Annual Report 2016–17
BE BOLD. BE STRONG. BE ENGAGED.
MISSION The Philadelphia School educates children for a future that is impossible to know but not impossible to shape.
L E A R N H E R E. . E R E H W Y N A O G VISION The Philadelphia School’s progressive approach to learning and teaching has deep thinking, innovation, and agency as its guiding values. We encourage children to explore and push the boundaries of possibility to fulfill their intellectual, social, and civic potential. We approach learning through inquiry, projects, and community. Core values and new research inform the school’s program and pedagogical practices. Our interdisciplinary, theme-based approach prepares students to build a stronger and more inclusive school, community, and society for today and tomorrow. As an urban, preschool–8th grade school, we address specifically how young students develop intellectually, creatively, emotionally, socially, and physically. Through our commitment to diversity, we seek to nurture each student’s moral compass, sense of personal integrity, and respect for individuality. Learning in the city, country, and classroom affirms our founders’ goal of educating children to become responsible and active stewards of the urban and natural environments.

DEAR TPS , Y T I N U M COM The Philadelphia School educates children for a future that is impossible to know but not impossible to shape. Learn here. Go anywhere.”
e are pleased to share the 2016–17 Philadelphia School Annual Report. It was a year of many accomplishments as well as some transitions. We completed our strategic planning process, were reaccredited by PAIS for 10 more years, and we said good-bye to Justine Hoffman, our head of school for the last four years. As partners, donors, and community members we thank you for the many ways you supported TPS throughout the year. Your time and generous contributions helped us achieve the following funding milestones:
4 The Philadelphia School Fund exceeded $372,000 e raised more than $328,000 for financial aid through the 4W
Education Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC).
ATS grossed over $190,000 in support of financial aid 4E
and programming.
Additionally, funds from the Sandra Dean Summer Fellowship Program allowed Aaron Picht to travel Iceland and visit with the Jasper String Ensemble and Ashley Opalka to study Shakespeare and Latin in England and Italy. In addition to helping grow the school’s ability to financially support both students and faculty, you also participated in the school’s learning opportunities, such as our 8th grade Monthly Constitutionals and Middle School Intensives, as well as our strategic planning process.
2
Last spring Framing the Future, our new strategic plan, was adopted. This was a multi-year, multi-constituency process. The guiding questions were who are we as a progressive school in the city of Philadelphia and how do we offer our students an education that helps them explore who they are as learners, social activists, and engaged human beings. As a result of this work, a new succinct mission and educational vision statement were created to capture the innovative, evolving and progressive stance that exemplifies a TPS education. The Philadelphia School educates children for a future that is impossible to know but not impossible to shape. Learn here. Go anywhere. It does indeed take a village to run and sustain an equitable school with such a distinct purpose and to continually offer our students and faculty rich, diverse, and robust educational experiences. Your contributions allowed teachers to learn and deepen their professional practices, students to learn from you as outside experts, and the school to think more generatively about its future. With moorings tied deeply to our past and supported by your current generosity, we are poised to move forward in this fast-paced world with connection, focus, and agency.
BE BOLD. BE STRONG. BE ENGAGED. With deep appreciation to be on this journey together,
Carlye Nelson-Major, Interim Head of School

