recognition for the contribution made by the Two Oceans Aquarium staff in the partnering with South Africa’s formal education sector,” he says.

The Two Oceans Aquarium has a very active and respected education department that sees approximately 70 000 learners visit the aquarium each year to be introduced to the wonders of the marine ecosystems. In addition, 30 000 children are exposed to the aquarium’s two outreach programmes. Additionally, since 2005, the Two Oceans

Aquarium’s Environmental Education Centre has offered enrichment courses for learners from Grade 6 through to Grade 12.

These courses, usually presented over weekends or during school holidays and through various sponsorships, are offered free of charge for the learners. It is from these highly acclaimed and ever-popular courses that the aquarium’s education team was approached by the Department of Education to develop the Marine Sciences curriculum for schools.

The Marine Sciences curriculum has been conceived to cover the following five sub-disciplines: . Marine Geography and Geology: this section deals with the structure and origins of coastlines, the seafloor and sediments, and how these change over time. . Marine Chemistry: the chemical composition and properties of seawater, and the effects of pollutants on ocean life. . Marine Physics: waves, tides and currents, as well as the ways in which the ocean acts as a driver of weather and climate. . Marine Biology: marine life and includes ecology, fundamental biology, classification, evolutionary processes, and the adaptation of marine organisms to their environments. . Humans and the Ocean: this section highlights how humans use the ocean for food, travel and recreation, and how renewable and non-renewable resources are harvested.

This section also considers the importance of research in understanding the ocean and the effects that human activities and practices have on the ocean and larger global patterns (e.g. climate change, ocean acidification). The issue of sustainability is foregrounded in the teaching of the entire subject.

Follow boys through their journey T

he 2018 Standard Bank Ovation Awardwinning play, Sainthood, which interrogates all-boys’ school culture, comes to the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio from Wednesday 6 to Saturday 23 February at 19:30, with Saturday matinees at 15:00.

Moulded out of pure curiosity on the part of the writer and director who began writing the play after listening to the stories of some of her male friends – former “Saints” boys (all boys school).

As a former “Saints” girl herself, she had a perfectly good idea of what she was dealing with, and while some of the experiences were delightful, others were completely terrifying. This dichotomy gave rise to the birth of this essential and vibrant work.

Tiisetso Mashifane, playwright, says: “Adolescence is such an important developmental stage in one’s life and we spend most of it at school and more often than not, we brush it off as something fleeting, when it can be so defining to one’s early adult character. I have watched countless representations of popular high school culture and most of them are usually quite whimsical and animated in nature. I wanted to revert the trope as a ‘survival of the fittest’ representation of South African private school culture that shows that it is not as glamorous as it is so often portrayed.”

She has assembled a hugely talented, allmale cast comprising recent UCT graduates Adam Lennox, Tevin Musara, Cullum

McCormack, Mphumzi Nontshinga and Simphiwe Shabalala.

Sainthood follows five fictional matric boys in a fictional private school through a non-fictional narrative created from stories from books, newspaper articles and anonymous interviews with “Saints” boys that cover a range of topics from sexuality to racism.

The play is a minimalist and intense theatre experience that uses elements of physical theatre and chorus work through an escalating episodic structure that is led through a turbulent seesaw between masculinity and femininity that the characters either embrace or beat to death.

Band to rock the Cape Few heavy metal bands have stood the test of time quite like the old-school rockers Judas Priest, during their music career that has lasted for 40 years, and on Wednesday 20 March, these music legends will be rocking the Grand Arena, GrandWest.

Formed in the early 1970s in Birmingham, England, Judas Priest was one of the first metal bands to wear leather and studs – a look that has been embraced by metalheads around the world.

Judas Priest won a Grammy Award in 2010 for Best Metal Performance.

They were nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 and in March this

Tough, but good year ahead D

ue to the uncertainty pertaining to land reform policies, 2018 was not a great year for the property market.

However, there are those that think the worst is over and that once we have put the elections behind us we will start to see things improving, for both the property market and the economy at large.

With the country having just emerged from a technical recession, after the gross domestic product contracted for the second quarter in a row, indicators suggest another tough year ahead of us, says Paul Stevens, CEO of Just Property.

“The country’s rapidly increasing cost of living, predominantly a result of the increasing cost of fuel, has put severe pressure on consumer spending. Inflation is expected to be higher in 2019 and the possibility of interest rates increasing looms large. Both homeowners and tenants are going to be increasingly stretched to meet their monthly home loan or rental commitments.”

Despite this, there have been forecasts predicting a higher growth in 2019 than we’ve had last year.

“We are in a buyer’s market and this will continue through most of 2019,” Stevens

predicts.

“Those who qualify for finance or who are able to buy for cash will be in a good position to take advantage of the current conditions.

Most of the property sales activity in the past year has been in the R300 000 to R1 500 000 range. During the course of the coming year, I expect this to continue. Government is focused on developing our economy, at least in part through the development of entrepreneurs. If successful, we should see an increasing number of people able to enter the lower end of the property market.”

