FEEL GOOD FRAGRANCES

We’re all in need of a little TLC and treating ourselves with a touch of kindness from time to time. Here at Perfume Society HQ, we decided with this Feel Good Fragrances Discovery Box to curate a special box of fragrance to help everyone achieve a better sense of equilibrium. We’ve brought together fragrances that have been purposely designed to induce a sense of calm and help cope with all life has to throw at us, perfumes for grounding us in natural surroundings, and there are also scents for boosting inner strength. We have also included a sleep balm to aid rest and a body butter for nourishing skin for an all-round mind, body and soul enhancing experience...

COCHINE TUBEROSE & WILD FIG COCHINE TUBEROSE & WILD FIG

FRAGRANCE FAMILY: FLORAL FRESH

TOP NOTES: bergamot, lemon, galbanum

HEART NOTES: wild fig, tuberose, jasmine, cyclamen

BASE NOTES: cedarwood, vetiver, musk

Balance and harmony are very much in mind with this fragrance: woody, with a taste of juicy fruits, fresh with a splash of cream. An initial burst of reviving citrus notes gently melts into white florals of tuberose and night-flowering jasmine. The galbanum is cool against the warm fig. A sophisticated base of enveloping cedarwood and earthy vetiver and a touch of musk cradles everything into a delicate, enduring feminine fragrance. All subtly blended so that the bergamot on top and earthy base all work seamlessly with the floral heart centring you in the moment.

Taking inspiration from the flora and classical French architecture of Saigon, Cochine founder Kate Crofton-Atkins’ aim was to reproduce the city in fragrant form. Painstakingly trialling essential oils in various combinations to capture the character of her adopted home took a great deal of time and effort. But the results have been so worthwhile. Kate has given us the ability to be instantly transported to a romantic evening on a faraway continent where the scent of tropical flowers drift on a gentle breeze and moonlight sparkles across rippling water.

ELECTIMUSS MERCURIAL CASHMERE

FRAGRANCE FAMILY: AMBRÉE WOODY

TOP NOTES: madagascan pink pepper, cardamom, italian bergamot

HEART NOTES: grey amber, tuberose, violet, iris

BASE NOTES: oud, musk, tonka beans, vanilla, caramel, cashmere wood, cedarwood from virginia

ELECTIMUSS MERCURIAL CASHMERE

Electimuss say this fragrance is dark, smoky and sensual and we here at PSHQ agree, but there is also a soft, powderiness to it too. Underneath the piquant pepper and cardamom, is the warm, creamy tones of amber and tuberose along with pillowy, lipstick-y violet and iris. As the fragrance develops the tonka beans, vanilla and caramel bring a sweetness, but it’s tempered by the animalic musk and musty oud. It’s all snuggly and cuddly and comforting, but this capricious scent has a darker side. In the smokier notes of cashmere wood and cedarwood lies a different personality: carnal, passionate, hedonistic. Which mood will you find?

Part of Electimuss’ Nero Collection, inspired by the unashamedly decadent emperor, this fragrance tells the story of Mercury. God of communication and travel, but also patron of thieves, Mercury was intelligent, charming, fickle and tricksy. And perfumer Sofia Bardelli has captured all those contrary characteristics in a delightful concoction. ‘Perfume? Its magic is transmitting emotions and telling stories.’ she says. This tale is told in the sweet and spicy, but smoothly seductive scent. That story is continued through the heavy glass flacons, resembling the columns of Roman architecture, with shields on the front and embossed lids highlighting the Roman pedigree.

ELEMENTALS

TONG REN

ELEMENTALS TONG REN

FRAGRANCE FAMILY: AMBRÉE WOODY

TOP NOTES: blood orange, blue ginger, timut pepper, yuzu

HEART NOTES: champaca absolute, egyptian jasmine absolute, osmanthus absolute

BASE NOTES: benzoin, black tea, oakmoss, vanilla cedarwood from virginia

Summing up Tong Ren in a couple of words could be done with ‘integration or unity’. Elementals have cleverly crafted a fine fragrance by integrating all-natural ingredients into a divine floral scent. Vibrant citrus-y, but at the same time bitter notes, of blood orange and yuzu open up to reveal a milky heart of jasmine and osmanthus. Champaca is another heady floral that brings a warmth to the perfume. Benzoin and vanilla in the base are also nurturing notes. The slightly bitter oakmoss adds another dimension to the base without detracting from the unity of the light and elegant whole.

