how it’s going to smell or if it’s for ‘you’. First, take the book of blotters we’ve provided you with in the box, and write the name of each of the fragrances on them (don’t think you’ll remember later which is which – we can tell you from experience: you won’t.) Now spray the fragrance onto its relevant blotter and a couple of minutes or so for the scent to settle. Pick one at random and take a good, long whiff and, while you do, think about the images that immediately spring to mind, without thinking if it’s more ‘male’ or ‘female’. Try some on your skin, too, and apply the same logic.

SHARE AND SHARE ALIKE… Over the past decade, there has been an olfactory evolution. It began with smaller, niche houses refusing to gender their fragrances and has filtered through to more mainstream names marketing their scents as ‘unisex’, ‘gender free’, ‘genderless’ or ‘shared’. And we live, of course, in a time when gender is being blurred anyway – and everything, more than ever before, comes down to personal choice. So: cast aside your preconceptions and smell our carefully curated selection with an open mind (and nose!) Because there’s a whole world of fragrant wonders out there just waiting for you to explore, and as they say, ‘sharing is caring…’ Here’s how to get the most out of your Sharing Collection... Try ‘smelling blind’. This doesn’t mean getting the blindfolds out, but rather, coming to a fragrance without preconceptions of

2

Genuinely share the samples with a friend of the opposite sex. (Or a transgender friend.) Have a ‘scent sniffing evening’ and see what they think (without telling them the name or notes of the fragrance). Assess how the fragrance smells on your friend/partner’s skin. Notes will be expressed differently on different individuals. Some people draw out the deeper base notes, while the same scent can smell quite floral on someone else. Body chemistry and hormones all play a part here – which is one of the reasons that perfumes, quite wonderfully, smell unique on each of us. Don’t be afraid to layer with another scent that has contrasting notes. If you do feel one is too overtly ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’ for your personal taste, you can temper the effect on the skin. Too sweet? Layer it with a fresh, citrus style. Too fresh or woody? Try with a creamy or powdery scent. Allow yourself to experiment and have fun! We think you’ll be surprised how many compliments you get when you dare to wear something different.

or thousands of years, fragrance was entirely gender-neutral. So in a way, perfume is now returning to its roots: a blurring of the lines between the sexes is certainly something we’re seeing/smelling a great deal of, via many of the fragrances landing on our desks. They turn on their head the wisdom of what is in reality just a century in perfume’s history: that (for instance) women are more drawn to florals, while men traditionally like woods. In reality, those of us at The Perfume Society HQ have always chosen scents based purely on whether we love them or not. It’s about focusing on what’s in the bottle – rather than pre-judging who might fall for a particular alchemy of ingredients. So we’re delighted to offer you a tantalising ‘shareable’ selection in this Discovery Box – from the smouldering Atelier des Ors Lune Féline and the elegant sophistication of Eight & Bob Egypt through to Cologne-style offerings in the form of zestily uplifting Goldfield Banks Bohemian Lime and Goutal Eau d’Hadrien Eau de Parfum, a classic that everyone needs to wear, at some point in their life. We are proud to share ocean-breezy BDK Sel d’Argent and fascinating woody-aromatic Rehab Initio. Also making waves in fragrance circles are rising British scent stars whose creations we introduce you to, here: Vines House Parfum, who set out tell stories in scented form – in this box we have Heroic Story and Voyage Story – together with Rook Perfumes‘ seductively, darkly mysterious Undergrowth. And welcome Kingdom Scotland, whose just-launched Kingdom Botanica was created to celebrate the 350th anniversary of Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens, showcasing its plant treasures in the most fabulously fragrant way. You’ll find two eminently shareable (or borrowable) ‘treats’ in your box, too: Dr Salts+ 100% Dead Sea Bath Salts Muscle Therapy – perfect after sport, or enthusiastic seasonal gardening binges – and Kind Natured Cooling Leg & Foot Gel, which delivers a sense of putting your feet up, as if by magic. Whether you call them ‘genderless’, ‘unisex’ or ‘shared’, all the products that we’ve hand-picked for this box smell just plain fabulous. (And it’s entirely up to you, of course, whether you let anyone else get their hands – or perhaps wrists – on them.) Meanwhile, enjoy…

educing from the very first spritz, this fragrance has an immediate ethereal stardust-y glow about it, inspired by the brilliance of the moon and stars lighting up the night sky. Magnetic is a word often used to describe scent, but in this instance it is pleasingly accurate – the combination of ambergris, musk, styrax and vanilla give Lune Féline a heady, seductive, animalic quality that feels like it has the full force of the moon’s gravitational pull behind it. And if this sounds intense, that’s because it is. This perfume is for lovers of all-consuming scents that enchant, that spellbind, and that sweep you well and truly off your feet. The perfume house Atelier des Ors, after all, doesn’t do things by half. Every ingredient is carefully sourced, every fragrance expertly crafted, and nothing less than purest gold is its mascot – quite literally, as each of the fragrances in its collection contain little flecks of 24kt gold within the full-size flacons. This flourish pays tribute to the enduring, magical, mystical nature of gold, which has become a byword for all things luxurious, while also illustrating the supreme preciousness of what is within each beautiful bottle.

