Arise and shine to observe a true spectacle of colour, glitz, glamour and entertainment at the 10th annual Cape Town Carnival set to brighten up 1.2km along the Cape Town Fan Walk on Saturday 16 March. Organisers, performers, sponsors and spectators joined in celebrating the official 50-day countdown to the carnival on Wednesday last week.

People’s Post is one of the media partners to the event. The Carnival is described as an international event with thousands of locals being joined by spectators from other parts of the country and the world, who travel to observe the marvel first hand. The carnival is also an opportunity for social cohesion, bringing together people from different communities across the city. he lease contracts for numbers 8 and 10 Tenby Road in Wnyberg ends this week and tenants who have been accused of committing criminal offences are yet to vacate the premises as per the City of Cape Town’s report.

The tenants were meant to vacate the premises in October last year after their contract with the City “was prematurely terminated due to the severity of their breach of agreement” (“Concerning’ Tenby cottages leased”, People’s Post, 07 August).

The cottages have been implicated in a series of criminal related incidents. Last year, drugs were found on the premises and the tenants have been accused of interfering with traffic flow through illegal parking.

A robbery incident was also reported around the premises.

Amid all the complaints, the City was forced to terminate the contract in October last year. Despite the termination, the tenants continue to occupy the premises.

Then mayco member for assets and facilities management, Stuart Diamond, confirmed that the lessees had failed to adhere to the agreed-upon purpose of the leases and that an illegal substance had been found on the site.

He said there was enough evidence to terminate the leases with the lessees, which had come into effect in February 2016. The agreement comes to an end on Thursday 31 January.

Responding to the People’s Post about the

tenants’ failure to vacate the premises, the City agrees that the tenants are still on the premises.

“The lessee had a three-year lease agreement,” a response from the City’s Property Management Department reads. “The lessee was required in terms of the termination notice, to vacate by the 21 October 2018 but has failed to vacate on the prescribed date. The City’s Property Management Department did a follow-up inspection, which revealed that the tenants have not vacated either property. A request was submitted to the City’s Legal Services Department last month to institute the eviction process.”

Wynberg police and residents previously confirmed several incidents and arrests made at the premises (“Controversy over cottages grows”, People’s Post, 24 July).

Wynberg Police Station spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Lindipasi says the perpetrator had arranged on the internet to sell something to the victim and they agreed to meet at Wynberg Pharmacy.

“This guy arrived at Wynberg Pharmacy and told the victim that they must go to number 8 Tenby Road. Upon arrival the victim found three African men. They started searching him and took his R60 cash and a gold chain and then told him to undress. He remained naked and one of them took his silver J7 Samsung and bank cards, then demanded the Pin code.

“One of them went to the ATM to withdraw money, but the transaction was declined as he first gave them the wrong Pin. They again forced him to give them the right Pin,” she says.

Mosaic book launch tomorrow NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku

T

he voluntary work of the Mosaic Training Service and Healing Centre for Women will no longer be expressed in spoken word, but stored in black and white as the founder, Rolene Miller, has decided to pen it down.

Being a social worker by profession, Miller believes that sharing experiences and empowering one another is vital in fighting the scourge of violence.

On Wednesday 30 January she will launch her book titled Womandla! Women Power, at the Jacob Gitlin Library in Gardens.

This comes 25 years after she founded the centre.

Mosaic started by offering counselling training to women from disadvantaged communities of Cape Town, producing social auxiliary workers over the years and reaching a large number of abused women, some of whom also became trainers and joined the organisation.

It also helps women with court processes when seeking protection.

It operates in 14 courts around Cape Town and as far Rolene Miller as Atlantis, Worcester and Paarl.

Miller says the book is full of true-life ex-

periences that teach women how to become self-empowered and powerful.

Remembering why she founded the NGO and what can be expected from the book, Miller says: “I wanted to expose the issue of abuse, which is still taboo in many cultures.

It is not spoken about, and abused women are ashamed of being abused.”

“It (the book) is ultimately written to reach a wider audience about the lessons that were learnt at Mosaic.

“The public can expect a human story about 10 grassroots and poorly educated

trainees who studied for one year when I taught them social work skills. It is a story of their graduation and their self-empowerment.

“It is about love, faith in God, respect, trust, honesty and caring that we shared during our training year together,” says Miller Some of the organisation’s graduates and abuse survivors had an input in the book, giving testimonies, comments and a word of thought for abuse victims.

About 1000 hard copies are ready to be purchased and will be available at bookstores at a cost of R230 per book.