DEAR TPS FAMILY, remember so vividly my oldest daughter’s first day at TPS. Ava and I walked into the preschool together, her hand clasped firmly in mine. Within minutes Ava was off playing with her new classmates, and I was sitting in a tiny preschool chair with all the other first-time parents whose kids were ready for them to leave sooner than they were! So many memorable moments have followed. Friendships blooming like the chicks hatching in the Primary Unit, third graders finding their voice as they write and perform an original play on immigration, sixth graders marching off confidently for an overnight in the woods and eighth graders stretching their minds through the eighth grade paper, Shakespeare and travel to DC and abroad. Each year has brought memorable capstone experiences that have taught my children and their classmates in creative and transformative ways. Each year I have thought, “This was their best year.” And then it gets better the next. I’m fortunate to have had two daughters complete their TPS education and move on to high school. Looking back, I see the arc of their experience was unique in the details but consistent in the result. My kids, like so many TPS graduates, are tenacious and confident learners. They push themselves, their classmates, and their teachers to get the most out of whatever it is they’re studying. In our time at TPS we’ve seen changes in leadership, growth in the student body and faculty, and the building of a whole new campus. What hasn’t changed is the fundamental mission of our school to prepare students for a future that is impossible to know but not impossible to shape. Our kids leave with a unique combination of confidence and compassion coupled with a fierce commitment to learning and high expectations for themselves and those around them.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2016–17 Jennifer Rice, President
We are fortunate in the 2017–2018 school year to be guided with the experienced hand of Carlye Nelson-Major, our interim Head of School. Carlye will lead us with her trademark wisdom and strength as we prepare to transition into new school leadership. And, as we have since our founding in 1972, The Philadelphia School will remain guided by our mission and a commitment to providing students with an education and experience like none other. So much of what makes that possible is the engagement of the TPS Community. Special thanks to all of you who have given so generously to support the mission of TPS. Your commitment is inspiring and a big part of what makes this community so special.

7 1 – 6 1 20 S T H G I L H G I H Equitable Classrooms Over the past few years, Diversity Director Brian Johnson has piloted the Equitable Classroom Program in classrooms at The Philadelphia School. The initiative uses survey data from participating students, as well as from their teachers/advisors and their parents, to help understand how the children are experiencing school and what strategies might best help them overcome identified academic or social-emotional barriers. The overall goal is to develop a responsive system of support for student achievement and a greater sense of social-emotional belonging. As capacity for self-advocacy is nurtured and personal goals have been met, the children transition out of the program.

Intensives Last year, a new feature was introduced in the TPS middle school. “Intensives” are electives that allow students to experience a subject that speaks to a particular interest or passion or to immerse themselves in a totally new topic. One Intensive, led by seventh grade teacher Jake Hunter and Director of Communications Lois West, was called “Let’s Go Lobbying”. Students learned how to advocate for their stances on issues of their choice. Issues included reproductive rights, transgender bathroom access in schools, sanctuary cities, pay equity, stronger background checks for gun purchases, and public school funding. Guest speakers in the class included Mayor Kenney, Congressman Evans, State Rep Sims, and professional lobbyists. Students put their learning into action, speaking to legislative staff in Senator Casey’s and Senator Toomey’s offices in Philadelphia and to Pennsylvania state representatives in Harrisburg.

y a l P e d a r G 3rd Third graders spent the year looking at issues of social justice in the context of US history. Their work culminates in the longstanding TPS tradition of the Third Grade Plays, written by the students with the support of their teachers and the guidance of staff from Philadelphia Young Playwrights.
n e t r a g r e d n i K Play Study Our kindergarten teachers introduced their project “How to put on a play!” Putting on a play requires a lot of cooperation, and learning how to function well together and collaborate are important kindergarten (and life) skills that require thoughtful negotiation and flexibility. Each week various guest “experts” visited their classrooms.

The TPS Chess Tigers competed in Nashville, Tennessee in the Supernationals, which combines the Elementary, Junior High and High School Nationals. Two TPS teams came in first place in the nation! We had 18 players in 4 sections — a record number of TPS participants! Enormous thanks to the TPS chess parents, whose support of their children and our chess program is greatly appreciated!

e m e h T l o o All-Sch The 2016–17 theme was Surviving and Thriving in the City Country Classroom. The theme was worked into curriculum throughout the year across the school. A middle school highlight was when eighth grade took the all-school theme to heart! They were all trained in hands-only CPR by the Youth Heart Watch program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Seventh graders worked on a cardboard and paper model project, selecting a biome in which to design a realistic shelter. This project was a joint, interdisciplinary endeavor by the seventh grade art and science teachers.