Lightstone’s Residential Property indices (October 2018) indicate that the average house price increase for the 2018 period, across South Africa, has been 3.77%, with the Western Cape performing best at a 9.9% increase and the Northern Cape showing the least growth with only 1.1%.

Stevens estimates that “this low growth rate will continue and in particular, I think we will see more normalisation, with the Western Cape possibly showing a lower growth rate in the coming year, despite the relief from the drought.

“From a rental perspective, I see our current conditions with high vacancies and low

escalations across most of the country, fuelled by lower-than-normal demand, continue into 2019. Historically, we have seen rental demands increase during tough economic times. But this is not happening now. Our data partners, TPN, report that average tenancy periods have increased to 18 months and the average age of tenants is now 32 (up from 24 in 2008). Their data shows that fewer people are entering the rental market and the majority of those that are, rent for less than R7000 per month. The short-to-mediumterm opportunities for property investors and landlords therefore lies in properties that allow for multi-generational living and in properties that can be rented for R3500 to R7000 per month.”

Exacerbating things on the rental front is the increasing delinquency rates of tenants who are applying for tenancies. Along with this comes decreasing rental recovery rates.

Stevens advises that for the upcoming year “landlords should screen and manage their tenants more carefully than ever. Good property management agents (for example, those with access to tenant payment behaviours and cost-effective rent guarantees) have an opportunity to add value to land-

lords. Managing risk and correctly pricing properties will be of the utmost importance.”

Economics aside, 2019 will bring continued change to the way buyers and sellers, and tenants and landlords, are able to transact, says Stevens.

Technology is being harnessed and the real estate industry is changing for the better.

Long-held, traditional ways of doing business that frustrate clients are being challenged. This is bad news for those who are unwilling to embrace change and good news for the end-consumers, says Stevens.

“Property transactions are going to be managed more efficiently and with greater transparency than ever,” he insists.

“They will be easier and less expensive. I don’t believe that systems and technology will replace real estate professionals; the circumstances around property transactions are too diverse, convoluted and unpredictable. A

dominant pitching performance by the Athlone A’s national pitcher Dean Jacobs set up an 8-1 victory against Maitland Giants in the Cape Town Baseball Federation Major League match at Vangate Sports Complex on Saturday 19 January.

Jacobs meant business as he wanted to avenge their 9-8 loss to Giants in the first round of fixtures where he was similarly in control until Giants fought back. He threw all nine innings, only conceding three hits and three walks while striking out four Giants hitters.

A’s opened the scoring in the third inning, scoring two runs with two outs from two walks and a hit from Jason Carelse. Giants responded with their only run in the fifth in-

ning, also on two outs with A’s committing two errors.

The turning point in the game came in the sixth inning where A’s scored six from three hits, five walks and two errors from Giants to take an 8-1 lead which turned out to be the winning score.

Giants utilised two pitchers. Americanborn Connor Walsh threw his mandatory five innings, conceding two runs and five hits, walking five and striking out six A’s hitters. He was relieved by Kyle Ripepi who pitched three innings, conceding five runs, walking five and striking out three A’s hitters.

Top hitters for A’s were Faizel Moosa (3/4) and Jason Carelse (2/4). Giants recorded three scattered hits.

In the other Major League fixture Bothas-

ig Knights came from a 3-7 and an 8-11 deficit to beat Bellville Tygers 16-13 in the Northern Suburbs Derby at PP Smit Sports Grounds.

The game was highlighted with seven home runs, which included two grand slams and three double plays.

Top hitters for Tygers were Jonathan Phillips (3/4) (two home runs with one a grand slam), Russell Olivier and Tyrone Milne (2/4). Kyle Botha (4/6, with a grand slam) and Benji Smith (3/6, with a home run) were Knights’ best hitters.

Jared Elario started the pitching for Knights, throwing 5.1 innings before being relieved by Darren Smith for 3.2 innings.

Tygers utilised three pitchers – Kevin Townend pitching 4.1 innings, and Lloyd Stevens and Russell Olivier both pitching 2.1 innings each.

Tygers’ defence turned three double plays.

In the Major League B, hosts Helderberg Pirates shouted out visitors Battswood 5-0 at Radloff Park in Somerset West.

Austrian Szon Tomkiewicz threw five scoreless innings and struck out four Battswood hitters. He was relieved by Darryn Chalmers and Kieran Clacket who both threw two innings each to combine for the shutout.

Veteran Liall Mauritz started on the mound for Battswood. Only Szon Tomkiewicz (2/4) for Pirates and Nelson Mapika (2/4) stood out in the game. Battswood made five errors with Pirates making four.

In other Major League B results, Thistle lost 17-7 to Westridge Yankees and Grassy Park Crusaders beat Milnerton Mavericks 14-4.