Taking it far with love for animals NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku Plumstead resident, Ellen Fedele, is extending her love of animals outside her home town to ease the burden of the families for a group of Mpumalanga miners.

The families were reportedly left destitute following investigations into alleged fraud and corruption at one of the mines in Middelburg. It is reported that the mineworkers have not been paid for three months and are now struggling to make ends meet.

That led to the establishment of “Feed the Miner” campaign in December by a group of concerned Mpumalanga residents. They started to collect donations to assist the families.

Approximately 300 families are benefitting from the campaign.

Organisers raised awareness and sent letters to various stakeholders, which is how Fedele got involved.

“I realised that not much is being done for the animals, and it was mentioned that most of the miners have pets [including] dogs, cats and chickens. If there is no food for people, you can imagine how it is for animals.”

Fedele then approached the Cape of Good Hope SPCA for a collection point and she says an agreement was reached.

She says there will soon be boxes

where the public can drop off their donations, ranging from bags of dog food, sachets and pellets for cats, chicken feed, food bowls, blankets and any other items people wish to donate.

Meanwhile, Fedele is also looking for a plan to transport the collected donations once there is enough bulk to send to the families.

“I will have to find some way to get it to them, so some begging on my part of big truck companies or SAA to get bulk donations will probably be the order of the day! If any readers can assist with this, it would be greatly appreciated.”

Zonica Mostert, the coordinator of the Feed the Miner campaign, says they are extremely grateful for Fedele’s gesture.

She says they are trying to help the miners in every possible way and they have been getting support for the people but not much for the pets.

Mqabuko Moyo Ndukwana of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA confirmed their agreement with Fedele, saying the organisation supports initiatives that closely promote the welfare of animals.

He said they understand that their centre is more accessible and central, and encouraged the public to open their hearts and support Fedele in any possible way.

Safety tips for Wynberg community Almost a month after the festive season ended, crime in the Wynberg precinct remains a concern.

Wynberg police have warned the public to remain cautious and try at all times to avoid unintentionally attracting criminals.

Captain Ntomboxolo Lindipasi says the theft of motor vehicles is becoming a major concern in the precinct.

According to her report, affected areas include Church Street, Park Road, Egham Road, Main Road, Morom Road, Gibson Road, Langley Road, Station Road, Salisbury Road, Rosemead Avenue and Wolfe Street.

She further warns cellphone shop owners to install security systems, panic buttons and burglar doors in their shops as she says

they are also being targeted by criminals.

People who purchase items over Gumtree are also being scammed. They need to be careful, especially those who are told to deposit the money before receiving the goods.

“Be very careful before doing anything, rather go to the nearest police station to meet the person or any visible place,” she says.

In the Silo Arena, an industrial container that has travelled over 173 809km to various countries in the world has been placed as a platform for engagements.

The container symbolises a bridging point between people and their perspectives on space.

frica Christian Action, a non-profit organisation based in Claremont, is appealing for public support of their march against abortion on Thursday 31 January.

The march will start from Keizersgracht Street in Cape Town and continue to the National Assembly. The protest comes as the nation marks 22 years since the legalisation of abortion. Taryn Lourens, the coordinator, says Christians who respect the sanctity of life will be observing Thursday as a day of prayer and repentance for the national sin of abortion. She calls on everyone, irrespective of race, age and gender, to participate and have their voices heard.

Lourens says there is power in unity and

if many people from different aspects of life could pray together and stand up for unborn babies, they could win their fight.

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Proverbs 31:8: ‘Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter’.Most of the medical personnel in our country are church members. Most mothers go to church. Most voters in South Africa claim to be Christians. If Christians in South Africa could stop and look at the abortion holocaust in the light of the Bible, if we could understand something of the heart of God on this disgraceful abomination, then we would be roused to prayer and action,” says Lourens.

he Cape Town Carnival will set the scene for glitz and glamour once again as the event returns, celebrating a decade this year.

The event will be held on Saturday 16 March, with the pre-parade starting from 18:00.

The official countdown event was held last Wednesday at Nasdak. This event marked 50 days to the carnival.

Each year, the carnival attracts thousands of spectators who come together to celebrate cultures, history and social cohesion through a display of colour and splendour. “This year’s theme is Vuka Ukhanye: Arise and Shine!, a call to action

to shake off limiting beliefs and be all we can be,” said Cape Town Carnival CEO Jay Douwes.

Rachel Jafta, founder of the Carnival and chairperson of the Cape Town Carnival Trust, said: “The Cape Town Carnival was envisaged as a way of bringing people together and building social cohesion, while offering an extraordinary visual and creative feast and a skills development hub for a wide array of skills.”

