All-School Theme

The Cosmos T

he 8th grade unveiled with flair last year’s theme—The Cosmos—with an entertaining, original skit that involved intricate step dancing, star-inspired poetry, and multi-century time travel. Afterwards students headed out to the yard to explore the night sky in planetariums designed and built by a team of 8th graders. Teachers began planning the theme last spring, and their planning resulted in lots of exciting cosmos-related activities throughout the school year. The entire faculty and student body read Stephen and Lucy Hawking’s George’s Secret Key to the Universe. Another highlight of the theme study was a “morning at the Franklin Institute”—when family circles headed off for a shared experience at the science museum. The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education partnered with us and hosted a star-themed festival in December. Activities included a twilight walk, a bonfire, s’mores under the stars, and a telescope for a closer look at the night sky. The Franklin Institute’s chief astronomer, Derrick Pitts, concluded the evening with a talk about the wonders of a starry night.

September 2015 Dear TPS Community, We are pleased to share the 2014–15 Philadelphia School Annual Report and celebrate the time, treasure, and talent that abound here at TPS. As partners, donors, and friends, we thank you for your enthusiasm, active participation, and belief in our mission. Through your contributions and help, we achieved the following milestones: The Philadelphia School Fund exceeded $286,000 Record participation from the board (100%), faculty and staff (99%) and parents (75%) More than $500,000 raised for financial aid through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) Net proceeds from EATS generated over of $86,000 for financial aid, program, and Fund-a-Summer Fellowship

Our extraordinary community members worked enthusiastically to drive our mission forward by engaging students and families in joyful learning both inside and outside of the classroom. As makers, innovators, and architects, we were are on the move and, because of your generosity, were able to carry major initiatives forward: • We expanded our Seed to Table program and focused on the expansion of our loose parts garden to create an outdoor extension of our Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms. • Our students spent meaningful hours at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education (SCEE) and visited over 26 destinations as part of our commitment to our City Country Classroom

• Faculty and staff participated in a Mindfulness Pilot Program facilitated by Jenny Mills of Roots and Wings and the University of Pennsylvania. This six month initiative was well received by all and we look forward to continuing the partnership and incorporating this work into the classroom. • TPSA and TPS partnered on a very successful Progressive Talks series that included faculty-led Growth Mindset conversations, an Author & Speaker series, and family gatherings. • Together, the board and TPS held the second “Annual Unmeeting” in May. As a community, we gathered to share board work, programmatic highlights, and a beautiful video, What Makes TPS…TPS?, created by trustee and parent, Glenn Holsten. • Teams have worked on reimagining our space at TPS. We have introduced two LEGO walls, The Artists’ Alley, and a redesign of the Middle school space. Together we work to ensure that our future leaders of tomorrow are ready to be the change that we want to see. We appreciate everything you do to make The Philadelphia School such a wonderful and joyful place of learning and discovery for all. Thank you for your help in making this an exceptional year!

Warmly, Justine Hoffman Head of School

o s o l i h P & n Missio Mission The Philadelphia School is a coeducational, nonsectarian independent school educating children from preschool through eighth grade. Our mission, as a progressive school and vibrant learning community, is to educate the character and intellect of children. We want our students to become engaged citizens who are critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, and lifelong learners.

Philosophy The Philadelphia School’s progressive approach to learning addresses developmental issues: how a child grows intellectually, creatively, emotionally, socially, morally, and physically. New research about child development, teaching, and learning is regularly incorporated into the school curriculum. Our diverse community of learners fosters critical thinking, love of learning, and enthusiasm for meaningful work. We seek to nurture each student’s sense of personal integrity, care for others, and respect for individuality. Through our commitment to learning in the city, country, and classroom, we affirm our founders’ goal of educating students to be thoughtful, responsible, and active stewards of the urban and natural environments. The Philadelphia School’s vigorous, theme-based academic program prepares students for a lifetime of learning and community involvement.

From the Board President

Board of Trustees 2014–15 Gina Moore, President

Dear TPS family, The 2014–15 school year proved another high mark in The Philadelphia School’s history. The Board, faculty, and administration worked collaboratively in customary and innovative ways to achieve the highest levels of both curricular and financial fitness that exceeded our expectations! From preschool through eighth grade, TPS is committed to nurturing confident, compassionate, global citizens with a passion for learning. Part of our ongoing work is to ensure the resources are in place to support the heart of our program—our amazing teachers and a fertile, progressive learning environment. As such, it was a stellar year for involvement in TPS’ giving opportunities. The Philadelphia School Fund saw record participation across our entire community; The Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit program and the Educational Improvement Tax Credit provided significant dollars toward future scholarships, and the success of EATS and other fundraising events gave us the chance to build community and contribute in a way that enriches the total school experience for our children and generations to come. Thank you for all you do to support TPS— onward and upward! Let’s make it another banner year!

n every classroom, out at the Schuylkill Center, on field trips, in performance venues—this year’s educational program once again was extraordinary. Our teachers— creative, intellectual, and professional forces of nature—gave 100% plus of their compassion, energy, and talent to our students and families. From the bug study in preschool, to the drama unit in kindergarten, to the neighborhood interviews in primary unit, to the Langston Hughes unit in third grade, to the Silk Routes study in the Junior unit, to the Create Your Own Country project in 6th grade, to the zebrafish labs in 7th grade, and to the Shakespeare Festival in 8th—our curricula comprised compelling, thought-provoking hands-on activities.

e have extended our country classroom into the city for our preschoolers and kindergarteners through the lush organic garden on our South Street property. The Garden puts the natural world at our preschoolers and kindergarteners fingertips by providing a living laboratory. They plant seeds, pull weeds, water vegetables, observe butterflies, and dig for worms. These activities provide a rich context for exploring science, nutrition, social studies, math, language arts, while creating a sense of responsibility and service to other living things. After harvesting their crop, students prepare, serve, and eat the food. For our city kids to experience food this way, up close and personal, is an eye-opening opportunity to explore the growing and the eating ends of our food chain.
