LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, When we planned our 40th Anniversary Season, we wanted a season that would resonate with Philadelphians from every neighborhood. Looking back at the show-stopping talent of Leslie Odom, Jr, the heartfelt splendor of A Philly POPS Christmas, the virtuosity seen in JAZZED! and Uptown Nights, the fizzy fun of POPS Rocks the ‘80s, and the sophisticated whimsy of Cole Porter’s Broadway, I believe this season has done just that. Today, we complete this marvelous season with At The Hop! A Philadelphia Story at the Birth of Rock and Roll. We’ve planned a weekend of exciting events! Friday night’s pre-show entertainment will feature 10 of the original Bandstand dancers, alongside Philly music icon Jerry Blavat, “The Geator.” On Saturday, we will break the Guinness World Record for the number of people doing “the Twist” — which will take place at 11am in front of the Kimmel Center on Broad Street. Looking forward to the end of the month, our celebration of Memorial Day returns to the Mann Center in the annual Comcast NBCUniversal Memorial Salute. This event is free to the public, so bring your picnic basket and enjoy a performance dedicated to thanking those who have chosen a life of service. As always, we’ll be celebrating July 3 and 4 with our partners at Wawa Welcome America and The City of Philadelphia, so stay tuned for more details on those Salute Series shows. I’m pleased to say our 2019–2020 TOPS of the POPS season is setting records at the Box Office already! THE PHILLY POPS The Philly POPS, the largest standalone pops orchestra in the United States, delights audiences with the inspired performance of American popular music. The POPS celebrates this distinctive musical heritage through an expanding repertoire of innovative concert performances and a robust set of educational and engagement initiatives. Now in its 40th season, the official POPS orchestra of Pennsylvania serves a consistently growing audience of over 150,000 annually. Music Director Michael Krajewski and the 65-piece Philly POPS orchestra keeps listeners tapping their toes to an impressive repertoire of songs from American traditions of music up through today’s chart-toppers. The Philly POPS BIG Band, an 18-20 piece ensemble performing a rock and rhythm and blues repertoire, premiered in 2017 to enthusiastic response at the July 4 Welcome America Concert on the Parkway. Outside the concert hall, Salute Series performances — including POPS on Independence on July 3 and the I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders concert — celebrate the American tradition of service around important national holidays; POPS in Schools enhances music education for Philadelphia School District students; and POPS Outside brings POPS music to local communities. The Philly POPS performs as a founding resident company of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, and at venues throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

Farewell Music Director Michael Krajewski At The Hop is Michael Krajewski’s final show as Music Director of The Philly POPS. Under Michael’s leadership, the POPS has experienced unprecedented growth and success in ticket sales, subscriptions, programming quality, and engagement activities. The POPS would like to recognize his contributions not only in creating wonderful programming and performances, but also his kind spirit and trademark wit that make him a pleasure to be around. Michael will always be a part of the POPS Family and we look forward to seeing him back on our podium in the future. Here are some of the special moments from Michael’s time with the POPS.