Jafta continued that the event has since become a global event with people travelling from both other provinces in South Africa and the rest of the world to marvel in the spectacle that is the Cape Town Carnival. Another part of the carnival is the annual skills transfer project that sees job creation for residents from vulnerable commu-

Baard says the city’s vital social and cultural character is kept alive by creating and supporting social interaction between all Capetonians and through recognition of one another. “Cape Town’s spirit shouldn’t be underestimated – it’s part of the fabric of our society,” he said.

The event featured a panel discussion by role players and sponsors.Award-winning artist and arts curator Khanyisile Mbongwa, who is assisting the Carnival team, said: “Cape Town Carnival occupies a unique space and role, communicating through the language of the carnivalesque, which is a combination of creativity, exaggeration, colour and spectacle at the intersection of social commentary and celebration. This is really important. We have a difficult history in this country and this city and we cannot do things without asking ourselves serious questions. This year, the carnival asks those questions. The freedom to play, the time to play, and the opportunity to play: these have been politically and socially denied to many South Africans for a long time, making play a political act. Carnival asserts the right to play.

The Carnival provides a vehicle for residents to reclaim the city.”

Dunisani Chabalala, deputy director of the National Department of Arts and Culture says they are proud to be associated with the event and hoped it would become a flagship initiative as part of the department.

Lead performer Nonkoliseko Samagu said carnival gave her the outlet to express herself through art and dance. She said she was excited to be part of the initiative every year because it not only helps her, but also gives her an outlet to help others through an organisation she has started.

A watchful eye on scrapyards W

ith the focus on curtailing metal theft in the rail environment, the Rail Enforcement Unit (REU) conducted a total of 121 inspections of scrapyards, bucket shops and hotspots this past week.

Arrests were made in the Woodstock, Claremont and Rondebosch areas.

Seven arrests were made for possession of stolen property, malicious damage to property, attempted robbery and theft.

Furthermore, there were 29 confiscations of copper cable (13m), seven units of liquor, four bags, two overalls, one saw, one saw blade and a knife.

Several notices were also issued.

Metrorail Western Cape regional manager Richard Walker says collaboration is a positive step towards restoring the general public’s faith in rail.

“We have seen how crime is displaced from one area to another as soon as we clamp down.The areas where the REU’s arrests were made this past week are known for antisocial behaviour – a source of concern to both residents and businesses. We remain open to joint initiatives and will engage the Chamber of Commerce and residents’ associations with a view to join the fight against crime,” says Walker.

Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase says: “I’m eager to see more commuters returning to rail. The REU’s efforts to curtail metal theft will, over time, resonate in a more stable and reliable rail service which will ensure that this mode of transport becomes the first choice for those who are travelling to and from work.

“A shift from road-based transport to rail will assist to alleviate the congestion on Cape Town’s roads during the peak-hour pe-

riods.

“This will have a big influence on our residents’ quality of life because the less time they spend on travelling, the more time they will have with their loved ones,” she says.

Provincial minister of transport and public works and chairperson of the Rail Management Task Team (RMTT), Donald Grant said: “We are pleased to see the Rail Enforcement Unit (REU) continuing to focus sharply on criminal activity that is targeting the rail. I believe the work being done by the REU will go a long way towards discouraging would-be criminals from stealing property and damaging Metrorail infrastructure. It is important that commuters’ confidence in rail is immediately restored, and that safety within the rail network remains top of mind.”

The public can assist these efforts by reporting crime and vandalism, as this forms part of the intelligence that drives deployment and operations.

Depression is real Depression, not all in the mind.

A mother in her thirties came to see me with severe depression and generalised anxiety.

I was quite shocked when she informed me that l diagnosed her with depression at the age of seventeen but her parents refused to accept the diagnosis.

They told her that there was no such thing as depression or anxiety and threw her tablets away.

She never sought professional help for the next 17 years and suffered from her depression and went through two marriages.

She plucked up the courage to see me because her anxiety and depression was getting the better of her.

She stayed in her room, rarely went out, felt down, lost weight and had no interest in doing pleasurable things.

She was just not enjoying the idea of living.

Depression has many causes. Loss of a job, losing a home, divorce, breakup, major financial loss, unhappy environment at work, school and home, being constantly picked upon at school, home or work, having major illness like heart attacks, strokes, arthritis, cancer are some of the causes.

There are, however, many instances where there is no cause for the depression.

Whatever the reason, depression is a real and debilitating condition that can lead to substance abuse and even suicide if it is not treated.