unlight dancing on the surface of the sea, glittering and glistening and prompting reveries is where this fragrance takes us to. Part of BDK’s Collection Azur, this scent captures everything that its name suggests – azure, crystalline waters, silver-lined horizons, and that wonderful salty-haired feeling after a day spent at the beach, preferably on the French Riviera or the rocky coastline of Corsica. As freshness segues to sun-kissed florals and then to a skin-warmed accord, we can’t help but think of balmy evening strolls along the promenade, people-watching the impeccably dressed visitors and enjoying the carefree slowness so specific to late summer in the Med. BDK is a perfume house born out of its creator’s love of not only perfume, but more specifically perfume’s relationship with Paris. The grandparents of founder David Benedek – the name BDK is an abbreviation of the family’s surname – had distributed fragrance after moving to Paris from Romania. It was a fascinating and intoxicating world with which to become involved. Decades later, bitten by the bug at the tender age of 25, their grandson would go into fragrance creation, dreaming up the beautifully artisanal yet modern perfumes that we experience from BDK today.

arm and vibrant spices; aromatic florals; the freshest citrus fruits; incense-y woods. These are all smells that greeted perfumer (and Eight & Bob founder) Albert Fouquet as he arrived in Egypt to visit a childhood friend. But so profound was the effect that these scents had on Fouquet, he couldn’t leave them behind, eventually returning to re-experience them, capture them and ultimately distil them into this evocative fragrance. And since Egypt is, of course, widely considered the birthplace of fragrance, is it any wonder that the destination inspired such a reaction in Fouquet? He fell under the country’s enchanting olfactory spell, and anyone who experiences this fragrance is, we think, sure to follow. The spellbinding stories of human relationships – often struck up through travel – are, in fact, the foundations of this brand. Legend has it that, after a chance encounter between Fouquet and John F. Kennedy on the French Riviera in 1937, the pair hit it off. The next morning, at JFK’s request, Fouquet left a bottle of the cologne JFK had been admiring at the latter’s hotel with a note reading: ‘In this bottle you will find the dash of French glamour that your American personality lacks.’ JFK saw the funny side, enjoyed and shared the gift, and the rest is history.

ree-spirited, sunny, optimistic, tropical: we’re talking about Australia’s Byron Bay here, but could just as easily be describing this fragrance, because Goldfield & Banks have a talent for capturing the sprit and vibe of a destination and distilling it into olfactory form. In this scent, tangy and unusual Australian finger lime gives a quirky edge to what is an otherwise classic freshbotanical opening – an immediate breath of fresh air. This segues into a mellow and seriously chilled-out heart accord of vetiver and warm, dry woods, supported by a base humming with boho-beloved patchouli, instantly evocative of balmy nights in the open air, travelling, and giving oneself up to the wonders of the universe. There is an authenticity to Goldfield & Banks creations that we feel echoes that of Australia and its people; the brand’s purpose – to capture and convey the very best of its homeland – is palpable in its perfumes. And this is in no small part thanks to the fact that these guys seek out the most rare and unexplored essences and oils in perfumery, in their purest forms, for all their formulations. Indeed, some of Goldfield & Banks’s fragrances are limited to small runs because of the rarity of the ingredients. Adore.

ensorially speaking, we’d almost go as far as to say that this fragrance can make up for summer 2020’s lost Mediterranean holidays. Yes, that’s a bold statement – but then Eau d’Hadrien is an utterly transportive perfume; one whiff and no longer are you on a campsite in Norfolk; you are, in fact, in Italy. The sparkling, optimistic, joy-filled citrus burst that opens this fragrance instantly whisks you off to a Tuscan villa surrounded by lemon groves. On this villa’s terrace you recline in a sun lounger, dipping in and out of a novel (Memoires d’Hadrien being the book which inspired the scent), with aromatic cypress trees gently rustling overhead, offering dappled shade from the morning sunshine. As the day evolves, delicious herbs, berries, creamy florals and sun-baked, resinous woods unfurl from this fragrance, plunging you ever deeper into its olfactive fantasy… it’s no wonder that this – Goutal’s very first fragrance – remains one of their bestsellers.