World Record Attempt On Saturday May 4, the POPS and Jerry Blavat — “The Geator with the Heater” and “The Big Boss with the Hot Sauce” — have partnered on a pre-show block party on Broad Street in front of the Kimmel Center. Dancing in the Streets At the Hop aims to break the Guinness Book of World Records record for the most people dancing “The Twist” simultaneously — bringing up to 5,000 people onto Broad Street, and bringing the record back to Philly, where The Twist was invented! POPS IN SCHOOLS: JAZZ The Philly POPS launched its innovative POPS in Schools program in June 2015 with the AllCity Jazz Festival. This annual celebration of music features a full day of activities, including masterclasses led by POPS musicians and performances by the best student jazz musicians in the School District of Philadelphia. Each year, the festival culminates in a performance by the All-City Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Terell Stafford, the recently appointed Artistic Director for Jazz for The Philly POPS and the Director for Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies at Temple University. Stafford provides valuable insight for the next generation of jazz musicians each year by leading this stellar ensemble. On April 16, the POPS and its partners held the Fifth Annual All-City Jazz Festival. The festival included performances by the Temple University Jazz Band under the direction of Terell Stafford and the University of the Arts “Z” Big Band under the direction of Matt Gallagher, leader of The Philly POPS BIG Band. This program connected Philly’s best jazz students with the best jazz musicians in the city, many of whom are Temple University and University of the Arts professors. Today, POPS in Schools is an EITC-certified program that impacts 3,000 students in the School District of Philadelphia with supplemental music instruction at four elementary schools and 11 high schools. Jazz music and education continue to be a key component of the program. SUBSCRIBER SPOTLIGHT Elaine Brumberg
Elaine Brumberg likes to say her career took her “from beauty to bowling.” The Pittsburgh-area native worked in the cosmetics industry and was fired for telling someone that they shouldn’t be using the products. She then wrote a national best-selling book called “Save Your Money, Save Your Face,” two more books, and articles for magazines and newspapers. “The Washington Post dubbed me ‘the Ralph Nader of the cosmetics industry,’” Elaine remembers. She and her husband Norman (who passed away eight years ago) also owned five bowling centers. When Norman became ill, they sold four of them, but kept one (Thunderbird Lanes in Warminster) and Elaine went to bowling management school. “I love being in the bowling center because I love people,” she says. “I totally renovated the center, hired a food a beverage manager, changed the snack bar to a bar and bistro restaurant, am installing new furniture, and redid the lanes.” Every Saturday afternoon, Elaine hosts a group of special needs adults and children at Thunderbird Lanes. “A lot of bowling centers don’t want to take special needs children,” Elaine says. “But it’s the most joyous time of my life. I’m very proud of what I’m doing in the bowling business.” Soon, she will begin taking a portable bowling alley to local children’s cancer hospitals to entertain the kids. Elaine now lives in Mount Laurel with David, whom she calls her “significant other husband.” She has three children, seven grandchildren of her own, and two more with David. She’s been subscribing to the POPS for about a decade and sits in row K of the orchestra section on Sunday afternoon. “I like to be as close as I can,” she says. “The shows are absolutely incredible.” Favorite Show: “I loved Uptown Nights with Byron Stripling. “The Geator with the Heator” When Jerry Blavat was 13, he snuck into the Bandstand studio. He and friend Johnny Panvini had befriended Jo Mazzu, a regular on the show. Jerry wasn’t quite old enough to appear on the show, so while Johnny distracted the doorkeeper, Jerry slipped into another entrance. “I had no way of knowing that a world unlike anything I had ever seen was waiting for me a few feet away,” Jerry said in his book “You Only Rock Once.” “I had never seen a television studio in person, or cameras, or the kind of microphone that Bob Horn used on his podium, and that first day I took it all in hungrily.” Jerry impressed everyone with his dancing skills and started going to Bandstand every day. “All of my early experiences — dancing in my grandparents’ living room, doing the Mummers’ strut, practicing with Roberta as a child and Jo Mazzu as a teenager, attending dances every weekend — combined to give me a unique style, and by the time I started dancing on Bandstand, my steps were different than most kids’.” Since then, Jerry Blavat has had a storied career in the music industry. He was the road manager for Danny and the Juniors (whose big hit was “At the Hop”), hosted a syndicated radio show, produced and hosted a television show called The Discophonic Scene, has appeared in television and movies, and owns the nightclub Memories in Margate, New Jersey. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Music Alliance’s Hall of Fame in 1993 and is part of a permanent exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jerry is a Philadelphia music icon!
ARLENE SULLIVAN A Bandstand “Regular”
Arlene Sullivan never trained as a dancer. The Southwest Philly native picked it up from watching Bandstand with her mom after school in seventh grade. At a neighborhood party, a Bandstand regular, Justine Carrelli, offered to help Arlene and some girlfriends get onto the show. Arlene quickly became a regular and – with dance partner Kenny Rossi – a fan favorite. From 1956-1959, she danced on Bandstand from 2:30-5pm every weekday. “After school ended at 2:15, we’d hop on a bus or trolley car to get there,” Arlene remembers. “Our parents always knew where we were. We were always home for dinner and did homework after dinner. Bandstand was an afterschool activity for us.” Arlene remembers that every Philly neighborhood had its own dancing style. North Philly and South Philly had their own styles. So did Norristown and West Philly. “On the show, we met kids from different neighborhoods and learned how to dance their way.” “I’ll never understand why I got popular,” Arlene says. “I wasn’t the best dancer or the best looking, but for some reason, I got famous with Kenny. We got a lot of letters. We didn’t realize how famous we were until celebrities came to the show. Paul Anka, Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon… they told us that everywhere they go, they’re asked if they know us! Annette got letters about me saying we looked alike and we became pen pals for years. Those were innocent times.” “We got to meet everybody,” Arlene says. “Movie stars like Tab Hunter, all the teen idols, Bobby Rydell, Johnny Mathis, Dion, The Belmonts. Jerry Blavat was one of the kids I used to watch on Bandstand. When I met him, it was like meeting a star.” Arlene now lives in Ventnor, New Jersey and she still dances. “Dancing makes you smile,” she says. “It’s good for you.” In 2016, she released a book with Ray Smith and Sharon Sultan Cutler about the experience called “Bandstand Diaries.”

Thanks to its passionate supporters, The Philly POPS is generating significant growth in ticket sales and attendance, with particular growth in the POPS subscription base. These advances are the driving force behind innovative programming for new audiences, meaningful work that benefits local communities, and a new slate of in-school education programs. The Philly POPS is breaking out of the concert hall and bringing music to the streets of Philadelphia and its surrounding towns. Look for POPS artists performing in pop-up beer gardens, city parks, leisure venues, public schools, and alongside some of the greatest vocalists of our time.
Salute Series The Philly POPS Salute Series encourages recognition of service and commitment through an expanding set of events and activities — each transformative moments of celebration for our community. Salute performances recognize the service and sacrifice of those dedicated to a collective identity of American values and tradition.
POPS in Schools Launched in 2015, POPS in Schools is an EITC-certified program that supplements music education for 3,000 students in the School District of Philadelphia by embedding POPS Musicians and Teaching Artists in schools to cultivate the music leaders of tomorrow with mentorship from the music leaders of today. POPS in Schools provides programming for high school students through the All-City Jazz Festival, held each April during Jazz Appreciation Month and with weekly in-school activities at four elementary schools and one high school.