Unfortunately, many depressed people in the world do not seek professional help out of ignorance or because of a lack of mental facilities.

People with depression perform poorly at work, school, suffer in their marriages and at home and end up having no social life.

Depression and anxiety are highly treatable conditions and treatment is highly rewarding.

Having a mental illness is not something to be ashamed of because mental illness knows no class, race or age group.

Everyone of us will suffer a bout of depression in our lives at some time or the other.

If we can’t deal with it, we should not hesitate to seek help.

We are extremely fortunate to live in an age when we have a wide array of good and affordable treatments. Our biggest challenge is to overcome the overwhelming ignorance about this treatable condition because of outdated beliefs.

It is time to abandon groundless beliefs about mental ailments and treat them.

We no longer live in the stone ages.

As we conclude the current financial year, I want acknowledge the outstanding work of the Western Cape Department of Social Development on the ‘Families At Risk’ project. This project seeks to address the needs of families by ensuring that the state’s constitutional and statutory obligations, in terms of Section 28 of the Constitution, are fulfilled.

In South Africa, many families experience instability which increases the likelihood of abuse, neglect, criminality and other risky behaviours in children and adults. Major new legislative provisions have been introduced in South Africa, enabling decisive state intervention in families at risk. However, the state is not yet fully utilising these provisions.

In practical terms, this project identifies and refers children and families at risk through schools, clinics, hospitals and Early Childhood Development (ECDs) centres. It establishes co-operation between the police and local authorities on family law matters including domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and child crime. It makes provision for court processes, alternative care, adoptions, family mediation and planning, parental rights and responsibilities, parenting skills, marriage counselling, reunification services for children in temporarily alternative care and reunification for homeless adults.

This project has been met with great

success. In its first three years of implementation, between 2016/17 and 2018/19, the primary objective was to match the existing legal requirements and the demand for services, whilst prioritising high risk families. Hence, this programme: • Removed 70 children from the streets; • Reduced vacancies in funded Child Youth Care Centres (CYCCs) to 2%; • Cleared court backlogs for child protection cases; • Implemented case monitoring data tracking in DSD’s performance information systems; and • Reduced the backlog in foster orders requiring extensions.

Projects such as these would not enjoy the success that they have without the support of other key stakeholders. Many aspects of this project are inherently transversal, requiring support from the Children’s Court, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, the Office of the Family Advocate, and the Departments of Health and Education. Clearly, we cannot begin to address the many social ills in our country without the by-in of these stakeholders.

Under my leadership, the Western Cape Department of Social Development will continue to work Better Together and address the plight of families at risk to restore tranquillity and calm to those most vulnerable.

This year we are reminded of the important work that lies ahead to ensure that we serve the people of Cape Town with dedication and continuous commitment.

This year, as a Subcouncil I would like to take a hands on approach when it comes to long outstanding issues and target low hanging fruit projects with officials in the City of Cape Town. I would like all councillors to compile a list of any unresolved issues that we as a subcouncil can deal with collectively. We will be holding officials accountable for all service delivery complaints that are not actioned.The City of Cape Town has 26 drop-off sites for garden refuse, builders’ materials and any other items that do not fit into household wheelie bins. These are more than sufficient to ensure the legal and safe disposal of waste. Any person found to be dumping illegally is issued with a Section 56 written notice, which carries a fine of R5 000. The dumper is also liable for an impoundment release fee of R8 426 before they can reclaim their vehicle.I am calling on the community to report illegal dumping to 021 480 7700 from a cell phone or 107 from a landline. We urge residents to help us catch these criminals who are polluting our communities and effectively forcing the City to spend millions of rands each year to clean up their dirty deeds – money that can be spent more effectively on service delivery. The type of behaviour displayed by these offenders is completely unacceptable and is a risk not only to the environment, but also to public health.Subcouncil 18 will soon be embarking on an exercise to determine the uses of our public open spaces and together with the planning and property management departments, determine how best to utilise land which City’s departments are unable to maintain or have no alternate use for in order that we could curtail the amount of dumping on a particular location or set the tone of development on its areas.At the next activity day meeting, our planning department will present the public open spaces in our wards to commence the discussion for the use of such land as I had described in my earlier paragraph.Once again I would like to mention that project steering committees were formed for Wards 67 and 68, we patiently await the progress of a project steering committee being formed for the housing project within Ward 110. Having said this, I would like all Capetonians to know that the City only has one database and only those who are high on the waiting list will qualify for a housing opportunity. There is no shortcut to receiving a house from our database therefore we appeal to all residents not to make any cash payments to any individuals with the promise of receiving a home. It should go without saying that if it is not a ward councillor and city official discussing the housing opportunity and we will not request a deposit for our engagements, the authenticity of what is being promised should be questioned.