Spirited Banyana run Dutch close D

espite a spirited second-half fight-back, the South African women’s football team went down 2-1 to the Netherlands in the inaugural Winnie Mandela International Challenge played at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday 19 January.

The Dutch struck with two early first-half goals, with Thembi Kgatlana managing to score what eventually turned out to be a consolation goal for Banyana Banyana, netting in the 33rd minute of the contest.

Kgatlana picked up where she’d left off in Banyana’s epic run to the Women’s African Cup of Nations final last year, when she finished as the tournament’s top goal scorer with five goals.

This was the first match of the year for both sides, and they used it to kick-start preparations for the upcoming Fifa Women’s World Cup in France in June.

Despite the defeat, it was a much-improved performance from South Africa, and certainly a good start to World Cup preparations, having previously lost 1-0 and 2-1 to the same opponents in 2016.

Banyana Banyana next face Sweden, also at the Cape Town Stadium, in the Albertina Sisulu Centenary Challenge tonight at 19:00.

Both sets of travelling teams were welcomed by the City of Cape Town’s mayor Dan Plato last week.

“The City would like to extend a warm welcome to all three teams as they battle on the field in preparation for the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup that will take place in France during June and July this year. We are extremely proud to be the host city for the preparation matches, especially since this is the first time that Banyana Banyana have qualified to compete in a Fifa Women’s

World Cup,” said Plato.

He added that sport has a unifying role in society and that it contributed more than R8.8bn to the Western Cape GDP between 2012 and 2015.

“The economic contribution is testament to the significant role of sport and sporting tourism in local economic development,” said Mayco member for economic opportunities and asset management, James Vos. Banyana Banyana took on Sweden in a closed session on Thursday last week at the Athlone Stadium.

“We are indeed honoured to be hosting Banyana Banyana for their World Cup preparation matches. Capetonians are urged to come out in large numbers in support of the beautiful game and our beautiful team, and armed with the ‘gees’ of the 2010 Fifa World Cup. We wish the team well with their preparations, and all the best for the matches in the World Cup later this year,” said Vos. At the welcoming event held last Tuesday, Vos reiterated that the City believes that Cape Town is a city of sports lovers, with topclass sports facilities, a functioning tourism sector and locals who exhibit the best “gees” at sporting events.

“Therefore, it makes sense for us, together with the Western Cape Government, to cultivate the lucrative sport tourism industry.

Besides the players and their support staff, spectators travelling to watch sporting events also contribute millions to the economy. An added benefit is the spend at the city’s tourism attractions and the associated services while visitors are in Cape Town, such as accommodation, transport and the hospitality sector as a whole. It is not always just about the event itself,” said Vos.

UWC’s rugby team is preparing to take part in their first ever Varsity Cup match against UCT’s Ikeys.

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is calling on the community to support the FNB Varsity Cup side as they make their historic debut in the 2019 FNB Varsity Cup. Coach Chester Williams, rector and vicechancellor Prof. Tyrone Pretorius and director of sport Mandla Gagayi have made an impassioned plea to the UWC community, including alumni, former rugby players and donors, to support UWC as they make history this year.

In 2018, UWC were promoted to the Varsity Cup after beating the University of Fort Hare 39-18 in the final match of the Varsity Shield.

The promotion was a dream come true and the culmination of seven years of hard work to reach the Varsity Cup. Since the arrival of 1995 Rugby World Cup winner Chester Williams in 2016, the UWC side has been in top form. Now, Williams is calling on everyone connected to UWC to rally behind the team.

“The players have worked very hard, not just with rugby training but in their studies too, and they are now going to put their bodies on the line for this university. I want to urge the students to come out and support.

I want them to come to every home game and show their support for the team,” says Williams.

Pretorius, who has been a staunch supporter of the rugby side, says advancing to the Varsity Cup is proof that UWC is committed to excellence, performing at the high-

est levels and nurturing talent.

“I am very proud of the team and coaching staff and glad that their hard work has been rewarded with their move to the top tier in university rugby,” says Pretorius.

“As a university community we should be exceptionally proud that we are the first historically disadvantaged institution to be competing at this elite level. We need to rally behind our boys, cheer them on and celebrate their successes. We need to encourage and pick them up on days that they are not successful,” Pretorius adds.

Gagayi says UWC rugby owes its success to all those who have gone before. “The promotion to the Varsity Cup symbolised a great game changer and it is proof of UWC’s role of giving hope to those who never had opportunities before.”

Gagayi says that during all the pressure and excitement, the team must never forget the things that led to where they are.

“We must never lose our identity just because we want to conform or adapt to challenges of the present. We must manage our expectations and never put our student athletes and coaches under pressure. Our teams have been great because we have always allowed our student athletes and coaches to express themselves freely on and off the field,” adds Gagayi.

The UWC rugby team is preparing to take part in the 12th season of the Varsity Cup, kicking off against the University of Cape Town’s Ikey Tigers on Monday 4 February.