Elementals is the creation of Feng Shui and Chinese Horoscope Master Deana Wyland-Fries. Ten years of research and development went into producing an artistic fragrance in line with the Theory of the Five Elements and designed to balance body, mind and soul. Working with perfumer Alexandre Helwani, Deana has drawn on the wisdom of the I Ching and the mystical powers of the crane, which sits atop the bottle. Deana says ‘When I read this passage in the I Ching, I knew I needed to create something unique and I knew it needed to be a new kind of collaboration to honour the ancient text of Tong Ren.’

MAISON CRIVELLI AMBRE CHROMATIQUE

FRAGRANCE FAMILY: WOODY SPICY

TOP NOTES: incense, pink peppercorn

HEART NOTES: davana, osmanthus

BASE NOTES: benzoin, bourbon vanilla, amber

MAISON CRIVELLI AMBRE CHROMATIQUE

Confounding the expected with their scents, Quentin Bisch conjures for Maison Crivelli the element of surprise from notes we thought we knew well. Here, the traditional amber accord is shot through with a sheerness; it drapes rather than clings. Transparent wisps of incense are dotted with pink peppercorn and davana, the fuzzy apricot skin of osmanthus is licked by vanilla bourbon; while perfect for autumn, it would work at any time without overpowering.

All Maison Crivelli fragrances are inspired by travel, and Ambre Chromatique envisages a trek through a jungle. Perhaps the sheer amber is the dappled sunlight under the lofty canopy and the pops of pink peppercorn the brightly coloured flowers beneath. However this fragrance resonates with you, brand founder Thibaud Crivelli’s principles include slow living and a deep respect for nature. It’s this connection with nature, grounding us, whilst retaining a lightness that makes this a fragrance to truly make you ‘feel good’.

RUTH MASTENBROEK GAIA

FRAGRANCE FAMILY: WOODY

TOP NOTES: bergamot, rosemary

HEART NOTES: chamomile, rosewood, green tea

BASE NOTES: tonka bean, vetiver, white musks

RUTH MASTENBROEK GAIA

Gaia, Ruth tells us, ‘roams the moors of the Norfolk broads in Zen-like tranquillity. In carefree contentment, Gaia enjoys the moment, sipping on the calming nectar of chamomile.’ To wit, at the heart of the fragrance is a chamomile oil sourced from a farming family in Norfolk, its inclusion lending a sense of peace and stillness to one of three fresh-in-every-way eau de toilettes proudly showcasing essential oils grown and distilled in the UK.

Often used in infusions, many claims are made about the benefits of chamomile including reducing inflammation and helping sleep. True or not, it has been conjured into a beautiful fragrance. Freshness from bergamot and a brightness from green tea combined with rosemary – a symbol of love and friendship – add a liveliness. Green and woody notes come from rosewood, vetiver and white musks. The whole is reminiscent of standing in glorious, wide-open countryside breathing it all in.

SARAH BAKER LOUDO

FRAGRANCE FAMILY: WOODY

TOP NOTES: cherry, bergamot, neroli, petitgrain

HEART NOTES: cypriol oil, nagarmotha, white chocolate, orange blossom

BASE NOTES: Laotian oud, agarwood, amber, vanilla, musk

Just as with food, certain fragrances can wrap us in a security blanket and make us feel like everything’s going to be ok – and nothing achieves that quite like sweet, sticky chocolate – which is one of the starring notes in Loudo. Combined with the richness of the cherry and the warming vanilla and woody notes of oud and agarwood takes this from a ‘naughty, but nice’ indulgence, to a flirty, mischievous tease. This scent is about making you feel comfortable in your own skin.

This is the ninth fragrance in Sarah Baker’s extrait parfum collection. Each unisex scent relates a story, evoking memories. In Loudo’s case – a play on ‘oud’ and ‘ludo’, the Latin for ‘to play’, opens with the innocence of childhood portrayed through the cherry, orange notes and chocolate of treats of earliest recollections. A wooden game or chest depicted by Laotian oud and agarwood moves through youth until the full development of sensuality on the dry down.