‘Adoption will grind to a halt’ with no fees I recently spoke with a concerned adoptive father regarding Sections 249 and 259 of the Amendment Bill for the Children’s Act of 2005 which will ensure that all fees related to the adoptive process are scrapped. The adoptive father shared with me the moving story of how he and his wife came to adopt their daughter. The child is still in the protective care process and her name cannot be shared. However, hers is a story of the hope and opportunity that adoption brings. The young girl’s biological mother had an unplanned pregnancy.

She chose to have her adopted so that she could enjoy the best possible life, which included opportunities for travel and education that she otherwise would not have. The girl’s biological mother chose a life of stability for her daughter with a loving and caring adoptive

family.Understanding the sacrifice of the biological mother, the new adoptive parents have opted to share photos and updates of the child with the biological mother through a social worker. Additionally, the young girl will be able to meet her biological mother once she turns 18-years-old, provided that she chooses to. I was then curious about the inter-cultural aspect of the adoption and asked him, are you as family taking any measures to educate your daughter on her heritage? The adoptive father explained that he and his wife are studying her biological mother’s culture and language and will actively try to raise their daughter in both her biological and adopted cultures. Whilst the adoptive father admitted that adoption is not without difficulty, he explained that he, his wife and his daughter received ample

support from the social workers from their respective private adoption agency and from the adoptive community. There are currently 3.7 million orphaned and vulnerable children in our country, and we can scarcely afford to eliminate another successful form of child protection. By making it illegal to charge fees for adoptive services, we are not only increasing the workload of state social workers, but we are also eliminating an entire industry which not only facilitates the majority of adoptions but also employs countless professionals including private social workers, medical professionals, adoption agencies, psychologists, immigration specialists and many others. In short, adoptions in South Africa will grind to a halt.

‘We need energy justice now’ T

he National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has begun a round of continued public hearings on Eskom’s proposed electricity price hike of 15% for 2019, with a projected overall increase of 45% by 2021.

From Monday 14 January, the Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI) – with faith-based and environmental partners, and the public – presented a variety of compelling arguments at the hearings, opposing the proposal.

A number of communities were represented, including Mitchell’s Plain, Bellville, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha.

Vainola Makan, SAFCEI’s energy justice coordinator, said: “If granted, this price increase will severely impact all electricity consumers across the country, many of whom already struggle to pay their daily bills. Citizens should not have to suffer energy increases every year. It would be far more responsible for Eskom to recover the funds it has lost through mismanagement over many years.”

SAFCEI believes that ethical custodianship of the Earth’s resources is essential to sustainable development, and urges Nersa to operate on a value-based system that places the needs of all citizens at the forefront of its agenda. The NPO further proposes a refocusing of Eskom’s vision, to ensure that it promotes the much-needed shift to clean energy solutions.

Wendy Pekeur, a community leader from Elsenberg in Stellenbosch and founder of the Ubuntu Rural Women and Youth Movement, said: “It was very enlightening to participate in the Nersa hearing. One thing is very clear: Eskom is in deep trouble as a result of accumulating years of debt. And, it seems that since it could always rely on government for a bailout, it has become reckless and negligent.”

Now it wants to recover that money from the consumer. I know too many people who are struggling to keep their heads above water. I can confirm that people are going back to the old ways of paraffin, candles, gas and outside fires, because electricity prices are just too high. That is why we need energy justice now, because electricity provided by the country’s energy supplier should not only be affordable to the rich. Eskom must get its house in order. “(Today) I speak for farmworkers and rural people in my community and around the country, who cannot afford the proposed increase, but are unable to access the Nersa hearings. In one example, the household electricity bill for a retired farmworker’s household comes to more than R1000 per month. This is because the only place he can

buy electricity is from the farmer,” added Pekeur.

Levona Carstens from Tafelsig said: “I am a pensioner and already can’t survive on the social grants provided by the government.

On top of this, electricity prices are already so unaffordable, since we only get a few units per 10 rand. Eskom and Nersa must consider us pensioners. We are struggling to survive.”

Lydia Petersen, another woman from Mitchell’s Plain, who joined with Project 90 by 2030, said: “We are concerned about Eskom’s proposed price increase, because our communities cannot afford it. There is too much poverty as it is, and yet there are no lifelines for the people. This proposed 15% hike will just throw us into further poverty, which we just cannot afford. Communities need to stand together against the powers that be, such as Eskom, and let them know

that enough is enough. We will not enrich the management of Eskom, and the maladministration and misappropriation of funds must come to an end. And we, as communities must stand up.”