The thing with Goutal is that the perfumes are, and have always been, made with love and passion, which is something we think you can sense immediately in a fragrance. magine, for a moment, that you’ve never before smelled a perfume. Then imagine what that first exposure to a fragrance would feel like – the rapturous pleasure, the sensory overload, the emotions that this fragrance might elicit. This is what Initio has set out to to do with Rehab – a perfume from its Hedonist Collection, which is carefully constructed with the most sublime ingredients to draw out real and raw reactions from its wearers. Energising spices grab your attention here, alerting you to comforting vanilla and lavender juxtaposed with evocative tobacco and dreamy patchouli. The combination makes for an olfactory cocktail that feels at once new but familiar; real but fantastical; universal and yet entirely yours. This deftness with contrasts is something Initio does beautifully. The fragrance house believes in unlocking the scientific alchemy of fragrance – specifically its ability to trigger biological responses – but also in its endless, unknowable, mystical power. Beyond that, we know little of this French fragrance house – both the brand and its artistic director, known only as Sonia, prefer to remain enigmatically mysterious. Which, of course, only makes us like them more.

efore you read another word, just glance back at the notes contained in this fragrance. To say that you are about to experience the sensory pleasure of entering a botanical garden without leaving your chair is an understatement; this fragrance is, frankly, an extraordinary feat of perfume-making that was two years in the making. A symphony of over 35 natural ingredients inspired by (and marking) 350 years of Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens, we hardly know where to begin (the words ‘child’ and ‘sweet shop’ spring to mind).

SMELLING NOT ES:

Juicy, succulent fruit groves and orchards greet us at first sniff, all optimism and laughter. These lead us by the hand – or perhaps the nose – to resinous tree-lined avenues and the promise of adventure, preparing us for the floral explosion to come, cleverly tempered in the dry-down with spices, flowing into woods, wonder, and warmth.

What dominates for you, if anything – the florals, fruits, resins or spices?

This bio-diverse fragrance is a fitting tribute to the Edinburgh’s ‘Botanics’ (as they’re fondly known to so many); the team there invited Scotland’s first luxury fragrance house to partner on this landmark project, allowing Kingdom Scotland’s dynamic founder Imogen Russon-Taylor access to their archives and living plant collection. When creating her perfume house, Imogen adapted what she had learned about distillation and aromatic, sensory pleasure from a career in Scotch whisky to perfumery, researching the country’s unique geology and history as a starting point for all of her fragrance creations.

ROOK PERFUMES UNDERGROW TH

o say that this fragrance is visceral would be an understatement. Imagine: it has been raining most of the day but finally the sun breaks through the clouds and its welcome rays begin to dry out the pavements, soil, leaves. The scent that you would then smell when, say, gathering some mint from a still-damp garden is precisely what Rook’s creator, Nadeem Crowe, has captured in this fragrance. Ultra-fresh, earthy, herbaceous and verdant – while also having lashing of warmth to come if you stick around long enough – we think this scent is a triumph of originality and one that you must continue returning to as it unpredictably evolves. The unique and mercurial character of this (and, in fact, all) Rook scents is arguably a mirror reflection of the creator. During his medical school training, Crowe took a detour via LAMDA (yes, that’s LAMDA the acting school), only to return to UCL to complete his medical degree. Today he practises emergency medicine, occasionally (casually) stars in West End shows like ‘School of Rock’ and, of course, creates perfumes – three facets of his life that he believes have more in common that you might at first think.

inging with positivity, this scent is extraordinarily clever in the way that it taps into our sense of smell to transform our mindset. One whiff of its robust, aromatic, energy-filled heart accord (not to mention the self-assured dry- down), and you can’t help but want to walk a little taller, smile a little more, and allow an inner confidence to shine through. Fittingly, Heroic Story was inspired by the ambition, drive, and unwavering work ethic of women and men who have been empowered to achieved great things by remaining true to themselves, never losing site of their goals, and going after them with tenacity and integrity. How very finger-onthe-pulse is that…? Rebecca Harrison, founder of Vines House Parfum, anchors all her fragrance creations to a personal experience. In fact the brand itself was born (only last year) out of her lifelong fascination with fragrance, its emotional associations, and the positive power this can wield. We think this, in turn, makes each perfume feel extremely authentic, carefully considered, and thoughtfully executed. Add to that excellent sustainability, vegan, and cruelty-free credentials, and VHP is a perfume house to watch.

hhh, a sip of refreshing and fragrant Earl Grey enjoyed in the dappled shade of a country garden in late summer; a sense of the crisp sweetness of ripe apples ready to fall in the neighbouring orchard – the opening of this perfume instantly places us in the most charming, quintessentially English setting. But not for long. As the fragrance unfurls, we go further afield: chic and delicate jasmine takes us to the south of France; powdery iris to Tuscany; mystical oudh and amber to the middle east; while patchouli brings a general sense of free-spirited nomadic-ness to the mix.