Eastridge community leader Ann October represented pensioners, saying Eskom and Nersa must do something.

“What are you going to do, because our people are suffering and cannot afford another tariff hike? After people have paid for electricity and water, which are both already so expensive, they have nothing left.

Now people are turning to loan sharks for help, which is not good. On top of that, we already have to deal with other problems such as drugs and gangsterism in our communities. Why are you not doing more to create jobs for our people? On behalf of my community, we demand 0% increase.”

Joyce Malebu of the Gugulethu Backyarders’ Association said: “I represent mostly the pensioners and the backyard dwellers – those who live in shacks in the yards of houses. Nersa needs to think about the poorest of the poor, who either rely on a very low government grant or who are unemployed with absolutely no income, not even a grant. Where must these people get money for electricity to live?

“We rely on electricity for so many things, but now people must go back to paraffin – which is dangerous and can lead to shack fires.

“How can Nersa, in good faith toward the country’s citizens, grant an increase to Eskom? The people can’t afford it, because electricity is already unaffordable. Those people working at Eskom and Nersa, you’ve got money and earn high salaries. What about those who don’t have any money?” asked Malebu.

Nersa’s public hearings will continue in a number of provinces until Monday 4 February.

G

rowing up in Mitchell’s Plain, Branton Charles had no idea that one day he would be celebrated worldwide.

The father of one, who will be leaving his job as a diesel fitter by the end of this month, has just released his debut single “Closest to Heaven”. The single is being played all over the world in countries like the Netherlands, France and Germany.

After working in Spain for six years, Charles says he decided to return home to concentrate more on his own musical work.

“When I was working overseas I enjoyed it, and the contract I got just set my music career on a whole new level. When I was in Spain I did a tribute show for Michael Jackson and also trained other up-and-coming

musicians,” he says.

Charles knew from the young age of six that he could sing.

“There was an activation at Shoprite next to our house. My brother was making a bit and I started singing. My mother heard the commotion and she came out. People were cheering while I sang and they started throwing money at my feet. When my mother saw what the commotion was all about, she began to cry because she knew I could sing. All the money my brother and I made we gave to my mom to buy more food for the house,” he says.

Now he is back to grow his music in South Africa. Born and bred in Mitchell’s Plain but now a Wynberg resident, Charles says despite the challenges he faced growing up, this never stopped him from dreaming. “I’m the second eldest out of six kids. My mother

Charles adds that with his mother being in an abusive relationship, life was hard.

“We stayed with the neighbours most of the time because my mother was in hospital because of the abuse she got from my father,” he says.

Despite a difficult childhood he says he never stopped dreaming.

“I just new things will be better. I never lost hope. I was raised by a single parent and I always had a dream and hope that one day my music would play on radio.I’m living this dream now and looking forward to growing my music here.”

Results show improvement T

he Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says the 2018 systemic test results have been released to schools and they show a significant improvement.

The tests are conducted each year in grades 3, 6 and 9 and are an important resource for the department as they determine the level of learners’ language and mathematics abilities.

The tests help the department to identify specific areas that need improvement and also assist the schools to improve their outcomes.

“They are also useful tools for schools and educators as they provide specific information on various learning areas,” says provincial minister for education, Debbie Schäfer.

“The 2018 results show a very pleasing, sustained improvement,” she says.

The tests were originally introduced in 2001, however, in 2011, the WCED approached the Centre for Evaluation and Assessment (CEA) to update and evaluate the existing testing instruments to ensure they remain relevant, credible and in line with the curriculum and the changing school system.

Existing results are compared to the baseline of 2011 and the results are as follows: Mathematics: The pass rate for Grade 3 Mathematics improved from 47.2% in 2011 to 56.6% in 2018, an increase of 9.4%. (The percentage pass rate as indicated is based on a pass re-

quirement of 50%.)

“From the tests we were able to pick up that Grade 3 learners are struggling to identify patterns and functions and are struggling with algebra and data handling.

We are therefore able to design interventions to assist the Grade 3 learners in these areas.

Without the systemic tests we would not have been able to identify these weaknesses, which shows why they are so important,” says Schäfer.

“The pass rate for Grade 6 Mathematics showed a sustained increase from 23.4% in 2011 to 42.4% in 2018. This is an increase of an impressive 19%. The Grade 6 results indicate that learners are struggling mostly with identifying space and shapes.

“The pass rate for Grade 9 Mathematics improved from 10.4% in 2011 to 23% in 2018.

Here we managed to identify that learners are struggling with data handling.

“The improvement in maths is most pleasing, given its importance in so many of the skills we need in our country,” says Schäfer.

Language: The language results are generally steady, with increases over the seven years, despite the introduction of more difficult texts, to align them with international benchmarks.

Grade 3 language results increased from 38.7% in 2011 to 45.4% in 2018, an increase of 6.7%.

Record elite start list at triathlon T

en South African triathletes are among the top contenders for the Discovery Triathlon World Cup Cape Town champion.

The event takes place on Sunday 10 February, and officially opens the 2019 International Triathlon Union (ITU) global race calendar. The event is the only ITU race that takes place on African soil. It forms part of the Discovery Get Active Weekend, which sees world-class triathletes competing for world ranking and Olympic qualification points, as well as multi-sport enthusiasts and novices enjoying an exciting day of swimming, cycling and running along the picturesque Atlantic Seaboard and past iconic city landmarks.

ITU is the world governing body for the Olympic sport of triathlon and all related multi-sport disciplines, including duathlon, aquathlon, cross-triathlon and winter triathlon. It was founded in 1989 at the first ITU Congress in Avignon, France.

“The 2019 Discovery Triathlon World Cup Cape Town has attracted a record elite entry field, with many of the world’s top triathletes on the waiting list, hoping to secure a last-minute spot at the start on 10 February.

This is an important event for triathletes hoping to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo,” says event director Gary Marescia.

South African Richard Murray will be back to defend his title and is set to go headto-head with countryman Henri Schoeman, who came second in the 2018 event.

Schoeman became the first South African to win an Olympic medal for triathlon by taking bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and

he recently clinched a gold in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. They are joined in the men’s division by Wian Sullwald, who came second in the 2018 Dakar Africa Triathlon Union (ATU) Sprint Triathlon African Cup in December.

Gillian Sanders, who took second place in the 2018 event, leads the South African women’s pack. She was part of the South African

2018 Commonwealth Games team, and took first place at the 2018 Agadir ATU Triathlon African Cup in November.

She is joined by fellow South Africans Jodie Berry, Shanae Williams, Amper Schlebusch, Simone Ackermann (fourth in 2018), and Anel Radford.

International competitors setting their sights on the podium include Austrian Lu-

kas Pertl (third in 2018) and Stefan Zachäus from Luxembourg who is keen to rise up in the ITU ranking in order to qualify for the 2020 Olympics, as well as Slovakia’s Richard Varga and Russian brothers Dmitry and Igor Polyanskiy.

In the women’s division, Bermuda’s Flora Duffy (2 x world champ and gold medallist in the 2018 Commonwealth Games) and Rachel Klamer from the Netherlands – ITU world ranked eighth and 10th respectively – are laser focused on making their mark in Cape Town.

The race will start at the V&A Waterfront, with the swim leg of the triathlon beginning in Quay 6, before the route takes the athletes past the Green Point precinct and along the scenic Sea Point Promenade before finishing on the Cape Town Stadium forecourt.

Cape Town mayor Dan Plato said: “The City of Cape Town is proud to support and host an event of an international stature as the Discovery Triathlon World Cup. It is one of many exciting sporting spectacles on Cape Town’s events calendar. Not only does the event provide exhilarating entertainment on land and sea, but it also contributes to our efforts of creating opportunities for our residents.We are looking forward to seeing the talent on display and wish all the athletes and spectators a wonderful event.”

In addition to hosting the world’s best, the event also attracts almost 2000 recreational triathletes.

Elfindale-based St Augustine Cricket Club “Saints” had a fresh start with their first win in the Blue Bells annual Super Strikers Tournament, held at Wynberg Boys’ High School, on Sunday 13 January.

The u.15 team beat the Hub Cricket Club with 65 runs to 62 in the final after winning all five of their matches in this one-day tournament.

The players attributed their achievement to commitment, good preparation and obedience as they followed their coach’s advice throughout the game.

Saints had been preparing for the tournament since November last year, and the win has given them hope for a better year as they seek to win their upcoming matches. Jordan Nel, the captain, says it is through their good performance that they will be able to represent their schools at a higher level.

“We trained quite a bit and had club

games during November and December. If we keep working hard and focus on cricket, we can achieve the same results and be able to represent our schools and club to the best of our abilities.”

Another player, Yaaseen Moos, thanked his teammates for a job well done and said although they cannot win every game he knows they can keep improving.

Players come from different schools in the southern suburbs. The other members who made the sixes team were Matthew Jacobs, Joel Andrews, Nicholas van Schalkwyk and Tawfiq Bothat.

Coach Salvador Nel added that their performance “was extremely pleasing as it was challenging”.

“Competing in a one-day tournament comes with its own pressures. As for the final, it was a gripping final played by two high-quality teams. The Hub immediately put us under pressure with overall Player of the Tournament starting the run chase with a six and a four. But our boys held their nerve.”

Double ton for Moos EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt The cricket summer is in full swing for Kenwyn resident Yaaseen Moos.

The 13-year-old, who attends Wynberg Boys’ High School and belongs to St Augustine’s Cricket Club, scored a swashbuckling 203 not out against Groote Schuur High in an u.15 game on Thursday 18 January. His double century, which included eight sixes and 29 boundaries, was scored off just 86 balls. Yaaseen captained the WP u.13B team last year and has already scored five centuries for his school and club respectively. His best bowling figures are six wickets for 16 runs off five overs.

“I was four-years-old when my dad took me to my first mini

cricket match. I did not have any cricket whites yet and wore casual clothing during the match. It was so much fun,” says the Yaaseen.

He says he relishes the challenge which comes with facing a skilled bowler where he has to work out a plan of attack while defending his prized wicket, comparing it to a game of chess which plays itself out in the middle.

“I enjoy batting because it depends on hand and eye coordination and balance while playing a shot. It has taught me to have more patience and not to rush things,” says Yaaseen.

When he thinks back to his recent double-century, Yaaseen says the hard work he has put in is paying off richly, while he is already setting his sights on a

brighter cricketing future.

“To see the hard work materialise into results inspires me to continue working harder. Currently I’m playing u.14A for Wynberg Boys’ High School and some day I would like to play first team for my school. It would be a dream come true to be selected for SA u.19 which would open doors for entry into the Cobras Cubs side.

From there I would love to represent my country,” he says.

He adds that he hopes those with whom he shares a love for the game of cricket will continue to enjoy the game, while also playing with passion.

“Always give your best. I would also relay a quote my dad always uses to encourage me: Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”

Yaaseen Moos scored a sensational 203 not out against Groote Schuur High in an u.15 game on Thursday 18 January.

ith the FNB Varsity Cup only a week away, the tournament sees new skippers taking the reins of their sides, hoping to take the title.

The tournament kicks off with the newly promoted UWC taking on UCT in the battle for Cape Town, while Maties’ first game will be against Johannesburg challengers Wits at the Danie Craven Stadium.

UJ will take on last year’s finalists NWU at the UJ Stadium in Johannesburg. CUT, which narrowly escaped relegation last year, will journey to the capital to take on UP-Tuks, with the Stripe Generation looking to start with a bang after a disappointing 2018 campaign.Local varsities will be captained by Kuyenzeka Nama Xaba (UCT), Adrian Paarwater (UWC) and Johan Momsen (Maties).

Maties were near-invincible last

season, going undefeated and only drawing two games, to Wits and NWU respectively. Defending champions’ captain Johan Momsen is very relaxed going into the season with his current charges, despite the giant shoes to fill.

“We don’t really experience the status as defending champions as pressure. We have the experience with many of the players from last year still in the squad and even some of the young guns who also won their title in our team. So we have players that know how to win.”

Momsen, who replaces Niel “Chippy” Oelofse, trusts in his side’s structures and coach going into the new season.

“We will trust the process like we did last year and even though we haven’t made big changes, Coach Hawies (Fourie) believes in changing before the need to

change. The players have been working hard all pre-season and they look strong and fit. The vibe is awesome, and it is great to be part of the squad.”

UCT Ikeys’ new skipper Nama Xaba is grateful for the opportunity to lead the Cape Town side and wants to do justice to UCT’s Varsity Cup legacy.

“I must say that I am very grateful to the Lord for giving me such a task, and just thankful for the belief from UCT Ikeys, to give me such a prestigious responsibility.

“I think any person would be nervous for what lies ahead but it’s certainly not fear – it’s more about feeling overwhelmed by the legacy set before us in this club and having to leave it in a better place. I also feel that there’s so many leaders in this club that have been and are continually supporting me which makes things easier.”

The loose forward is confident going into the new season because of the strong experience and calibre of the players around him.

“We have pretty much had the same spine with regard to the team for these past two seasons, so there’s calmness and experience in

the side and we really feel that this is the year that we’ll click the best and play UCT rugby.”
